Steel Wheels are fine especially running on Rocks but Taxes the Battery with additional weight. Found that out with All Steel wheels on my British Challenger and Yes, the Wheels can be Painted. I did. I also have a German Leopard that like the Challenger has Steel Tracks but the Leopard has Steel Idlers but Plastic Painted Road Wheels. So far on Grass, no problem. I also Lube the Gears with a small amount of Lucas Red and Tacky Grease. They run easy and quiet. Also sealed my Gearboxes from dirt.

I would not advise getting them into water.
reminds me of U.S. Marine Corps M1A1 Abrams and Norwegian Leopard 2A4 live training exercise in 2014
