Nice setup! You just earned a new subscriber.
@larrylezon1590 I appreciate it Larry! Nice to meet ya!
I would throw a BNC adapter on that. They don't wear out as quick when installing and removing the antenna. Would also be a food idea to switch all your antennas to BNC.
@WRJK988 Was it you that told me that 4 or 5 months ago? I have a few because of a reply from a viewer. These antennas are all older so I have to use adapters to run BNC.
@FirstUnitedTactical I don't think it was me, but I'm a firm believer in BNC connections for frequently removed antennas. I have bought a lot of the SMA to BNC adapters for all of my VHF/UHF antennas and radios, HT and Mobiles.
Great idea on making a mobile radio with more power. I am looking forward to your field tests to see how does compared to an HT.
Is there a way to adjust the power so it wouldn't drain the battery so fast? I may not need to reach out 30 miles most of the time. Most of my friends and family live within 10 miles so I don't think I need that much power.
@johnndavis7647 This set up isn't for a permanent radio. This is more for emergency use if your handheld dies while hiking or whatever. You always want to use a handheld, mobile or base radio when you are talking on a "normal" level to friends and family. Theres no way to recharge this battery without household 110 power, so that makes it emergency use only. But yes, you can control Low, Medium, High power settings on the radio.
Yes but how far your shorts are not giving enough info
@observationpostcharlie1365 I know it. Theres a program I use to cut them down, and I had them set for less than 30 seconds. The new ones are up to 1 min. I only do 2 a locations, 5 mile and 8 mile. 8 mile has the cows, 5 is just a field.
Great review. I just bought the DB20g and HYS base antenna; should be delivered Wednesday. Seen good reviews on the radio and will be main base radio for time. Will be needing a good mobile antenna and glad you broke it down.
YEP! You will have a good setup!
I have one and this would be perfect to put on my backpack with a hand mic on the strap when I’m out walking. A true 5 watt GMRS handheld with a battery that can support that output is amazing.
Ailunce HA1G
You need to try Midland MXTA13 it's on Midlands website for $20 it works real good for me, it came with my Midland mxt115 Radio. After all my gmrs antennas I went through I finally gave this one a try it blows them all out of the water.
Good news, I have a few of those Tidradio extended antennae, yes they are good. Based on your review of the Abbree 771 GMRS orange antenna I purchased the 15" GMRS, it too is an amazing antenna. Switching between both antennae the feedback was consistent, saying on their end the Abbree sounded better and less scratchy. Until after the tests they did not know which antenna I was using, each report was more in favor of the Abbree. Then when I informed them the antennae, I was using they were pleasantly surprised, saying they must purchase one for themselves. Thank you for running those tests.
@ricdonato4328 Yes, the Abbree antennas are tuned specifically for GMRS where most of the Tidradio 771's that shipped with radios are HAM. These are new GMRS tuned antennas. I haven't had a chance to field test against other antennas due to weather, but I will get a good video on that soon!
You got to check out my set up using the DB25-D.

Man, where were you a few years ago. I've invested in two Hardened Power ammo boxes for my midland radios. the MXT40 and 115. A little more technical but your kit appears to get the job done at a much lesser price. Not knocking hardened power but still...

@robert4027 I just put it together. I tried to do a field test this morning but too much rain and 99% humidity made transmission horrible. It will be better than a handheld, but this should only be used in emergency because it takes 110 to charge the battery. Solar won't do it.

I bought a 5 pack for just under 20 bucks delivered.
After watching your review of the Abbree 771G, I purchased it. As of 2024-12-10 it cost me $7.99. Truly, I did not expect any better nor worse than the included Tidradio H3 15" 771 extended range antenna. The reports I received were outstanding, considerably better than H3's 15" extended range antenna. First, I hit the repeaters twenty-five plus miles away. Second, responders said I was coming in very well with just a bit of static but nothing to complain about. For the record I was in my home office not outside. Three, I went out on the back porch, Pine trees all over the backyard, and we are in the lowest section of the subdivision on a pond, they said I came in better, however the first call was very good as well. The Tidradio H3 extended range antenna from within my home office most often did not do well thus I needed to go outside on the upper back porch, or outside to the driveway. This Abbree orange 15.5" antenna is outstanding, much better than any of my other GMRS antennas which includes the Nagoya 771G. Keep up the good work, thank you.
Discount code does in fact work. I'm ordering a bunch right now.
@@MissingLinkMTB So it still gave you 10% off that sale price?

Awesome looking radio. Looks like it has a strong build like the Tidradio H8. I was wondering if you had any info on firmware mods for the H8 ? I've had it for a while and it works great.

