Biggest problem with the game is that back in 1997 it came with manual that basically teaches you how to do things. I think it can be found in PDF format.
@@jimmy-breeze that's just basic controls, though. the manual is a lot more in-depth which makes it well worth at least skimming through. it's also just really cool!
like some others have said, id highly recommend skimming through the manual as the game pretty much assumes you've read it before playing. id also recommend the et tu mod, which ports the game to the slightly updated engine of fallout 2 which, in addition fixing some bugs, allows you to push any npc out of your way so you don't get stuck behind them. it's a huge problem in the first game, particularly with companions. installing that would mean starting a new playthrough though and i would understand not wanting to do that after all you've gone through, lmao. anyway, cool video! id be interested in seeing more fo1, i'm replaying 2 atm and these games seriously suck you in if you give them a chance. two of my favourite rpgs ever!
11:30, nothing wrong about going south, and finding Junktown as your first location, but going to shady sands sure gives exact location. Since Junktown quest can give your first "ok" armor.
God that Fallout intro is probably my favorite intro to any game ever. The slow fade out from the nice tv to the abandoned wasteland is perfect, Ron Perlman’s narration is top tier, even the crusty ass cutscene with the overseer is charming. I’ve never seen anything top it, it sets the mood perfectly.
awesome content, can't wait for the next parts! love how you bring your personality and sense of humor into it, I've been watching some new Fallout playthroughs and yours feels unique and fresh. OG Fallout is tough to figure out at first, but it gets more and more rewarding as you go
Every fallout player that didn't read the rediculously massive manual that game came with has had the same experience: playing the first time completely wrong, getting upset about the difficulty, then much later looking back on how stupid we are lol
Fallout is one of my favorite games from my childhood. It's been so great seeing so many younger people trying it for the first time, I can't get enough of it. Fun thing you should try, even if it's just to see what it's like briefly. Build a character with 1 int. They rewrite all the dialogue in the entire game, even recorded new lines, simply for people who play an idiot. Also, look in to Fallout Fixt. It, as the name implies, fixes some issues with the game. Fixes bugs, resolves issues with the game playing on modern computers, and some needed QOL fixes. Like a "Loot all" button. Dear god.... dragging and dropping every item is such a slog. The mod also has options for additional content, but those can be toggled off. You may be too far along in the game by now for it to matter, but it's still worth noting.
Intelligence and Agility are the most important stats in the game. THE MOST IMPORTANT. Next come Strength and Perception, depending on if you are doing a Melee/Gun build.
Meru, the combat in this game is turn based, just like D&D. So you have time to think carefully about your moves. I suggest you read a bit on the manual how to use the interface. There are a lot of things you can do. You can "look" at things by right clicking to change the mouse. So sometimes you need to look at things first. In any case, it looks isometric and simple. but this game is quite deep.
Tandi WAS supposed to be a companion. Cut late in development. Bit of a fun fact though, if you do manage to rescue her, but say, never went back to Shady Sands….companion restored
Meru, this was wonderful! I remember playing this game for the first time like 15 years ago and this was DEEP nostalgia. Also, HI, it's BriarShayde!! Rawer!

Nice one, seeing new players pick up classic Fallout games in this day is always fun. Looking forward to more of this, and maybe eventually Fallout 2, if you like this well enough.
Fallout rule 101: loot the body outside the vault. You see a dead Ken. Oh, and in combat, right click to bring up an arrow emblem so you turn yourself around to face your target: it does wonders for your aim. Two hints in one session!
It took me 2 attempts to get into this game. The first time i didn't get past the rats in the starting area and rage quit to play other games with gentler introductions instead (eg. Baldurs Gate 1 etc). The cover art attracted me to came back after a year or 2, not realising i had already started it once before. I decided to give it another chance and after a few hours I was hooked & played through the entire game and then Fallout 2. I think i was too slow the first time and the vault died.
You can zoom by simply lowering the resolution of the game. It's an old game so you don't really need to have high rez since it's gonna be pixelated anyway. Playing in 720p with the "scaling x2" option ticked is a good setting imo.
Are you sure you'd want 720p AND x2 scaling lol. I'm playing in 1280x720 with a stretched window and the screen size is perfect. I'm using the et tu mod as well though
I think the original resolution was like 4th or 5th of this screen size, it was in 4:3 aspect too so not sure. I played the cd versions of FO1 & 2 on a CRT display, and the widescreen versions later on a newer machine. There are some settings that get close to how it is supposed to look and works like intended, without having to squint :>
It's cool to see people playing the classic Fallout! I get so excited whenever the algorithm recommends me a classic fallout stream. But seriously, going "good nature" kinda makes it harder for your playthrough. There's not much alot to build for the first fallout unless you are going for a challenge run. So yea, enjoy the classics, go lock n load build for your playthrough, the horrors of your playthrough awaits!
