I only grew up with American Girl magazine and the self-help books they made. I didn't really know about the dolls, and my parents couldn't have afforded them anyway. I am getting a kick out of all of the fantastic AG related videos popping up on this site in the last few years, and yours is definitely included in that. I think it's really sweet the way you tied everything in with the fact that you have a daughter to raise. I'm sure having a kid really sparked some thoughts in your head about what you grew up with.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes, this site has opened my eyes to a very creative and lovely community of AG themed collectors and creators. It's brought me a lot of joy to revisit. Thanks so much for commenting and for watching. And yes, having a child definitely makes me reflect back! ❤️
That’s really kind. This video is probably my favorite one I’ve made so far, and I’m hoping someday it can still take off - at least to the point that it can generate some conversation. I’d love to know what women my age think of the ideas here. But, either way, we’ve got more content coming soon!
As a woman who grew up in the early 2000's and specifically remembers 9/11 (It was my first memory, I was 4 and remember watching the towers fall on TV in my mom's bedroom and crying because she was and I had no idea of what to do so I cried along side her), and I ended up with my first American Girl Doll the following Christmas (I got two that day, my parents got me Kit and my grandfather bought me Kailey. I ended up collecting them until I was 21, and got 8 in total. I grew up terminally ill and everyone who knew me knew that if they wanted to spend the money, I'd adore the dolls forever) This checks out, I never thought about why I was so into them, but everything you brought up makes complete sense to me in a subconcious way.
That is so nice of you to say, and I really appreciate that you enjoyed and subscribed! I’m learning more and more about UA-cam each day and hoping the audience will build with time - your kind words make me feel more optimistic! Thanks for watching and hope you will stay tuned for more!
What a beautifully made video.. As an American born- Latina female.. American Girl made me feel more connected to the culture around me. Accepting the American Born Girl in me and loving this country. You also reminded me to brush my American Girl Dolls hair and catch up with them about my life 🤣🩷
I’m so glad you enjoyed and really appreciate you sharing! 🙏 I love hearing about what American Girl means to others out there - thank you. And yes, something about brushing their hair and chatting them up can be pretty cathartic 🥰 Thanks for being here!
the lil box is like a little time capsule. I never really cared for my American Doll. My mom bought it for me because it was just the popular toy at the time. I wasn't aware of how expensive it was so I treated it like a cheap Barbie doll. My best friend loved hers tho. She had two and would frequent the store to go to the restaurant and have their hair done. While my dolls hair was done by kids at summer camp where they were so rough it was a common occurrence for the head to just pop off
@@absentdreamer Hi again 🥰 Thanks for sharing your perspective! It’s so crazy how serious this all felt to me back then when they really were just toys with poppable heads made by a company. I never lived near any of the stores so I’m a little retrospectively jealous of your friend 😝 Thanks for watching, friend!
@CharlotteMillady_VideoEssays as kids i think we just saw some of our toys as the most important thing ever since we didn't have much to worry about. I had a cheaper baby doll I practically treated like my actual baby
Very good video! I got my first American Girl doll when I was 9 but didn't bond with her much. I am a doll collector now, but did not start collecting until I was 13. I purchased 3 AG dolls as a teenager and now love the brand. I find it interesting that I did not bond with my Sadge doll as a kid. The biggest part AG had in my childhood was remembering these 2 friends of mine talking about the super cool dolls they wanted for Christmas so bad. I remember I wanted a doll too, just because they wanted one but didn't receive one until I was 9, when I actually wanted one myself. I remember I lost interest in Sadge fast and went back to my pets and stuff animals as my main interest. (I was a farm kid) The two girls I was talking about actually left my school a few months before I got Sadge, i never thought of it until now, but I wonder if I was still friends with them if I would have enjoyed my new doll more. Regardless, thinking back on those times are happy memories! Your essay was incredible! I was born in 2003 so I heard about the horrors of 9/11 a lot growing up. I never thought about how it effected the girls playing with AG dolls. Tragedies like that are so sad, but we must come together and stand up for what we believe in and what's right. I really hope AG continues to become more and more inclusive, and it is so important that we do what we can, so the brand does. Thank you for making this incredible video! I just had to write you out an entire essay 😂 because I loved it so much!
Hi, Katie! Thank you so much for sharing! It's really fun to hear from those who enjoyed American Girl before or after I did. It's interesting how despite enjoying the franchise at two totally different times, you and I share that experience of American Girl reminding us of friends that we've lost simply to time and/or circumstance. I'm so glad you enjoyed the essay, and I really appreciate such a thoughtful comment! Thank you so much 🤎Your comment really made my day!
Thank you so much for your comment! 🩷 I’ve got a few things coming up that I’m really excited to share with you! If you have a second, could you please let me know what it is about this video that you would like to see more of? Is it the topic (American Girl), the analysis, or maybe something else? I’m trying to get better and better for you all! 🤗 Thanks again!
@@VideoEssayCharlotte As an adult doll collector, I personally love the American Girl content! You spoke a lot about the culture surrounding the magazines/books, maybe you could do a video honing in more on those things specifically? I also think your analysis on these topics was very well done! American Girl was definitely a huge comfort to me growing up as well. I think I've gotten back into it as an adult because frankly the world sucks right now and it helps to have an escape.
@@violintrumpet7331 I was thinking of getting back to the magazines! Do you collect other dolls? I've got a pretty big project coming up about Barbie (specifically Teen Talk Barbie). Uggh, I feel you about the world sucking right now. I hope to give people a place to escape if only for a few minutes or hours. Thanks for your comment! More coming soon!
@ I collect some Barbies as well but mainly American Girl because it was so much harder for me to get them as a kid. My parents wouldn’t buy them for me but I was lucky enough to be gifted one by a grandparent, win one in a contest, and scrape together money I got from doing odd jobs as a kid to get an additional doll/accessories. As an adult with adult money now I’m obsessed lol. For Barbies I’m more into the ones based on movies/books (Barbie or otherwise) rather than purely aesthetics. Which is interesting because I think that’s what is so special about American Girl, a lot of them are based on stories that connect us to something and to each other!
I've been chilling AG since I was 10 Year's old myself and I still do. Reading the books and playing with the dolls collectioning them and I do video's on my channel with my dolls. American Girl means the world to me. I learn to read from the books I didn't read until like 8,9,10 so for Me from reading if you give a mouse a cookie to reading chapter books at my age level is a big deal for me and my family. I don't go out much and I'm sick at lot so for me I stay inside playing with my dolls, brushing their hair reading their books playing their games on the computer and taking one with me to my infusion treatment at the hospital every 3 weeks. Then theirs UA-cam AKA AG tube it's something I'm passionate back with the brand period and the dolls of course. I'm going to be doing a video of my own of the Beforever books and the branding it's self more in-depth being an colloctorr and passionate for the brand and remember Alot about that period of 2014 for the most part but manly the Beforever era from start to finish in 2020. At the moment I'm doing a daily vlog on my channel everyday in November we'll that's my goul having chronic illness theirs times I won't have the energy and pick up the phone to film.
Wow - it sounds like American Girl has been so meaningful and has brought you comfort in tough times. Thanks so much for sharing! I'm not personally familiar with the Beforever books, but I'll keep an eye out for your work. Wishing you well and thanks for watching ❤️
