that moment when you watch this good old classic gameplay and think: kids nowadays would deem this game as "shit" alone for the fact that you have no one telling you where to bloody go and need to FIND your way through the levels on your own
Im '02, but I still played classics like Duke Nukem 3D, Doom or Quake. Dark Forces is on my To-Play list. But I still have to admit that new games are not that demanding than old games. Because nowadays you have a map which tells you everything you have to do and where to go.
I've had my copy of this for years, I remember playing it on my old Windows 98 machine and finding it really hard. Thank goodness for DOSBox for allowing me to play the old classics :)
Played this game once or twice when I was younger. Mostly watched my uncle play it though. Good times. Too bad they didn't release it on the PSN for the PS4.
Only just realised I had played this game a few hours ago but heard about it loads in Star Wars groups. Long time since I've been a kid. I remember being on the prison level and struggling.
This was the hardest game for me back when I was like 5-7, I used to nonstop play this for hours just to beat a level cuz I didn't know what to do and that made it more fun 😂😂 somehow me or my uncle beat it but I have no clue how 😂
@EnterTheGMan: You have a point there; since so many games tried to imitate Doom's level design and graphics, as well as gameplay. But in any case, in a tsunami of Id-clones-- games that tried to mimic or base their style of gameplay to those of Id Software, the company the put the FPS genre into the mainstream--, this one, alongside Heretic, are some diamonds in the rough.
It did in fact used a modified doome engine, I was able to find this on an old FAQ. "I receive the "smoking gun" internal memo from LA stating "Develop a ripoff of DOOM." (The magazine _PC Games Plus Global_ reported that "apparently LucasArts confessed to Jay Wilbur of id that they had ripped apart the DOOM engine to assemble Dark Forces.")"
I was mainly PC growing up so I never had the playstation version of this game but I did have a playstation. Now I collect games, this might be one I pick up on the PS1.
Sounds more like fanon to me. Which I'm okay with. I don't even accept the prequels as canon. I have an entirely different way of interpreting how Anakin met Obi-Wan, became a Jedi, fell to the Dark Side, and assisted in the rise of the Empire. :P
marylovesdavidcook Oh, er... it's kind of lengthy. I mostly try and rebuild from what we know from the OT, minus the parts that don't fit in the PT. For instance, we know Obi-Wan was trained by Yoda, and he took the initiative to train Anakin, seeing his potential. No mention is ever made of Qui-Gon, which seems odd if he was so important to training him in the first place. Anakin was described a skilled pilot when they met, but he sort of fumbles through his first real flight, and Obi-Wan barely even sees anything to do with him throughout Episode I, because he's on the ship. We know Owen took issue with Anakin joining Obi-Wan joining "old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade," and thought Anakin should have stayed there on Tatooine. This suggests they knew each other longer than a brief period where Anakin inquires about his mother, goes and finds her, kills a bunch of Sand People, and disappears again, no mention of Obi-Wan save to the strange girl he appeared with, while they were on the ship. We know Obi-Wan served under Bail Organa but he barely even gets any screentime, is known to be a senator and (like so many other things) is explained away with a handwave that the Jedi serve the Senate. And that is all just my explanation... uargh... so basically, I think Luke and Leia's mother should have been Owen's sister. Obi-Wan should have met (a teenage) Anakin and taken the initiative of his own accord to train him. He wouldn't have been a slave, but (in keeping with George Lucas's own interest in a thematic cycle) something of a farmboy, perhaps working for the Lars family, or even simply working as a mechanic (to keep his mechanical interests and worldview of people as objects). They became fast friends, but Anakin's enthusiasm for becoming a Jedi became a need to become better, ever better, far better than his peers, asking questions and wanting to do far more than Obi-Wan could ever teach, which led to frustration and seeking answers elsewhere. Which brought him to Palpatine, and the Dark Side. And he slipped away from his friend, and from his wife, and eventually led to betrayal. He was also far more devout in the OT than in the prequels. Suggests to me that he should have been taking it quite seriously (a bit like Luke). I think Obi-Wan should have been the one who fit the Han Solo archetype (to an extent). Taking risks, like training Anakin, and his character arc would have led to him becoming humbled and taking responsibility for his actions, seeking a hermit life to protect Luke from his father. I also think the Clone Wars would make more sense if the Clones were the villains, or if they were used on both sides, or if the wars were specifically about the ethics of cloning. It seems strange that Jedi, who honor all life, would be okay with this, and Sith, who see no problem with the devaluation of life, would simply utilize droids and allow Jedi reprieve from the ethical dilemma of killing living things. Honestly, I think the Jedi would have been the biggest opponents of the use of clones in war. The Clone Wars alone should have been what lead to the Academy (that Luke talks about going to) and a Republic Army (that leads to the stormtroopers). Not simply phasing out clones for convenience's sake. Meanwhile, Luke and Leia should have lived a bit before their mother died, with their mother taking Leia and hiding out on Alderaan, before she died and Leia being adopted by Organa. It makes far more sense than an instant where she could have sensed feelings or whatever. And lastly... love should have been what saved him. Not what drove him to the Dark Side. He should have been overtaken by powerlust and selfishness, an urge to be better than he was, and better than others, making a good person into a monster. It was the realization that he had a son that turned him back and reminded him of who he once was, the woman he once loved, and the opportunities for a normal life he lost through service to his master. ...This was a bit more scattered than I intended, too... sorry...
@DNchap1417 I would have to say Jedi Knight is my fave due to it having a good story and its the first time you get to use a lightsaber in a first person mode. Some of the boss battles are a bit tricky but for me it has some memorable levels. Plus the cutscenes are a good use of live action and cgi which you don't really see anymore.
@EnterTheGMan: And another thing, of the Dark Forces/JK series, which one is your favourite and why? In my case, I'm stuck between this one and Jedi Outcast. It's funny that the true title of JO is Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast!!!
Tehcnically, with Dark forces, like many Doom-derived games of the time, has no room above another room, but the designers found a way to cheat around this limitation. They split the mission maps into sections, usually linked by an lift or a certain door. As such, each misison does not have one map, but rather 3 or even 4 different maps (press F1 and Ithink you'll know what I mean), so the moment you press a switch, you're immediately warped into another map!
Id like to think that this is still canon, a rebel backup plan as it were in case the rogue one plan didnt work. Plus this starts with the opening crawl, which makes it canon in my book. Put an opening crawl in Rogue One then we'll talk.
In fact, after watching this, there is nothing to say that Kyle didnt steal some version of the plans. Because the description in the next video is so vague, there is nothing to say that Kyle could've grabbed a copy or even an incomplete copy somewhere else while Jyn was off playing on the beach with the multi-culture pals. Kyle delivers it a while later, but his info never makes it all the wayto leia because she doesnt need it.
I'm gonna sound like such a noob, but how do you get more lives in this game? New player here. I find health, ammo, guns, and powerups, but I can't seem to get more lives. I lost 2 of them in the first level, and now I've been hanging onto my last life for the rest of the game. Someone, how do I get more? Google only shows cheats, which I don't want. Thanks.
Extra lives are hidden through the levels. If you go to the end of the vid, you'll see I collect one that is hidden in a vent and the very end of the level. I couldn't tell you where all the extra lives are because I don't know, you may have to check out a walkthrough. Hope this helps
The controls in this game are HORRIBLE! Having to press Page Up and Page Down to look up and down is nowhere near natural. I like the game itself; it's just hard to use the controls!