To go wherever I want instead of wherever I need is my play style. If you ask me, it's way more interesting to start a game and find your own way, especially in a true RPG like Fallout 1-2 that allows that, also, it's way more entertaining than watching another start from Shady sands.
Loved this so much, and the editing was funny too. Never heard of you before but I've been re-playing the original fallout 1 so when I saw this I had to click on it. It's definitely unforgiving when you don't know what you are doing but you handled it really well. Couple tips: Ian can die, and he can run out of ammo. You can give him stimpaks and bullets by bartering with him. He'll use stimpaks on his own when he is badly hurt, and you can also use them on him if you put them in your equipment slot. And, yes he will also heal slowly over time, as you rest or travel. (So will you, for that matter.) Hope to see another video of this, it was awesome.

I’ve been watching Kelski’s first play through stream lately and boy this is already going so much rougher than his lmaoooo. I cannot believe the first area you found was Necropolis, that place ruined my character the first time I got there and I was level 10 or something
Not making fun of you at all though, I think it took me around 15 restarts and respecs and a combined total of like 10 hours of gameplay until I finally was able to finish the game with a half decent build, so it happens to the best of us. just don’t get impatient and try to click on everything you can, as well as long clicking to pull up the interaction menu, and also talk to as many people as you can and try to always pay attention to small details, be it in dialogue or the game world
@@Merurudesuyeah lmao, I was laughing when you titled your second save “first day but suffering”, it takes minimum a few days to travel between the settlements on the world map, which makes sense bc you’re walking on foot through a desert
Before maybe the mid-2000s most games had manuals, not tutorials. And UI/UX wasn't standardized either, so you might not be able to figure out how to do things on your own based on your understanding of modern UX design. The FO1 manual is actually written as an in-universe survival guide, which is fun if you like lore but it's also like 120 pages. It might be worth it: New Vegas was designed by some of the same people and has direct references to the events/locations/characters of FO1 and FO2, and even the TV show has some sneaky references to FO1 most people miss because they never played it (for example, the obelisk in the middle of Shady Sands actually shows up in the TV show).
new to your channel, your video got recommended to me probably because of how much fallout i've been watching recently haha. idk how it would affect your saves but i would recommend installing the fallout fixt mod. steam won't recognize the game with it and thus won't log hours but the mod fixes up a bunch of bugs and makes some general life improvements. i started playing the game for the first time a couple days ago and it's been a blast, though i am glad i looked up guides for character creation because some stats are way more important than others. hope you have fun :)
youre playing a game that was 99% super nerdy dudes playing only...its amazing to see a girl playing this game and it being cool...if only it was like this when i grew up...if a girl found out i played this theyd never talk to me back then
sucks you had these type of girls in your life! Definitely not the majority but we are out there! A lot of girls I know love these games! Or just Retro games in general!
Subbed! super interested in where this playthru is gonna go, quick tips tho: The fallout manual that came in the installation folders is SUPER useful, it's meant to be a physical book players get with the physical copy and is pretty much the tutorial for the game, it's like 100 pages long so I wouldn't really read it all but skim it for important information Secondly holding shift highlights things on the ground, which is super important Thirdly some containers are well hidden in the environment, some contain extremely valuable loot, you missed one in vault 15 for example
Aim is quite fun. Injured arms render characters unable to attack. Injured legs make running impossible. Injuring the eyes blinds characters drastically reducing accuracy.
For future reference if you do play FO2 after reading this comment, in the old games it was disadvantageous to leave special stats at odd numbers, as even numbers determine skill points as well as certain thresholds for other things I believe.
@@PI-jh7nc yeah but she’s stumbling through it blind on a first play-through. Also idk if there is that ability in FO2 there might be and I’m just dumb lol.
Games back then like this came with a very thick instruction manual that teaches you how to do everything, including combat and using the UI. This game was no exception. Unfortunately when you download digital versions of old games you don't get the manuals. Save early save often. Generally people equip their weapons right after leaving the vault. Also you might get a copyright strike because of the intro music. (happened to me when I put a playthrough on youtube a few years back.) I hope you enjoy the game when you get it all figured out. It's the best of all the games IMO. But I'm biased, as I played it when it came out in 1997. Edited: Also most of your dialog choices and actions have actual consequences to the world, and future quests. It's a True RPG in that regard. There are lots of items in the piles of things on the floors and stuff that's hard to see because the original Resolution was 800x600 and screen was zoomed in a lot more so you could see things. Turn on highlighting in the settings. And the second weapon slot is not for ammo, but for another weapon. You can switch weapons for free in combat (no action points) by pushing the red button.
one of the devs said that the guy in power armour who laughs at his buddy committing a war crime in Canada on the TV at the beginning is Nate from fallout 4, so another reason that 4 has the worst protagonist is that one of the options is a sadistic war criminal by default no matter how you play
You should try changing your resolution to 640X480 it’s the best way to play in my opinion if you don’t like it you can always switch it back, also remember to SAVE SAVE SAVE!
