But it does not turn smoothly, there is a certain roughness to it -- like it needs lubrication. Should the overrunning clutch internal body then be lubricated?

That could be caused by faulty solenoid hold in coil! Have you checked if both hold-in and pull-in coils in the solenoid switch are working fine? The hold-in and pull-in coils work together to make the starter pinion slide towards the flywheel ring gear. Once the pinion reaches there, it is the duty of the hold-in coil to keep it there until the ignition key is released.

Abj, mine slides but drops back before turning the engine. What could be problem?
