Another good easy way to get the sparkle effect is to set your tv on a blank channel and set your camera close enough to the set to capture only the screen, then shoot about 10 seconds of "fly races" (video static) and use that, perhaps with color or glow added, for your matte.
Star Trek is awesome. I can not wait to check out that new movie. Thank you for sharing this effect with me. Your Channel is the best. God bless you all there and your families.
Hey notjimCarew, We do accept Video responses but we hold them for approval first. We just approved all the Video responses, so yours should be up there. Thanks.
Thanks so much for the info IM! For me i'm torn between 4 and 6... loved em both pretty equally Funny, too, how the great ones are on the even numbers, and the poor ones are odd lol :)
I will side with you Erick and go with Undiscovered country, it has a spacship that could fire cloacked and is the only example on screan where you can see Scotty's missing finger. Brillaint effect as well, pretty much follows the same design as the classic series transporter effect...just beware of transporter phycosis...dont want you going crazy on us!
you can do that with many programs. all you really need is an equalizer (every sound program has one) and turn down every frequency but the midhighs and highs
Favorite Trek Movie. Prior to the 2009 version of Star Trek (STXI), The Undiscovered Country was my favorite too. However, as time goes by, so do favorites.
Favorite Star Trek Movie: I'd have to say it was the Spock Dies and Comes back to Life trilogy... which was 2, 3 and 4 respectively. To me they are all one movie after a fashion, and deserve to be grouped together for this purpose.
by far my fav star trek film is first contact its so awesome its even got EMH (doctor from voyerger) also did any of you go to that trekkie thing by the tate modern (london,uk) it was a bit crappy but i got a STO T-shirt...yay!!!
The real fx was not done with the glitter despite popular belief. Recent release shows it was done with wait for it, plop plop fiz fiz, you got it Alka Seltzer. I don't recall the article URL it may have been from the phase II group.
My honest favourite is the new one! That's what first introduced me to Star Trek - and now i'm a fan of the original series! Out of the original movies - IV - the one where they go back in time looking for a whale, and spock tries to use slang. Classic.
Star Trek II and III powered the franchise and gave it the weight it needed to "survive" the following 2 movies while still putting out 3 entirely new shows. My vote has to go to Wrath of Kahn and Search for Spock. Live long and prosper, Indy!
The best one out of all of them will always be "The Wrath of Khan." Why? Because it's better than the first one and it's even better than any of the others afterwards in story. Seriously, watching the dual Federation ship battle was like it was inspired by a submarine movie! You don't get that kind of suspense in any of the others. Plus, the ending with the funeral of Spock has to be the only true emotional moment even seen in the film series (not even Kirk's death was as emotional).
I have a good idea for a BFX build, a fisheye lens. But that's if they haven't done that yet, I would like to see how professionals would make theirs if they didn't have large amounts of money to buy it.
@pieboy966 You can't. The whole idea of a green screen or chromakey is to block everything behind it. The only way you can do that is to move the feeder, take a picture of it, put the feed back and then film. When you key out the green screen place the pic behind the footage and it will show through. Think of a green scren as a hole in the video that lets you see that is behind the video NOT the item being keyed out. Kind of like cutting a hole in a picture and looking through it
The original effect was made with Alka Seltzer in hot water! It looks better than swirling glitter. Seach these keywords: Star Trek transporter effect alka-seltzer. Then, go to the Videopia page. You can download high-quality files to use.
Well almost right. It's a myth that Star Trek used glitter in water for the effect. According to Pony Horton, who knows the original FX guys, its Alka Seltzer!
The new Star Trek is going to be my favorite. ...cause I haven't liked Star Trek since I was like 10 but JJ Abrams is the man and this one looks like it's going to be the shit. THE SHIT! ... I loved Generations when I was a kid. Never watched the classics.
Actually, that's basically exactly how it was done on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Except they used a drinking glass. It was in one of the makings of I saw a long time ago. I'm not sure how they did it in the original series.
If you're rewatching in 2023, you are an absolute legend 👏
GeneralAnimator, it all depends what kind of look you're going for. This gives a retro, campy feel. Thanks!