If you set the game to a low reslution and make it fill the entire screen then UI will be larger and easier to see (you can google fallout 1 High resolution patch and find how to do that). There is no guide or tutorial in the game but there is a book called "Vault Dweller's Survival Guide" and it tells you how to play the game. PDF version of this guide should be in your game folder.
You can use 1,2,3,4, etc key inside dialog. A secret option 0 - it automatically exits the dialog, but it would be considered cheating because some dialog you aren't suppose to exit just like that.
I'm enjoying this! In answer to "where's the tutorial...!?" the answer is probably "in the game manual", but it's less obvious to look for it with a digital version of a game, I guess.
"Charisma and Intelligence go hand in hand". We can observe this fact in how the intelligent kids are always the most popular ones. Or in how there are no dumb politicians or people in power, talkshow hosts, influencers, actors etc. But most importantly it's depicted in the enthralling aura of Mark Zuckerberg... his landscape-of-media-as-a-whole-reshaping mind is second only to his remarkable wit, alluring charme and succulent humor.
6:52 This game's author also mentioned this being an issue, iirc. You start a game and you don't know anything and basically need entire encyclopedia with all buttons explained and all bugs mentioned. Speaking of which - never ever save in the middle of a battle. It can and most likely will break the save file. 10mm AP is broken, it always just deals less damage due to bug. Use it as if it's metro 2033 - sell those pieces of garbage). Charisma is much less useful here than in other games. Not entirely useless but 1ch 100% speech is entirely possible. Traits are entirely optional. But they add a lot of fun. Just don't pick bloody mess - literally kills the fun, you'll always see one same death anim.
Actually, all AP ammo is broken if it isn't the only ammo for the gun. A few of them only have ap and not jhp/whatever. Int and agility are the most powerful stats but you should eventually try 1 INT run. Just not when you're starting to learn the game😅 It's brutal.
Oh , oh oh oh. Forgot one bit Flares ACTUALLY WORK. If you light one up and put in hand - it will increase hit chance in the darkness. If you throw/drop it it will also let your teammates see better.
You know, in a Fallout 1 power run, going South is the RIGHT option. My starting stats: ST: 4 PE: 7 EN: 3 CH: 8 IN: 9 AG: 9 LK: 8 Traits are Gifted and Small Frame. Tagged Skills are Energy Weapons, Speech, and Lockpick.
@@Merurudesu It's cool. Great thing about the early Fallout games is that there really isn't a wrong way to play them, as soon as you get the hang of the mechanics.
The first Fallout game I ever played was New Vegas back when it came out. I'm 23, but a few years ago I couldn't play the original fallout games because it was too old for me. Idk why, but I have been wanting to give the old ones another chance, and I love it. The only retro games I've ever played was grim fandango and some point and click adventure game I remember loving but can't remember it's name. Please play until the end, it's kind of sad Also, I highly recommend getting the mod Fallout FIXT. I can't remember what it all does, but the only thing I wanted it for was to highlight items and containers that are usually hidden behind walls you can't see. In the base steam version of the game, that didn't work for me without the mod even with the setting checked. Check to see if you need it before you get it, holding shift highlights those items and containers
I should note that you will have to start the game again since the saves you already made won't transfer. However, it is incredibly easy to sprint back to where you last left off on another save, and you'll save yourself a few more extra days
The tutorial is the 120 page manual that came with the game. Called The Wasteland Survival Guide.

It's not cryptic or unfair. It's just expected the player would read the manual which is something lost in current times.
There is a 2X scaling option for modern resolutions
MO of 90s CRPGs:
1) Buy the game.
2) Play the game.
3) Cry.
4) Read the 120 page manual.
5) Actually play the game.
Biggest problem with the game is that back in 1997 it came with manual that basically teaches you how to do things. I think it can be found in PDF format.
it's in the game too, f1 key I believe
@@jimmy-breeze that's just basic controls, though. the manual is a lot more in-depth which makes it well worth at least skimming through. it's also just really cool!
