Nigel, have you come across Dan Barton's videos? He's a very accomplished potter in the UK, and he has several UA-cam contributions all about making bonsai pots. There's a recent one, oddly titled 'Smoothing a coil pot' which actually takes you through all the stages of handbuilding in some detail. You are being taught properly and watching Dan Barton would be a good addition.
I’m really enjoying the pottery videos with Izabela! She does such beautiful work. I just got my “northern lights” pot from her! It is so pretty and I think that I will have to go shopping to find a perfect tree for the pot! 🥰
Nigel, your face makes me think "kid in a candy store". But then, Izabela's apron makes me think of Mrs Claus; so then I am thinking about a kid on Christmas morning, and it is all the good things rolled into one! Pure joy of discovery is a rare thing to watch, and all the more enjoyable for that. It is like a mirror to how I feel dong pottery and bonsai, too!
Bit late with comments as I saved the viewing of this video to today (Sunday). I second what most already said and really appreciate the joy of crafting this insprires to.
Thanks for the video. I am doing what I call the bonsai shuffle here in northern Oklahoma. It’s the time of year here where it’s 70 F in the afternoons and down to freezing at night. So I move my bonsai from inside to outside and back every day.
Just thought of this! An ash glaze is usually the unpredictable outcome of a wood fired kiln - matt and attractive. But would it be possible to apply ash as you're applying oxide? There must be potters that would know. Then you could have (say) a bonsai pine in a pine ash pot, or whatever. Interesting, a pot complementing its tree in both shape and appearance.
I am very much looking forward to seeing how kind the kiln gods are and how these glazes turn out. Always a bit of a roll of the dice 🤞
This is so exciting! Never thought I'd watch people doing pottery with a wide grin on my face!
Thanks, it will be a long week of waiting, like a kid waiting for Christmas!
Nigel makes everything so engaging and exicitng for sure, glad you're enjoying- Izabela

Yes, it will be very exciting and hopefully not disappointing!!
There is a lot of work going into the pots. No wonder handmade pots are expensive. Isabela is a great instructor.
Yes, I'm amazed how long it takes to make a pot, lots of care goes into them!!

Amazing, wish you the best!

I'm sure it's possible David, it does give an awesome finish! More experiments will have to come!!
Does Izabela use a tack cloth to get the fines off after sanding? Just wondering.
What's a tack cloth Tom? I use a wet rug or simply wash the pots after sanding before glazing- Izabela
Did you have fun?
I sure did!! It was all new for me and I learned a lot in one day!! Izabela is a great teacher!

Noice!
Why do you not want to glaze the bottom of the pots?
It helps wick away excess moisture from the bottom of the pot. Maybe tradition too?
