He just left our barn and property. Denver and Eddy are two of the most docile horses I've been near in my 50 years. Jake Harvath is doing this to raise awareness for the mustangs that need adopted. He is an amazing young man! He is also a farrier and these guys are in great care! His next leg is only 16 miles and he responsibly mapped his trip and continues to reroute and adjust as needed for their health and safety! He's already cut off 1000 miles. Y'all need to watch and see because this young man is an inspiration to everyone! ❤

This seems like such a fun thing to do... the adventure, leaving modern society, proving to yourself that you can do it... are some reasons why people would choose to do something like this.
But taking animals, once you think about the amount of preparation, risk, cost, etc... it doesn't sound like so much fun anymore.

They done this type of things in the past in the wild west. Cattle drives are a good example of it. Since a farrier is mostly work on ranches? Ranchers do cattle drives which gives this guy a plus since he would know how to train horses to travel like this.

This kind of journey appeals to me because of the pace.
I've done several hiking and biking holidays.
I love having the time to take in the landscape I'm traversing. To spot the little things I would have missed if I zoomed past in a car.
When I had my German shepherd she would come along with a pack. The hikes, mind you.
My stepmother has done some pilgrimage walks, like the French route to Santiago de Compostela.
But the pre training for the long trips is everything.
Masi and I would do several day hikes carrying water bottles before we set off for a full week.
Cyril gave poor Pete a month, despite promises to train him for a year.

I totally see the allure of a trip like this. I’ve done many thru hikes and such, I’m a die hard outdoors person but damn it’s even complicated if I want to take my dogs on trail or cross country. Many times I end up leaving them at home because safety, conditioning and outdoor conditions. My dogs are tough but sometimes I don’t want to put them through my crazy ideas 😅 same goes for my mule, can’t imagine how complicated doing this with horses would be.

@@erinjean2695 Picture yourself in the old west and the only means is by train horseback, wagon trains or stagecoach. 3 of the four go by horses, mules and donkeys. They do give the animals breaks back then until they hit a drought area, and it would be a tough travel.

And he’s a professional farrier. He trained these 3 Mustangs himself. He prepped them for the trip. He has good fitting gear and he has even consulted professionals to get custom packs during the trip, got rid of a lot of gear etc. He seems to really consider the horse’s welfare. He IMMEDIATELY got vet care when one horse had a minor eye issue. He rests them 1-2 days a week. He feeds and waters them. He isn’t cheating by trailering like 2 Raw2 Ride.

His "bella" also lost entirely too much weight.
But besides that, he also isnt really doing this trip like he puts on. He could handle it until the Utah border, then ever since everyone has been doing all the heavy lifying for his "capable mustangs". Literally 95% of the time.

The comment about hobbling was taken out of context for this review. Jake pickets his horses every night and uses the hobbles only at certain times such as when he's packing up the horses in the morning or unpacking them in the evening. Those activities are safer if the horses are somewhat restrained. Tying to a tree also works but only if there are trees around. Relying on recall and essentially leaving a horse to it's own devices, especially all night while you're asleep, is very dangerous. Jake is traveling and camping in unfamiliar mountain terrain, or often close to highways, railroads or small towns. Having horses roaming around free in these situatuions would be dangerous for them, for him and for other people. Even the best trained horse is still an animal with it's own unique personality, fears and ideas about things. There is no way to always know exactly what they're thinking or what they will do in any given situation. Good horsemanship is a partnership between you and your horse, not a dictatorship where you can expect the horse will always do exactly what you want, when you want it to, every time. In that way they're just like people so good luck with that! Teaching your viewers that picketing. highlining or hobling when in the back country is somehow bad horsemanship and that every horse can be trusted to recall every time, is dangerous and only shows your lack of horsemanship and experience in this area.

