For everyone talking about or annoyed about the grenade timing I have a rationalisation that fixes it in my mind: The grende pin is pulled but the lever, which must spring off to start the grenade fuse, was kept in place by pressure from Leons arm/wrists. From the time the arms fall to the side the timing just about works.
From the moment stansfield moves the vest the timer is 1 second short of a 5 second fuse, meaning that was the correct time that the spoon disconnected from the grenade since its rare that its exactly 5 seconds. Have seen videos of them going off 1 to 2 seconds after being thrown not even hitting the floor so a 1 second discrepancy is very realistic. From when his arms fall to the side its almost 10 seconds grenades going back to vietnam and korea had 5 second fuses so you are correct in that the timing works but realistically he removed the pressure off of the vest as soon as he moved his hands to stansfields, so youd have to assume the right amount of pressure is being put with the vest in its current orientation and the moving of the flap to reveal the ordinance is what gave the clearance for the top left or right since they both look like theyre missing pins or the right side is just looking like the pin for the one below it, meaning he was never putting enough pressure to hold the spoon on the grenade in the first place it was the pressure of the vest and the spoon being against his chest keeping them together. Or we can all stop arguing over hollywood not knowing shit about guns and explosives as we already know that and accept the scene for what it was and that was one of the best fuck you's to one of the best villains written in recent times.
They don't call him the professional for nothing. He knew exactly what he was doing and how to do it if it came to this exact situation. He almost walked away from an entire SWAT team trying to kill him.
Here's a fun fact: literally only perverse people under lucifer's dogmas and bondage can find it in themselves to curse. Fyi, that's just a fallen angel in u acting as u, through u, for u during those moments.
For those chatting about the grenade having so much time to explode, you can hear clearly that when Stanfield opens the vest a perfect click sounds indicating the releasing of the lever and activation of the one grenade that would make the others exploed in chain reaction. So the attention to detail is perfect.

I love that all he could say in that moment was “Shit”. There was absolutely nothing he could’ve done. He brought EVERYONE and it still didn’t save him.
I was 16 when this movie came out. Love seeing the simple little things of that era that never really stood out before, i.e. cars, fashion, the streets, how the sun just seemed to shine brighter. Guess the older I get, the more I miss the 90's. Anyhoo, to this day still one of my all time favorite films.
Gary Oldman's deranged facial expressions and mood swings throughout playing the drugged up Stansfield were superb. Nobody knew he'd put so much emphasis on the word "EVERYONE" that was his little twist.
That's so heartbreaking. Leon comes up with the brilliant way to get out of the melee and he's ALMOST THERE and Stansfield plugs him. But he got the last laugh. Just beautiful

Leon pulled the pin but held to his own jacket, which held back the catch on one grenade. Stansfield released the catch by disturbing Leon's hands. Moving the jacket didnt make a difference but allowed Stansfield to see his impending demise.

That's the only cut of Leon I've ever watched. My blu ray includes both versions, but I can't imagine it censored. PS. The so-called directors cut is how UK veiwers saw in it cinemas when it was originally released.
Alright for all of you "Took a long time" THE PIN DOES NOT SET OFF THE GRENADE. The 'Spoon' (metal stick on the sides of all grenades) is what trips the fuse, You are meant to be able to pressure that after pulling the pin so you can throw it whenever, You can even re-pin grenades if the spoon isnt tripped. Opening the vest let that go. The most unrealistic part is the massive explosion from (Thermite?) Grenades.
I may be wrong, but from what I remember from the movie, they are in the maintenance part of the building, with lot of (probably) gas pipes around them. Would that cause such and explosion?

The first film I ever saw that introduced me to Jean Reno was The Big Blue. I didn't even preview what it was about; just a movie to fill time. He blew me away in that. He was larger than life and inhabited that role in a "small" film so I paid attention to spotting his name in anything there after. Great job in Ronin too. He's very personable, when he's not killing people and even then most of the time.
Saw this spontaneous, 1 of most beautiful films I've seen, I'm a boy, and cried near end. Acting, soundtrack, cinematography, character relationship chemistry, esp shocked with Portman only a child, just incredibly beautifully well done!!
Jean Reno deserves all the accolades he has received for his incredible performance in this movie but let's not forget the unbelievably cute and spunky Mathilda and the great job that Natalie Portman did. Really my favorite movie that she was in. Even though she grew up into an incredibly hot adult actress.

@Joseph Mercel Unpopular opinion: The Snider cut should have been two movies, a part 1 and a part 2. As is, people will be stopping the film at some point on their own. Such are the times in which we live. If theaters were open, you wouldn't get a chance to pause/stop and pick back up later. Good, intellectually honest actors get a sense if principal photography is going well or badly generally (especially if they all but phoning it in themselves...), but indeed its impossible in the moment to know if something will end up being a masterpiece and most especially a cult classic. Sam Raimi is probably still shaking his head at the success of Evil Dead.

