I don’t see it I really don’t. Signing Kirk Cousins is a win now move, drafting Penix is a rebuilding move. They’re contradictory strategies. If you wanna win now sign the QB and draft some defense. If you’re rebuilding then draft a QB and save your cap space. Dan said the Falcons had the 11th best defense as if that’s really good and can’t possibly be improved on. Imagine if you draft an impact defender and that becomes a top 10 defense, and you’ve got Cousins to spread the ball out to the weapons you already drafted. That would be a logical strategy.
I loved Penix predraft, thought he should be QB3 despite the injuries. This was a really smart move. They get to ride the boat this year and see what else needs to be added. Year 2 if Kirk is playing well you could have an even better roster and if Penix takes over year 3/4 at that point they’ve established a winning culture and added pieces for him.
If thats how you see it then you must be a person that loves to flush money down the toilet because thats what the falcons are doing. Like Unc said, 100mill is a lot of money for a bridge qb. Coulve gotten a savy vet to actually show Penix the ropes instead of having someone who is competing against him
If Penix takes over year 3/4 they’re still gonna have a ton of dead cap left over from Cousins contract. By the way they structured his contract they don’t even get that much cap relief if they trade him.
Well there was over 60 quarterbacks that had to play last season in the NFL. It was so bad even old man Flacco return to the starting line up. This where "Money Ball" comes in, the current system was setup for a 12 game season not a 17 game season. I think there is a realization by GM's around the league that you need to have two starting quarterback just in case.
Lmao Receiver ??? Defensive player when we was 11th last year and doubled our sacks with maybe the worst offense in the NFL last year. In reality the falcons got there need in the first round and there need going defense for the next 3 rounds

Jordan Love & Green Bay is a great example of knowing what you have is almost done and you’re ready for the future Instead of most orgs are not ready or will never recover 5+ years down the line.
Jordan Love is one year younger than Penix... It's not like Penix was some undercooked 21 year old that needed 2 years of development time underneath one of the best QB's of all time. You're paying Kirk Cousins at least 100million to be a bridge QB, instead of spending that salary elsewere and hoping that Penix actually is your guy and contending while he's on his rookie contract or competing with Kirk with better pieces. Now you gotta wait at least 2 years before you can compete for the SB if the pieces around Kirk aren't enough, then you only have 3 years of having a cheap franchise QB (if Penix works out). Thank you. That’s the crux of the issue. People arguing about the player, the talent isn’t the question. It’s having a luxury player that won’t see the field, and the advantage of his cheap contract goes down the toilet when you only use him for a year two.

No look at Kirk Cousins contract, his guaranteed money is only for two years. Which means means you only have a two year contract. This forces the owner and GM to start looking for a college quarterback in two years. But assuming that Kirk Cousins stay healthy and wins 10 games each season in a weak AFC South division the Atlanta Falcons would be drafting in the 22 to 26 position of the first around draft. That position will not get you a top 1st round draft pick at quarterback coming out of college. You would have to overdraft a bad 2nd round draft pick in the late 1st round, and hope he can be a starter for you in Atlanta.
Just remember 2nd round quarterback have noticeable problems. What problems you ask? If Cousins doesn’t play well then signing him was a bad move. With Kirk they have a team rn that is favorite to win the division (let me remind you they went 7-10 last year when their QBs had more turnovers than the offense scored TDs)...and they went and got their favorite QB of the draft to develop behind Kirk and be ready to compete when his number is called. Plus, 72% of the teams last year were forced to play their backup QB bc of an injury or poor play...and with Kirk coming off a complete achilles tear, it's smart to have a quality backup...why did they give Kirk that money? Cause they do believe he can carry this team to the playoffs...why did they draft Penix? Bc they are likely not going to have another 1st round pick for the next 2-3 years bc of the tampering, rn is their best chance to get a QB.
It's a stupid pick. The thing that the coach is forgetting is that, if he doesn't win in the next two to three years. It won't matter who the qb is! Because he won't be the coach. You don't draft for the future. You draft to win now! Drafting a qb WHEN you signed a proven qb is stupid. I would say that the coach will probably not see penix play, because he won't be the coach. So how smart of a pick is it now!
Falcons already know two things, Cousins will only be there for 2 years and they will lose picks for tampering. They had to pull the trigger on Pennix. It will work out fine.

Arthur Blank should hire Terry Fontano's replacement so they're ready to win now later 😂
To short, throws funny, have bad arm strength, to slow can't scramble, doesn't have good timing, etc. So this is a way to make sure that you have a solid back up.
It’s only a 2 year deal

It's a stupid pick. The thing that the coach is forgetting is that, if he doesn't win in the next two to three years. It won't matter who the qb is! Because he won't be the coach. You don't draft for the future. You draft to win now! Drafting a qb WHEN you signed a proven qb is stupid. I would say that the coach will probably not see penix play, because he won't be the coach. So how smart of a pick is it now!
Falcons already know two things, Cousins will only be there for 2 years and they will lose picks for tampering. They had to pull the trigger on Pennix. It will work out fine.