He seems like a reasonably experienced horseman, and a farrier to boot. Sometimes, although you mean well Raleigh, you can be very off the mark. These are Mustangs, not your average horse 🐴. Hobbling, I think is just practical, he can't carry electric fencing with him, too much weight. And because there are 3x of them, it's likely natural instincts would kick in over any recall training! Lol 😅. And the Bells thing is supposed to warn Predators, lots of riders use them in Countries where there are Bears etc, as to not surprise them. Pros and Cons to it all, but I reckon he knows what he's doing more than most. As for the longevity of it, I guess that's why some people want to climb Everest, but most of us don't. Personal aspirations I think. 😊💙🐴💜

It’s night and day between this guy and that other bonehead. His horses seem in good condition, baby they were born for this. And you’re right, he doesn’t trust them, not yet. But he said he’s growing closer to them, the most he’s ever worked with them. So I see their trust only growing. In the meantime, these animals are tamed wild horses so fight or flight is their survival, it will be much stronger than our overly domesticated horses that wouldn’t know a bear if it smacked them upside the head, lol. So I suspect their recall may be tougher to train. But he says he managed to catch Bella, seems like she’s picked it up which will help immensely.
This guy can pull this off I think. Glad he got a break.

I had a 2yr old get her tail wrapped around a tree from scratching it somehow and she stood there for 4 hours before we finally found her. The first two weeks are going to suck the most when you do long distance anything, especially when you have equines with you. You can prepare yourself and your equine for every situation you can think of, but those two weeks will bring up situations you could of never guessed would be a thing. Any accidents will more than likely be within that first week.
As for bells, I had a bell on my donkey. In places where shepherds may be plenty predators may associate bells with prey, but in the USA bells are typically associated with dogs. When you go backpacking or thru hiking in a more remote place most people have bells on their dogs to alert people or animals of their presence. A horse is a thousand lb animal. Most lone predators wouldn't try to go up against one especially factoring in the human nearby. The bell certainly is not a dinner bell. Accidents happen, animals sometimes wander, and at night you can actually learn through the bell chimes and patterns what exactly your equine is doing
As for scoping out the route, when you make a route that long you can't physically scope it out. It's impossible. My route was only 300 miles, but within the first week I had to make two detours because of conditions not shown on maps. The best way to know trail conditions is asking someone coming from the way you are heading, but you don't always run into people. In those remote areas you need to stay flexible and always pack more food than you need in case your new route is longer. We carried 30 days of food even though our shop stops were planned for every 15 days

Hobbles are a good tool and recall doesn’t work for most horses especially mustangs they are a flight animal Hobbles also teach horses to stand if they are caught in a fence rope or anything else. You should do a video on showing us how you recall your horse in an open setting . Bells help you locate your horse when it’s pitch black and you only have a flashlight as well as alert predators so they are not surprised by the horse and usually flee before they see them. You should spend some time on a ranch and see how horses are really worked and I don’t mean abused I’m against any abuse but I feel like you could pick up more knowledge actually working with horses daily and be able to see their full potential in a different setting besides an arena or a 5 mile trail ride.

I find your perception of training horses for recall fascinating. In an enclosed field, sure - but when they're in the wilds where they could run as far as they wanted if something spooked them... how do you intend to recall a horse that can't hear you? They are prey animals. They will inevitably run. I am just kind of curious about this perception of yours. I would not trust my horse at all to not be tied in this scenario (but then again, I would also just not do this with my horse as I don't think she's made for it) - or really any horse.

  • @JustASleepySloth

I'm not sure if it's mentioned in the video but responsible horse owners who do endurance often use hoof boots which will wear down instead of the horses hooves. It would be a detriment to these horses health to ride with shoes for long distances, even short they are so incredibly harmful they literally have no positive effects on the hoof. Barefoot would also likely cause them to go lame unless the distances were kept very short or their hooves were managed extremely well.
I have some concerns about the mustangs, whilst naturally hardier it matters how long ago they were living wild; if they basically were only born there and then grew up in captivity without the same level of freedom or exercise they wouldn't be ready for this journey. The same can be said for adult horses if they have not done that kind of exercise for several months or years. Whilst the horses breed means they CAN do it doesn't mean they can do it immediately, conditioning will be needed and they'll need to either be eating most of the time that they're travelling or need a diet that's balanced enough to give them the energy whilst not sacrificing their stomachs or health (aka causing ulcers from a lack of consistent grazing leading to a build up of stomach acid).
I'm glad she brought up her concerns about the lack of safety hobbles provide when faced with predators cause that was my first concern.
Negatives I've noticed so far: 1. No prior training for recall, emergency sitions 2. No prior training to prepare the horses for a long journey of this kind 3. Doesn't appear to have actually scouted the area in advance to get a very clear idea of his route since he didn't know the canyons were a no go and lastly 4. A lack of sunscreen or skin protection, which leads me to believe he may not have all the equipment he actually needs for this journey. It seems like he didn't think everything through because anyone who actually did wouldn't fucking do this.

