The reason it didn’t work at Arkansas... Tito’s vodka
Not sure why this came up in my feed today, but we are happy as hell to have Bert here at Illinois. After four dreary seasons of Lovie Smith, we finally have an Illinois guy who's proven he can win in the B1G, and who hit the ground running by focusing on recruiting Illinois kids. I've met him, and he's a very engaging guy, and easy to talk with. Not at all like several of the other B1G coaches I've been around. Expectations were low for this season, given that Lovie was a famously lazy recruiter, not leaving Bielema with much material to work with. Still, we got to five wins, Including upsets over two ranked teams (PSU and MIN). We don't expect national championships here. We want to see winning football, maybe a couple of B1G championships, and some bowl games. We all know that we're in the same conference as OSU and the detested Michigan ,so getting to any kind of par with those two will take a while. if he can get us back to winning records, a full Memorial Stadium, and the occaisional bowl game, he'll be our coach for life.
Totally agree. Razorback fan here. He no doubt learned a ton at arkansas. I have no doubt he will succeed at Illionis. Will be rooting for him.
Bilemia was riding the coattails of Alvarez and he knew it. He grabbed the first chance at quick big cash because he knew he was slowly being exposed as Wisconsin slowly deteriorated under him.
FACTS!!! Alvarez was the real reason for Wisconsin's success while Bert was there.
Alvarez and Chryst. Once Chryst left for Pitt, the offense saw a huge drop-off.
Thanks for letting me be apart of this video Scott. I have so many memories watching badger games with my grandparents when Bielema was the coach and it still surprises me that he left Wisconsin the way he did burning all the Wisconsin bridges.
The reason why Wisconsin competed in the 2012 Big Ten Championship was because Ohio St. and Penn St. had NCAA sanctions that prevented them from competing in postseason games
@Andy Gygi nebraska has been a joke since the joined the big10
I think he’s one of most underrated coaches in college. Illinois will be good instantaneously and build a program that will be very difficult to beat.
So do I. I think he learned a TON at Arkansas. It will make him a better coach.
Very prophetic words!
no hes overrated cant win big games and gets blown out in most of the big games
you should do a video of jordan lynch from niu. i bet very few remember him but he was a beast
@@purplepete9505
Oh I remember him
Now he’s the head coach at Mount Carmel which is basically the best high school football dynasty in Illinois history. They produced Donovan McNabb, Antoine Walker, and Simeon Rice. They just won a state football championship last year too so I guess he’s doing a great job there
should do chandler harnish video
As a Wisconsin fan, I can tell you that WE ALL KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.
How did you know it was gonna happen? Wasn’t he a good coach there?
And you Badger fans knew this...how? Bert was a winner at Whisky. All indications were that he would be a good coach at Arkansas.
One thing we didn't expect was the supposed fact that Bert, over the last couple of years he was in Fayetteville, pretty much stayed drunk! This, of course, adversely affected his ability to recruit, and this was perfectly illustrated by his headbutting with then O-Line coach Sam Pittman. Pittman left for Georgia after the 2015 season. Bert called Rex Ryan for recommendations for a new O-Line coach, since he had just run off a guy who was considered the best line coach and recruiter in the nation. Once Rex, who was good friends with Pittman, found out what had happened, he supposedly recommended one of the worst O-Line coaches in the country, Kurt Anderson. Arkansas' O-Line sucked big time after that! Bert lost this team after 2016 ended with two straight losses to Missouri and Va Tech in games where it appeared that Arkansas just quit in the second half after building leads in each game.
One additional, and HUGE, factor that led to Bert's downfall at Arkansas was this: The state of Arkansas doesn't produce a lot of Division I players annually. If there are 10 guys that get Power 5 offers, that is considered a banner high school class in Arkansas. So the Hogs have always relied on signing kids from Texas. Every single really good team Arkansas has ever had was loaded with players from Texas. But once Bert shot off his mouth about how bad spread offenses were for the players, and that his power running teams would win most of the time, he completely alienated almost every single Texas high school head coach, and it effectively killed Arkansas' recruiting in the Lone Star State from 2014 until he was fired after the 2017 season.
Chad Morris did sign a very good class in 2019, but he couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag if his life depended on it. The players never bought in to what Morris was selling.
