The biggest improvement to water clarity we ever had with our pond iterations (Its come along way over the years from its origins as an Anderson shelter ruin) was extending the pond filter system loop to include a shallow stream, 2 ft deep wildlife pond with bog type marginal plant beds before returning the water to the fish pond via a waterfall. It was the same pump and filter box but the extension effectively increased the mechanical filter capacity so much by the time the water returns to the fish pond it is crystal clear. The added dimensions of the wildlife pond bring so much more joy to the hobby. Its nice to see the birds wash in the stream and its shallow enough the dogs like to paddle in it. One hot year the dog just lied down in the stream to cool off.
Hi Andy, gaz from york. I have a 100,000 litre pond and natural gravity fed filter system I had very murky water for months and months. Any products I try cost's a fortune with it being so large. I've had clear water for the last 5 years constant. All I put in the pond around April may time is Hornwort and water lettuce. It competes against any algae and wins every time 100%
Hiya, I was up in York for a few days holiday a couple of weeks ago. Lovley place.. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Every days a school day. I think I might try some veg growing next season to see how it goes..🤔😊👍
Get some floating planters, buy a bag of watercress (not salad cress) from the supermarket and then just put the stands in the planters. They will root, I had to trim it right back as it does so well! Honestly plants are the way forward, you don't need any soil, it's hydroponics.
One of the best anti algae products I have ever used is Nishikoi clear waters blanket weed it works really well. Only downside is its a strong herbicide which I felt was stunting my water lilies and other pond plants more than I would have liked. I've also used cloverleaf and i don't know why but I felt it wasn't working as well as it once did. This year I've been using blagdon pond balance which I used years ago before clover leaf and I think it works really well for me. Had a really bad outbreak of blanket weed and after dosing it died back to acceptable levels within a week. What's the phosphate level in your tap water like as personally its really high in mine so I find algae blooms after a storm (high nitrogen in rain water) or tap water goes in.
Hi Andy I used cloverleaf blanket answer then followed by cloverleaf sludge remover 3 x a year 10%water change an m😊in 😊is really clear .Just a thought do you need a canopy? Hope this helps in some way 👍
I’ve always used the Evolution Aqua blanket weed product, has never seemed to cause me any water quality issues and doesn’t cause any problems when flushed on to the garden! It’s not a “one shot solution” but when used as directed has always worked for me!
I had the same thing a few days ago, and I'm running a drum filter combi and also going through a large planted bed I do run trickle in if I was you drop the pond take half of the water out and retop back up
Hiya. Love the channel. I've had very similar issues this year. When my water clarity went the same, i found that the start of blanket weed was holding muck, and the fish were routing through the weed and mucking the water. I got a rubber brush (decking brush) and i give the walls a quick brush once a day for a week and found the water started to clear and it helped to keep the blanket weed down too. It's worth a try, just a bit of work, no additional products. Good luck
Thank you for all the information. But I don't see any detailed reports of KOI swimming, movements, behaviour and body surface changes like the daily posts by Japanese hobbyists that form the basis of this information. We would love to hear those too!

Hey Andy, cloudy water? That could be a bacterial bloom as a response to an imbalance in the ecosystem, ie increase in organic load. Have you tried Pond Detox? If i was you i would use Pond Detox everytime you add tap water, this will deal with any heavy metals etc in the added water and the pond. I would do a 40 % water change, adding safe water with pond detox then leave the pond well alone. I'd also stop using the clays, try sticking to pond detox and essentials like bicarb if needed. I think doing this simply will start to address the imbalance of the topsy-turvy season you've had. Your water and ecosystem i believe is simply exhausted 😮. In the future at the first signs of blanket weed (spring) go to TAP no more blanket weed. Hardly ever mentioned but never failed me! Good luck.