Not all accurate statements. He had the one Mustang 9 years and the others for some good amount of time. He did have them legged up before the trip and he started more gradually to build up their endurance. They are not senior horses like 20 year old Pete from 2Raw2Ride. This guy stops for 2 days to rest, and he appropriately feeds and waters the horses in addition to rotating riding and packing among the 3 horses. He immediately got a vet when one horse had an eye issue. I don’t think they are lame or colicky like 2raw2ride. He is doing this for a good cause (promoting Mustang rescue) vs $ like 2Raw2Ride who was trying to sell his poor horses for 60k

you are absolutely right about teaching the horses good recall. Which does take longer with mustangs. When i was a young girl we would teach our mustangs to stay close by teathering one leg to a stake in the ground while we were at home after a few days of this training we would put a short rope around their leg but not attached to the ground. Eventually when we used the mustangs out on packing adventures we would only need a shoelace around one foot and the horse would always stay reasonably close to camp, but if they needed to run they could. Mustangs remember their freedom so out in wilder areas we didnt really trust them to recall the shoelace just kind of gave us and the horses a little security i guess. I agree hobbles should never be used out in the wild. I live in Alberta, Canada . Here bears are the biggest threat so hobbles would ensure a death of a horse. Blessings to you ❤ I love your videos

I'm sure I'm incurring the wrath of the hordes for this comment, but I find videos like yours frustrating. I've not seen much of your videos, but from what I have seen, it seems like you rally the support of very emotional and irrational equestrians that base opinions from their own feelings and not science-based findings regarding horses and their behaviors. Your argument against distance riding being 'you don't understand the appeal' (10:57 & 9:11) is unsubstantial and opinionated. You clearly did research previous to the video, and the message I'm seeing is 'horses are absolutey capable of this journey but I don't like that other people use their horses differently than me.' You state that camping is miserable around the 11:10 mark. Some people enjoy camping more than you, and Mr. Harvath seems to be one of them. Your points on hobbles are quite opinionated as well, based entirely on your own, seemingly limited, experience. Its a different method than recall, but arguably safer and more reliable than recall. It's shortsighted to say recall works perfectly, and all the points you use against hobbling/picketing could be used against recall as well. Honestly, the best solution seems to use both methods. And your 'no hate' conclusion comes off insincere and sarcastic, after repeatedly minimizing his efforts and work. I'm not saying Mr. Harvath has not or will not make mistakes, nor am I saying all your points are invalid. Its likely that this comment will have no effect on your production nor your attacking videos on others, but to the individuals watching who may read this, do your own research and don't let other people have opinions for you.

I grew up in Miami, and by Miami standards, I was pretty outdoorsy. I wanted to dogsled race and long distance ride with horses. Two things happened...I moved to Wisconsin and felt a real winter for the first time....long distance dogsledding went out the window lol, and I went backcountry backpacking for 5 days and did some shorter trips for studying wolves and eagles, fun but I discovered I wasn't actually that much of an outdoorsy person as I'd originally thought. All that long distance sleep in the wilderness for weeks on end...that itch was scratched in college. A day hike or two days camping near a lake with access to a bathroom is about as much as I want to do these days.

As you get older your tolerance for discomfort and cold goes out the window. When I was younger, I may have been able to deal with something like this if I had the opportunity to give it a try. I'm 62 and on my last tent camping trip (long weekend with access to a shower and an air mattress in the tent), it rained all weekend long. Driving home, my bf and I both said never again. Next time camping will be at the luxury cabins down the street. LOL!

I have always been around people who treat horses relatively well. Never even heard of hobbling until the last video you did.
Nobody does that here. It looks dangerous and no one wants to risk their horse. Hobbling can cause horses to break their legs. I would never risk it. If you do the hobbling thing you are asking for trouble.

