Christian Baumgartner totally. Most common misconception about snares.. especially in tracking.. shallow drums get hugeee sounds, no need for a 6.5” or 8” deep snare for that big sound. I have a ton of snares and my favs and most recorded snares are the brass, steel and edge drums and they’re all shallower compared to the other snares
It's incredible how much range that piccolo snare has. At low, it nearly had the depth of a 6.5"X14". I see now why so many drummers have had a piccolo as their go-to drum.
Still have one of these. One of the all time best sounding piccolo snares. This the one that Dave Weckl used on his old drum instructional videos. So good. The clear coat on mine is a bit ratty.
This is a Great Picolo Snare Drum. I used it for Years! Same Model Number. Same Brass. Im just reminescing on my Glory days. I won many awards with this Snare. Hard to find. Wish I could get the original back from school. But that was ages ago! And I mean, ages ago. Ha. But anywho, this snare is well worth it. If someone hasnt already bought it. : (
It is the exact same snare that Vinnie used. I still have mine, it's awesome and I would never part way with it. It has it's own sound very different than other snares. You can tighten and dial in the snare wires from both sides of the strainer. The snare wires are longer than the 14 inch diameter of the shell. The strainer mechanism stretches the wires across the whole surface of the head beyond each bearing edge and results in a sensitivity out of this world.
Bought this Yamaha piccolo snare model sd493 just bcoz of Dave Weckl's instructional video back in 1996.....heavy as hell and i couldn't even play it live at certain venues cause the sound tech guys would say that it was bit too loud for it's size......great sound that snare produced....those were the good old days when me was still young.....😁😁😁
I had one of these - why I sold it, I'll never know. IMO one of the best brass snare drums ever made. When mic'd up it could take the top of your head off. It cut through at any volume.
GREAT video!!! This guys knows how to do a drum demo! He showed all three tuning ranges, had a new head on it and played extremely well! Thanks for sharing this.
1. The snare sounds incredible 2. Its all in the head configurations and tuning 3. It doesn’t sound like a can it sounds tight and like everything else in life it has a place and a time for it. Meaning its not a jazz ensemble snare but it would be great for church, gospel, funk- you get the picture... Great job with the video! Keep them coming! Memphis drum shop is of the chain!!
managed to find one of these new old stock. best purchase of my life. between this and my supra, that is all i will ever need. although I do like those 13x3 piccolo snares from pearl (brass) and ludwig (bronze). cheers
This one and the Legend Phosphorus bronze piccolo are my all time best piccolos ever made. And also the Sonor Signature, but you can’t find that one lol
This just further underscores how musical brass is as a material. Wether it’s a saxophone, trumpet, snare drum 🥁....... brass is a great 👍 material for 🎶
james mccarthy I think this was also the one David Garibaldi used for a long time before he got his own signature model...I think he modeled his Yamaha signature drum after this.
Hello guys, hope all is well Thank you for the video I have the same snare, but the hoops in bad conditions. You sale that hoops,or you recommend me another brand. Thanks Rafael Ferrer Levy

Holy moly this sounds incredible
Every one of those tunings sounded perfect, I can’t believe how good that shallow depth sounds..

yes indeed! i don't understand this current trend of deep snares
It's incredible how much range that piccolo snare has. At low, it nearly had the depth of a 6.5"X14". I see now why so many drummers have had a piccolo as their go-to drum.
Whew, that high tuning? All day

This sounds exactly like the snare Vinnie used at the Buddy Rich memorial with Dave Weckl and Steve Gadd. Amazing

I'd love to see you play bro
I had one of these years ago and I loved it. Wish I kept it but I needed rent.
I had one of these - why I sold it, I'll never know. IMO one of the best brass snare drums ever made. When mic'd up it could take the top of your head off. It cut through at any volume.
same here...one of the best
I bought this drum in '89 and still have it. It sounds amazing still. At low tuning it has a throaty sound but smooth all the same..
GREAT video!!! This guys knows how to do a drum demo! He showed all three tuning ranges, had a new head on it and played extremely well! Thanks for sharing this.
ピッコロスネアのHIGH TUNING最高です!
piccolos were my fave snare in the 90s even tuned down they were dope
Never had an opportunity to play this!
Will these cut through well in a live situation?
I Kinda like the way the snare sounds.
@@geoffreyred hell yes it will cut like a knife
I had one of those - it was incredible. I only got rid of it because the throw off wouldn't stay tight. The 496 (6.5 deep) is also incredible.
The low and high tunings sound incredible
The one snare to rule them all. Incredible!
My fav snare! Ever! I love mine! Also, credit to the awesome drummer! 🥁
1. The snare sounds incredible 2. Its all in the head configurations and tuning

Great job with the video! Keep them coming! Memphis drum shop is of the chain!!
Didn’t expect to like the sound of this drum this much
the best snare sound in entire youtube
You guys do some of the best demos! I can feel the force of this classic Yamaha snare drum. You captured its crack and tone so well.
Used to play one of these babies in high school. Amazing snare drum!
Used to have one of these. Undeniable sound. It's amazing. Whoever buys this is a lucky drummer.
I second that!
Jesus Christ this guy can play too. Wow. Great drumming

I found one of these in NY for $150 in that condition...obvious it was a no brainer
managed to find one of these new old stock. best purchase of my life. between this and my supra, that is all i will ever need. although I do like those 13x3 piccolo snares from pearl (brass) and ludwig (bronze). cheers

This one and the Legend Phosphorus bronze piccolo are my all time best piccolos ever made. And also the Sonor Signature, but you can’t find that one lol
Beautiful on high tuning.
David G's snare in rough-in trim. Not that it matters now, it's sold.
So much pop. Beautiful
How do you guys record those snares? They always sound INCREDIBLE!! 🤘🤘🤘
UNA BELLEZA DE TAMBOR!!!
COMO EL QUE USABA DAVE WECKL CON LA ELECTRIC BAND!!!
This sound a tiny bit bigger than it really is and I like that 😃
Sounds good all the way around.
Great snare!
Great sound and playing!
Excellent demonstration, my compliments
😎👌🏼
That last groove got my face melting 🔥
I love the bass drum sound!!!
It sounds incredible for something Dave Weckl and Vinnie Colaiuta use it
call me crazy, but I like those low and medium tunings more than the high one.
This is actually very good
Sounds great!
High tuning sounds the best
Elliot Hoffman of Car Bomb has one of these
This just further underscores how musical brass is as a material. Wether it’s a saxophone, trumpet, snare drum 🥁....... brass is a great 👍 material for 🎶
Just not for cymbals lmao. Brass cymbals are the worst
This snare is so delicious
Just bought a SD493. Can’t wait to try it in the studio. High hopes for this one 🤌🏻