The excitement surrounding Sam Pittman is palpable here in Arkansas. Sam just needs a couple more classes to build his team, and I am confident he will turn things around for the Hogs in short order. Considering Pittman won three SEC games in 2020 after the Hogs had gone 1-23 in SEC play the previous three seasons under Bert in 2017 (1-7) and Morris in 2018 and 2019 (0-16), I think Arkansas is headed in the right direction finally.

@@wingates8399 yeah he won like 11 games once he wasn't that good average coach at wisconsin, he lost 3 rose bowls in a row...
Barry Alvarez explained why Bielema failed at Arkansas. Barry said that in Wisconsin, all the kids coming to the football camps are huge ass corn-fed farm boy offensive and defensive linemen. So you'd have to be a fool to not take advantage of that. Build a dominant o-line and run it down people's throats and build a defense that works off of solid run defense and pass rushing. But at Arkansas, the kids coming to football camps are smaller and way faster, so if you're the head coach at Arkansas you'd be a fool to not take advantage of that. Run a spread offense that works on speed and an aggressive defense that works off of turnovers. Bielema tried to bring the Wisconsin mentality to Arkansas and it actually worked a bit...when he had Sam Pittman as his o-line coach. Not to mention the year he had his best defense was because he had three defensive NFL starters (Trey Flowers, Darius Philon, and Deatrich Wise) on the D-line. But once Petrino's recruits got out of there and Bret had to rely on his own recruits....without Pittman...he took a nose dive.
He left Wisconsin because he lost 3 straight Rose Bowls with talent laden teams that included Montee Ball, Russell Wilson AND JJ Watt.
The title is ludicrous....no one thought that Brett would win titles at Arkansas....not with Nick Saban and Alabama being in the same division ...good video though, I subscribed a month ago and have not been disappointed...keep up the good work.
exactly Arkansas ain't winning a natty anytime soon
Two suggestions:
1. What happened to Colt Brennan?
2. Story of the 2008 Utah Utes (I really, really want you to make a video about this one.....please.)
The 2008 Utes were a fantastic team. I totally agree there should be a video of this.
His seat got hit after losing to 3-8 Missouri leading 24-7 at half, and lost to VT up 24-0 at half.
Arkansas Fan here and this poor guy was swimming out of his depth in the SEC. HIs philosophy never was going to work down here with the type of talent that you get at AR. However, our fan base's expectations are unrealistic too.
I’d say we’re pretty realistic now after these last three years lmaoo
Bielema screwed up early on when he said we don't need guys from Texas to win. That was the downfall of Arkansas recruiting talent.
Yes he did himself no favors several times with his off the cuff remarks which damaged a lot of recruiting options for the team.
He got lazy and quit recruiting. Had a lot of instate talent leave when he was there.
I have ZERO sympathy for this man. He put up 83 points against Indiana, throwing deep with 76 points & a 50 plus up. This kind of jerk doesn't deserve to coach.
As an Arkansas fan we were all excited for Coach B. What a disappointment
As a Arkansas fan I told everyone this was gonna be a disaster
Michael Joseph, CB for the Bears. Didn’t start in high school. D3 walk on turned into the top corner in D3 then signed with the bears
Cover Gary Andersen, that would be a Great video. He left Utah State to coach at UW, then leaves UW after 2 yrs to go to Oregon St. Gets fired, goes back to Utah St and gets fired again. Entertaining for us Badger fans for sure.
that was horrible hire... never hire a Mormon to work in Madison, this is obvious.
I am an ISU fan and will never forget his classless act. I always thought he was quite the jerk.
...I was standing 6 ft away from Walden, Fry & Bielema when he went off on Walden after that game...Walden was douche himself...Bielema was a cheap-shot artist as a player and proved to be a bigger douche but Fry was the biggest douche because he was standing right there and did nothing & played it off as nothing later in the week when asked about it by reporters...lost all respect for him (Fry) after that...
This guy was a jerk. Lots of personal incidents at Madison. Really glad to see him go. I figured he flop at Arkansas and he did.
John Miller - Totally. He's a very rude and disrespectful guy.
I wanna hear some incidents lol👀 he became a drunk at Arkansas
He might take over for Kirk Ferentz depending on if a Bob Stoops take the job there or not. Hayden Fry ( RIP) produced a lot of HC.
Nah brain ferentz gonna take over the team once kirk is done
Yes, I would think Brian Ferentz would become Iowa's coach.....when his dad retires!