So pleased I have had no blanketweed. No idea why but I am grateful. Water clarity has been good although I do have 'fines'. Only see them when I use my go-pro in the pond. Standing over the pond I can see the bottom which is 3' 6" deep. Didn't know about contacting the water company for a test list..will contact United Utilities and see if they help. I'm not convinced about the size/number of fish. I have 20 koi of different size and I am only able to run a 14000lt pressure filter. Water tests today showed nitrite at less than 0.25, nitrate at 10, ammonia at zero, ph is 7.7 and Kh/Alk is 4.5. I'm sorry to say I have no idea why the water isn't clear. Hopefully some clever people on here will come up with the answer. That new monitor is just like my blutooth floating thermometer.
Hi there are a few reasons i can think of first reason is yoo much beneficial bacteria whenever we drop a "pond bomb" into our pond it goes like yours so if you're using an additive try stopping it. Second reason could be the UV it might be working but not well enough to clump the ugly sufficiently. Finally the most obvious reason is the blanket weed is trapping and slowly releasing fine particals into the water, we've tried a lot of blanket weed treatments and the only one that works now (after cloverleaf STOPPED working for us) is kusuri powder gold, its basically a stronger and finer version of cloverleaf and its more effective ! We do overdose by 10% we have a 9k liter pond but chuck in 10k liters worth with plenty of air and it works a treat, even with a 50 micron DracoDrum RDF. I know its not cheap powder but there's a reason for that 😉 I only just thought of this but it could be high phosphate in your tap water 🤷♂️ hope you get it sourted out 👌👍
How much watt is your UV bulb? My guess its to light for your pond, growing koi, more food etc. In the Netherlands we use 3 watt per m3 pondwater when we build ponds. Never had this problem. Did have the problem when we used 2 watt per m3....
Hi Andy, really enjoying your channel and posts!! Blanket weed, I think everyone has had issues with this! I treat regularly whether or not blanket weed is present. Think about going back to basics, blanket weed isn’t weed, single cell stuff bonding together to form strands. It needs food and sunlight. It’s also a pretty good filter, so you may have noticed that when you remove it it can contain a lot of dirt, give it a squeeze and the water, clouds up! So it stops your filtration system from actually filtering out the dirt/fish poo. It sort of captures the food it needs!! Removing by pulling it out can (or does) make things worse as it sort of shatters, lots of small bits break off, now you have loads of small bits wanting to form another strand, before there was 1 stand growing, now you have sort of multiplied the potential number of strands!! Treat , kill THEN remove. Basics - if there’s no nitrates it can’t grow, if there’s no sunlight it can’t grow. We are not going to make the fish live in total darkness, we can help shade the pond, sun shade - tick, you have one, sweet!! So there’s got to be excess nitrates. Plants, is one of the best ways of removing nitrates, now I can hear everyone screaming!! But look at those bakki showers with the plants growing out of them, say no more!! You have hung your sky viewing tank from the side of the pond, perhaps you could hang a few plant pots off the side of the pond? No soil, just pea shingle with a fleece liner to stop the shingle falling out. plant the plants in the shingle. Hell, if it doesn’t work you can just take ‘em out!! Reduce the amount of feed, the lovely big koi you have, now produce more waste so there’s more pressure on the filters than when the pond and fish were younger. Perhaps think about additional filtration, a bakki shower, or even a wetland/bog filter. The number of filters desirable is always x+1 !!!! Keep up the good work, really good stuff you’ve produced!!
I live down the road in tean and had a leak on my pond that took me a few weeks to get round to sorting, I was topping up 10-15% a week and since then my fish haven't been happy so I think its something to do with Severn trent.
Just goes to show doesn't it that more Pond keepers in and around the Seven Trent catchment have experienced water issues this year but they deny everything when you call them.. 🤨☹
Hi Andy, I would slow down the flow rate and not do any water changes. Let the blanket weed control do its job. When the blanket weed dies the residue is very fine and can pass through your filters and back to the pond. Slowing down the flow rate will allow the filters to catch the fines. All the water changes are putting more nutrients back in the water for the blanket weed and green algae to feed on. You probably have your UV after the filter which means that the dead green algae which is now brown is going straight back to the pond to add to the cloudiness of the water. Also jap Matt is meant to be a free flow biological medium not a mechanical medium. If you’ve swapped foam for jap Matt your filters won’t be able to catch the fines. Getting away from that the biggest improvement to my pond, water and fish was adding a home made shower with Alfa grog and pummis stone. All the fashionable media is the biggest con in the hobby. Didn’t mean to go on but I hope I’ve helped.
