You have to love all of the bullshit regulations that have no effect on the firearm. Well, a vertical grip is illegal if the firearm is too short; it makes it much more lethal than not having a vertical grip...
I shoot mine without a grip all the time and I'm just as effective without it. The grip just makes it more comfortable but does not change my accuracy in any way.
My guess is the guys that make the laws were thinking that having a vert grip on a small gun would make it much easier to control it especially if you were to convert to full auto. I dont personally think this, this is just what I think their minds might've been going through
As a kid I liked the idea of forward angled VFGs because I thought you could grip them and hold the muzzle down and shoot laser-like bullet patterns. A little unrealistic, and now that I'm older, I've found out about that wobble and instability with a pistol grip and grabbing a VFG. So, my favorite is a short forward angled VFG grabbed like you have, tied with an AFG. AFG on a pump shotgun, FAVFG on anything else. Full length VFG on certain things for the same reasons you stated.
As usual, very informative and an absolute pleasure to watch. Great work. All of this knowledge comes from trial and error and simply having passion for what you do. Again, great job!!
Good video dude. You covered all the essentials, broke down different styles of holding the rifle, and overall great production. I honestly don't like too many videos, I like keeping my 'liked video' stream clean with things I'll keep watching, but I'll give this one a like. Keep it up man!
the ATF doesnt like long and short things combined in one package. aggressive appearing objects are too scawy, especially when black in color. fast movements spook them. things that are quiet and dont damage hearing are entirely too suspicious.
Angled grips work very well with standard GI m4's you can mount it further out to make it stick beyond the rail so it ends roughly on the same level with the bayonet lug. It helps to extend the grip which really helps to mitigate the shortness of standard handguard.
1:52 and they just recently (april or may 2019) released a statement that the measurement is from the end of the buffer tube to the end of the barrel or muzzle attachment if it is permanently affixed. NOT from the end of the fully extended "brace" as previously thought.

