to answer a question - there were battery operated radios and phonographs. My dad had a Zenith radio with him during his four years in the Navy during WWII. The portrayal of life shown here is nothing like I lived through in the upper west side of Manhattan. I watched the show because I was 13 and had a crush on Annette!
Doris Packer (Mrs. Abernathy) was best known as Mrs. Rayburn, the principal on "Leave it to Beaver," and Mrs. Osborne on "Dobie Gillis." Ralph Dumke (Mr. Abernathy) made the transition from Broadway to Hollywood in the mid 1940s and was very busy during the early years of television. He's probably best-remembered as the mendacious Tiny Duffy in the 1949 classic "All the King's Men."
Some of it was this way, but like most TV of the 50s and almost all Disney productions, it was a glamorized version of it. People in the 50s weren't into Reality TV; they wanted to escape their real lives for a few hours and watch picture perfect people in comfortable surroundings.
Jim Maypen was played by Irving Bacon, a character actor with over 500 appearances in movies and on television. Bacon's forte was a service position such as chauffeurs, bartenders, mailmen, and cab drivers. He's probably best remembered as Mr. Crumb, the postman in the Blondie movie series in the 40s.
The one totally ridiculous thread running through all of this (and trust me I love these old shows, I was a dedicated mini-mousketeer) is the outdated music and dancing. The background music is big band and the dancing is the jitter bug, when spotlighted. They do dance the lindy, but they really lean into 1942!! You know(!) this was at the request of Walt Disney. This was 1958; the absolute flaming moment of the radio being taken over by rock n roll. Elvis was just headed into the army; American Bandstand, "The Stroll" the Cha, Cha; Elvis; Little Richard; Chuck Berry; Jerry Lee Lewis; "The Cat with the Curl" (Bill Haley and the Comets) Richie Valens, The "Big Bopper" had already had some of their biggest hits. I think Connie Stevens was playing in Hawaiian Eye... etc. You don't hear ANY of it, or reference to it.
Are they not jiving rather than doing the jitterbug? This kind of music was always standard on early TV. They have to get permission from artists to use and normally user fees are outrageous.
I like the Abernathy family. They seem like nice people. Not snobbish like Laura or Aunt Lila. I wonder why Steve picked Laura as a girlfriend with the way she's treating Annette and Jet.
He was better off having Annette as a girlfriend rather than Laura because Laura has no manners when it comes to newcomer and that Laura can do whatever she wants to do because she is Steve's rude girlfriend. I predict that Annette will win and Laura will realize very late that Laura treated Annette very poorly and Steve will dump Laura like a 5 day old trash. Date and time: Unknown
Me, I'm never going back to 2020. I watch these episodes every day. When I die I want to end up on that hayride with everyone. Everyone is singing and happy .... Except Laura.
@@alinamonteagudo6007 Yes, they certainly had batteries back then and the batteries were hidden making it very impossible to have this device solar because solar is just brand new - about 20 years old.

Up to a point. The '50's seem idyllic to a lot of adults now, but they were children in the '50's.. Not as much responsibility then, but now they are grown. I'm already starting to hear the adults of the '60's and 70's talk a bout how today's kids are going to hell in a hand basket And we '50's kids heard our parents say the same things about us..
No. First of all this is a story about rich families. No one had a maid, or jewelry, or knew how to play the piano, or had a piano. We wore slacks after school, and skirts and socks in school. Bobby socks in white, Sneakers, saddle shoes. Crinoline under swirl skirts. Sweater tops, later little scarves around the neck.
These songs might sound corny today, but, they didn't even have vulgar songs the kids could have sung then, that all came much later. Things should have progressed, instead it went backwards. Some people, and we know who they are, are taking music, and putting it to shame..To think at one time, all music was sweet and pretty, and they did the worse thing possible to it. To know this happened lately, makes me wanna cry. Think about it.
Shelley Fabares, Tim Considine, David Stollery, Doreen Tracey, Roberta Shore, Judy Nugent, Tommy Cole, Sharon Baird, Steve Stevens. Not sure about Rudy Lee, jr. He had a string of credits in the 1950s, something like 68, but afterwards he seems to have dropped out of sight.
Funny how things were in the 50’s. I just wish Annette would have spoken up and said she didn’t take the necklace. In the end though Laura admitted she was wrong
With today's boys, they would have admired little Steady's player attitude when he told Kitty to back-the-hell up from him. And I'm sure a lot of girls were turned on by his independent guy attitude too. I'm not condoning it.
Mr.John Sutfin, Thank you for labeling the Episodes so that we can watch each episode in the correct order.

Crush on Annette?? Ya, who didn't?? ;-)
i love these! thanks for puttin them up
I ❤watching Annette, I especially like the ranch home 🏡, you don't see many of 😊
Of those ranch homes, especially in the antelope Valley,
Are they leaving Curly sitting on top of the wagon while they have their barbeque?
Sophisticated? I'll bet she wears mascara!

It's good that they were aware of Steady's chronic gluttony.
This really is a keen shindig!

Then can you explain what the 50's were truly like.

Wow, what a jerk she was, making those two boys get out of the picture! I'm sure her parents can buy her another roll of film
it's funny how jet goes, 'sophisticated?! i bet she wears mascara!'
well, she should see the girls today!
I love Jet, she's the perfect counter point to Annette's idealism and naivete. She reminds me of Shazzer from Bridget Jones, minus the f bombs : )
Yeah great connection of two really funny and formidable types of chicas!
I remember her as the little blind girl in Superman
@Chris87507: yes, that's Shelley Fabares standing next to Doreen Tracey.

kids now are braindead. Tiktok, enough said. And I'm a z generation.
Today, Steve would use either a CD player or an MP3 player, take your pick.
Put some midnight mickey mouse club reruns with the mean girls. They hate annette's good girl images. Lions vs lambs.
That's odd. He didn't plug in the record player.
Did they have the child casting couch back then?
No. First of all this is a story about rich families. No one had a maid, or jewelry, or knew how to play the piano, or had a piano. We wore slacks after school, and skirts and socks in school. Sure is!!! Did you see the size of those steaks??? I know beef was a tad less expensive in the 50s but still...can you imagine the $$$$!!! 🎈🎈🎈

I noticed that too!

Les Toil i always considered him a little obnoxious creep, even though he was supposed to supply comedy relief.
@ Les Toil ..... Steady is an Abuser..... Yuk. Laura just told her BF he was an Idiot. And told Steady he was a Goon.
Steady is into gluttony and chick cat fights.
Those steaks look more like slabs of beef liver!
The record player LOLLLL
Mascara isnt sophisticated in the 50s? xD
YES
@4MaryAnna i know right! thats what i was thinking!
Was that record player battery operated. Steven never plugged it in when he brought it over to the patio. He just turned it on and voila, music.
Some record players were battery-powered, and some were dual-powered. RCA Victor made several portable models that operated off of batteries.
I had a dual-powered GE record player when I was a kid. it also had am AM radio built in.
The Earliest Battery Operated player I have is a 1955 Emerson that only plays 45s and is compact.
Wow what a jerk
I feel for kitty 😢
What was Tim Considine doing with drum sticks? He just looks stupid!
why do they call him steady? He overdoes EVERYTHING!
His character name is Olmstead Ware. Steady for short.
In an episode entitled: "The Party" everybody treated Annette fine except for the creapy Laura because (a) Annette is a country girl just like Jett Maypen
and
(b) she sings a country song that bored everybody in which it includes Laura.
