What Is Memento Mori? (Explained In 5 Minutes)

  • It’s worth asking, as the Stoics did, what were we really rushing through?
    On the other side of whatever you’re doing, eventually, inevitably, is one thing. What you’re rushing towards is death. And you’re doing it at the expense of the present moment. You tell yourself that the future-the thing you’re after-will be better. But the truth is, it’s not guaranteed. The only thing for sure is now. In this video Ryan Holiday explains what memento mori is in under 5 minutes.
    Seneca reminds us that death is something that’s happening here, even as you read this. The time that passes belongs to death, he says. What is lived we never get back. We are dying every minute, every second. When we hurry we are speeding that along.
    That’s the purpose of memento mori-"remember that you will die.” It’s purpose is to make you slow down. To not rush through this moment but to exist in it. To be present for it. Even if it is mundane. Even if there is something else you’d rather be doing, even if what may come next is likely better.
    And that’s why we made the Memento Mori Life Calendar.
    The average human lifespan nowadays is 80 years. That means, your life is made up of (hopefully) 4,160 weeks. So the Memento Mori Life Calendar has 4,160 dots, each dot representing a week of your life and each row representing 2 years of your life. By filling in the Memento Mori Life Calendar every week, you will not only see how much life you've already lived (or as Seneca says, how much you’ve already died), but also how much life you've (hopefully) got left.
    And of course, none of those to-be-filled-in dots are guaranteed. Every day it is true: this could be your last day on this planet. As wonderful as it would be if there was no such thing as death, we have to use death as a tool. We have to use it as a spur to move us forward. We have to let it stop us from looking forward to summer. And we have to be made better for the fact that we don’t know how much time we have. We never do. And we never will.

    "No matter what anyone says or does, my task is be good."
    This is probably my favorite Aurelius quote. I find it to be superior to the "golden rule".

    • @mangoman2148
      @mangoman2148 2 роки тому +5

      The golden rule is precarious in my experience. We all have unique preferences in how we want to be spoken to, cared for etc. When I'm lazy enough to assume someone wants to be treated the same way I do, it often leads to friction. The key is being present enough around those I care about to learn how *they* want to be treated.

    • @ganh222

      Which is the golden rule?

      @MichaelBiebersWorld Рік тому +3

      @@ganh222
      Not exactly. Some people treat others poorly, because they expect to be treated poorly. This is acceptable within the perspective of the "golden rule".
      Mango man attempts to treat people in the manner that those people want to be treated.
      Marcus Aurelius suggests to be good to people, no matter what they do to you.

    • @chloe-sunshine7
      @chloe-sunshine7 10 місяців тому +1

      I believe the "golden rule" is based on the same idea, but simplified in a way that needs less critical thinking to understand. Children may struggle with weighing other people's opinions, so if you give them a kind of universal question they can ask themselves, "how would I feel if someone did this to me?" Then they can more easily assess the situation.
      I don't think we're born with an inherent idea of what good is. I feel like that sentence belongs here somewhere

  • @thebenjiguy

    "Too late". Those words haunt all of us. Even as young as 18. They can torture endlessly no matter what you've lost, what you've never tried for. How easily they steal away our joy, our present, our life.
    "Too late". How horrific the sound. I ask you to not let these words take whatever else remains here for you. They may have taken much, they might be true, but I plead with you to fight death back and love purely whatever you may still touch and speak to.
    Do not let death take your spirit early as it whispers those words in your night. Get up, seize what remains, and fight.

Well some crazy person coming from behind me crossed the entire road at about 70 mph and came within a foot or 2 of hitting me. The air pressure from the car passing me nearly knocked me off balance that’s how close it was. I did not hear her coming as I was listening to music. I work as a volunteer at humanitarian organisation at SK/UA borders, that focuses on providing humanitarian support to the Ukraine, especially to the western part, which is overcrowded with refugees from the east.
    Right now, I´m spending a few days at home, having a break, but I can feel that really I´m strugling with my mental health. Getting in touch with war is traumatizing and some of my coleagues, who work there from the start of the war, are in even much worse state.
    In the past, stoicism, and especially your work, helped me to get through some bad shit. But now, I have no idea how to use it...
    Cold you make a video about how to use stoicism to deal with trauma? Or, if you did already in the past, send me some link?

    Big Thanks.

    Now just talking about Memento Mori. It really scared my soul out of me at first because it's such a powerful, but scary fact to accept: you're gonna die. Everyone of us know deep down this is true, but we usually try so hard not to think about it, or even to deny it, that it was really a journary to get in touch and accept this fact. Nevertheless, once you do accept and let this determine how you do things, what you put your time, attention and prensence on, how you talk to people and, most importantly, what you do when there's nobody to see it's really life-changing.

    How does one deal with the thoughts of impulsivity or forgetting about the consequences of one's actions today when one will actually still live tomorrow? I'm finding it difficult to apply memento mori when one has to deal with people especially, since people and connections can still matter yrs in the future. Memento mori seems to me for short-term goals, or thinking in terms of scarcity.
    Although I do realize it's a matter of prioritization, do what one can do for a long-term goal if that's what matters to someone, enjoy the process and all that.

    It's hard to think consciously about death, even if you're older. A way i prefer is to ask myself "if someone appeared out of nowhere and pointed a gun at my face, asking to justify for him not to press the trigger, would i be able to give a convincing argument?". 99.9999% of us live totally pointless lifes of permanent distractions. Sadly, so am i.

    A friend shared this video. I appreciate the message, live as if today is my last day, be present and self-aware, be who I’d want to be remembered as honestly. I did notice that the is no Part 3 in this video . . . Only parts 1, 2, 4 and 5. Was this an oops? I feel that a part 3 was mentioned, just forgot the placard. Thanks for the quick explanation of memento mori.

    It's because we cannot help but fear death, especially if we like being alive.
    I suppose you'd have to somehow overcome the anxiety aspect surrounding that to think about it without it paralyzing your action and making you seek comfort and safety. After all this is preprogrammed survival behavior. Perhaps numbing yourself to fear by doing things that are dangerous?

    At seventy -four, each new day is a horrible curse, not a blessing. My response to ''Memento Mori'' is ''Bring It On ASAP!'' I often think of hastening the process, since whether I live like Marcus Aurelius or Jeffrey Dahmer for the horrible days remaining to me will no matter. I'm afraid that my weakness has made my Stoicism collapse into nihilism.
