WOW. All I can say. I paid $600 for my registered TB straight off the track. He was around 6 according to the vet and sold off as grade when they broke his wind. Luckily they sold him off rather than euthanize. Absolutely amazing animal! He had a great foundation and that's all I ever asked or needed from him, he was never more than a pleasure horse and he was happy to be one. He was vain and loved to hear his hooves on packed dirt, or echoing in a tunnel (seriously). When I went to college I sold him to a little boy that fell in love with him. I sold him for $800 and the little boy and my horse couldn't be happier. It was sad but I didn't have time for him and it wasn't fair to him. Could I have sold him for more? Probably but I didn't. I had the best four years with him and the little boy got him into training for dressage and eventually won a few competitions on him. He did love to jump. When did horses become so freaking expensive? Their price is nothing compared to the care and upkeep, makes no sense to me.

@@casdragon_5939 Oh, I am laughing. Just because the saddle is currently on doesn't mean it's been there for more than that picture. I've personally seen people saddle up horses that can't be farriered or can barely be led on the ground and when you make a suggestion the horse needs groundwork before the person gets on. . . .you are told to *insert nasty comment*. Untrained horses are being sold online for $1,100 at a low price in places like CO. If they even take a rider the price shoots up to $2,500 and it says they need a refresher. Where I live a gentleman was asking $7k for completely feral horses because of their bloodlines. Horses are so expensive now in the northern midwest.
You and I won't get on unless all of the proper groundwork is in place, even if I am doing it myself and want the horse to be super responsive and pick up their foot where I just ask and they do and soft on the halter and stand like an angel for farrier and vet. I like to toss that saddle blanket under, over, on the butt, over the ears, who knows where things end up? Walking on tarps, etc.
That is NOT how everybody else does it though. Some just want to get on and get a saddle on and get the horse sold or they just want to get on. Seen it go badly a lot. I don't expect a horse to be trained in simple things just because they wear a saddle or take a rider.

    • @blackdandelion5549
      @blackdandelion5549 Рік тому +5

While this is true, if you are buying a specific breed for that much money it's likely you may show in a breed specific show like AQHA only shows, AHA only shows, etc. so even with a gelding sometimes papers do matter as you can't get into certain shows without registration. If you are dropping $20K+ on a horse there is a high chance you show or compete at high levels as well and the sire of this horse may say "Has produced strong competitors like XYZ who won XYZ places in XYZ classes". If the lineage is good and you are showing at high levels it still can matter.
For me personally. . . .I have two unregistered horses or at least two I don't have the registration for. I am working on getting the papers for one, but the woman who sold the horse is a senior with Alzheimer's and the family is trying and shows her a picture of the horse to try and jog her memory while they care for her every once in a while. I am also working with the breed assoc. I don't sit on papers though and I don't show at National Levels. Not my thing.

A healthy sound 20 yr old horse who has been well trained has clearly shown its longevity and could go for another 10 years. Paying for a proven record is not illogical. Paying for potential is far more risky imo. A green horse may never take you anywhere and will take years to develop (if trained properly). Some folks want a horse they can get on and go right away and that's not worth less. Devaluing solid older horses is sad. That being said....I personally wouldn't pay 5 figures for any horse because I've never had that kind of budget. There are GREAT horses (both young & old) for under 10k.

Major auctions like you described only happen once a year in the state to the south for those prices and the $15k ish price area 2x a year at the biggest auction in our state. I will also say that just because you see it online or an online auction that is not live where you can phone in and bid, doesn't man it actually happened the way it says it did or at all. Area also means a lot. Tall horses sell for major bucks in CA and each area has it's own things it likes or doesn't like for horses.

I used to consign gaited horses, and a horse that could actually do all those things started at $5000. Amazing to do everything with and everything on (led around tiny kids bareback no problem) INCREDIBLE trail horse. She could go and go and go. Her spook was a *jolt and stare* Her downfalls were her cinchiness, her mare sass and 'testing' new riders.
People were SO skeptical lol. 'Why? What's the catch?'
I mostly felt she would he best suited as a child's horse, so maybe if a little girl or boy has been saving up for a horse, her price point could help them. I also figured since she was grade, conformationally she wasn't ideal, and 'good at the basics only' training made her value drop quite a bit.
In the end, a family of little girls bought her, and she's teaching then how to ride. She's done cattle drives, 4H, parades, trail riding, and has the best possible forever home! I'm so pleased I made that decision and didn't overdo it on my pricing.