@@jamesoconnor6991 no, after the racial crap, I bet Iowa moves on from the ferentz family.
No chance that Iowa hires Brett for their next head coach. He circumvented contact rules to take the Arkansas job- no big program is going to hire him after that.
Bret Bielema’s down fall at Arkansas is when Sam Pittman left. He drove all the assistant coaches away. Rumor was that he had a drinking problem and was hard to work with.
The guy has always been a rude jerk.
I heard the same thing about Sam Pittman and other assistants. I believe that's why John Cheney left; Bielema was difficult to work with.
When your a ass it catches up with you . He always looks for the jobs where the program is desperate.
as a arkansas fan i knew he was going to fail when our defensive line was to slow to get into the backfield and our offensive line was to slow to block the faster defensive line of all the other sec teams
I think he vastly underestimated the D Lines of the SEC. I believe he was too cocky and overconfident. The southeast is D line heaven and even the midteir SEC teams have better D lines then most of the teams he had been facing. When did face them against Ohio St. he was 1-4 and Michigan was in a historic down period during Bretts time at Wisc.
He’s 6-1 currently at Illinois so glad he’s back

Moral of the story? Good things don't always come to RUDE people.
Hey I like your channel. This is the second time I’ve made a coaching suggesting a coach for this that you’ve used and made a video on. Appreciate you.
What you got next my man!
He took a power run game to a conference that was setup to play defense against the power run game. Arkansas was just simply a team that isn’t gonna compete on a yearly basis in recruiting with the likes of Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Georgia or Texas A&M.
Therefore meaning that Arkansas is gonna have to play with some spread concepts in their offense like they did under Bobby Petrino or the offense that they ran with Gus Malzahn under Houston Nutt to consistently be able to compete with those teams. Arkansas can’t lineup year after year and play power football with those teams on a yearly basis because of the recruiting disadvantage they face compared to those other teams !!!
They were gonna be able to get a few wins here & there against those other teams, but they were never gonna consistently compete with them trying to play power run football against them every year like that. Those defenses are typically to good to just let them have to defend the middle of the field between the hashmarks against your offense. You have to spread them out and make them defend the entire field to be able to consistently play with them !!!
Any Arkansas fan that expected Bielema to win titles at Arkansas, is ridiculously stupid. He was not going to come in and out Alabama Alabama..... He had his moments, we were ranked on multiple occasions, but any realistic fan knew that he was not going to come in and win titles.
You should do one Kirk Ferentz he is number 4 all B1G wins
Russel Wilson was recruited to NC State ...grad transfer to Wisconsin ...beilema didn’t discover him and shouldn’t get credit
Bielemic failed due to lack of recruiting, player development, and his teams quit in the second half when having the lead. The Bielemic offense always played 'not to lose' instead of going for the win. The defense under Chavis never had the speed or talent. I recall them giving up so many unnecessary big plays.
Chavis didn't get there till Morris.

@@ScottFisherCFB Hell yeah dude can't wait to see you get there brother
As of a week ago he is now the head coach of the University of Illinois.
Nobody in their right mind ever thought that he would win championships at Arkansas. Who ever said he was supposed to?
Agree with your assessment on why he failed. He had it so good at Wisconsin, didn’t even have to try to get good linemen, they just came. Hindsight is 20/20, but I remember when it was announced he was leaving for Arkansas I knew it was a mistake
As an Arkansas fan, I think the offensive line was great early in Brent’s tenure. It was awful at the end. Bret’s style required a great offensive line. Lacking that, they failed to achieve the desired result. The offensive line problem killed Chad Morris. Bret’s best teams were power teams. Chad had a very different approach. So, take a team with players recruited for the power game and was not good at the power game, change coaches and approaches you get a disaster. Sadly, the result was so bad that Chad’s teams lost to schools that Arkansas would normally have dominated. Sam Pitman is helping to rebuild the offensive line and give the Hogs a change to win.
Great analysis Richard. With today's run and gun sling it everywhere offenses it's hard to do but I still like the power game. Getting Russell Wilson for that one season helped him a bunch.
He should've never left Wisconsin, it was a better job than Arkansas.
The guy's roots were as B1G as it got. From Illinois, played at Iowa, coached at Wisconsin. If he had stayed at Wisconsin, he would have continued to win 10, 11 games per season. There was absolutely no logic in going to Arkansas where he had no connections to the high school coaches or the region's culture.