We share the same favorite, Erik... Undiscovered Country is definitely the best IMO...
Glad you liked it, Personaly4Simon

Bobofet241, YES! Indy Mogul won 3 Webby Awards! Thanks to everyone who voted

Thanks for the request mapumac!
one of the best builds in a while
6 and 2... in that order! Love 6! Best story, best FX, it just hits all the right spots!
fancybooklernin, yea, it's a pretty useful effect that can be applied to a lot of things. Read any good books lately?
my favorite is Star Trek 4: the Voyage Home. I just loved the interaction between the crew and modern day Earth!
Thanks, Madzab!
It's in the decsription, backyardFX
I agree with Erik, number VI was the best. Great story, nice FX, cool locations. Plus a cool Klingon villain!
Thanks, ketchupboy13! Are we back?
Like what specificially? Search for $99 Music Videos on UA-cam. They have some cool effects.
I saw the new one last week, it was AWESOME
Thanks so much for the info IM!
For me i'm torn between 4 and 6... loved em both pretty equally
Funny, too, how the great ones are on the even numbers, and the poor ones are odd lol :)
Holy crap! This is the way Don Dohler and Starlog taught it some decades ago. Very cool.
I've only seen the first four and the new one, but I have to say that the new one and the fourth ones are my favorites.
I love the Intro's Music :D
and this video is so cool
generations definetly
nice diy effect ;) keep it up guys !!
star trek: First Contact,
best trek movie ever,
space battles, awesome music, fight scenes, and best of all
the borg!!!!!
you can do that with many programs. all you really need is an equalizer (every sound program has one) and turn down every frequency but the midhighs and highs
cool,
is easy... you rock indymogul!!!
Thiefylord, Erik likes to let the wind decide his hairstyles.
You can do all these things with similar programs that use the same techniques. We just happen to have adobe products and macs.
Favorite Trek Movie. Prior to the 2009 version of Star Trek (STXI), The Undiscovered Country was my favorite too. However, as time goes by, so do favorites.
Star trek first contact. Pretty awsome shootin scens, plus the human settlemnt was sorta post apocalyptic
Favorite Star Trek Movie: I'd have to say it was the Spock Dies and Comes back to Life trilogy... which was 2, 3 and 4 respectively. To me they are all one movie after a fashion, and deserve to be grouped together for this purpose.
That's the first time in a while that Gary has said anything!
The Star Trek Movie I liked most was Wrath of Khan. Cool plot and an epic scream, it rocks.
I like all of them!
I gotta say 2. Not only was Kahn Awesome but we also got Kirk's Speach at the end. And what a Speach it is.
THEZOMBIESRHERE, you should go an watch our Season 1 Finale episode.
Great explanation.
Star Trek II : Wrath of Khan. The brain worms in this movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. Ricardo Montalban was awesome as Khan too.
All of them.
Wish I would have seen more of the Voyager series though.
well i love them all but i would agree the undiscovered contry is my fav out of all of them...
IV The Voyage Home. The crew's misunderstanding of 90's culture is hilarious! I also like when Chakof says, "Where can we find some nuclear wessals?"
this should be a show on tv
springer7217, we're sneaky.
by far my fav star trek film is first contact its so awesome its even got EMH (doctor from voyerger) also did any of you go to that trekkie thing by the tate modern (london,uk) it was a bit crappy but i got a STO T-shirt...yay!!!
I don't like star trek but that was a good effect and good tutorial!
The real fx was not done with the glitter despite popular belief. Recent release shows it was done with wait for it, plop plop fiz fiz, you got it Alka Seltzer. I don't recall the article URL it may have been from the phase II group.

