      Excellent video Ken. I've been watching your videos for a bit and they're empowering. I also think fundamentally having a "why" or a purpose or the lack of it plays a huge part in why anyone may be broke or not. Keep it up!

    I don't use the term "broke", as the motivational speaker Les Brown says it's not good to affirm the negative. So I'll say that I'm experiencing a cash flow deficit at the moment. This is due to my own ignorance, poor decisions and lifestyle choices as well as life just happening.
    I'm currently starting over from scratch as a single mother of two. I'm in my early 40's and though on paper my circumstances seem dire, I believe it's never too late for me. I WILL BE FINANCIALLY FREE.

    Ken you have taught and motivated me immensely! I am currently living between sick pay and universal credit. Anyway, I am perpetually broke but have got organic and natural cosmetics formulation and brewing kambucha hobbies. All of which I have shared with friends who tell me the products have potential. However, with covid-19 I have been put out of work because of health issues plus my job (healthcare support worker) cannot be done at home. I don't have capital to take it further. Nonetheless, I keep brewing and formulating. I do believe I can fly...

    We were living paycheck to paycheck. I’ve watched a tonne of UA-cam videos on finance incl you and Ramsey. The thing that stuck out to me was PAY YOURSELF FIRST! My bank allows me to have 5 savings accounts attached to it. So I use them as ‘cash envelope’ type systems. I move money about between them and main account and save in one of those. It’s really helped giving me and hubby our own spending money, whilst paying the bills/food/saving. We’ve done a month of this and now halfway through the 2nd month. It’s worked so well!

    Volunteering is definitely a good way to gain new skills and also get a reference for any future job you might apply for. Many charities provide extra training for their volunteers and will also pay for any checks you might need if working with children or vulnerable people. It's win win for you and the charity, so long as you do give them sufficient of your time and work.

    This video was very inciteful and really made me think about a few things. I'm 20 years old and have been building my own video production company for the last two years. At the age of 18, I deferred my university application and decided to invest in trying to build a sustainable business - just under two years later I'm finally starting to see returning clients and a relatively sustainable income. However, I would still say that due to the volatility of work I'm mostly living from paycheck to paycheck so this video has been a big eye-opener, thank you for the great information! If you have any further tips that might benefit someone like me that would be greatly appreciated!

    • @TheHumblePenny
      @TheHumblePenny  4 роки тому +1

      What were you going to study at university?
      Welldone for building your own business. You most certainly have the right mindset.
      How would you describe your ideal customer? The one thing I'd suggest is for you to consider selling your knowledge as a digital product.

    • @LouisJonesFilm
      @LouisJonesFilm 4 роки тому +1

      The Humble Penny hey! I was going to go to university for Film Production. However, when it got to deciding whether to go or defer I realised that over the previous 4 years I’d taught myself everything I’d have learnt in the first 1.5 years so thought it would be a waste of time to go over something I already know.
      Thank you! It’s definitely been a hard process.
      It’s funny you say that as I’ve been considering doing this for a while now. I was thinking about making a course surrounding the marketing side of the business - I feel there’s a lot of info on how to learn video on UA-cam but not as much on how to make a living from it.

    • @TheHumblePenny
      @TheHumblePenny  4 роки тому

With the help from your videos, I am making changes through selling unwanted items from around my house and budgeting better. I have no emergency fund. I have a 0% credit card and a low interest loan, would you recommend I pay these off first or build an emergency fund? Many thanks 🙏

    • @TheHumblePenny
      @TheHumblePenny  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Eleri
      Thank you! 😀
      I'd say you should build that emergency fund. It shouldn't take too long if you focus on it. You need that buffer and don't want to dip into overdrafts or even possibly taking on more expensive debt.
      Once you've built up a bit of a buffer, then you need a game plan for your low interest debt whilst keeping an eye on the 0% credit card.
      That's how I would do it.

    I think my future lies with digital skills. I live with an energy limiting disability that's very unpredictable. It can also affect me cognitively, so even doing things online can be difficult and sporadic I've been online since the 90s, used to run a couple of Yahoo groups and started up a local Freecycle group years ago. I think I need more hard digital skills, rather than soft ones. Not easy as I'm broker than a very broke thing on the end of a very skinny broke stick. 😄 I can't attend a class due to my disability. I definitely need to do more research. It's slow going as that's the only speed I can go at. Food for thought though. Thanks for that 🙂

    Regarding those living from pay cheque to pay cheque a simple solution is either you increase your earning or decrease your spending. If one can cut back on acquiring depreciating liabilities and focus on mainly on appreciating assets. I was once broke and this is exactly what I did, reduce my expenditures, buy assets, invest 25% of your monthly wages, save a further 25% in cash and the remaining 50% to service liability such a mortgage, food and bills. Excellent content!

