Quick Tip: How To Mount M-LOK Accessories
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- We often hear a lot about how great the M-LOK® system is for mounting accessories on AR-15 handguards. But HOW do you do it? How exactly do you use M-LOK's cammed T-nut fasteners to install those accessories? Sit back because Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant is going to show us exactly how it works by installing a Picatinny rail segment on his AR-15's M-LOK handguard. And installing ANY M-LOK accessory works pretty much the same way. The M-LOK system eliminates the M1913 Picatinny railed handguard's bulk, weight, and tendency to remove skin from your hand. (To get a full comparison of M-LOK to Picatinny and KeyMod, search for our Smyth Busters video, "M-LOK vs. KeyMod - Which is Better?") With M-LOK a pair of screws go through the accessory into little T-nut mounting plates that slip through slots in the handguard. As you tighten the screws, the plates rotate 90 degrees so they can't slip back out through the slot, and they lock down solid as you tighten the screws more. It's easier done than said! Removing the M-LOK accessory is even EASIER. Oh, now you want to put it back on? Reinstalling is almost as easy. Bonus benefit: M-LOK's excellent return-to-zero capability.
The M-LOK® system was originally developed by Magpul, who licenses it to other manufacturers free of charge, as long as those manufacturers ensure their products meet the M-LOK specs and display the M-LOK® logo on their products.
Super helpful video. Thank you for not "ASSUMING" everybody knows. Many of us are starting from square one. That makes your video extremely valuable to us newbies.
It's a how to video after all.
@@riiddisbuk2496 True, but often times the creators that make these videos are snobby and condescending.
I wouldn't imagine you being wrong about that. However, I hardly if not ever ran into one :P@@ggmanatee
Yes Exactly 💯 us newbies have to start somewhere ! HUUGE help ... looks obvious but Suuper Helpful to see it 1st Hand !!
What he said . Much appreciated
It’s great to see how I’ve been doing it wrong all these years
Too real. I was fortunate to have a friend set me straight at the time but who boy was I soo wrong in my initial application
Me too…
M-Lok is garbage. Anything that is supposed to be "soldier proof" but requires this much fiddling around is terrible by design. I'll stick with Pic rails and keymod.
@@mmclaurin8035 I’d prefer Quad Rail myself
@@mmclaurin8035 Apparently not if the military has been been implementing this more over time
It's simple videos like this that a lot of people don't know how and are afraid to ask. I was showing a guy at a gun store how to mount a red dot that has a qd mount and it created an audience of people who simply did not know. Great video
Frustration, sore fingers, ready to draw up and 3d print a tool. My wife tells me to just look up instructions on how-to. Why is she so much smarter? Grateful.
Smh u can't think for yourself it took her to tell
You know sometimes women are just great thinkers. I go through that with my wife lol.
I'm buying an M&P 15 spot II and I had no clue what the hell I was looking at when I saw the handguard. It has a standard picatinny rail for the optics on top but M-Lok on the hand guard. The last M&P was a quad picatinny rail all around the handguard so this is something new to me. Thank you for the concise, well put together and informative video. Super helpful thank you so much Mr. Caleb Savant.
Another great tutorial. Correct, direct and simplified. Helping the shooting world one part at a time. Thanks
When I bought my DDM4V7 - I asked the Dealer about this and he didn't have a clue. He told me I would need to take OFF the hand guard! I did not think so - that sounded a bit much. Thank you so very much for another clear and direct explanation ;-)
That's the unfortunate side of the industry, sometimes someone who doesn't know anything about guns gets placed behind the counter, for whatever reason. A few months back, I walked into a gun store where a young man was working the counter, and I asked him a question regarding "bullpup rifles". As I realized soon after his bizarre answer that he had no idea what a bullpup rifle was, I kindly pointed to a bullpup rifle, and explained to him that it's a design where the magazine of the weapon gets placed behind the trigger.
Hey! I'm here trying to get the forward grip off my DDM4!
