Why "First Time Again" Was The Strangest Season Premiere in the Series

- Season 6 of The Walking Dead was a very big turning point in the series. In some ways this is the most important season of the show, and in other ways, it led to the series eventual downfall. But season 6 started off with a very big episode, and that’s the episode First Time Again.

Greg Nicotero has stated that this episode had the most walkers extras they’ve ever done. But in fact, the episode “No Way Out” has got the most by now.
Hope he doesn't stop until he's analyzed EVERY episode of the Walking Dead!
Except for Swear.
@@avisco01 it really wasn’t that bad imo. It was a good introduction to Oceanside and teases of their trauma from the saviors
I agree they all deserve the analysis!
@@multifantv1245 it really was imo I’m pretty sure that has one of the lowest ratings in the whole of the series
does he a playlist started yet?
The use of black and white for flashbacks was something I really liked, specially considering how they handled flashbacks on seasons 10 and 11 - I hate the overly saturated colors on episodes like Scars or Find Me.
yeh im glad they didnt use that filter for the negan flashback episode lol. it was so ugly
Same here, I ended up beyond confused in the last two seasons, way too many timeskips and flashbacks. Just tell the story in timeline order. 💀
The first half of season 6 all the way up to the episode where they defend Alexandria has got to be some of the best episodes of the show. I was also shocked and so sad when Nicholas killed himself because they set up his redemption so well.
this really puts into presepective for me how death for glenn was always inevitable all the way from always dying to negan, dying with nicholas, the bat from the cannibals, even getting sick in the prison, glenn faced death far more than the normal character
From the beginning he was the one who took the most chances and even Rick said it that sooner or later luck runs out
And the well walker
@@xcels"Walker bait"
This was a really good Premiere episode for arguably one of the best seasons ever! We have the horde situation mixed in with the wolves attacking. Followed by an amazing mid-season finale that gradually leads into the introduction of the savior's and of course we end with introduction of Negan!
Very well said!
Man, I miss Abraham! What a great character. He’s like men I’ve known. Abe, Glenn, and Tyreese have been the male characters who really felt like men I have known and men I still know. ❤
💛
I really liked Tyrese, he doesn't get enough love. His death was both awful and great. As a guy that had fought through a group of walkers with just a hammer, him getting bit like that felt cheap. But, him dying somewhat peacefully surrounded by his new family was really beautifully done. He was so underrated, such a great man; diplomatic, kind, strong-willed, calm. He seemed like the type to make anyone feel at home, I wish we could've had him around a little bit longer.
yes! finally someone who brings up Abraham 🥺 he is my favorite character from TWD. he's so easily forgotten but i wish we could've sen more of him. his death had me sobbing and my brother was so concerned
@@Zeroshikiwell Tyrese death is brutal in the comics his head got decapitated by The Governor.
I love the way the show Once Upon a Time does flashbacks. In that show, every episode has a flashback dedicated to giving more context on whatever is currently happen, and instead of using a filter or other editing tricks, the characters costume/wardrobe and design are so drastically different that it's easy to distinguish the two.
Similar design to Lost's flashbacks too
Don't ever ask "Did the writers just think the audience was too stupid...?" because the answer is always "Yes, yes they do."
I wasn’t a fan of the black and white mixed timeline this episode. The black and white aspect never shows up again and isn’t really needed when TWD has done this back and forth timeline before without issue.
As for the mixed timeline? Well, it does have some benefits such as seeing some prep for the horde before seeing what happens at that section of the prided Piper trail, but honestly I think the episode would’ve been fine if it was linear. But the biggest problem with this mixed timeline is we’re robbed of a scene between Rick and Morgan where we left off at the end of season 5. Yes, we still get that scene, but it just doesn’t hit the same as Rick and Morgan discussing what’s happened with both parties with a dead Pete on the ground between them
Oh, and I forgot to mention how rushed the Alexandrian rebellion story arc just is in this episode. Where in the comic it’s with Nickolas over the span of several issues, with this it’s some rando character we’re just introduced who’s character development is rushed and is offed by the end of the episode. Hell, I bet many of you forgot it even happened since it was over so fast.
