For some reason, I like people talking about something that they are passionate about.
Perhaps thier enthusiasm fills me with interest.
Exactly. Totally agree
Well it's hard to hide, I absolutely love this book
THIS.
I was gonna comment the exact same thing! His passion makes it all the more better
I admire your personality.
You convey your passion intriguingly and respect the craftsmanship of others in such a sincere manner.
You're quite the gentleman.
Thank you for sharing this with everyone.
Awh, well thank you Robert, I love hearing that you're enjoying my videos :)

Your video work is top quality and your content resonates at very soulful frequencies. I will coment more from now on since I know you appreciate it.
@@AdamDuffArt aaaah yes the subscribe button just doubled in size
Something that stood out to me was the challenge of this game, its like they playtested it with the purpose of making every second of the game push you to try your best. There was tons of variety and you had to constantly learn to progress. Cuphead is an all around perfect game to me, but i think any gamer who likes a good challenge owes it to themselves to play this game
Yaaay!!! Thank you so much Adam, that was a joy to watch! I'm also amazed at the intense love and quality that went into the Art Book. Such an honor to be part of it! ^_^
You worked with a stellar team - I’m so smitten by the care and talent oozing from this project - and I can’t stress enough how much quality your contributions brought to it
You’re a precious artist Tina
@UpsidedownGAMZ uhm, can you not? its creepy.
"Cuphead was inspired by Fritz the Cat." Man, THAT would have been a very different game.
That game would be an absolute wonder. 😆😆
@@MichelleMelton7 On Newgrounds, maybe. Ugh.
Oh god
Oh
Oh non
haha I would definitely play that game
I just discovered what Fritz the Cat is 🙃
I like Cuphead more than Disney stuff. The game has some unique things including vicious bosses like King Dice and that hot gorgon mermaid.
theyre inspired by disney though, at least the stuff from the 30s
cuphead was different because its not just about disney. its not so obvious most of the time, but cuphead was also HEAVILY inspired by classic gaming too
“Hot gorgon mermaid”.
*Nice.*
i think it is not just Disney inspired, rather the 30s cartoon from many studios... all looked kinda same.
@@belosneshkaaaa Honestly I feel there's more influence from Fleischer studios than Disney.
This game is the reason I started learning animation and game dev, I got the book as well, I reference it a ton, it's awesome!
1950:
My country in Europe: suffers after the effects of World War II

@@Snavels which one was that?

@@Snavels In fact, everybody wanted nothing to do with this war, maybe except germany and their allies. And this war took you out from Great Depression so you ended with the best situation of us all. Perhaps only you took advantage of this war. Don't forget about genocide of two Japanese cities full of civilians, which was nuked out of existence.
"An interactive work of art"
Yup, that's what a game is. That's why so many games have books full of concept art.
never played that game but sounds awesome
I don't have video games and never played this, but I remember when this came out,, that I said: They need to do an Art of book of this! And it happened! NOw I only need to put the money together and/or wait for a black Friday or something. Then I'll be able to import it to my country. It surely gives me something to look forward to.
I've never seen someone put a facecam on a motorized slider.
You've probably created the most beautiful facecam shot on UA-cam.
I thought I was just drunk n the room was moving
I can’t even concentrate on what he’s saying because in my head is like ‘wow that’s so subtle and beautiful, how did he think of that’ lol
Personally I’m not into games that much, I actually really really suck at them, which I guess is the reason why I don’t play that often haha. But, my brother plays games a lot, and I’m usually not Interested in what he’s doing but when he bought this game I was immediately attracted to the art. I would sit next to him and watch him play for hours, just admiring the details and design which I loved! Although I never really got around to playing the game, I enjoyed it from afar. It’s so unique and the whole concept just attracts me. I’m glad this game exists.
Lucidpixul: "appreciates the fact that everything was drawn by hand"
My arm after drawing a buttload of circles and cubes: OH YEAHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!
please do a part two! I wanna hear more
I would love to have longer videos from you. I know you say its already long but I would watch a 2 hour video of you just talking about art books as your insight is incredible and how instead of critiquing you point out the great techniques and things the artists have done.
Thanks!
Thank you for this! I’ll be buying a copy for Christmas!
Passion projects like these deserve all our money, the love for the animation and videogames is oozing in every frame
I had never even heard of this book before.
So thank you for reviewing it.
But the instant you opened the book, it immediately struck me as a continuation of the greatest animation book there is. The magnificent Illusion of life.
I have to read this at some point and play the game ofc.
Rafael Grasseti is a fantastic artist. I follow the heck out of his work.
I just found your channel fairly recently, and I absolutely just had to write some sort of message to express my gratitude. If it wasn't for your wisdom and words of encouragement, I do not believe I would still draw and paint- despite the vast majority of my life that I have done both of these things. I had given up, more or less, without just outright throwing down my pen and saying: "I quit." I realize how now flawed my perspective of my own art was, and that the indifference I was being met with only holds the weight and value that I allow it to.
