John Deere 450B Oil in Steering clutch. Temporary fix??

- I believe I understand the leak, but not looking forward to fixing it. In a pinch, the degreasing method shown here can buy you some time. This leak drips down the side of the steering clutch housing and out the bottom onto the ground. I feel like you could work for a long while before the clutch/brake becomes contaminated again.
Love the video, and interesting approach to cleaning up the oily clutch. There is another drain plug for the forward section of the case on each side - at around 3:35 into the video where you're pointing out the drip, there is another plug forward, down, and slightly to the right of the one you removed (yours has a hex head, but mine were all either hex or square internal drive). According to the manual, you can remove the steering clutch/brake assembly without completely removing the final drive, but you supposedly still have to remove the track. I removed my track to rebuild the track adjusters and put new idlers on it. Unless your track has been apart a time or two before, you're going to want to build yourself a hydraulic tool to remove and reinstall the pins. I did it without a hydraulic tool, but it took days of heating and beating to get the pins out. Like you, I think I have a small leak at the transmission output on the right side.
I was wondering what that bolt was! I was afraid to remove because I didnt know what was on the other side. But its at a lower point so I bet I am not draining all the oil I could be. Good tip on that.
I am in middle of my 350b tear down waiting on clutches. Seals etc. it’s a chore for sure. Probably oring like you say but while your there might as well do it right. Having to drag it back home is more of a b^#^ than you want.

If i remeber right there are another set of drain plugs in the clutch houseings a little bit farther forward and down lower. Your gona wana drain them as well. As for replacing your clutches. Its not that bad of a job. Just take your time. Dont rush it. And if you replace the brake bands take it from me DO NOT use the aftermarket ones. I have a video on all that on my channel. But keep it youll have a good pice of equipment in the end.
I think you are right I need to pull those lower plugs and see what I find. I watch all your 450 videos, great work there! Wish I had a winch like yours. I will probably end up removing this clutch soon here... Hoping to just clean and re-seal. If the clutches and brake bands have lasted this long they might be okay. Did you get your JD bands re-lined? I heard steeringclutches.com has good aftermarket stuff but still worried about that.
@@spankranchgarage thanks. I used the aftermarket clutches. And they work great. But yes i learned the hard way and had my factory bands relined.
@@spankranchgarage just watched the videos of the blade repairs. Man what a job. Im going to atempt something of the sort on mine eventuily. my blade may posibly worn worse then yours. But it will be more of a half ass job with pipe,welding and grinding lol. The mill and lathe would be sweet.
@@hoopiemade Doesnt matter how you get it done as long as it works better when your done! Any idea how many hours are on your machine? My hour meter says 2300 but with how worn out it is it might be 12300 hours.
@@spankranchgarage not a clue. The hour meter was missing when we got the dozer. Id say a bunch by how worn stuff is. And you can tell someone replaced sprockets and tracks on mine at one point so you kno its up there.

in your explanation of the parts overview at ~21:00 there is only audio in the left ear (headphone user) which is kinda annoying.
As for the clutch, deepening on the usage, wouldn't it be beneficial to just run this cleaning procedure with alcohol for a few times every 3 years? when it gets bad again instead of spending countless hours of yours fixing it? i cant imagine you run the machine more than 50 hours a year on your own property

As for the clutch leak, yeah I’m debating if it’s worth a proper fix. I’m keeping an eye on it to see how bad it actually is now that it’s cleaned out decently. My concern is that once I take it to the property I don’t want to have to drag it home again to fix it ~400 miles away. I have the clutch housing plugged and am comparing how much ends up on the ground vs how much ends up in the housing after sitting a few days. Ground good clutch housing bad
@@spankranchgarage could always check the other side as well, Might aswell dump some fuel in there while youre at it. if youre actually planning on running it a lot on another property that far a way go ahead and fix it, would be more content for the youtubes anyway :). although splitting the enire track and drive motor and clutch for a single seal does not seem hardly worth a few fillups of gear oil and a couple of cleaning cycles with fuel in the long run.

Wow. Here petrol is 3.95/gallon. Kerosene is over 6.00/gallon and diesel is in the middle.

It is not. I will have a smaller 350c for sale this summer however