I heard he was in cahoots with Barry Alvarez.
No it wasnt
The clown took a timeout after a kickoff during a Rose Bowl. I remember right then I told my Michigan fan friend that if he was still coaching badgers the next year that I was switching over to his side I had had enough of “Buttheads dad”

I never understood how that tiny, pretty little woman married to Beilema, could give him a child but she did, not long before the Arkansas athletic heads walked onto the field after yet another ugly loss and fired him on the spot, before he could even get to the 30 yard line. They made their point loud and clear. Most of the time a coach gets the official axe on a Sunday afternoon sometime after lunch, though it can be before brunch. They dropped it on the big hog in front of EVERYbody on a Saturday night. Must’ve felt particularly good to that AD.
Oh, I’m a Bama fan. But here in this region we are SEC fans too because we were the best conference in CFB and we will be again, as soon as the new seedlings are sprouting after the nonproductive or bad seeds are all rooted out. You can tell the difference because the bad ones don’t get cycled through the Nick Saban Coaching Rehab Program and Home for Wayward Coaches. Just look at Butch Jones: we’re so proud and happy for him and we really hate to see him go. He’s been welcome here on our sideline. Here’s to redeeming qualities and new locations. Saban is the GOAT. RTR🐘🏈 #secchamps2020
You should look into the KJ Hill story it's a weird recruiting story with Brett and Urban it's also one of the main reasons why I don't like Bielema
Let me look Into that!
@@ScottFisherCFB Bert had called Zach Smith to tell him KJ wasn't going to take his official visit to OSU and that he was about to commit to Arkansas which was a lie. KJ Hill confirmed it in a tweet about a year or so ago.
His biggest enemy was his mouth. In his first press conference he said he wasn’t afraid of Nick Saban or the SEC. Then he realized it was like having to play Ohio State 5-6 times every year and trying to recruit against 5-6 Ohio States for the same talent. He left Arkansas as a complete joke, a broken man with zero arrogance. He now understands the Big 10 is made up of one Alabama, a few Arkansas, and a bunch of Vandys, with no Floridas, Texas A&Ms or Georgias.
Tremendous Comment. You stated the very oblivious. I think he learned a lot at Arkansas. A little humility will serve him well.
Didn't he leave Wisconsin because Barry Alvarez is a complete control freak as a AD?
It's also why Gary Anderson left after just two years. The truth is that Barry Alvarez is still the head coach at Wisconsin and the other three (Bielema, Anderson, and Chryst) are just figurehead coaches. No doubt Bielema and Anderson wanted to switch to a more pass heavy offense and Barry Alvarez wasn't having any of it. Paul Chryst on the otherhand is a former Badgers player for Alvarez so he quietly obeys.
@@dans.7002 Chryst graduated before Alvarez came to Wisconsin. He did serve as an assistant coach under him but far from being one of his players. Belima on the other hand was one of his players when Barry was the assistant coaches at Iowa. Chryst was always a better coach, and person, than Belima. Who was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach during Belima's best years in Wisconsin? Oh, that's right it was Paul Chryst! Belima left for the SEC because in his own words " I want to go to a program that can win a National Championship" . He inherited a team and program that was largely built through the recruiting of Barry Alvarez. He was the one that did little to expand or even maintain the recruitment that went on during the tenure of Alvarez.
@@jarrodkeller592 I've always wondered what made the Wisconsin fans so mad at him. He said he wanted to go to a program that can win a national championship. That was it. Thanks
You need to hit on the collapses in 2016 against Mizzou and then the following game to VA Tech in the bowl game. Inexcusable collapses, huge leads blown.. That's what got his seat hot in the first place.
I still wonder if the Mizzou and Va Tech games were fixed...for real!
When he took over for Alvarez, he expected to get the same amount of respect and adulation that the fans had for Barry, and acted like a big shot around Madison. It didn't work.
i saw Bret a few times in person, always seemed like his walking around pretending to be better than every1
Taking the Arkansas job was by far the dumbest coaching move made by a coach this millenium, and I said so at the time. Wisconsin is clearly the top program in B1G East. He leaves that for at best the 3rd best in the SEC West.......DOOOOOMMMBBBBBBBB My football expert brother-in-law tried to explain why it wasn't really a mistake. His explanation made no sense then or now. Oh, I'm in MICHIGAN not Wisconsin. I was also totally against replacing Jim Caldwell with Matt Patricia and said so at the time too.
