    People are not mad at the pick, people are mad that you paid a guy 100 million guaranteed to draft a guy in the top 10 to be a backup? You didn’t have to spend that type of money on a qb when you coulda just made the pick and used that money to fill other holes on the team

    • @marcusmcgraw3519

      Thanks for your common sense. If they didn’t sign Cousins, people would have been ecstatic about this pick. But you could have finally grabbed a much needed edge rusher, and you make a luxury pick instead. What a terrible front office

    • @Zenigundam
      @Zenigundam 10 днів тому +14

      People should be mad at the pick. Penix was exposed numerous times in his own conference. He wasn't good enough to win at Indiana; Washington just happened to have a more talented team than the rest of its conference. When Penix had to play an NFL caliber defense in the national championship game, he proved that he couldn't do it.

    It's not a mistake it just doesn't make sense. Why pay Cousins and enter "win now" mode, to use a top 10 pick on a player you don't intend to play. It might turn out great as a long term move, but it doesn't help you in the short term.

    • @blacklac100

      Only issue that don't make sense is they paying cousins 100 million guarantee for the next 3 years and draft a 24yrs old qb. If he doesn't play for 3 years they gonna have to pay Pitts, Robinson, etc so it's kinda strange move

    • @SportsSpeak73
      @SportsSpeak73 10 днів тому +13

      @blacklac100 the problem is that they aren't good enough to be on the 2 timelines plan. They're barely good enough to be on one timeline. You don't get Cousins unless you want to win now which is fine, but then they hindered their ability to do that by not improving the team right now. It's mixed messaging if nothing else

      The biggest thing about this idiocy is that if they are truly are in "win now" mode, then they would've gone and got pieces for spots they need more.

    The Falcons have a possible out on Cousins in 2026. If they take that out, Penix will be 27 when he is the starter. He will have at most three years left on a rookie contract assuming they pick his fifth year up. I don’t think the QB pick is a terrible idea to sit for a couple of years. He isn't a raw QB, he played in a pro style offence and he's without a doubt the best pocket passer in this draft. He's not gonna go through crazy development by sitting behind a QB (he ain't Jordan Love, Patrick Mahomes, Trey Lance etc..) he's already pretty refined and he'll get better by playing games.

    Falcons about to rule the NFC South for next 7-10 seasons.
    1. They will have no QB concern for at least 5 years. So now all their focus can be on upgrading defense & resigning offensive talent.
    2. Look at QBs for other NFC South teams, Bryce for Panthers? Baker for Bucs? Carr for Saints?
    3. Falcons offense is gonna be top 10 with Kirk then Penix, so if Morris can get the D to be top 15, they will win 10+ games every year.
    4. With Penix possibly starting after 3 seasons, he won't demand max contract $$$. He will probably get $45 mil/ season contract after rookie deal rather than $60 mil. Might go with a Cousins type contract, 4 yr/ $180 mil/ fully guaranteed.

    I need people to really think about this: why not double down at the game’s most valuable position? Quarterbacks are hard to secure. Having too many is better than not having enough. If Cousins returns to previous form, the Falcons won’t have to rush Penix’s development. On the other hand, if Cousins fails to recover as planned, the Falcons suddenly have an insurance policy. Moreover, the way these deals are now, with the constant increase of the salary cap, the guaranteed money is going to get higher. That is what matters on the deal, not the years.

A lot of people will disagree with this next statement, but I don't care. Michael Penix was the best QB in this class and he will prove that when his number gets called. You guys got a future HoFer. Take care of my guy. We'll miss him in Washington. But he went to a team that will give him an opportunity to shine sooner than later. I don't see Cousins lasting 2 full years. I think he'll get injured unfortunately for him. But it won't be unfortunate for Atlanta because Penix will work every day and he'll be prepared to drop dimes to Pitts and that receiving core and when that happens then the best version of Bijon will come out. You guys are set for the next dozen years at least. Watching Penix for the last 2 years was absolutely amazing. The young man is built to succeed, and he doesn't know anything about failure. That's a foreign word to him. He's a winner and IMO he is the true steal of the draft.

    (1) Defense is not a priority of ANY KIND in the NFL.
    (2) Green Bay has shown when you have stability at the QB position... you draft for the franchise when you have an opportunity.
    (3) Kirk Cousin was notified when he got that contract. He is a player, not an owner.
    (4) Penix Jr. Could be the real deal if he has time to fully heal, learn, and prepare to be the qb of the future in a league that heavily penalizes defense for being physical and he will have a ready made offense in place when he takes the keys...
    This could be a GENNIUS move.
