One cool thing I found while perusing the voice files is how they handle numbers. By combining clips together, you only need 30 or so voice clips to say any number possible. 1-19 are unique, but past that it's just multiples of 10 up to 100. For example, 125 is "one" + "hundred" + "twenty" + "five"
Mannn, Even 18 years later I'm just impressed with how well the voice lines were done. As prior service Army I kinda get a sense the chatter sounds both military AND police SWAT which is PERFECT.
Yeah i just come back here after watching some cop training roleplay and i was like "wtf they sound exactly like combine soldiers". The developers put a lot of effort in Half Life 2
And I like that while alot of their humanity has been lost, they still retain some form of emotion that wasn't scrubbed out. Notice how when you're on low health they cut the professionalism and jargon and straight up just say "Affirmative, we got him now." Or "That's it, wrap it up."
I've always loved the sound of their vocoder, it's so well made. It's so amazing and interesting to see how they interact with each other and the names they use to identify an enemy or weapon and how they ask for support when the enemy is not an easy target.
While everyone here is amazed by the radio, garrymos hl2rp (half-life 2 roleplayers) have been using these for years and actually communicated with one another using these lines. pretty fun
I can understand why Valve took out the pain sounds but I think they should have at least left the minimum damage lines in. The "Target ineffective" line is probably my favourite, nothing like your enemy saying "I barely felt that".
I have (again) forgotten to include a line, this one being "Overwatch reports possible hostiles inbound". Might not bother some, but if you're like me, it bugs greatly.

For so many of these lines, especially the last man standing ones, I keep expecting the sound of a shotgun blast and their final scream since I usually flank and kill them before they can complete their line.
They're a lot more complex than you think, they have cut lines of code that make them much more deadly. Even increasing their health actually makes them use their abilities more.
@@elektra81516 There's also a failure to use certain markers in levels that would let them use their more advanced tricks. Really, this is part of why FEAR's AI was remembered as being so amazing. They employed a HL1 trick (having the soldiers have a lot of situation-responsive lines) with greater fluency while also making sure the AI guys and level guys were working close together so that the AI could make the best use of the space it was in. There are parts of HL2 where they obviously did this (for example, when you raid the Civil Protection hardpoint early in the street battles), and parts where they didn't.
that's a damn good point. I guess you could explain around it that Gordon's suit picks up the signal but can't quite adjust the frequency so it ends up distorted? lol nevertheless I like it this way, sounds intimidating as it was intended instead of John giving a shoutout to Tim over Overwatch radio in ABSOLUTE CRYSTAL CLEAR voice "so heeeyy, how's your day, buddy?".

It honestly amazes me how much detail Valve put into even the smallest parts of this game. They could have easily just had the soldiers spouting incoherent generic military terms or, even more lazily, have just made the soldiers make a bunch of static computer sounds and it really would not have been noticed by anyone playing as combat goes fast enough that you have no time to intake and understand what the soldiers are saying. But no Valve had to take the time creating their own sub-language for the soldier dialog that featured completely fictional code words, phrases, and names that all were coherently spoken in nature and relayed to exactly what the soldiers were doing or what the player was doing. It makes me wonder if they finished the game in like 2002 and just spent the rest of the development time doing random shit like this. I mean it did pay off.
I'm surprised it took me so long to realize the combine soliders have a similar line combining system to the HECU soldiers for integrating various codes and unit names into the lines. It was done so well I never suspected it, that's so cool
This is great design. The Combine soliders still use interesting code names for units, showing they still have some shreds of humanity left. But the dispassionate delivery and audio distortion really sells the fact that they have been turned into pawns of the Combine higher ups.
I appreciate the effort you put into this, really explaining the code words and making it sound authentic by including complementary "affirmative" voice lines and all that. I've never really listened to the Combine chatter before (partly because you can't really distinguish what they're saying over the heavily distorted transmissions lol), there's a lot of interesting things going on.

In Half Life : Alyx, the soldiers will request “Weapon Amplification” in combat. So that’s a pretty neat detail
I like how they tried to recreate the HECU Grunt radio chatter in Half-Life 2.
Personally, it sounds 10x better AND cooler.
It fits the combine better than the HECU grunts, since the combine overwatch soldiers actually have voice modulators surgically implanted into them. Therefore, the structure in the code of how dialogue sentences are formed perfectly complements them. It feels more authentic than the HECU grunts.
@@HexdaHeresiarch agreed, hecu kinda out of placed with their radio filter, even if they are not using one, yes i know its old

Dont get me wrong the Combine soldiers do sound cool but the HECU radio chatter is just too iconic even if it isn’t realistic
@@CallMeAsna The HECU radio chatter is that way because proper voicelines didn't fit on the CD so they stitched the callouts together like a TTS program does.