I'm pretty sure they stripped the damn screws at this point though, so I'm kind of at a loss. Lol
@@aaron4102 Q-tip stick (cut off the cottony head) and a wee bit of superglue on the end. CAREFULLY into the screw hole. Do NOT glue the stick TO the accessories base! {wink} If you DO glue it inside -- careful application of water will/may soften the cardboard of the stick and a bit of acetone will clear the super glue...
i had no idea it was that simple. i did it the hardest way possible. i removed the handguard and held those t-nuts with my finger while i tightened the screws in. thx to this video i will never do that again.
Just bought my first AR15 this weekend and was super confused on how I would be able to Mount anything onto the underside of that barrel cover. Thank you so much for your video, def cleared it up!
I love this guy! Steve and Caleb are basically the reason I'm subscribed to this channel.
One important step was left out! When positioning the mount keep it flush with the handguard (which you pointed out) but also keep a bit of forward pressure (towards the muzzle) on the mount. If not, you can find it to not be as stable.
I watched you do exactly that (put forward pressure on the mount), but you (possibly because you have done it 1,000 times!) did not mention it. It's also an important principle when mounting a scope.
I know that YOU know, but newbies might not.
Good point! I did it out of habit but completely forgot to mention it! That's how you know none of this is scripted lol
And of course this so it will place the mount tight against the front of the slot which will prevent recoil loads from being carried by the clamping and instead bear on the wall of the slot.
Thank you!
@@CalebSavant thanks!
What fool would mount an optic on an Mlok?
What Panzi would choose an Mlok over quad?
Its a good idea to look in between the barrel and handguard to make sure the screws dont hit the barrel. I had to file the screws a bit shorter to make them clear the barrel on my rock river arms ar
That's related to one of my biggest gripes with BCM. They don't give the right size screws for their own handguard and accessories. I discovered that a whole section of MLOK space on my BCM couldn't be used by my BCM hand stops because the screws would touch the gas block.
This is a perfect video. No padding with unnecessary steps. Right to the point and super helpful. Thank you good sir.
caleb looking like a straight customs chad with that flannel on. give this man a mutant and a slick!

I've used 11913 rails for years, but now need an M-LOK. Your vid is excellent! Thanks loads and KUDOS to Brownells!
Just watched a different video, and while it got the job done, it was a little more clumsy than this one. Great tips and great job! Now I can put my M-LOK system to work!
I really appreciate
I started putting my accessories on last night and the whole time I was thinking that I missed the picatinny rail. I knew there had to be a trick to it and that I was doing something wrong. This make perfect sense.
Awesome video Caleb, I could not find how to actually do this anywhere. Thanks so much!!
This was way more helpful than I anticipated. Brownells is awesome. Thanks!
Wow, so glad I watched this. Here I was thinking both that I was an idiot and that MLOK was garbage... because I was taking pliers, removing the handguard, and feeding the screw through the guard while trying to catch the beveled nut on the back. It usually took me FOREVER with sweaty hands to do. Relieved to know the proper way now and that the nut self adjusts into the correct position. Thanks!
Thank you. Just bought a rifle and when I got home did not know how I was going to attach anything being new to the M-lok. Great video!
Took me mounting a few VGs and a light to learn that you have to adjust the space between the head of the bolt and mounting backing plate to just larger than the thickness of your hand guard in order for it to tighten down properly. Next came getting the plates to be parallel, which isn’t a necessity it just looks better upon close scrutiny (by me lol) 🤷♂️
This was a life saver for me. Glad you posted this.
I just became acquainted with the M-Lok system. Thanks for a clear and concise tutorial on how to install and remove them. Very helpful indeed!
I am just getting ready to "build" my first AR (pistol) and while I've been familiar with the Weaver/ Picatinny style attachments for decades, the M-Loc stuff is new to me.. seems simple enough, great explanation ;)
After like four other videos, this one was the one that actually helped 💯💯
Just bought a rail that will arrive today. You guys read my mind. Thanks again from Brazil.
Best video I've seen on how to mount m-lok attachments. Great job.
Great tutorial. I haven’t been able to figure out MLOK for like 6 months😂
I have only used Piccanty rails up to this point. Got an MLOK handgaurd recently. Now I know how to add accessories to it. thanks. But in future videos, near the end of this one, you said "The back plates are in position" etc. but the camera did not zoom in to show it, it was on you. I would show the detail for those whom may not understand. I am a seasoned gun owner, and very mechanically inclined, I get it, and totally understand, but newbies may not.