They also had spoons on them, as well. I'd least believe that his vest kept the spoon in place when the pin was removed. And when Stansfield opened the vest, the spoon released and set the fuse. Even if he got running after his expletive, he already lost 4 seconds. And most grenades can go off anywhere from a couple of seconds to less than a few. Ergo, he was dead the moment he opened the vest to check.
The " I love you" before Mathilda escaped was heart breaking. Same goes for when she returned home to her dead family at the beginning of the film. To try not to die and break down is deeply terrifying.

The musical outro is Sting's "Shape of my heart" just adds such poignancy to what was - is - a masterpiece. So much so I named my firstborn daughter Mathilda.

Such a brilliantly shot scene. Say what you will about Luc Besson, but there is no denying that the man knew how to stitch together a film. In this scene, I love how we never actually get the sound of a gunshot and the scene just moves fluidly into the final moments of Leon's life. I also love how Stansfield knew he was going to die, but even more, I loved that Leon knew that he had killed him; and that he won in the end. Again, such a brilliantly shot scene! Filmmakers today would serve themselves well to look back at what made films great back in the day. Films have changed so much and filmmakers today don't come anywhere near films of only 20-years ago!

I read something interesting about the sequel to this movie, the script was done for Natalie's character to return as main protagonist, the title was Mathilda, but after a disagreement with Luc Besson and the Gaumont Film Company on how to proceed with the film, Besson and director Olivier Megaton reworked the script into a standalone film named Colombiana with Zoe Saldana. The movie is not bad, but would have loved to see Natalie as Mathilda again.
I always felt that the guy old Tony who kept Leons money, was a bit shady. I dont know, his body language at that scene looks like he is telling her lies. I was wandering if Mathilda really found her money when she got older. Now that would be a nice sequel script..Mathilda as a grown up woman, who looks back at Leons legacy and returns to ask for her money only to find that the guy Tony had them given to a new villain ot something...or that he bacomes a villain.

He just used Leon as a means to an end. He never had any intentions of paying him his money. More than likely he would have tried to kill Leon once he got older and wasn't for for "cleaning"... Matilda growing up and coming for him would be an awesome movie and they could do that even now.
I started caring for one of my mums plants and drinking lots of milk after I first watched this film...the novelty wore off after a couple of days though.
and that's why you will NEVER be as tough as LEON!! I did the plant and milk thing, and watched old Hollywood musicals too, and later went on to serve 22yrs Special Air Service :)
This film really hit me. Leon had loved and lost, then believed that killing was his only purpose, while Mathilda lost the only person she cared about, and thrown together by chance, they both found purpose and a reason to live in each other.
Rewatched this film with my mother the other night. The first 20 minutes of the movie made me sad than any other garbage that usually come out these days. Such a good original movie with excellent action piece and character building.

With such a perfect cast of the Underrated Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, Gary Oldman, and so many others, it literally created a film that was perfect with such a strong emotional, action-packed storyline and what a soundtrack. Honestly, one of the very few films, that you can truly say has no flaws, and one that everyone can agree is perfect. Jean Reno truly nailed the performance, and it's amazing to see how underrated he is, and Natalie had such great talent, also nailing the role, and the film is literally indescribable, just a masterpiece. Luc Besson as a director, Literally proved that you don't need such a budget to accomplish these things, and what an era it is, and what a big name for European Films, in comparison with Americans that need such a big budget to accomplish the effects, in my opinion. Just a masterpiece, see it for yourself, with no regrets at all. A film, that I will never forget, and truly won't ever get its ultimate full credit for. Legendary.

There is no perfect "click" though. It's just the sound of the grenades/metal moving while he opens the vest. It's not a distinct "click".

THE PIN DOES NOT SET OFF THE GRENADE. The 'Spoon' (metal stick on the sides of all grenades) is what trips the fuse, You are meant to be able to pressure that after pulling the pin so you can throw it whenever, You can even re-pin grenades if the spoon isnt tripped.
Opening the vest let that go.
The most unrealistic part is the massive explosion from (Thermite?) Grenades.

I may be wrong, but from what I remember from the movie, they are in the maintenance part of the building, with lot of (probably) gas pipes around them. Would that cause such and explosion?
First time had watched it in a countryside in 1996. I was so overwhelmed and left my friends and run to my home. Cryied a lot because of this movie.

Definitely one of the best action movies.
The first film I ever saw that introduced me to Jean Reno was The Big Blue. I didn't even preview what it was about; just a movie to fill time. He blew me away in that. He was larger than life and inhabited that role in a "small" film so I paid attention to spotting his name in anything there after. Great job in Ronin too. He's very personable, when he's not killing people and even then most of the time.
Ronin is another great action movie,and yes Reno is a phenomenal actor.