I personally use the Magpul RVG or EVG, which is their standard vertical grip. I like having a thumb over bore type of grip when using it, which gives good control when shifting the gun from left to right.
After watching this video I didn’t even know that the ATF had or has laws on what for grips you can put on certain guns thank you so much man I appreciate it.
Lucas Botkin you’re awesome and I love your videos, this comment probably means nothing since I’m pretty much a nobody but I still feel inclined to leave this comment, you’re my hero
no doubt, i just found these vids n this guy has exceptional taste in setting up rifles. everything makes sense and whats crazy is the guy is really young, i cant imagine all the bad ass stuff he will have in 10yrs.
Iam so jealous, this guy is so loaded! I just finally can afford my very first AR15, The Cheapest Deal IMO. Riffle, 3 mags, a box ammo (250rds), fullsize dual compartment riffle backpack, then a dual color (red or green cabellas brand) dot 2x magnification (i think) for less than 850ish
The ATF classified a vertical forgrip as both being in front of the mag well and 90 degrees of the bore, so if the forgrip is angled forward or backwards and not 90 degrees per their language that technically makes it a angled forgrip
Ok this is now one of my favorite gun videos. Your break downs and respecting the advantages and disadvantages of them. Stressing preference to some people is good and is for me also. Anyway thanks man. I found that Magpul AFG for me on rifles (more AR15 and AK) however AR10 I am a traditional Vert Grip preference. On shotguns (S12 MKA etc) I vastly prefer VFG big and Chonky. The recoil of an semiautomatic shotgun is very vertical I find (these auto's actions carry a lot of recoil energy and are heavy) I also have LOP preferences for ranged, mid, CQ, moving, stationary, etc
Probably one of the best foregrip vids out here! Ergonomics specialists say that humans shoot their best in natural body positions. In handling a rifle, I have noticed that if you take a boxer's stance, right fist toward your right jaw-line, and left fist extended out in front, and look at the angles through the central axis of each wrist, I think you can see why the Russians angled the AK grip forward. However, no one runs the grip angled 30 to 45 deg to the left at its base, which also puts the buttstock better angled into the shoulder by 10 degrees. Some would say you have to rotate your optics 10 deg to the right, clockwise, so they are vertical on cheekweld. I find this setup incredibly more accurate, tight in my shoulder and less fatiguing, as I am no longer trying to keep the weapon vertical, but rotating it 10 degrees counterclockwise. I would be curious as to your take on this, if you try it.... think sten gun posture, mag hold slightly rotated counterclockwise! Great videos! I learn so much from you! Thank you🙏
I think angled forward grips are the best. Less obtrusive, lets you get a good platform to firmly hold. More options and can be used on any platform pistol or rifle. Definitely helps for the compact factor with sling. Sleeker looking to
I can be for sure to say that I think the best was the SHIFT short angled grip (Mlok) by Fortis MFG. I ran that forever until I now have a grenade launcher attached. But it’s minimal it’s lightweight it’s aluminum and I love that you can dig your pinky into it and kind of pull it back a little into your shoulder I always had nice clean shot groups because of that. And I’m all about going the light weight direction because I was in the Marine Corps and all I did was carry heavy bulky uncomfortable gear and heavy weapons (mostly the m249) so nowadays everything I’ve built needs to be lightweight and consist of quality
Speaking from experience fighting 3 tours in Iraq with the "Eighty Deuce" 504th PIR, I was issued a forward grip for my M4 and it worked well for me on the endless several kilometers long dismounted patrols, missions, raids, and firefights. Never came lose nor broke. We always carried our rifles at the low ready, unlike the lesser divisions with the exception of SPEC OPSs who preferred high ready, and with an ACOG, AN/PEQ15, Surefire light, and 30 rounds of 5.56mm to compliment the other 75+ pounds of gear in our assault pack, body armor, ACH, and liquid hydration in extreme heat that could reach upwards on 130+in August, every pound counts. Paratroopers always tie everything down on the weapons and equipment with 550 cord AKA parachute cord for you NAPS, Non Airborne personal, because losing an item on your packing list or God forbid any sensitive item would bring down a world of hurt whose creativity could only come from a battle hardened. I once say our Brigade XO, "Major Dumbass" forget to tie down his M9 pistol during a JFEX and after 5000+ Paratroopers, and all the heavy drops were completed in preparation for a week long training op at Sicily DZ, Fort Bragg the end result was all the follow-up training and missions after the jump had to be scrubbed while we spent the next 4 days combing the largest DZ on Bragg looking for that weapon. On the bright side the 82nd has nearly a black check for all mission and training ops but the cost for an operation that large can reach 7 figures. Just to turn on the engines for a Black Hawk jump which is a squad operation cost the military $25,000 in fuel. For example. A JFEX can have upwards to 15 C-17's complimented by another dozen or more C-130's and those aircraft are infinitely thirstier for that JP8 then a Black Hawk. The 82nd trains how they fight so hundreds of thousands of live rounds for 56mm, 7.72, 5,56, and mortar add to the cost. I left the 82nd in 2010 right before I retired in 2013 to teach at Fort SAm for the Medic school so I don't know what has changed since then but Even during the lean budget years of Clinton and Obama we always had the newest and most modern equipment. During OIF/OEF the Pentagon authorized GWOT funds for the Division which really was a blank check. I'm sure other units had the same accommodations but not all supply NCO's are created equal and I met a few outside of the Division who wouldn't know the NCO creed if it was staled to their hands.2nd paragraph 1st line "Competence is my watch-word. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind - accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers." As a Soldier in the 82nd our leaders always led from the front. Never stepping back when Soldiers were needed up front no matter how mundane or dangerous the task. As a leader in the 82nd the wellbeing of my soldiers was hardwired into my Soul and even though I had served as a member of 6 other units during my time in the service combined it was still less than half the total number of years that I spent in the 504th. The 504th was where I started and grew up as a Soldier, and if I hadn't been selected by DA to leave and go teach my last few years I would have ended my career on a high note. 800 feet to be exact before exiting an aircraft. I made my first jump at FT Benning Airborne School in Nov 1991 from a C-130 and T-10C parachute over Fryer DZ age 19, and my final jump at Fort Bragg in Nov 2010 from a C-130 and T-10D parachute over Holland DZ at the age of 38. If you care to see not that jump but one before it I posted on my page.

i recently put a magpul stock on my ar. i also bought a magpul m lok handguard. i have a 20 inch barrel on my rifle. i later bought the magpul handstop. i was watching some jerry miculek videos on the best way to shoot any rifle. controlling the front of the barrel is very important. also using the sling to support the recoil is another good thing to do. keep your eye on the front sight at all times. i bought the hand stop because i can rest the hand guard anywhere. the other ones are too long and i can keep the barrel from sticking out too far if i am in a combat situation. your video is one of the best i have seen in a while. there are a lot of guys who think they are ar 15 experts just because they bought one.