Best hour you can hope to spend today is kickin it with Ruru Fallout style. Literally the best there is to offer.
like some others have said, id highly recommend skimming through the manual as the game pretty much assumes you've read it before playing. id also recommend the et tu mod, which ports the game to the slightly updated engine of fallout 2 which, in addition fixing some bugs, allows you to push any npc out of your way so you don't get stuck behind them. it's a huge problem in the first game, particularly with companions. installing that would mean starting a new playthrough though and i would understand not wanting to do that after all you've gone through, lmao.
anyway, cool video! id be interested in seeing more fo1, i'm replaying 2 atm and these games seriously suck you in if you give them a chance. two of my favourite rpgs ever!
To trade equipment with companions, use the pickpocket skill. It won't cause any problems, it's just the only way to do it.
Bit of a fun fact though, if you do manage to rescue her, but say, never went back to Shady Sands….companion restored
hopefully you do part 2
Meru, this was wonderful! I remember playing this game for the first time like 15 years ago and this was DEEP nostalgia. Also, HI, it's BriarShayde!! Rawer!
crackling on the audio is from very heavily used vinyl disk in the vinyl disk player. They user to accumulate small scratches on the surface over time.
I’m glad to know that while this video was being recorded, I was also struggling my ass off in fallout 1 after not playing it for 8-9 years since my first save file
YAYYY I’ve always wanted to watch a fallout play through but never got around to it!!!! thank you!!!
4 seconds in and I love you already - subscribed
New to your content. I’ve never been a fan of streamers as a form of media but you’re slowly flipping my opinion on that. This series is near and dear to my heart and it’s always a pleasure to see new fans to the series. Looking forward to part 2!
I advise u to use a smaller resolution. There are some things in the ground that you'll have trouble seeing.
I just realized the default age for Natalia is 17. Makes the games even darker.
omg watching you accidentally stumble into Necropolis was a trip hahaha, plus the agony of watching you lower your agility. You've got a new subscriber for sure
You were kinda right about going around the mountains, it is actually slower to travel through them than on flat desert on the map
Nice one, seeing new players pick up classic Fallout games in this day is always fun.
Looking forward to more of this, and maybe eventually Fallout 2, if you like this well enough.
An always sunny reference will always get a subscriber out of me
If you purchased the game on Steam there should be a PDF file manual. It is very good and has lore.
I just started playing this the other week. So excited to see how your playthrough goes!
@@vincentjpk that's the setting I use and it's really comfy (unpatched version though, which I assume is the version she is playing)
RURU! This is so clean! The intro? "MWAH!"
To go wherever I want instead of wherever I need is my play style. If you ask me, it's way more interesting to start a game and find your own way, especially in a true RPG like Fallout 1-2 that allows that, also, it's way more entertaining than watching another start from Shady sands.
Every time I watch this intro now I’m always like “oh hey Nate”
Loved this so much, and the editing was funny too. Never heard of you before but I've been re-playing the original fallout 1 so when I saw this I had to click on it.
It's definitely unforgiving when you don't know what you are doing but you handled it really well.
Couple tips:
Ian can die, and he can run out of ammo. You can give him stimpaks and bullets by bartering with him.
He'll use stimpaks on his own when he is badly hurt, and you can also use them on him if you put them in your equipment slot.
And, yes he will also heal slowly over time, as you rest or travel. (So will you, for that matter.)
Hope to see another video of this, it was awesome.
Lyla: Sir! She's not going the right way to get the water chip for the Vault!
Miguel: Hold on Lyla. This is every Merudesu's canon event...LET. HER. COOK.
Killian Darkwater, the character with the ultimate villain name, but is not actually a villain.
And voiced by MacGyver himself ☺️
I'm excited to see you finish
Unintentional ASMR.
(Glad to see you playing another classic!)
Once you get the hang of this game, it's really fun.
I'm pretty sure, feral ghouls we introduced by Bethesda, thus first appeared in Fallout 3.
you're funny this is a great great play through I can tell this series gonna be bomb. You're good at RPG but new to the game its perfect and you read really good
awesome vid meru
''Ok a little inventory screen'' keeps ignoring gun and knife
Got this in my recommended. Great content! Will stick around
I’ve been watching Kelski’s first play through stream lately and boy this is already going so much rougher than his lmaoooo. I cannot believe the first area you found was Necropolis, that place ruined my character the first time I got there and I was level 10 or something
Not making fun of you at all though, I think it took me around 15 restarts and respecs and a combined total of like 10 hours of gameplay until I finally was able to finish the game with a half decent build, so it happens to the best of us. just don’t get impatient and try to click on everything you can, as well as long clicking to pull up the interaction menu, and also talk to as many people as you can and try to always pay attention to small details, be it in dialogue or the game world
Btw you wasted almost a month out of the 5 months you have to find the water chip by going to necropolis and back
@@jimmy-breezeOMG it took that long to get to necropolis?! 😂 I gotta get my act together
It might be worth it: New Vegas was designed by some of the same people and has direct references to the events/locations/characters of FO1 and FO2, and even the TV show has some sneaky references to FO1 most people miss because they never played it (for example, the obelisk in the middle of Shady Sands actually shows up in the TV show).