As of an update in September 2019, Combine soldiers use their pain and injury call out sounds again.
Does this have something to do with the AI take cover when getting shot ?
@@mredgeworth4428 yeah like when metrocops are injured. The first injury (if it doesn't nearly kill them) they'll report they're still going, then when near death they'll call out and try to take cover.
@@RescoeZ that's for civil protection officers but sadly for the overwatch soldiers they rarely take cover when getting shot they only do that when reloading they aren't like heuc from HL1 after all
@@RescoeZ can you pls tell me if there are any maps that make the Combine AI shine because most of the level design doesn't support the AI causing them to rush and charge not flank and take cover
@@mredgeworth4428 probably the Coast levels, they tend to have more room to move around.

Good job, nice to see my childhood game content.

I JUST saw your Combine chatter video for the first time yesterday :D
While everyone here is amazed by the radio, garrymos hl2rp (half-life 2 roleplayers) have been using these for years and actually communicated with one another using these lines. pretty fun
Awesome dude. Now I can finally see the text.
Nice touch adding in some hurt lines as well. Makes the combine seem more militaristic and not zombies
I can understand why Valve took out the pain sounds but I think they should have at least left the minimum damage lines in. The "Target ineffective" line is probably my favourite, nothing like your enemy saying "I barely felt that".

Well, sadly, there aren't many people still interested in Half Life. Not because it's a bad game, no. Heard some familiar dialogue in Half Life: Alyx so I came back here.
Some of the terminology helped me in some hectic firefights!
you can really see why the combine took over, they are tactical and smart, and even when they are about to die they keep it to the books, they are shown to even talk like soldiers, like “that’s it wrap it up” and “we got him now”
You probably know this by now, but just in case, these soldiers didn't took over the Earth. They were created after the Combine conquered the planet.
@@capitanpastabase6342yeah, main combatants were synths created by the combine like synth infantry and whatnot, i think soldiers were drafted at about after the 7hr war to manage installations and outposts across the grid as a security measure against any rebellion and aliens, and cops for high citizen concentration areas, that about right?
@@polishbot The Metrocops were to help oppress the civilians, the Transhuman Arms was Breen's attempt to impress the Universal Union and prove that Humanity could be useful and worth maintaining.
For so many of these lines, especially the last man standing ones, I keep expecting the sound of a shotgun blast and their final scream since I usually flank and kill them before they can complete their line.
Combine Overwatch always seemed so bland to me before I found these videos.
There are parts of HL2 where they obviously did this (for example, when you raid the Civil Protection hardpoint early in the street battles), and parts where they didn't.

it's funny how hl2 is kind of sci-fi, yet radios are inaudible
Well they're not meant for Gordon so I doubt thay it would be clear for him
that's a damn good point.
I guess you could explain around it that Gordon's suit picks up the signal but can't quite adjust the frequency so it ends up distorted? lol nevertheless I like it this way, sounds intimidating as it was intended instead of John giving a shoutout to Tim over Overwatch radio in ABSOLUTE CRYSTAL CLEAR voice "so heeeyy, how's your day, buddy?".

yea same. The algorithm is too good.
I like how they have different lines for plain resistance, higher value targets like Barney or Alyx, and finally their main priority freeman
Damn, surprisingly deep and realistic voice lines. Especially when they get stressed, they are using their call sign very calmly ... And then start to scream haha (Like at 5:00) I don't know if this is intentional though, could be a combination of takes.
HL 1 and 2 record indiviual words as lines sometimes to allow for variation
Do those combinations appear in the game?

I really hope Citadel actually releases because this video has made me obsessed with the idea of a game that let's you command and control combine forces while hearing their unique banter and comms.

6:24 I love how arrogant the Combine sound with these lines
Heh, though that chatter was distorted to be uninteligible on purpose, during the game action I can't make heads or toes of what the heck they are saying, much like the Announcer. Great vid, mate, a little more to show how great HL2 is.
There are many things that have made me fascinated in Half-Life 2. This just shows that how well Valve did their job in creating content for their games, just like how do they make all things interactable in Half Life: Alyx.

5:18 does nobody see the zombie on the cliff behind?
I mean it did pay off.
no, in fact the game was supposed to release in 2003, and they heavily rushed it for a late 2004 release

To the point of them no longer human
I'm surprised it took me so long to realize the combine soliders have a similar line combining system to the HECU soldiers for integrating various codes and unit names into the lines. It was done so well I never suspected it, that's so cool
Haha, I just saw your original video and noticed this one in the description, it was barely uploaded a day ago, thank you for your work though!
This is great design. The Combine soliders still use interesting code names for units, showing they still have some shreds of humanity left. But the dispassionate delivery and audio distortion really sells the fact that they have been turned into pawns of the Combine higher ups.
