What it’s like to be a new police officer | The Recruits

  • Berlinda Cato is a rookie Sacramento Police officer, and trained at the same academy Davis Police officer Natalie Corona, and Sac PD officer Tara O'Sullivan graduated from in 2018.
Both had less than a year on the job before they were killed, responding to what seemed like routine calls. Their deaths are a grim reminder that the dangers officers face begin the day they hit the streets.
To understand what it's like on the job as a rookie cop, reporter Michael Anthony Adams rode along with Officer Cato just a few months after she first pinned on her badge.

alex¡s ! Shots fired 99% of the time is something other than shots fired or the person is gone about 2 seconds after the shots and there is no crime other than discharging a weapon so nothing to link up to finding anyone. In my home town most shots fired are by our “gangsters” at 12-15 years old that have got their hands on guns somehow. Occasionally they will shoot one of their own people but most the time they are shooting the ground or trash cans, fences just to scare or intimidate the locals.

Law Enforcement Explains hey what’s up! I love your UA-cam Channel! I am 16 and currently an Explorer at the Redding Police Department. (Post #93) in Northern CA. I have a couple questions for you. I’m a tall skinny kid and have been trying hard for months to work out with some pretty good progress. I went from not even being able to do 1/2 a pull-up to 12 each day. Will I do ok in the academy if I’m skinny? Also, my biggest worry with law enforcement is the mental side of things. Is it too mentally strenuous? Not just in the academy but day to day on patrol? Keep up the videos btw.

Volunteer (ALS) medic here, you are entirely accurate. It's rough, because you know they're kinda gaming the system, but at the same time, there's no way they could live "normally" without supervision. They go in, get given their meds on a regular schedule, and are 'functional,' and they maybe last a week or two outside, but then they relapse and you're back out to the same street corner with PD because they've gone off their meds, and now you (or EMS) have to haul them back. Rinse and repeat.

Life itself is dangerous. There are police officers that retire just fine. With the countless of stories you hear on the internet on how people die you think being a cop is a dangerous profession? The human body itself is dangerous you don’t know what disease you’re currently developing, you don’t even know if you’re going to make it to work each day, you don’t know if you’re going to comeback home once you step out. Doesn’t matter if you’re a cop or not….this is life. If we are so afraid of living we are not living. If there were no cops in the streets who will protect you and me?!

This new officer gets it! I was a police officer in the east San Francisco bay area and later in la Mesa CA located in San Diego county CA. Before that a Marine Corps military police. I always told people you are in protective custody and asked if they would put hands behind their back. At the station I would advise them they're also under arrest. Just like I would want to be treated if I was in the same situation they're in. At times with a armed robbery suspect it was at a higher level but de-escalate after in cuffs and in a patrol vehicle. Police have difficult job.

The problem is they change over time. The veterans will have them do unethical practices like writing fake reports and thats how they break you at first. You probably came into the force with good intentions and positive outlook but will be brainwashed by the politics and bad officers within the department. You will learn not to say anything about other officers even if you know their doing wrong. Its like a Fraternity

Awesome video. I am in my senior year in college (Bachelor degree) and want to head into the academy already. However, I’m not sure if I should stay in school and get a masters or join the force and come back to school after Iv gotten my feet wet. Is a masters even necessary? Any advice would be appreciated

I've been watching so many police Academy videos and police interviews trying to discourage myself from wanting such a dangerous career. Yet this video encouraged me more than anything 😂

The worse thing you can do is refer to a new officer as rookie. As a FTO I always told the new officer training with me we are equal same exact uniform, same boss, same people sign our paycheck and this car belongs to the city/county. I need you and you need me, observe what I'm doing and I'll observe what your doing, and relax around me being tense intensifies the fear. If you don't know something ask, if I don't know we will find out together. Some people get off on titles, what happens in that car between two officers stays in that car. I never liked snitches or complainers.