I think i would consider maybe adding a jumper coax to give the radio a good ear (like a mag mount) for my truck. 🤷
I actually thought about doing that. I was thinking of adding a normal 12' - 16' coax for mobile with mag mount then cutting down a pizza pan to fit in the bag. The only problem is the antenna would be very low to the ground and it needs to be up high. In the test, I'm just going to hold the bag up over my head...
How long will it last running on that battery?
@olacop No one knows. This bag would only be used as an emergency, so hopefully not used too much. I will be talking about how important it us to carry a solar charger to keep your handheld going at the same time. I wish there was an indicator, but there isn't. I will be testing it this weekend with field tests, then I will monitor the time it takes to recharge. It took 2 hours to charge from totally dead. That's the baseline for the charging time.
bro that Q10G is super clear. the TD-h3 puts up a good show, but the Q10 shows why a Super hetrodyne is king
@SignalJones Yep, and I just got my hands on the newest one with a brighter screen. I'm running field tests tomorrow!!!! Other than the Wouxuns I have, the H3 is still favorite!
@FirstUnitedTactical I've got a couple of H3's, and some Midlands slightly better than bubble packs.
@SignalJones Oh yeah Midland will be a much better quality than budget radios. It, it's crazy how many features the H3's come with. Have you kept up with the firmware updates?
@@FirstUnitedTactical I just got them, so no. 😂
@SignalJones Alright, they are probably updated already. Check the Tidradio.com site and click on H3, then find the software tab. It will tell u the latest version.
Was looking at the 771g antenna to use w this setup. It's rated for 10W vs. the 20W transmitter. Does it really matter. Newbie question
@@joeyt684 We will be finding out this weekend. The Diamind SRJ77CA is a 20w antenna, which may be more suitable.
Excellent. I can get everything easily here in Canada except the radio because of our less than 3rd world restrictions. I can get an Anytone 778UV for a semi reasonable price, hoping that would work.
@reloadnorth7722 That Anytone is too wide. Im looking at mine now that I use as a base station radio. You would need to get 1 size larger bag to hold it. Look in the description of this video and click the link for the HAM video I got the idea from. He uses a Yaesu I believe.

@@imtall31 I'm not sure if safe is the correct wording, but I'm going to take it for a field test this weekend (like all my other tests). I'm more worried about 20w that close to my head! There will be a lot of footage with it sitting on my hood and me standing at the length of the mic cord!
Man that's a heck of an antenna. Whats the best antenna you tested so far. Nagoya maybe?

You know what???? I bought a small 10w folding solar panel that unfolds and can clip onto the bag, and charge as you are walking. One like that. I forgot to put it in the video!!!!! I'm having a hard time finding a USB plug that will fit the battery itself though.... I hope to test it with other antennas this weekend. Look for it next week, fingers crossed!
@@FirstUnitedTactical It would be really cool if somebody made a cordless tool/drill battery adapter to power things. I do have a USB direct charging adapter for those batteries along with many other things like fans, blowers, lights, and tools. Sliding a 4 or 6+ AH drill battery into that pack would be awesome and versatile in times of need. Let alone the redundancy since most of us have several of those batteries already. You have 12v out of that battery in your video, so why not use a female 12v socket adapter and have at it. Lots of stuff can be placed into that that are off the shelf and 5v USB output. Heck, I still plug a radar detector into one of those in my car. LOL (they still work :-))
@ossqss Could it be as simple as getting a universal power cord for your computer, or radar detector? I thought lithium batteries needed a special kinda juice.... I guess juice is juice tho!

@joshscarborough697 Thanks! The db20g is an awesome radio! Im hoping to run field tests tgis weekend. Im thinking a Nagoya 771g may do just as good as tge 42.5 tactical. Look for that video next week. The link for this bag is at the top of the comments and my full store link is in the description.
How's the battery life with this setup?
@MrHugo61 I haven't had a chance to test that. It will be hard also because there's no battery meter to tell me if it's 50% or 25% level. Without being lithium, it will continue to push 100% power until it crashes and dies at the last second. There's not an easy way to tell.
Awesome now we can cook our brain lol!! Can’t wait for the testing
@@DaytonaJim78 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@joeyt684 Nah, just hold it over your head! The higher the antenna the better the signal anyway, right!!!
Well darn...I think my wife may have bought me this radio for Christmas so I HAD to watch. 🤣 So I do have a question for you. If I cut the cigarette plug off to convert the radio to use on the go and still wanted the option to use in my truck, I'd need to purchase an Anderson to Car Cigarette Lighter adapter, yes?
@theprepperdad Well, that kit of Poles has more than enough. That's what I did. I just keep the cord with cigarette lighter ready to plug straight into radio.
@@FirstUnitedTactical oh duh! lol 🤪
keep the cigarette plug you cut off from the radio and solder the same type of connectors you use for your mobile battery pack
Im curious on how long the battery would last with continuous monitoring and occasional qso’s ?
@@Redneckerthanu I answered a similar question in the comments, and there's no clear answer. I would use the setup as more of an emergency communication radio. A little budget radio with a 1500mah battery will run standby all day, so this should last 2-3 days just monitoring. 20w transmission will suck the battery dry pretty quick tho.
It's fun to overhear the conversation live on the radio then see it in your videos. Been working on a similar design for backpacking. I was going to use a fused PowerPole distribution block to get a few accessories like USB plug on the same battery but I like the simplicity of straight from battery to radio like you did. Question: should there be a fuse on the hot side of that lead between the battery and the radio? The only other items I am thinking about is a battery and current monitor and a roll-up J-pole (N9TAX). Good stuff David.
@paulbrown9574 Oh dang! Yes, there should be a fuse cause it's 12v. I didn't even think of that! But honestly, nothing is there to shear it or splice the wiring so it should be fine without a fuse.
Excellent

the best testing video so far!
I appreciate it Artur! This is actually an older one, so there are better ones since then. I've tried to combine the most popular radios with all the different common antennas throughout the months. Thanks though, and watch some others. If you want to see me comparing radios or antennas, just let me know and I will if I can!
My h8 is getting 7 and my buddy is getting 9 but I might get this for the job site!
I have numerous H8's and they don't necessarily push that much on the designated channel. One of mine says 11 watts, but it doesn't transmit as good as a solid 4.5w radio. That tells me that the radio might be pushing that much power, but it's spread on both sides of the designated frequency, left and right. It's called "drift" and that's what others mean when they talk about "spurious emissions". At the end of the day, the H8's are just a normal 4-5w radio, but I still love them! In fact, I did a video on this subject with a 5w GMRS and a 10w HAM: ua-cam.com/video/uasQPndSeyw/v-deo.html
@ I will check it out thanks!
