  • Here is another example of non-contingent reinforcement (NCR) for breaks. This is a great strategy to use if your client/child is engaging in escape-maintained behaviors.

    Thank you for this example!!! Are the breaks play breaks or are they just breaks where the client sits with nothing in front of them and aren't required to work?

      Thank you for your question! Yes, when I provide breaks in the field with NCR I try not to give the most reinforcing items, as this could then be hard to transition away from. Sometimes just relaxing could be okay, but sometimes you could give access to a moderately preferred item during the break (break structure would be very client-specific). With NCR for escape, we are trying to reduce the likelihood to engage in problem behavior for the specific task we are targeting. We are trying to give access to the break enough so that escaping or engaging in the problem behavior for escape is no longer reinforcing. Hops this help!