I already know how to do this but when Caleb explains it, I always feel like I've learned something new! Thank you and God Bless brother!!! 🇺🇲🙏🇺🇦

Saw a captured M16 in the hands of a russian spetsnaz that had an M Lok, he took it from a Ukrainian army

Did yall notice Caleb installed a Metal PicRail section on a metal handguard? Thats the way.
Everyone loves this video.
I saw one attachment (by kinetic industries) that was spring loaded and designed to go behind the solid portion of the m-lok rail. Squeeze the end button, insert into the m-lok slot and release… quick and easy!
The only issue I can see with a spring loaded design is that the spring may wear down with time as it takes a thrashing from the recoil, which in theory, can loosen the accessory off the hand guard.
Brownells is so cool. Anytime I need to know how to do something I just come here and they usually have a video. If they don't I email them and someone answers quickly and tells me what I need to do. They are the best.
I'm happy to have found this. I was a little confused. I was thinking that I needed to remove the hand rail. In fact, that's what my search was for. Thanks!
Thanks brother. I wasn’t screwing it in all the way before installing, that helped!
Excellent how-to video, Caleb; thank you!!!
If only it were that easy to get the nuts to the right point at first. I've had issues with MLOK for years where the nuts routinely tighten down just fine but end up being parallel to the opening in the rail instead of secure and perpendicular.
Very helpful, I was driving myself crazy last night. We appreciate it man.
Whenever I mount anything molk, I have to hold the flat pice with a wrench and tighten them up enough so they will catch then they will hold themselves to tighten.
Nice clean video and info thanks man! Only thing I would suggest with most any M Lok accessory do NOT over tighten once they are turned and snug you can stop, you don't want to strip em'!
Thank you! I found M-Lok a pain in the ass to put on and take off.
That's crazy lol, I was looking through your old videos to learn about mlok last night lol
Great video my friend. I've never seen that done before and needed to know how to put a forward vertical hand grip on the bottom M-Lok hand guard surrounding the barrel on my new AR-15. Now I know exactly how to do it. Thanks again!
Appriciate the tips,I didnt want to scratch anything up. The fully tightening it first portion helped a ton. The manual it comes with kinda left me more confused then certain.
Just ordered an upper with mlok handguards. Until I watched your video I had no idea what they were. Thanks and great vid.
Thank you for this, awesome explanation for a first-time shotgun MLock owner.
Holy hell this just helped me mount a rail for a PC charger. Thank you so much. Next up light mount kit.
This is exactly what I was looking for and so helpful, thank you!
Finally a video on how to do it right without taking the weapon apart. Thanks!
Thank you, all other videos were complicated and required to buy M-LOCK accessories mount part!
I've never used Mlok until now, I always wondered how the hell these were supposed to work, once you mentioned the bevel, I looked at mine and now I realise how it works, you saved me quite the headache!
Thank you sir. I bought a Rossi lever action that said it was m lok. I had no idea what it meant. Now I do. I’m use to rails. Thanks again.
Thank you I just installed my magpul qd sling attachment perfectly on my B&T because of this video
This answers so many questions I had. Thank you!
Never knew you could do this without cussing 🤬 😂
That's the fun part though 😂
Sheesh they should’ve put that in the instructions who would’ve thought to put the nut on outside the hand guard
Well I learned something. Thank you. I didn’t know I was supposed to tighten it up first.
An absolutely great informative video sir!
Simple and straightforward. Thank you
I just bought a "Green Laser Gun Sight Beam Rifle Compact Tactical Low Profile M-Lok Rail Mount" off eBay for around $55.00 Your video showed me just what I was looking for to mount this when it arrives. It is a low profile Laser Sight about 3" long and M-Lok - should be nice for quick-hip type shots at a target or at a "bad guy" (:
Many times when installing these, I find that the nut just turns with the screw and doesn't catch. I used to try putting a screwdriver or pliers or something inside the handguard to hold the nut in place, but I discovered a much easier way. I just pull the rail piece (or whatever I'm mounting) toward me to create resistance against the inside of the handguard, then turn the screw until it tightens. So much easier.