I'm going to keep pushing and growing and seeing where art takes me. And for that, I thank you, eternally.
I can’t express enough how happy I am to hear that my friend - don’t lose this momentum - just keep going. :)
Thank you
you just made me realize that watching woody woodpecker after school (1979) was (for ME ) actually more important than being in school. :D
subscribed, your content's awesome. I studied illustration and you're the only creator I've found who talks sense
HI!!!This art book is a very good inspiration for any artist, who likes illustration and animation ... thank you very much for the video ...
I've been eagerly waiting for the release of this book for months now. I can't afford to buy the special edition like I had wanted, but I just picked up the kindle edition tonight. This vid definitely made me finally take the leap. I loved listening to you talk about the history of animation and storytelling and I can't wait to check out more of your stuff.
I love Cuphead (regardless of the fact the game frustrates me more than writing my dissertation back at university - although I managed to finish that somehow 😂).
I bought this book because I am passionate about 1930s cartoon and creating children’s literature. I want to use this book as inspiration and as something for guests to flick through in my home.
10:13 - Mike Tyson was far more well-known for the Bite Fight than he was for his punch-out. It was and still is remembered because it was one of the more colourful incidents in sports. Even today, people still talk about it.
Got really excited about this particular episode because I have the game on my switch. The art style is amazing as well and the rich history you speak of that went into all of it speaks volumes. Definitely will be getting the book🙏🏽 Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure - thank you Rex :)
Awesome 😁😍🤗🤗🤗😎
Your video for your passions for this game project is fun to listen to. Thank you. Cuphead is a good game with alot of passion behind it.
This game pissed me off so much just WATCHING gamers play it. 😂 👌
Please make another video about this book
Video games are interactive works of art though.
"I wouldn't call it a game, I'd call it an interactive work of art."
All games are interactive works of art. A games visuals do not make it art or not art.
Is this how you point out to everyone that you missed the point? And no, not all games can be considered "art".
Lmao okay.
Plenty of games are not art. They are just for entertainment. FIFA is not art, CoD is not art. They don’t try to be art, they just try to be fun.
@@Zavendea I see what you mean and respect your opinion but personally I disagree, I think even bad art or boring art is just as valid to be called art, whether it is meant to be or not
Lewis Gads But I don’t think the intention of EA Sports is “Let’s make a beautiful, thought-provoking piece of art.” It’s just to make something for people to enjoy. It’s not “bad art.” It’s just not art at all imo.
0:54, thats what a video game is!
Cuphead is a work of art.
A great showcase for a great game!
such incredible content man, how did you get your camera to pan subtlety while you were sitting t the desk??
So good video! Thanks))
Love this stuff, started off super realism and studied Industrial Design to working on my cartooning now. Its a different beast love the raw expressiveness that cartoons and anime have. On a side note being a Merchant/store owner has changed but not as much as you would think. Still have to find those rare commodities to compete and there is always risk of robberies. Whether it be on the streets at your place of business or your home. So allot of security measures have to be put in place to keep you, your employees, customers and business safe. (Speaking from years of experience in family business.)
Cuphead inspired me to become an animator. My work is so silly compared to the Godly work in Cuphead, but it’s still so inspiring
The pig merchant is not as "researched" as you think. I mean it is, but not by this team. It's literally a tribute to the same character in the game Wonderboy, who got a recent remake. Check that too, beautiful art.
Thank you! I was just thinking that when I was hearing his very lengthy explanation that probably has no bearings of the character. Where did he come up with all that?
I couldn't get enough, I learned so much listening. I laughed when you said the video is too long, I can watch 60 minutes of this.
Cool
An interactive piece of art is the definition of a game in general.
So many games aren’t art tho. Plenty of indie games are, sure. But FIFA isn’t a work of art. Call of Duty isn’t a work of art. They’re just supposed to be fun.
This tool of character juxtaposition that he described is what you would call a foil. Foil is a powerful literary device to emphasize ideas through comparison.
That subtle camera tracking... very slick touch 👌
I LOVE cupheads art. It's so inspiring.i watch my friends play it
Everyone in my family is addicted to it - I had to fight everyone off my computer to get work done lol
this not a game this is a masterpiece !
Awesome video Adam. You're a real gem
love the appreciation you show for the hard work that was put into this.
hate how you dismiss digital and cgi work as "shortcuts" just because they were not made with ink
I hate games with high level of difficulty but the art of Cup Head is amazing
Agreed. Its toooo hard. Beautiful game though.
Porkring reminded me so much of the old "Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap" vendor NPC, right with the eyepatch and all. Kind of curious from where that design of a pigman with an eyepatch comes from 🤔
Would you do a video on Hollow Knight too? Another beautiful game.
absolutely love this series, keep up the great work man!
"ridiculously long"... man I'd kill for 3h long director's cut
I have never played cup head but I do enjoy it's art style. It has such a nice vintage look that has disappeared.