While this episode isn’t one of my favorite premieres I do like the way it bridged the new season and end of the last season together. Lots of stuff did get set up here, and I loved all the walker action we saw in the first couple of episodes till No Way Out came. 🙏🏾
The season 7 premiere was also strange. On one hand, it was well made, is one of the most intense episodes of the show, and is a favorite by fans. On the other hand, people were upset by numerous things such as the cliffhanger, Glenn dying, the deaths being too brutal, and the episode being too intense to hand. Probably the most divisive season premiere.
I love this premiere, it was excellent when it premiered and still is so good, but the following 2 episodes are even better.
I saw this episode early in Madison Square Garden. It was freaking epic. Then we saw all the actors live😁
8:16 I was thinking probably 2 years because of the time skip from the end of season 2 to the start of season 3 where Michonne says she and Andrea where staying in the meat freezer in the Winter for like 7/8 months and when we pick up in season 3 it's in the Summer and the ending of the season looks to be in Fall. In season 4 it takes place 6 months after season 3 and it's likely in spring. Then after season 4, season 5 takes place immediately after the season 4 finale and season 6 picks after 5.
Season 1&2 end of Summer and into Fall. (2010)
Season 3: 7 to 8 months after S1 & S2 and takes place in Summer and end of season takes place in Fall. (2011)
Season 4: 6 months after S3 and rest takes place in Spring. (2012)
Season 5: Takes place immediately after S4 and after beth dies there's a week time skip, probably some time skip while staying in Alexandria. (2012)
Season 6: picks up after the finale. (2012)
Man, Carl grew up so fast lmao.
Great video!
This are the next Walking Dead Episodes that you should review:
- Better Angels S2E12
- Made to Suffer S3E8
- Internment S4E5
-Four Walls And A Roof S5E3 (The episode that I considered the darkest episode of all)
- JSS S6E2
- The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life S7E16
- The Key S8E12
- Evolution S9E8
There was literally nothing wrong with the black and white. The only thing you mentioned that would have been just the slightest tad better was having it transition back to colored when Rick starts his speech.
Agreed
personally i felt like it just didnt fit with the show. i liked the flashbacks but the black and white really just bored me tbh
Weirdly enough, seeing this episode in black and white, kinda makes me want to watch the whole Walking Dead series in Black and White!
Omg me too
I really liked the black-and-white. Back when the coming first came out a big part of it's style and what set it apart in the first place was it being completely black-and-white. I always thought them picking the b&w filter over any other was a nod to that
You do fantastic work! I could watch you do every episode. I believe the Black & White for an “artistic expression” I think it was for Nicotero’s ego 😂
I watched the episode before I watched your video and one of the funniest parts of this episode was when Rick, Judith and Morgan was sitting on the porch and the way Judith was looking at Morgan. 😂 Also, the protein bar scene was funny as well. Anyway, I thought the black and white helped to differentiate between past and present…or present and future? 🤔 It didn’t bother me. 🤷🏽♀️
I enjoyed the Black and White scenes, wasn't crazy on them but after reading the comics I thought they were way cooler. Maybe they just did it as a kind of Homage to the comics not really sure but I could totally see it being overused. Great video honestly would love to see you talk about this first stretch of episodes you have such great insight and always make me wanna revisit this fantastic season
Just started watching your channel within the past week. Haven’t watched TWD in a few years and I never actually finished the series but I think I’m getting back into it because of your videos. Good stuff man
you should do one for a certain doom or morning star from season 10
Morning star for sure. One of the coolest scenes in the show is Daryl preparing for war
@@yoloswagthuglifeselfie568 for with his new jacket that judith fixed

I will say I loved the use of black and white for the flashbacks because it took me back to the OG comics and I thought that was like a nice way to incorporate that aspect of the comics and I wish they would actually try to do it again. Maybe for a tales of a walking dead or something.
the black and white was actually pretty dope, kinda wish the whole show was in black and white, i think it served more purpose than just time difference, its a nod to the black and white in graphic novel, they released season 1 in black and white
I remember liking this episode a lot. I think that the black and white made sense since during that period of the show I had a lot of trouble keeping track of all the new characters and plot point, and at the start of a new season where flashbacks aren't VERY clear I'd end of thinking I've just missed a chunk of episodes. It is a bit jarring to use black and white for only that episode. but I think it worked nonetheless. My favorite episodes are ones like this where the team is trying to make something happen or executing a plan, more so than the villain arcs.