Extremely useful for mounting a QD sling mount. Thanks
Great video & great concept.
Why have 16" of pic rail if you only need 3"-4"....
Can’t say that I learned anything, BUT I absolutely enjoyed the presentation. Thanks.
That's another great shirt, Caleb. Fresh.
Best video on subject matter
Notice he doesn’t torque it too much. I just ruined a couple slots on an IWI Zion because the locking t-nut sunk into the rail like butter and left grooves and burrs in the metal. Not sure if IWI’s aluminum is soft, the BCM grip had defective t-nuts, I overly tightened or some combination of the 3. Never had issues with MLok before, not even on the Zion.
Rocking that Brrownells Special Edition Dixxon Flannel!
Love this channel. 👍
MLok is the way to go. So simple and effective. If you like lightweight handguards like the Magpul MOE, this is the solution to mounting your accessories.
Video saved me. I felt like a moron not knowing how to install my qd mount.
Great video. Made it easy for me. Much appreciated.
THANK YOU! Just what I was looking for Keep up good work !
Let me add my thanks....this is one of those things that long time AR owners think is intuitive....as a new AR owner I was mystified how to mount things.
First time mounting m-lock big help thanks
Nice Pendleton.
Thank you! I feel better before I order my accessories!
Thanks! I'm new to ARs and I had no idea.
Whoa! What will they think of next?
For me, when i tried following these instructions, the inside pieces just kept spinning in air. I had to ignore the advice to push everything flush with the handrail and, instead, pull the mount partially back out so the inner pieces could actually catch on the handrail and keep from spinning. Only then did it tighten up.
But at least this video got me started in the right direction so I could figure it the rest. I wasn't sure how to do it before watching this.
Umm, I just looked and I'm confused as to why is it Brownells only has 279K subs? Very weird. Anyway, great tutorial and video as always. Everybody has to learn. I just taught another guy at the gun shop this yesterday! I'd say it was the algorithm listening for recommendations but this is a brand new video. Lol. 🐍🇺🇸
Very well explained tutorial thanks!
Daaaamn !!!
Robbie Rotten does Airsoft..
great vid !
Man brother you just made life way easier haha
I couldn't feel it but finally got it. ty.
One of the smartest marketing decisions MAGPUL ever made, was making M-LOK open source.
Can you do a comparison between MOE and M-LOK? I know it’s kinda dumb, but I’ve had friends get a bunch of MOE rails and get frustrated with the incompatibility
they have no compatibility, theyre totally different
@@farklestaxbaum4945 I know, but sometimes people (my friends), need a demonstration, 😂
My bullpup has the handguard come off with the pull of a pin and the top of it is open so I was able to just reach in and hold while I screwed M-Lok accessories on. My AR-style rifle does not have the top open. I got everything on nice and tight, but it was such a challenge figuring it out. I should have looked for this video! Now I know though!
Thank you 🙏🏽
Thanks for doing this video! I've cussed these things for years but now I know how to do it right!
Real talk, why did Magpul normalize having to pull on the device in order to tighten them...
When they could just cut out rotation altogether and use the walls of the hole to keep a screw in place, and slide the attachment back until the wing of the locking nut hooks on the wall.
Magpul already normalized putting little ovals on the attachment to make sure everything is aligned properly; why didn't they also go for the far simpler option?
Great video n perfect timing for me I figured that's exactly how they Function but having a PRO confirm it ALWAYS provides Confidence.. thx Stay Safe n God Bless - Continued Success 😎
I felt pretty helpless until I watched this! Thanks!
These videos are awesome, thank you!
I’ve always wanted to see a quad rail built from an MLok.
Great tutorial, Caleb! Thank you!
I wish I had seen this video a couple years ago when I added 45 degree BUIS to two of my AR's.
Thanks a bunch! Very nice & clear presentation
Love all your videos ❤❤❤
I’m glad he found an easy way the first time I used mlok system was the other day I just got a s&w m&p sport 3 and it comes with a free float mlok hand fairs I went to academy to get some magpul furniture and I bought a fore grip as well the way I done it was I got those nuts started and I then pulled on my fore grip downwards until the nuts where locked in and I tightened them down This system is very irritating to use
Is there a torque spec for M-LoK?