Technically with an AR pistol you CAN run the BCM "vertical" grips, as they are slightly angled. The definition of "vertical grip" by law is that it is 90 degrees to the rifle, which the BCM ones are not. Whether you want to rely on that as an ironclad defense is up to you though.
Thanks so much for the no-nonsense informative style. Just ordered my first rifle (Ruger 556 18" MPR) so over the last few days I've watched hundreds of videos on add-ons and advice. That last compilation shot was wet.
First video I've seen on this channel. What a well-spoken informative young fella! And dang, what a lot of rifles!
Watched it many times, that slowmo sequence of flat fire shooting using many of his rifles is just awesome!
This video was a big help in choosing a foregrip for my LMT.
Went with a short BCM "angled forward AK style" and love it.
The BCM foregrip is very reasonably priced too!
Going through these comments is absolutely hilarious. How many jealous little boys can comment on a post? Lucas is obviously a go getter. He makes great products, puts out good content on UA-cam and IG. All of you dudes commenting negatively on his gear sound like envious little girls. Keep up the good work, bro. Great content across your channel.
+usmcrob8585 thanks! It's funny and sad at the same time. :(
No mine is probability two hands niggas busting rounds at u 30 guns ain't shit if u ain't got 30 niggas besides I'm not jealous just saying when encountered by a force of rather have a solid weapon and side arm with shit load of ammo and reliable weapon kinda how operaters go in to situations instead of video game tactics 50 guns and moving from point b to c to change positions use other guns means getting pinned down. I'm from the hood our engagements are at 10 to 50 yards urban I'm working on distance but cold with close quarters you better be in the hood target aqusion and follow up as well as flank and using hill's as cover while moving to a better position if no barriers are there so when I see a white boy strapped down but never in a situation where he really could have used his hands but doesn't so he grapples right no get hit with a blade just saying coming from people who actually use them a d seeing you white boys playing tough but when it comes down to it your heart lies in a Calvary niggas ain't never had one always fought the meanest fights for a chance at peace and life I don't hate u I hate the fact u act as if this country never made your enemies for u and u never seem to have the eye to view it when shtf there coming after all u white boys with an arsenal why becuase you can arm people and your a large number plus they sold y'all out to every race on the planet to have the world as a brothel then allowed all those enemies cousins to have citizenship they will not side with u only say this so u wake up becuase every shit situation u white boys get some how niggas end up fighting it too.

You have to love all of the bullshit regulations that have no effect on the firearm. Well, a vertical grip is illegal if the firearm is too short; it makes it much more lethal than not having a vertical grip...
Because criminals will follow the law
I shoot mine without a grip all the time and I'm just as effective without it. The grip just makes it more comfortable but does not change my accuracy in any way.
My guess is the guys that make the laws were thinking that having a vert grip on a small gun would make it much easier to control it especially if you were to convert to full auto. I dont personally think this, this is just what I think their minds might've been going through
unless an atf angent is next to you at the range nobodys gonna know
As a kid I liked the idea of forward angled VFGs because I thought you could grip them and hold the muzzle down and shoot laser-like bullet patterns.
I like forward angel grip so i can rest my hand on it
I dont like vertical grip
As usual, very informative and an absolute pleasure to watch. Great work.
All of this knowledge comes from trial and error and simply having passion for what you do. Again, great job!!
Good video dude. You covered all the essentials, broke down different styles of holding the rifle, and overall great production. I honestly don't like too many videos, I like keeping my 'liked video' stream clean with things I'll keep watching, but I'll give this one a like. Keep it up man!
why the fuck are there laws restricting the usage of grips? does that really make a gun any more dangerous?
looking for logic in the ATF regs is a futile task
they don't want us to have a firm grab on our guns to make it easier to take by force lol
Zealot Patriot "30 bullets per second clip!"
the ATF doesnt like long and short things combined in one package. aggressive appearing objects are too scawy, especially when black in color. fast movements spook them. things that are quiet and dont damage hearing are entirely too suspicious.
+brandon b true true
4:45 and heat...it helps in a heavy gunfight, you can hold the handle
Quality of image, editing and knowledge. This is absolutely perfection depicted in a video. Love it
Angled grips work very well with standard GI m4's you can mount it further out to make it stick beyond the rail so it ends roughly on the same level with the bayonet lug. It helps to extend the grip which really helps to mitigate the shortness of standard handguard.
That recoil management is INSANE! Very impressive.
man, this is the best youtube channel I've ever stumbled upon
The editing and quality of the video itself is really nice man
1:52 and they just recently (april or may 2019) released a statement that the measurement is from the end of the buffer tube to the end of the barrel or muzzle attachment if it is permanently affixed.
NOT from the end of the fully extended "brace" as previously thought.
Before I watch this I will say hand stops are my favorite all the way out front on a full length rail on a 16-18 inch barrel length AR.
wow for a young guy you really know your shit. I'm impressed.