ugh yeah, I hate when everything is on "rails".
cant believe I was only 5 and still remember playing this, I was garbage at it of course but still crazy to think about.
I've had my copy of this for years, I remember playing it on my old Windows 98 machine and finding it really hard. Thank goodness for DOSBox for allowing me to play the old classics :)
I've been looking for this game for years and finally found it.
This game is available at GoG.com. ;)
Played this game once or twice when I was younger. Mostly watched my uncle play it though. Good times. Too bad they didn't release it on the PSN for the PS4.
Simply one of the best game I ever played, such memories.....
I was playing this game drunk last night and had to open this video up because I couldn't finish the level
this game is confusing af even sober
I already had to check this Video after 2min cause I have no idea of where I have to go
I could never get past the prison level when I was a kid, couldnt find a way to open the cellblock door.
Only just realised I had played this game a few hours ago but heard about it loads in Star Wars groups. Long time since I've been a kid. I remember being on the prison level and struggling.
CJKeig I always got stuck on the same level as a kid, don't think I was to good a solving puzzles when I was younger
G-Man's Gaming
ya I had no idea what to do when playing myst or riven.
G-Man's Gaming I played this when it first came out 20 years ago as a 22 year old...and still couldn't figure it out.
This was the hardest game for me back when I was like 5-7, I used to nonstop play this for hours just to beat a level cuz I didn't know what to do and that made it more fun 😂😂 somehow me or my uncle beat it but I have no clue how 😂

this is a trip . thanks for posting these videos. this game was my first experience with the FPS genre.
No problem, thank you for the nice comment.
Anyone here with the Remaster Edition?
I'm glad this walkthrough is here, as the remake is out and good god, the level design is awful.
It's too bad the technology didn't exist yet for enemies to patrol, and for Kyle to use stealth.
It did in fact used a modified doome engine, I was able to find this on an old FAQ.

You can hear some of the sound effects also used in both Duke Nukem 64 and Shadows of the Empire.
The sound design was so satisfying
thing is, i love how the PC version plays, but LOVE the Playstation version's OST
I was mainly PC growing up so I never had the playstation version of this game but I did have a playstation. Now I collect games, this might be one I pick up on the PS1.
@Wazzazzle It used the Jedi Engine (according to Wiki) only this and outlaws used it. I might be wrong but I think is a modded Doom engine
This was one of my first ever games to play. It’s was my first Star Wars game. And I’m amazed that I even found gameplay of it 🤣🤣
I remember downloading the demo for this through dialup. Took ~2.5 hours and I think the file was ~2MB.
I loved this game as a kid could never get the sound to work on my pc god I wish I still had this
It's available on both GOG and Steam and with the summer sales on, it's really cheap. But yes, it is a great game!
@EnterTheGMan It looks like the Doom engine.
Only thing that hasn't aged well is the soundtrack, but awesome game.
Rogue One is about to replace this mission in the canon.
fuck disney
Language! And if you don't like Rogue One, you can stick with this level. Canon is whatever YOU want, in YOUR mind.
Sounds more like fanon to me.
Which I'm okay with. I don't even accept the prequels as canon. I have an entirely different way of interpreting how Anakin met Obi-Wan, became a Jedi, fell to the Dark Side, and assisted in the rise of the Empire. :P
Andrew Jenkins Can you tell your story? I'm actually mildly interested.

One of the best Star wars games ever aside from battlefront 2
@EnterTheGMan: And another thing, of the Dark Forces/JK series, which one is your favourite and why? In my case, I'm stuck between this one and Jedi Outcast. It's funny that the true title of JO is Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast!!!
I used to get so motion sick playing this....I'm still getting a headache watching this video!