I would absolutely love for you tackle a video on The Clark Family from Fear The Walking Dead.
This is one of my favorite seasons of the show and I actually enjoyed the way they did the premier. Mind you I overlook a lot of nit picky things because I’ve been a fan of the show since it started and I was 9 years old then. I grew up with the show and read the comics. Great video, I would love to see you do a video of season 2 episode 8 “Nebraska” and episode 10 “18 miles out.”
I love how this episode (and its stretch) defied expectations. Carter was set up to be a half-season long villain, had great development in the episode, and then was killed in the same episode; this is a major trend for this season with great one-episode characters. Then there's Glenn and Nicholas. Start of a development for them patching things up, only to kill Nicholas off in a shocking method in his next appearance. And, of course, there's the many Alexandrians (this ties into "Thank You" as well). First Barnes (who, for some reason, is credited as a guest star while David's actor is not, even though Barnes does nothing... who did Justin Miles 'please' to get that billing?), then Sturgess, Annie, and then David. While watching, I kept thinking at least one would survive or "maybe David will make it back to see his wife", only to have those hopes crushed and then suddenly remember we saw the latter two die in the trailer and I completely forgot. Such stellar character development in the first 6 episodes alone; each one as good, if not better, than the last
The black and white filter was a bit more of a reference to the comics, I personally kinda like it, but color would also be nice
I love season 6 so much! I love that Morgan and Rick jail moment where Morgan says sometimes it’s better when there’s no way out
I’m so stoked to be here during a premiere, Thrifty!!! 🤘
For me, the first season, the sixth season, and the 9-10th season are where this show peaks. Every single one of these episodes is just super memorable.
And I'm glad you brought up the soundtrack. That booming ominous theme has never left my mind since I heard it for the first time.
Such an underrated episode, great start to a phenomenal season, Seeing Rick and Morgan back again after so long was great and super interesting
Love the detail with the protein bar
The Walking Dead Timeline needs an adjustment.
It has been confirmed that Carl was 14 years old in "30 Days Without An Accident." Which means that if the Apocalypse started in 2010, that means it's 2012 in Season 4.
Yet Maggie's kid Hershel was born in 2012 according to the Wiki.
Seriously, we need an official readjustment as Carl was not 14 when he died, more like 17/18. Shit's kinda out of whack.
There is never any major timeskips after season 4 until season 9’s timeskip which is confirmed to be a little over 3 years in. So while it is kinda strange, it makes sense that Hershel was born in 2012 (between s8 and s9).
@JJ Kilhij yea there's only like 5 months between 401 and 816 if I'm remembering right
The way Rick was acting throughout this period of TWD gives off major Shane vibes
Another episode to cover would be "The Calm Before" from season 9. And maybe individual thoughts on the pike deaths.
I think Heath disappeared because Corey Hawkins was cast in Straight Outta Compton and then his acting career really exploded. He may not have been a big enough character to warrant being written off.
I do agree that they should have done the fade to color while he's giving his speech like you said, but I do think the B&W was necessary because the settings and everything are so similar that it may have gotten confusing.
I wonder if you could do an analysis of the styles of some of the different show runners. Or would that be too complicated?
