I think I remember reading that foods like this (Not sure if fugu would be included or not) come about because of times of extreme food scarcity. If you've got nothing else to eat and the alternative is dying of starvation... well, it's worth the try because you're going to die either way most likely. Eventually, because humans are smart and can reason through A causes B, they figure out how to not die in the process. Some foods... just took longer than others. But yeah, if we've found out how to eat weird things, it's sometimes because there's no other option in the environment. Anyway, sorry for replying to a month old comment but I thought it was neat.
Fugu fact- There is a species in the Atlantic which is toxin-free which is fished near the Carolinas Fugu fact- Dolphins will aggravate them to puff them up to expose themselves to the toxin. They get high. They take turns and puffer-puffer-pass the fish around until each has had a turn. This behavior has been caught on film.
I don’t think tetrodotoxin is a type of substance that make people “high”, it works on the nervous system and paralyze the body. While dolphins are different from humans, I think it works the same.

Mikey Chen didn’t care for it boiled or fried at all (and he likes almost everything) - maybe the prep made the difference? And Abroad In Japan said he liked the sashimi, but that it was essentially flavorless. Where AiJ ate, also wondered if they were farming the fish (it looked so big & in a bucket like this one), but was not sure - thank you for clarifying. Perhaps as they bred to be poison-free (DID NOT KNO THAT), they’re also improving on the flavor with feed or rearing or genetics? Maybe you guys could go to a fish farm one day? Thanks for all your videos though wether you manage to get around to that or not.
We were lucky enough to go to a very famous restaurant, not necessarily expensive, but a very deep local find that many famous people drive out to eat at...but that find is due to our friend Yohei, who is also a foodie like us. People who aren’t truly into food think that one product will taste the same everywhere. That’s just not true...why else are sushi chefs fighting for the best produce in the morning? Beef in Japan has crazy high standards. The type of fish, where it is caught, how it is raised...it all matters. You have to try it many different ways at low and high end places. And remember the flavours 📝 We know Mikey, and he does indeed like to eat, but going to places that offer all you can eat or huge serving sizes, aren’t giving you the high-quality anything. When we filmed with him for soba noodles I thought the noodles were not great...too soft, very flour based rather than the nutty 2:8 ratio I love, so I didn’t want to keep eating them for the sake of winning. Fugu can be found sold all over Yamaguchi, but it’s not like the quality is the same everywhere. As for Chris, I didn’t watch his video so I don’t know how or where he ate it. I know Chris likes to eat and drink, but eating and being “really into food” and different things. 🤔 We spend a lot of our time cooking, grocery shopping for new ingredients, learning to make Japanese food to understand the flavour profiles, and hunting down good food locations so that we can train our tongue and develop real understandings of how things taste. Our only other crazy food friend in Jun (from Rachel and Jun) and we talk about miso or seaweed and gush over knives and ingredients together hahahaha....Food Otakus.... 😂

You are always expanding my horizons. I have seen people trying fugu dozens of times always as the classic flower shaped sashimi dish, but I have never seen any of the dishes you had in the video.

As for Chris, I didn’t watch his video so I don’t know how or where he ate it. I know Chris likes to eat and drink, but eating and being “really into food” and different things. 🤔
We spend a lot of our time cooking, grocery shopping for new ingredients, learning to make Japanese food to understand the flavour profiles, and hunting down good food locations so that we can train our tongue and develop real understandings of how things taste. Our only other crazy food friend in Jun (from Rachel and Jun) and we talk about miso or seaweed and gush over knives and ingredients together hahahaha....Food Otakus.... 😂

You are always expanding my horizons. I have seen people trying fugu dozens of times always as the classic flower shaped sashimi dish, but I have never seen any of the dishes you had in the video.