Saw this spontaneous, 1 of most beautiful films I've seen, I'm a boy, and cried near end. Acting, soundtrack, cinematography, character relationship chemistry, esp shocked with Portman only a child, just incredibly beautifully well done!!
Jean Reno deserves all the accolades he has received for his incredible performance in this movie but let's not forget the unbelievably cute and spunky Mathilda and the great job that Natalie Portman did. Really my favorite movie that she was in. Even though she grew up into an incredibly hot adult actress.

@Joseph Mercel Unpopular opinion: The Snider cut should have been two movies, a part 1 and a part 2. As is, people will be stopping the film at some point on their own. Such are the times in which we live. If theaters were open, you wouldn't get a chance to pause/stop and pick back up later.
Good, intellectually honest actors get a sense if principal photography is going well or badly generally (especially if they all but phoning it in themselves...), but indeed its impossible in the moment to know if something will end up being a masterpiece and most especially a cult classic. Sam Raimi is probably still shaking his head at the success of Evil Dead.

They also had spoons on them, as well. I'd least believe that his vest kept the spoon in place when the pin was removed. And when Stansfield opened the vest, the spoon released and set the fuse. Even if he got running after his expletive, he already lost 4 seconds. And most grenades can go off anywhere from a couple of seconds to less than a few. Ergo, he was dead the moment he opened the vest to check.

The " I love you" before Mathilda escaped was heart breaking. Same goes for when she returned home to her dead family at the beginning of the film. To try not to die and break down is deeply terrifying.

The musical outro is Sting's "Shape of my heart" just adds such poignancy to what was - is - a masterpiece. So much so I named my firstborn daughter Mathilda.
I named my Son Leon...and my Daughter Mathilda...My wife says she gets to name the next...I want Stansfield!!
Gary Oldman was effing incredible in this. He’s always amazing, but this role was something extremely special. He was proper scary!

Such a brilliantly shot scene. Say what you will about Luc Besson, but there is no denying that the man knew how to stitch together a film. In this scene, I love how we never actually get the sound of a gunshot and the scene just moves fluidly into the final moments of Leon's life. I also love how Stansfield knew he was going to die, but even more, I loved that Leon knew that he had killed him; and that he won in the end. Again, such a brilliantly shot scene! Filmmakers today would serve themselves well to look back at what made films great back in the day. Films have changed so much and filmmakers today don't come anywhere near films of only 20-years ago!

I read something interesting about the sequel to this movie, the script was done for Natalie's character to return as main protagonist, the title was Mathilda, but after a disagreement with Luc Besson and the Gaumont Film Company on how to proceed with the film, Besson and director Olivier Megaton reworked the script into a standalone film named Colombiana with Zoe Saldana. The movie is not bad, but would have loved to see Natalie as Mathilda again.
Natalie Portman could do a sequel now and it would be awesome.

I always felt that the guy old Tony who kept Leons money, was a bit shady. I dont know, his body language at that scene looks like he is telling her lies. I was wandering if Mathilda really found her money when she got older. Now that would be a nice sequel script..Mathilda as a grown up woman, who looks back at Leons legacy and returns to ask for her money only to find that the guy Tony had them given to a new villain ot something...or that he bacomes a villain.
@@CODINE80 Tony absolutely was a villain...but not in the traditional sense...he's a go between for people looking to murder really vale in the criminal underworld. He just used Leon as a means to an end. He never had any intentions of paying him his money. More than likely he would have tried to kill Leon once he got older and wasn't for for "cleaning"... Matilda growing up and coming for him would be an awesome movie and they could do that even now.

This film really hit me. Leon had loved and lost, then believed that killing was his only purpose, while Mathilda lost the only person she cared about, and thrown together by chance, they both found purpose and a reason to live in each other.
Rewatched this film with my mother the other night. The first 20 minutes of the movie made me sad than any other garbage that usually come out these days. Such a good original movie with excellent action piece and character building.
But love is what ultimately cost him his life. Very bittersweet.....
In all honesty, Today’s Besson has lost all his splendor but the 90s were really the best work & he will remain as such. ❤

Such a sad scene, but a touching one. Honestly wish he got to live. A truly unforgettable masterpiece, and a touching film. With such a perfect cast of the Underrated Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, Gary Oldman, and so many others, it literally created a film that was perfect with such a strong emotional, action-packed storyline and what a soundtrack. Honestly, one of the very few films, that you can truly say has no flaws, and one that everyone can agree is perfect. Jean Reno truly nailed the performance, and it's amazing to see how underrated he is, and Natalie had such great talent, also nailing the role, and the film is literally indescribable, just a masterpiece. Luc Besson as a director, Literally proved that you don't need such a budget to accomplish these things, and what an era it is, and what a big name for European Films, in comparison with Americans that need such a big budget to accomplish the effects, in my opinion. Just a masterpiece, see it for yourself, with no regrets at all. A film, that I will never forget, and truly won't ever get its ultimate full credit for. Legendary.