BrickCreations. Watch Your FX next Week!
I always see "go to indymogul, com to download it", but I can never find WHERE on indymogul, com do we download this stuff?
Star Trek II and III powered the franchise and gave it the weight it needed to "survive" the following 2 movies while still putting out 3 entirely new shows. My vote has to go to Wrath of Kahn and Search for Spock. Live long and prosper, Indy!
my favorite is Generations. IT has Kirk and Pichard you can't get better than that!
Star Trek II The Wrath of Kahn, Riccardo should have gotten a Oscar.
Where'd you get the Globe screensaver visible from 2:14 to 2:30?? it's awesome!
Very cool!
Not an original answer, but mine is The Wrath of Khan defiantly. Ricardo Montalban OWNED in the movie!
Dude this would also make a great join the force effect like in Star Wars Episode 6 when Yoda dies.
I have a good idea for a BFX build, a fisheye lens.
But that's if they haven't done that yet, I would like to see how professionals would make theirs if they didn't have large amounts of money to buy it.
you could always experiment with partical systems in after effets or use the dust from action essentials 2 and play around with it.
KHAN!!!!
thats my fav ^^ lol
@pieboy966 You can't.

omg, i laughed so hard at the custom made particle effect xD
Hehe, yeah i guess so.... btw you got awesome tutorials:D Very nice work, man!
First Contact was my favorite Star Trek movie, but maybe the new one will chance that?
6 and 4 are the new dope, nuff said
Star Trek IV is my favorite - by far.
this would also be great for orbing like the charmed ones
The original effect was made with Alka Seltzer in hot water! It looks better than swirling glitter. Seach these keywords: Star Trek transporter effect alka-seltzer. Then, go to the Videopia page. You can download high-quality files to use.
are there any free special FX software sytems? i would really like one.
Gary is reticent.
I liked the fourth one. My parents call it "Save the Whales". I liked the bits where Spock swears. Thing is he can't and it's hilarious.
cool done...
The movie I like the most is first contact
I liked them all but I'm willing to chance it and say the new movie opening this Friday.
the new one!! and do you guys use iMovie?
Hell yes, Undiscovered Country!
I love the movie I going to see it about 2 to 3 more times it was that good!!!
The cool thing is, that's actually how they did it for TOS and early TNG!
Well almost right. It's a myth that Star Trek used glitter in water for the effect. According to Pony Horton, who knows the original FX guys, its Alka Seltzer!
omg i love this show!! ARGH!!!
glorbb, Thanks?
cool effect, im torn between two movies, Wrath of khan and first contact
where did you get that earth outline computer background
you can also use a old tv that show snow when here no ch if you want also i tryed that one it work but sadly i lost the video
Wrath of Khan all the way!
Also: excellent video. Where'd you get the idea for the glitterfied fishtank? Points for cleverness! :)
Ey, great effects in your video, but the "transporter effect" es more realistic in the Star Trek Original Series (TOS)
glitter is the herpies of art's and crafts supplies.
is it the same for reverse transportation (fading out instead of in?
I like the one with Han Solo. Which one was that?
my fav trek movie would have to be the cage. and cool FX's.
The new Star Trek is going to be my favorite. ...cause I haven't liked Star Trek since I was like 10 but JJ Abrams is the man and this one looks like it's going to be the shit. THE SHIT! ... I loved Generations when I was a kid. Never watched the classics.
with what program i can edit that time of videos?
i got a great idea for ur next build
some sort of tripod for your arm so u can put ur video camera on your arm for FPS videos
thanks for reading
Wrath of Khan is lol. It was good to but I like First Contact the most (:
But I cant wait to see the new one!
can you do a warp effect on the mac i want to know how to do that and a phaser effect
I cant decide I like them all
Star wars > Star trek
but...i also like star trek....
and Generations is my fav :P
Actually, that's basically exactly how it was done on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Except they used a drinking glass. It was in one of the makings of I saw a long time ago. I'm not sure how they did it in the original series.
I downloaded the transporter short but all i got was the sound. not the video. is this correct?