We spent time riding in the mountains and we would use a highline at night to tie our horses to. It's a rope strung between two trees that the horses were tied to with another rope long enough for them to eat and lay down if they wanted to. I know Raleigh is confident that her horse won't leave her but being in the middle of nowhere you don't want to chance your horse taking off or being spooked and leaving you alone. Back when I started riding in the mountains this was your worst fear. There were no cell phones and satellite phones were way to expensive. To us this was the safest way we could help ensure our horses would be there in the morning.

That’s why you need to know what you are doing before you just go and hobble a horse, especially one that’s has never been. Very rare would it cause a horse to break its leg. If anything it can save a horse from breaking one. Hobble training can teach a horse to stay calm if it were to get into a nasty situation. Horses wearing hobbles doesn’t guarantee they will stay at your side. Some can run away with the equipment still attached to their legs.

@@XxJaybuggzxXWe know how easy a horse can run with hobbles on. A friend was camped up the trail from us and his horse took off with hobbles on. His pack horse took off too and ended up in our camp. Let's say he wasn't a happy camper after that incident.

I would also want to point this out as well. Since Jake is a farrier. Farriers work on ranches, and ranches do a lot of travel on horseback riding doing cattle drives and all that. Since the horses seem to be in good hands. Second, they do hobbled the horses just in case a bear or mountain lion comes along. The ranchers do carry shotguns and all that to protect the horses and all that. As long as he have a permit to use the shotgun for all the places he travels to? He would not be breaking the laws at all. If each state knows in advance on the planning and all that what he is doing? I think each state would want to be involved for this caused for the wild mustangs.

I’ve worked in horse rescue since 1991. I also have ridden and driven with multiple pro and Olympic riders. To say that every pro rider abuses their horses is just false. I’m super sensitive to abuse as I’ve seen things most people can’t imagine. I’ve been involved in abuse cases that have set precedents and sent people to prison. You can always find good people who care about their animals. You aren’t the only one taking good care of your animals. Some pro riders dedicate their lives to improving the system and fighting abuse. You might want to expand your reach and find better people to spend your time with.

These animals love to work and that is what Jake is proving through this journey. Maybe try and do a little research before you share your uneducated opinion.

that comes to an average of 20 miles a day..... It may bring attention to mustangs needing adoption... but I doubt it. There are probably more efficient ways to help more mustangs. Good 'recall' when a bear spooks the horses isn't probably gonna help much.... but a horse used to hobbles can also run quite well if he is motivated and if they run out of earshot......

When I go camping the first days are the most difficult for me. I need some time to settle in, getting used to being dirty and getting routine. After that the good time starts.
I get your point about the good recall but I also would feel safer with a fence around my horses. When I did longer rides I planned my way so that I have a pasture for the night. My dog has a 100% recall even when she goes for a hunt. But there is always a long leash on her because I don't want to be in the situation when she doesn't come back for the first time. Same thing with horses. And I live in an environment with a lot of infrastructure. It would be extremely dangerous with a loose horse. Yes, in addition I train the recall but I feel safer if I don't need to use it for my horse.

Why not teach them to ground tie? I drove a carriage (don''t come for me, I was 19 with almost no horse experience) and every horse in our stable could do this in the middle of a loud, busy city. My horse had a large glass bottle smashed at her feet. We were almost caught in crossfire in a park on our route. It scared the crap out of her, but she stood. The only horse who sometimes wouldn't stand would take himself back to the stables if he didn't get a fair after awhile. They learn what the traffic signals mean, so he would stop for lights and wait until he had a green or a walk signal before going through an intersection. They're so damned smart.

I can't remember how many times I had to remind my late-Dad to use it, and now I've had to start poking my uncle about it too because we're getting into summer here!! A for a journey like that, it definitely seems that he's better prepared than Cereal, given that he has grain/hard-feed, water sources for the horses, along with being a farrier. I would totally do something like this, provided that my horses would have recall, they were fit, and I had arranged safe areas (and food) for us to camp out at night, along with arranged-vet checks/farrier-checks.