    Hi Ken thank you so much for your videos I have been watching different once since coming across your channel yesterday to learn more about investing. I'm currently living paycheck to paycheck and hope to become financially free and able to save and invest. My struggles right now is mainly because I'm a single mum of three I work full time in recruitment so I don't earn what I would desire to. I found this really helpful!!! Thank you and be blessed

      @@lj2070 Emergency fund should be 3-6 months of current spending.
      Minimise your mortgage as much as possible as it is only going to cost you money via the bank's interest rate (even though they are very low at the moment). Best way to do this is really consider what home you're buying... do you really need 3/4 bedrooms in a fancy neighbourhood, or will 1/2 bedrooms in a slightly less desirable area suffice, the latter can be half or even quarter the price! If you have a small mortgage, then you can put more money towards long term savings for retirement.
      Incomes are only limited by ourselves.

Specifically the tail end - there’s lots on top end /putting money in but can we have more on dividends and taxes / reinvesting / deciding if and when to sell shares to take money out? Ken.. I am from Oguta and an immigrant as well. I have to say your videos speak directly to me. Guess the bit about living paycheck to paycheck whilst trying to sort out debts racked up over years as an immigrant just basically applies to me. I have total debts of just under 10k and it's frustrating servicing these debts whilst trying to meet other obligations.
    After watching your video just now, I have applied for two part time weekend jobs. And I'll look to see how I can improve my digital skills to my WiFi makes me money. Funny when you mentioned Freelancing, it just hit me how I just mentored my sister to get her a very decent job pre-graduation through re-editing an online job assessment responses and practicing mock interviews. How to turn this into a freelance or business opportunity hasn't quite hit me. People at work send their competency answers to me to assess before they submit for job applications. Well done for your videos. Really insightful.

However, your page got recommended to me as I was trying to glean some knowledge about diversifying my portfolio as opposed to doing my 9 - 5 and just getting by. Most forums are US tailored but I love that your page is British and underpinned by a bit of BAME realism. I have subscribed to your academy waiting list. YOU HAVE A GOLD MINE IN YOUR HANDS!!!!! Your skills are very much in demand.
      Off the top of my head I'll say:
      1. Learn to write CVs and Resumes as well.
      2. Learn to write Statements of Purpose, Personal Statements etc
      3. Register on upwork and fiverr.
      4. Get active on Nigerian Twitter and Instagram. From experience, so many people are looking for these services.
      I know a company that charges about £15 just to write CVs (In Nigeria)
      Add that to your already existing skills and you have a winner!
      5. Finally, (because you are my Igbo brother, lol) As a long term plan, save some money, take a course on how to start an online business and then go full blown into Education and career Consulting services- scholarship advise, getting people in Nigeria into schools in UK, mock interview sessions charged at an hourly rate etc.
      Hope this helps. All the best!

      Hi Jessica
      Sorry to read about your breakup. This is a difficult aspect of a relationship.
      Have you considered targeting the blogging communities. Tons of people have crap sites and need help creating something with potential future value.
      Do you have links to any work you have done in the past? Do you create WordPress sites?

    • @jessica_tee

      @@TheHumblePenny I actually don't make WordPress sites, or have examples because all of the projects I've been a part of have been for work, so while I was a part of it and have created lots I can't put it in my own portfolio :/
      Maybe learning WordPress could be an option for me, I have thought about it before but it would take time away from learning tech in my spare time that will help my career. Frameworks like React & Gatsby for example will help me make more money in my 9-5 🤔
      There are people making money from making Wordpress sites who maybe don't have as much coding experience as I do though so maybe I should give it more thought.
      Thanks for your reply 😊 👍

    I clicked on the video, paused it, went to make a coffee and enjoying it while listening to you. I would never bother to do this if I wasn't sure it's going to be a good video. So, you take a sip, I take a sip too, lol. Speak to me!
    I think a key point you mentioned is to take radical action. I decided to go to university as a mature student with 3 kids and study accounting. A year later I convinced my partner to do the same. I'm about to graduate this year so I'm almost done. I managed to get my first accounting job that paid the most I have ever been paid per hour in my second year of uni. Now, I'm about to start my next position next week with an even further pay rise and a great benefits package. The way I got my first job was by being even more radical; I asked for help which is something I rarely used to do. As a person who was always so shy and timid and had so much pride, I reached out to my network and let them know I was looking for my first position in accounting. Within 2 weeks, I got a job offer without an interview through a friend from a company they used to work with. So definitely be radical and also build and maintain your network, I cannot tell you how valuable your network is.
    I still have a way to go, but I can see the light. But your videos just spur me on Ken and Mary. I feel I've discovered you just at the right moment in my life. This is your purpose!