Hiya, thanks.for the feedback. Unfortunately I don't have a vari pump to be able to slow things down, so I'm more reliant on the filter floss to catch the fines which is doing a great job to date..😊👍
Hi Andy, whilst im sure your water parameters are good, have you though in the first instance your filter just cant clean the water quick enough? You have some very large fish in your pond and they can poop like the co-op donkey on its delivery rounds (yes were both that old) Bio might be fine but mechanical might be lacking with the multi bay now? Ive had two multi bays, the last one of my 15000lt pond whilst the parameters were always good it simply couldnt cope with the turn over i needed to actually clean the pond, nor could the UV's in the end. In the end i went for a combi-drum filter which is way above what the multibay could give me and when i put some Blanket answer in back in spring it cleared quickly but still doing its job, the filter just took all of my cloudyness away, which was fines from the blanket weed, as in your case. Dont give up mate.....Keep going.
Poop like the Co-op donkey.. 😆😆. I have looked at another filter or replacing the multibay completely.. I think it might be additional filters if the finances will allow one day.. 🤔 😊👍
Also we’ve kind of touched on this on Facebook in the north west group but low levels of salt prevent blanket weed. I know you were always against salt but I’ve not had blanket weed for years and ‘touch wood’ no parasites this year
Hiya, I keep saying that I would try salting the pond one spring but bottle out at the last minute.. Never say never though. You can't knock it till you've tried it..😉😊👍
I live in Meir hay. And I had a nitrate issue in my tap water. They come out did a test and said everything was ok. But after I retested my water a week or so later the nitrates had dropped.
Thanks for that feedback. Same here, when I called them they said nothing had changed but 24hrs later a water van turns up outside taking tests but had gone before I could get to ask what they were doing.. 🤨👍
hey dude, my water is supplied by seven trent too.....and ive noticed a definate decline in quality this year🤬🤬🤬 you can check your water test results online, just type in your postcode on there website in the water test section.
I bought a new UV in March this year within 4 weeks the water was really murky I put it down to a dud bulb, quickly replaced and water was clear within 10 days. Could be that..
I'm going to say it, they are putting crap in our drinking water, and spraying crap In the sky. Both are going into our ponds.😅, or it could be the food, maybe the recipe changed? Maybe we should try the kactoily drinking water anyliser?
Tbh, I've been considering salting the pond for a few years now but never actually come round to it. I've always used salt to bath individual fish but not the whole pond.. I think I maybe need to look into it again..🤔🤔
I had murky, milky cloudy water like you and could not fathom it. Then i bought some activated carbon, washed it thoroughly and put it in a fine mesh bag which was then placed into a filter bay. Five or six days later back to clear water. Give it a try.
I use that in my aquarium, certainly worth a try outside! My eazypod was a crap buy and I've got everything from filter floss to brushes and even a 400 micron filter crammed into it and cannot get any kind of clarity.
Andy I don’t get blanket weed I’m my pond ,but if my water gin clear cool if not no problem 😉 as long as parameters ok , only thing going in is clay , and detox
Hi Andy, feel the frustration, I do a pre season 50% blanket answer treatment an a further 50% treatment as soon as I see blanket weed spores on the pond wall , never failed keeping a clear pond in 4 years now, yes the clean up is a pain but I just plan that into my maintenance plan each time . With you running trickle in an out you shouldn’t really have a problem. I also try not to treat my pond with chemicals, I’m an avid believer that nature also takes it’s coarse and the koi adapt , it’s served me well since 2006 .