I work in the car industry, and your comments over "basic training" being listed as if its going to raise the price of the horse reminds me of when people list the basic maintenance that every car should have in order to run that they have done and raise the price of their car like $5-$10k above market value for a stock vehicle. Congrats you have done what every owner should do, doesn't mean its worth more - horse or car!

My husband is a hotrodder, and I've seen so much overlap between car and horse communities, especially when you see complete novices doing insanely stupid stuff because they saw it on tv, and they know absolutely nothing about the basics. These people are so cringey, and usually end up putting other people, or animals, in danger because they wanted to have 1 minute of fame.

I know a breeder who puts a very high price in their ads. When i asked why, she said "Then serious buyers will enquire, not random aholes. Then if i think the buyer is the right one for the horse, I'll negotiate a real price for them." She said she once advertised a horse for 25k and when she met the interested party, and saw how serious they where about the horse, it got reduced to 12k which was the right price for the horses training and breeding. They got an exceptional deal for their money, knowing how she trains her horses. Maybe some of these people could genuinely be doing the same. But the ones you point out are hilariously bad

Had him for 7 yrs and eventually had to euthanize due to navicular and severe nerve damage due to shitty boarding facility not feeding balanced diet (they were cheap, trying to "save" money...) even though I was paying well over 850 at that time, 2017 had heated indoor arena

For over $20k I expect professional level photos. Would expect seeing the horse with enough pts in AQHA or other breed qualifier to be at congress/national or at minimum regional shows placing very well. Pictures of the horse where they are clipped and well exercised even if they are not under heavy work right now, but the photos could speak to their training and how they show out when it's maybe not "winter fluff" time. Papers required. Love when youtube videos of the horse performing or training are included.

This blows my mind! I'm from South Africa and where I grew up was mostly 90% or so maybe English riding. The cost of keeping the horse is the problem not buying and so often horses are surrendered to SPCA that are perfect health. The SPCA and ex racehorse rescue were phenomenal. They do a home check and speak at length with you to match you to the right horse eg if you want to jump they will let you try out the horses that are showing promise with jumping. Any issues they outright will tell you - total honesty. They have trainers that volunteer to work with the horses before they are homed. The SPCA keeps ownership of all horses you full time foster only and return the pony or horse it's illegal to sell them as you don't own them. I remember an SPCA pony at my yard was a provincial show jumping champion and there was actually a list to foster him for when the little girl outgrew him! A lot of thoroughbreds come free retired from the track but you have to know how to bring them down and restart the training on them basically. And they often suffer joint issues by their late teens from being raced too young. But many are superb eventers, show jumpers and dressag horses that take their owners to the top! All these horses need homes and are free! And I've seen them arrive at my yard with more experience and breeding and even looks than the horses for sale here 😅

I remember when you could good, solid, well trained horses for $500. Back then, you didn't see near the problem with horse neglect (I'm old, I might be mis-remembering). Back then, when prices lower, it seemed that there were less backyard breeders; because people didn't see the dollar signs. I see adds for 20+ year old "pasture pets" for big bucks. When people can't get their asking price, they tend to abandon their horses because they can't afford the hay. Around here, people always list their horse as a "Mountain Horse." All that tells me is that tells me is they've watched "The Man From Snowy River."

These horse sale vids are always interesting, but what I’d love to see you do a video on is the big horse auctions like Fasig Tipton, where year old horses that have done literally nothing in their lives besides play in a field, sell for MILLIONS of dollars. Just last weekend at the Saratoga Fasig Tipton a colt that had famous parents sold for 4 million dollars. He is a year old, not even done growing, and more often than not just because the parents were special doesn’t mean the offspring will be too. Zenyatta’s offspring are prime examples of this, none of them were great racehorses. I feel like the insane prices they get at the auction are also why thoroughbreds are currently overbred disasters (this is coming from someone who owns an ottb and loves her to death, but looking at her papers, it’s pretty yikes, and I strongly believe it contributes to soundness issues as well both for her and the breed overall)

I’ll give them credit that they gave her a few breaks but it’s still quite sad that between 2011 and 2023 she was rarely ever _not_ pregnant. It rubs me the wrong way when any breeder (from any industry and with any animal) breeds the animal immediately after they’ve given birth. Being pregnant is miserable, especially when you have absolutely no choice in the matter. Zenyetta was being bred often just a month or two after giving birth, and I just find that really off-putting.