new to your channel, your video got recommended to me probably because of how much fallout i've been watching recently haha. idk how it would affect your saves but i would recommend installing the fallout fixt mod. steam won't recognize the game with it and thus won't log hours but the mod fixes up a bunch of bugs and makes some general life improvements. i started playing the game for the first time a couple days ago and it's been a blast, though i am glad i looked up guides for character creation because some stats are way more important than others. hope you have fun :)
happy you popped up in my recommendations, love it
I love the editing
youre playing a game that was 99% super nerdy dudes playing only...its amazing to see a girl playing this game and it being cool...if only it was like this when i grew up...if a girl found out i played this theyd never talk to me back then
sucks you had these type of girls in your life! Definitely not the majority but we are out there! A lot of girls I know love these games! Or just Retro games in general!
@@Merurudesusadly, you're a minority
times have changed, the future is now old man
Subbed! super interested in where this playthru is gonna go, quick tips tho:
The fallout manual that came in the installation folders is SUPER useful, it's meant to be a physical book players get with the physical copy and is pretty much the tutorial for the game, it's like 100 pages long so I wouldn't really read it all but skim it for important information
Secondly holding shift highlights things on the ground, which is super important
Thirdly some containers are well hidden in the environment, some contain extremely valuable loot, you missed one in vault 15 for example
please keep playing!
Aim is quite fun. Injured arms render characters unable to attack. Injured legs make running impossible. Injuring the eyes blinds characters drastically reducing accuracy.
For future reference if you do play FO2 after reading this comment, in the old games it was disadvantageous to leave special stats at odd numbers, as even numbers determine skill points as well as certain thresholds for other things I believe.
but you can raise them throughout a game usually by 1 i guess so it may be even preferable to start odd
Trust me, in any FO1 build you always want to tag speech.
Not always, can just be a murdering psycho or a mumbling idiot
one of the devs said that the guy in power armour who laughs at his buddy committing a war crime in Canada on the TV at the beginning is Nate from fallout 4, so another reason that 4 has the worst protagonist is that one of the options is a sadistic war criminal by default no matter how you play
You should try changing your resolution to 640X480 it’s the best way to play in my opinion if you don’t like it you can always switch it back, also remember to SAVE SAVE SAVE!
Thanks for reminiscences ;)
hella yes
i just love how you dance over a war crime
If you set the game to a low reslution and make it fill the entire screen then UI will be larger and easier to see (you can google fallout 1 High resolution patch and find how to do that).
There is no guide or tutorial in the game but there is a book called "Vault Dweller's Survival Guide" and it tells you how to play the game. PDF version of this guide should be in your game folder.
You can use 1,2,3,4, etc key inside dialog. A secret option 0 - it automatically exits the dialog, but it would be considered cheating because some dialog you aren't suppose to exit just like that.
i wanted to play the first for the same reasons. especially after the show. theres something special about experiencing the OG games
Woosh?

This game's author also mentioned this being an issue, iirc.
Oh and double click sometimes doesn't work. Shift+click is intended way to run in this game. They've fixed it in fallout 2
Oh , oh oh oh. Forgot one bit
Flares ACTUALLY WORK. If you light one up and put in hand - it will increase hit chance in the darkness. If you throw/drop it it will also let your teammates see better.
You know, in a Fallout 1 power run, going South is the RIGHT option.
My starting stats:
ST: 4
PE: 7
EN: 3
CH: 8
IN: 9
AG: 9
LK: 8
Traits are Gifted and Small Frame. Tagged Skills are Energy Weapons, Speech, and Lockpick.
First time player here! I probably won't be power running for a while but this is good to know!
@@Merurudesu It's cool. Great thing about the early Fallout games is that there really isn't a wrong way to play them, as soon as you get the hang of the mechanics.
war... war never changes. and neither does the high splendor of meru content.
Lower resolution it zooms the game in!!!!!!!!
12:38 don't sweat it. You will die many times...and that's alright. There are no lives...just the fact that your vault will run out of water in time.
Please play until the end, it's kind of sad
Also, I highly recommend getting the mod Fallout FIXT.