So you are saying if you have no stock and a barrel length of 13" with an overall length of 26" plus you can have a vertical foregrip?
it's the hair and dubstep.....
no doubt, i just found these vids n this guy has exceptional taste in setting up rifles. everything makes sense and whats crazy is the guy is really young, i cant imagine all the bad ass stuff he will have in 10yrs.
Well ur lucky i am too poor to buy an eotech with my savings
Moon Draw Time to build one! You can buy one part at a time!
Nice array of products; it's cool to see them on a variety of different builds. Anyone else notice the high pitched ringing throughout the video?
The ATF classified a vertical forgrip as both being in front of the mag well and 90 degrees of the bore, so if the forgrip is angled forward or backwards and not 90 degrees per their language that technically makes it a angled forgrip
i put a magpul hand stop on my ar. i also make use of a sling. a lot of people do not use the sling as a means to hold the rifle steady.
You have a lot of crazy attatchments bruh. Well, I'm still satisfied with my Dad's AKM with a bayonet. A classic.
rifle is fine
Ok this is now one of my favorite gun videos. Your break downs and respecting the advantages and disadvantages of them. Stressing preference to some people is good and is for me also. Anyway thanks man.
I found that Magpul AFG for me on rifles (more AR15 and AK) however AR10 I am a traditional Vert Grip preference. On shotguns (S12 MKA etc) I vastly prefer VFG big and Chonky. The recoil of an semiautomatic shotgun is very vertical I find (these auto's actions carry a lot of recoil energy and are heavy)
I also have LOP preferences for ranged, mid, CQ, moving, stationary, etc
Sleeker looking to
I'm getting into carbines myself and watching your vids is always so entertaining yet informative. Keep it up man! #lovefromitaly
I just bought a Fortis Shift. I wanted a fde/black scheme that wasn’t too big or heavy. I liked the Daniel Defense, but it’s pretty large. The Fortis is pretty tiny, but it’s perfect and the black is inlaid with carbon fiber. It’s gonna look great.

A light trigger and knowing where it breaks and resets makes a huge difference. He has great setups and you can tell he trains often. The shots sound faster because of the reverb on the video, but it's still fast. I've had people ask if I have a happy switch on a couple of my ARs I've done trigger work on..

i recently put a magpul stock on my ar. i also bought a magpul m lok handguard. i have a 20 inch barrel on my rifle. i later bought the magpul handstop. i was watching some jerry miculek videos on the best way to shoot any rifle. controlling the front of the barrel is very important. also using the sling to support the recoil is another good thing to do. keep your eye on the front sight at all times. i bought the hand stop because i can rest the hand guard anywhere. the other ones are too long and i can keep the barrel from sticking out too far if i am in a combat situation. your video is one of the best i have seen in a while. there are a lot of guys who think they are ar 15 experts just because they bought one.

The answer is whichever one works best for you, and you made that point clearly and concisely. High quality content as always!
Technically with an AR pistol you CAN run the BCM "vertical" grips, as they are slightly angled. The definition of "vertical grip" by law is that it is 90 degrees to the rifle, which the BCM ones are not. Whether you want to rely on that as an ironclad defense is up to you though.
I was about to post this.. By law is says "90 degree angle".. exactly what you said...But they make "laws" hard to understand on purpose..

Great, informative video. Something I noticed in your end montage was that the magazines of most of your rifles was shaking with each shot. It's just something that stood out to me because you don't see that in games or movies, much, if at all.
That is a sweet selection in the back of that truck. Only thing is that's going to be one hell of a tough decision if you have to bug out, instead of shelter in place, as to which one or two you take with you and all the rest that get left behind for the looters.