It brings the old 1930's Disney animation, back then the best 10 Disney animator's were there with their beautiful character designs and art work (them being Milt Kahel, Art Babbitt , Tim Burton , ECT) I have the 'animator's servivel kit' book I'm not very much into books but I see this as the best book for animation basics and how the Author of the book 'Richard Williams' elaborates everything in a smooth way so the reader can understand even tho there is some complicated words in the book but it may be because of the timeline (idk why I wrote all this but I did anyway😁)
Lol Fritz the cat! Quite a different toon from Felix haha.
maybe a weird thing to ask but i would love to see/take on braking down animation. ie like explaining how they did a thing, why they did the thing ect i know you are busy n all but like just an idea if you ever run out of art books or just bored
Animation is amazing. It still always surprises me.
Currently making a video game for art school. I just want to thank you for all the content you've put out. You've taught me a lot 💕❤️💕❤️💞💞❤️💕
This is just...incredible! I am FLOORED!!!
recently Ive been watching a few review videos about new Marvel Comics. Then suddenly, I think of your videos about art collection and what makes them so so good. I just found this is a great opportunity to see clear what makes a good piece of art. Thank you so much for making these videos. I have not played the game though *sad*.
Fantastic video as always. Thank you once again for making world class content.
Thanks!!!
You have such excellent presentation!
it's a beautiful art style that works best animated.
There is always *always* smart and actionable advice in here to plant that creative seed. Always glad I watched.
The lighting in your videos is stunning. I feel warm & comfy listening :) And how do you that subtle pan left & right?! Is your camera on a toy train? Or dolly setup?! ....is it a pigeon you’ve trained walking back & forth? It obviously has to be a resurrected pigeon from the 20s or 40s, I dunno if pigeons are that smart but maybe...and just smooth out all the up and down camera shakes « Just stop moving your pigeon head for 1.5 millisecondes! »
good vidja
the quality of this video though...holy crap it looks like something that would be on tv O-o
Aren't game just interactive art
it's Nawrocki Adumm..;)
Awesome! Thank you!!! :)
Love this and appreciate the work you put into it, but please verify names of characters before saying them. Fritz the Cat was a funny gaff that at least got corrected, but it’s NOT Shrubshire Smasher, it’s “Shropshire Slasher”, from Looney Toons, “Deduce, You Say” with one of the best jokes: Porky Pig as Watson asks him questions:
PP: “Name?”
SS: “Shropshire Slasher”
PP: ”Occupation?”
SS: ”Shropshire Slasher”
I love seeing creators enjoying other's creations. That's when the creator truly gets the appreciation he deserves.
Freudian slip! Hahaha! You guys should check out Fritz the cat just the same!
I love the art in the game. It is just a shame the stupid difficulty made me give up on it very quickly. I don't have the patience nor the time I used to have to suffer through it.
Great video Adam! I was wondering if you would be able to make a video on the art of Adventure Time? I ADORE the show, and the art has been a huge inspiration to me, would love to see your take on it!
How did you get your camera to oscillate?
This is amazingggg
Great video! Even your cinematography was good! I've always had a interest in animation, yet it's so time consuming. I guess that's what makes it so impressive!
Loved the video. I really like when a complex and deep process results in really simple designs.
Thanks for sharing!
the essence of animation art - capturing a huge amount of subtlety in very minimalistic design - something often taken very much for granted by realist artists
@@AdamDuffArt
It's really hard to achieve. I have been working at it for years and that synthesis is a really nice challenge.
The camera work you did looked sick
N I kove this kind of art style.
Games can be art. It's just a medium.
WE'LL GET ART BOOK OF CUPHEAD DLC IN OCTOBER, YEEEEY
I really enjoy this format) keep it up
Btw the character's name from dark souls 3 is greirat. He's not actually a rat
for some reason the slow turn of the camera seems quite unsettling
I thought I was drunk
IM NOT ALONE
THANK GOD
I feel like I'm an ant crawling across his desk

WHY THIS VIDEO HAS ONLY 110.905 VIEWS THAT IS NOT FAIR
Fritz the cat lol
now i want to see a fritz the cat inspired cuphead game. its gonna be raunchy.
It'd be interesting to see a Ralph Bakshi inspired game.
@@ThunderBeam707 the banner saga took a lot of isnpiration from ralph bakshi.
My friend and I have been dying for the dlc for like two years
This game is so beautiful but so damn hard and frustrating....I remember me and a friend had to team up, one moved and one fired
I like the quote about humanizing animals. It makes me realize why I'm really taken with the animation of "Beastars". I never was a huge fan of 'slice-of-life' or high-school settings for Animation. But they really make me wanna relate to the anthropomorphized animals!
More like BORAPHYL!
The swishy camera is super cool
Why thank you :)
I mean this is just a love letter to Tina...
Pretty much yeah :) well, Tina and the rest of the geniuses who put this masterpiece together
Adam Duff LUCIDPIXUL Ohhhh, it’s admirable! Really nice of you to give a shout out to a talented artist! She does seem amazing though lol!