Apparently the quarry scenes were really rough on the cast (the Georgia summer heat warmed the quarry up to 110°F when they were using their thermometers. No shade, all sun, and no one could sit or lie down because the rocks were so hot they would burn them
Strangely enough, First Time Again was the first episode of TWD I ever watched. I had read a great deal of the comics and so when my friends (who had been watching since season 1) asked me if I wanted to check out the season 6 premiere I was totally up for it. Obviously I knew I'd be slightly confused, accounting for character fate changes and different takes on the source material etc. But the one thing that really confused me was the colour switching because its the only episode they ever use it. But because it was my first episode I thought every episode was like that and thought that was actually a pretty interesting idea. I like black and white as a cinematic choice, and I thought they were doing it that way (before I realised this episode was unique in that regard) because the comics are originally drawn in solid black and white... so you can imagine my surprise when I pointed this comic book colour scheme fact out to my friends and they all went... "yeah... this is the first time they've done the black and white thing... every other episode up to now has been in full colour"... I was like "whaaaaat??"
Season 5, technically my favourite season, but season 6 is special to me. No Way out, best episode of the entire series in my opinion but my personal favourite, due to my bewildering experience with it, First Time Again ❤
I actually liked the black and white for the flashbacks, because I started getting really confused with all the flashbacks and timeskips in the last few seasons. I hate flashbacks in general, though, I'd rather they just tell us the story in order instead of timeskipping a bunch and then telling us in a million flashbacks. Why even timeskip at all if there's a bunch of story in-between that you still want to tell ?
The black and white makes for beautiful cinematic shots though. I can't really take that complaint seriously
When rewatching this series with a friend, when we got to this episode, the jump was so jarring i was convinced I had clicked on the wrong episode, like I was midway through season 6 by mistake. Definitely a confusing one, but the rest of the season makes up for it.
I DO like the way you explain these episodes in this depth
Loved first time
Again great episode! I binged season 6 so fast bc I loved it so much
Rick and Morgy. Surprised you never put that joke together. Such a missed opportunity
Fantastic as always! The Black and white thing was weird but another interpretation could be a callback to the comic being black and white. It was also jarring because any black and white scene from this ep in the TRAILER was in color. I remember Rick pointing the gun at Carter in the trailer and it was in color. That was odd.
For the next video. I love this one.
30 Days Without an Accident. It is one of the few eps that show things going good for the group. I think it is different from most of the early eps because of that. It is so sad because they built an awesome oasis and were taking people in. If it wasn't for the flu and Governor they could have built their own Alexandria and never needed to migrate.
I heavily disagree. I think that's the weakest premiere episode of the series...
@@kimberlywilmoth9184 How can you say that when the S10 premiere exists? That's the only premiere that I don't remember pretty much anything about.
Yo these subtitles are amazing, good info and comedy, well done thrift
I think I mentioned this on your last video, but the only one I can think of that I don't think you've done yet is "This Sorrowful Life." It's one of my faves and certainly an underrated episode. Another one that's underrated that would be cool for you to do is "Nebraska." It showcases Rick's first human kills, plus it's just an all around fantastic episode.
I think you should do a character analysis of brandon carver or talk about the reapers
Would love to see a video on Beside the Dying Fire
Review Season 8 finale concludes the story of the first 8 years plus first three seasons of Fear. Love to hear your thoughts bro.
I love these videos!
Yeah it was. Some of it was weirdly black and white, and Heath came out of nowhere.
The next episode you should do is S6E4, the one with morgan and eastmon or eastmen, bc it is one of the best episode in my opinon because of the pure development for morgan
You should cover the season 11 episodes 1 and 2
I want you to cover all the episodes next.
I know you're on a season 6 kick but ive been watching season 11 for the first time and it has some of the best episodes of the show, tonally, cinematically, and story wise. Id love to see some videos on the post-time skip era of the show!
Would you review the first 3 seasons of FTWD?
Would just like to add, it was confirmed Heath was kidnapped by Jadis and given to the Crm. Hopefully he’ll have an appearance or mention in the Rick and Michonne show
No way are you for real?
@@primaldivinity yup, it was confirmed by Angela Kang
You "Rick"apped it pretty well
I didn't understand this episode when I first watched it. I watched it again a couple of months ago and it made more sense. I thought it set up the rest of the season pretty well.
I think it's around 500+ days since the outbreak started when this season began
I mean, they could have reenforced the quarry, then firebombed the walkers until they stopped moving.
The quarry walkers....moltovs.....toss one. They all gravitate to the fire....toss a few bottles of just accelerant to cover the area, a couple more moltovs.