Andy , your Chanel is Ace , glad you’re keeping it going , your content is fab and as many do , I look forward to the notification when you’ve new content 💪🏼👍🏻👌
Is it normal for my pond Ph to be 7.60 in the early morning and rise to 9 PH throughout the day and rest back to Ph 7 the next morning or am I missing something been trying this for days with food with out food anyone can help on this
I don't want to hear talk of giving up dude. I think it's the weed. If it got as long as you say it did, then it traps silt, koimasters, FOK etc. Now it's dying back all the debris is getting released into the pond. I hear you though it's definitely been a year for learning for me too. Start of the season was tough but I have been able to get the body on now towards the end. If you ever go to Chris Masters place you will see water clarity does not exist hahaha. The amount of food he bails into the pond is mind blowing haha. Take care mate, it will come good and we can look forward to next season.

My pond temps are down to 8c now and fish have already stopped feeding the last couple of days they would normally feed lightly until the end of October , a lot of people seemed to have more problems than normal this year. Thanks mate...😉👍
Andy have you put any aquasource resolve in the pond?
I use jpd mud booster to clear my water
No, but its on my list to try next year..😉👍
The reason i ask is the few times I've used it tbh I just think it clouds up my water
Adding to my previous… just because someone “makes a cocktail” doesn’t mean you should
hey dude, my water is supplied by seven trent too.....and ive noticed a definate decline in quality this year🤬🤬🤬 you can check your water test results online, just type in your postcode on there website in the water test section.
Hiya, thanks for that. I'll check it out..😉👍
as the saying goes "we don't keep fish we keep water"
100%....😉👍
My are on
I bought a new UV in March this year within 4 weeks the water was really murky I put it down to a dud bulb, quickly replaced and water was clear within 10 days. Could be that..
I have had dud bulbs before..🤔👍
Mines been bad most of the year can't work it out
I'm going to say it, they are putting crap in our drinking water, and spraying crap In the sky. Both are going into our ponds.😅, or it could be the food, maybe the recipe changed?
Maybe we should try the kactoily drinking water anyliser?
Do you salt your pond?. A 0.3 constant is a normal and maintains water clarity and Koi health.
Thanks for that. Where did you get you active carbon from? 🤔
Andy I don’t get blanket weed I’m my pond ,but if my water gin clear cool if not no problem 😉 as long as parameters ok , only thing going in is clay , and detox
Go to uk koi supplies grab yourself some resolution + will eradicate that blanket weed and stabilize your gh and kh too
Hi Andy, feel the frustration, I do a pre season 50% blanket answer treatment an a further 50% treatment as soon as I see blanket weed spores on the pond wall , never failed keeping a clear pond in 4 years now, yes the clean up is a pain but I just plan that into my maintenance plan each time .
Thank you. Glad your enjoying the channel and the videos..😊👍
Is it normal for my pond Ph to be 7.60 in the early morning and rise to 9 PH throughout the day and rest back to Ph 7 the next morning or am I missing something been trying this for days with food with out food anyone can help on this
Yeah very normal for the Ph to change from morning to evening then back again.. 😉👍
Hiya thanks for that mate. Been watching your channel and seeing you changing things you originally placed for the new pond. As you know is always a school day with Pond keeping.. cheers. 😉👍
Personal opinion
Doing/done too much mate…. Be better to house the fish somewhere like a pool and reset it full…. Strip the lot, PSB & go again
Wow, that would be taking me back to new.pond syndrome that took me 18month to 2 years to complete when the pond was new...🤔🤔👍
@@KoiPondLifestyle no such issues exist if done correctly 🤷🏻♂️
Take a glass full out and let it stand for day or too to see if it’s fine molecules ,
Good idea..😉👍
EVOLUTION AQUA PURE POND BOMB ?
Hi 👋, you've had a pretty bad year one way or another, so glad you're not giving up,but for now it just looks like we have to look forward to next year spring/summer and pray that it's a better one. My pond temps are down to 8c now and fish have already stopped feeding the last couple of days they would normally feed lightly until the end of October , a lot of people seemed to have more problems than normal this year. Gwen 🧓
Hiya, thanks for that feedback Gwen.. Temps are certainly coming down now. Just hope the winter isn't too harsh..🥶☹😉