It blows my mind with how the coaching cycle works in college, be a DC than get a HC job at a mid size school, and than have some success, get a big job in the SEC or texas, realize they bit more than they can chew, get fired go to the nfl, than land another hc job, like the cycle never ends and it's just the same coaches getting hired
As a Razorback fan I thought he would succeed here. The facilities, fan base, ability to recruit top talent, and rich football tradition should have been enough for him to compete for titles. Recruiting expert for CBS, Max Lemming, pointed out that the recruiting ceiling at Arkansas was as good as Alabama or Georgia, but there isn't as much in-state talent much like Nebraska. Additionally, the facilities at Arkansas are some of the best in the SEC and the entire country. Bobby Pitrino had built a good team that was on the cusp of competing for titles and then came the infamous motorcycle wreck with his mistress...
When Bielema was initially hired, I looked at his recruiting record at WI. It wasn't impressive. I was concerned, but not too discouraged because I thought he could bring in good assistants to help with recruiting, given advantages cited above, which he started doing initially. He gradually built a decent team, but the wheels seemed to come off when he lost Sam Pittman and Pittmans ability to recruit and build monstrous O lines. At one point we had the biggest O line in the country. During his "farewell address" he said about as much without mentioning Pittman directly. I think he learned a lot at Arkansas, and I really hope he succeds, but he may not have the resources and advantages at Illinois he had at Arkansas.
I never heard that Arkansas has the same recruiting ceiling as Alabama and Georgia. I do not believe it. Also the state of Nebraska does not have very much football talent probably less than Arkansas. You are right on the facilities and great tradition. Also Illinois has many recruits they just do not stay and play for Illinois or Northwestern. If Brett can get some more of them to stay he can do a great job and I will be rooting for him.
@@ruckanitepreacher5618 I think he will get it going. Once he gets a good O line and DC, he can play "sic'em" ball which he is good at.
Kevin Sumlin --
I just subbed! Great shows you’ve got!
I think Bret’s biggest problem is he didn’t adapt to the sec style of football. He was trying to have a Big 10 style team in the SEC and it just didn’t work and he never really adapted. All in all, though, I think he’s still a pretty good coach overall who is also a player’s coach in my opinion. Most players seemed to like playing for Bret and it seems to be even better in that regard now with Pittman.
He has redeemed himself at Illinois.
hey scott, you should do a video on pro kick australia. i know it’s a little different from your normal videos but prokick australia is taking over college football in a way, with 18 all americans and 5 ray guy awards they are really growing the sport in australia and providing some gun punters to america

Pretty Impressive record at W considering his classes ranked around 44th in recruiting ....but the big 10 west and the SEC west are not on the same talent level....the only real patsy is at the bottom annually in the East division.
I think he really underestimated the talent diffeerence too. Good point.
Arkansas, South Carolina, Missouri..these fan bases need to realize 7-6 or 6-7 seasons aren't bad. When you play 5 ranked teams a year + the yearly let down most programs have, its hard to win championships. I would be okay with being mediocre as long as every 4 to 5 years we had an 8-9 win top 20 ranking
The rise of PJ Fleck (Minnesota)?
The same Minnesota team that was without their starting kicker (replacement had hernia surgery early September), starting punter, two starting LBs and top two starting offensive lineman due to covid?
He just lost to UTSA as he is now the head coach at Illinois
Bielema was never a good head coach. He rode Alvarez's coat tails into the job and never develooed the players he had coming into the program. He'll never be a decent head coach. He's a perennial assistant or position coach at best.
Time for a new one about his resurgence. Gotta tell the whole story
As a Bama fan, I found him to underrecruit and underperform.
Instead he brought that hideous front facing Hog. Bert's best team at Arkansas was with Petrino's players. He almost beat Bama with that group of guys. I never liked the Bert hire SMH. Why did Petrino have to get on that motorcycle!?!?!?

I can't agree more living in SEC country (Mississippi) and following the Big 10 😅 (Yeah I know but I love 💕 college football ) I said he won't last long and then the worst thing happened to Arkansas the University of Memphis got better now you had to compete against the U of M and the rest of the SEC.