I love this premiere!
yeah you can't compare season 6 and 7 premiere about the confusing part. There was a big notable wall between the present and flashbacks in season 7, 2 different locations and only 2! 1 location only with Negan and Rick with the axe stuff, and the crime scene where Negan kills our duo. Also the blood on ricks face meant post Abraham. In season 6 the locations are used both for the present and past, with all the characters both acting in both time periods. That's why I think the black and white, was useful and kinda cool. At first I didn't tho
The walkers and how to fight them were amazing, but the episode as a whole was very boring for me. I recently rewatched the series and the back and forth was the worst part, in combination with the 1h duration made the episode easily skippable. If they made 2 40' episodes for each story then I wouldn't complain but the 2nd time that I watched it, it was unpleasant
I liked the way the first episode or 2 panned out, but I kinda stopped enjoying the season because it felt like way too much happened all at once. The wolf attack, herd wrangling, it all added up to ridiculous stakes and to me lost its ground
I must say when it came out I was rather unsatisfied with how they handled Morgan's return. Maybe ending on a cliffhanger the moment they see eachother again just killed it for me but it just didnt hit as hard as I felt it needed to.
edit: I actually posted this before I heard you say basically the same thing in the video lmao good to know im not alone
I really love his twd videos cuz unlike everyone else his videos point out what they did right.
I agree with everything except the music. The Governor’s music is the best from the series 👏
Or maybe Maggie’s music when she kills the reapers. That music was tough.
Are you going to cover more episodes from seasons 7&8? Because I literally pretend these seasons don't exist, I hate them so much while I'm one of the few people who love seasons 9-11 even after almost abandoning the show because od 7-8. And you always seen to shed some light on the bad episodes 😂
4:15 Unforgivable
I wonder if Rick and Morgan will see each other again
I get what they were trying to do with the first episode start it with a bang but there was still important backstory to show So they decided to do 2 timelines almost simultaneously.
S6 is where I gave up. The second half of S4 and first half of S5 were SOOOO good that I stuck through the Alexandria crap, but S6 just stumbled more than it ran and I couldn't handle it anymore
There's no way Carter's death being edited the way it was was unintentional.
This is arguably my favorite episode in the entire series, with the exceptions of 10x12 walk with us and 2x12 better angels
I don’t think we need to comment what episode we want him to talk about because before the end of UA-cam this dude will have talked about every Walking Dead episode there is
I remember coming back to watch season 6, seeing the horde, and thinking what the fuck is this
i liked Heath so much, I wish we'd seen more of him. OR (kinda contradictory BUT), maybe I wanted him to be with the Negan Lucille scene at the start of season 7 like in the comics I think, and maybe he could have caught the Abraham or Glenn death. Bc I think it was too much to kill both such big characters, although the shock was insane, so if you wanted to keep the shock of the second kill, maybe kill Heath iso Glenn. He is indeed a likeable character where the viewers would feel bad for. But he is no Glenn.
The problem I have with the black and white is that its only used on one episode one time in the entire series which makes it seem more gimmicky than artistic.
😭 I love how slightly annoyed you get when it turns black and white
Oscar from s3 is underused
What song is playing at 12:28
You should make a video on henry
They could have done it like Vikings did. They would use subtitles for a couple of lines to show its a different language and then speak English. Twd could have just shown the first frame in b and w and then switched to color like you said
This was probably my favorite premiere.
To be fair if they'd left these walkers wouldn't they have just been used by the whisperers? Hilariously Rick made a call that saved them some trouble in his absence.
I wonder if Rick just let him be and not asking questions cause he didn’t want to. It’d be kinda funny if it’s that simple.
It didn't feel like a Season Opener. It felt like we missed a few episodes and no matter how much they went back to explain it. It just didn't feel like an opener!
Morgan was cookin Rick this episode 😂😂😂
heath was added for character diversity just like in the comic 😂
I'm on s8 of the walking dead for the first time. I remember sitting through S6EP1 and I hated it. It felt dumb and all over the place.
the black and white just made me really annoyed
