After over 15 years, we'll finally get the next full installment of the Psychonauts franchise with Psychonauts 2, releasing on August 25, 2021. In preparation, let's take a look back through the original Psychonauts, as well as the VR sequel, Rhombus of Ruin, to find out where the story stands when we pick back up with Raz in the new title!

she does have a nose, but it's so squach you don't notice it much.

I just noticed that Raz has five fingers whereas the other characters have three to four, and rarely five. It’s a weird character design but really unique.
Raz is overall one of the most human looking characters I think its completely intentional

Not going to lie I don't think I've ever understood this story so well and I played it three different times. I never found all the mental vaults I didn't know those back stories to some of the psychonauts. Even though it sounds absolutely crazy to say out loud, totally love the story!
This whole game is absolutely insane but it's so good. The game series (cause yes it is 100% a series) has that perfect 00's cartoon charm and cheese.
The whole game is entirely well put together from a plotting perspective. Fun fact (I only just learned through my most recent 100% play through) you know how Dogen is talking to the squirrels at the start of the game, and thinks they’re pressuring him to kill everyone? After you return Dogen’s brain and find him in camp to talk with him again he mentions that the squirrels were saying something to the effect of “the small guy is going to kill everybody”, he took it as they were telling him he was going to do this while they were ACTUALLY talking about Oleander! Poor squirrels.
The whole game is entirely well put together from a plotting perspective. Notice how dr lobotomy has 1 green eye and 1 red for each parent.
It's not the biggest thing but when you add them all up the details show a ton of love and care. The game is so devilishly clever.
and also his father's suit is torn up where his heart should be, implying that he's heartless
WHOA!! I've watched playthroughs of Rhombus of Ruin half a dozen times, but I NEVER saw that blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment with the overhead compartment. I guess this explains how he ended up at Psychonauts HQ for the sequel!

The sentence "I am the Milkman my milk is delicious" is now my favorite sentence.
Very well done, this was exactly what I was hoping to find before starting up Psychonauts 2. Not too wordy, still detailed and clear, little bit of humor tossed in as well, and the well placed use of gameplay and cutscene clips.

I was so confused about these plot details that kept getting dropped from Rhombus of Ruin. I'd heard it was only a tie-in spinoff and I don't own VR so I can't play it anyway. It's a shame they put so much plot-important stuff in such an inaccessible title. It takes away from the second game a little bit.
It is mistakenly called a spinoff but its not, it's a direct continuation of the main story. You can watch it all on UA-cam if you do not have VR.
@@SimplexPL Being able to watch it on youtube isn't the best advertisement though. The games should stand on their own
@@BardBoss64 Any game can be watched on UA-cam. Rhombus of Ruin totally stands on it own, I finished it twice.
Psychonauts went to the Kingdom Hearts school of putting relevant plot in obscure side games
@@theonegoldengryphon That game is easily available on PS4 and on PC, so not that obscure. At least not to Psychonauts fans who follow gaming news.

I went into Psychonauts 2 a few days ago without having ever played the first. I was told I could easily follow along, no need to do any research on the first game. Yea, I was mighty confused after the intro of Psychonauts 2 and almost didn't continue. After watching this video I fully understand and grasp what is going on after the intro and the fun factor for the game just went up tenfold. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Really appreciate it!

The VR game is a nice epilogue, for a 2$ games on sales
It's been 16 years since I played the first one, so thank you for the refresher as I remember my teen years and am starting a second installment of this masterpiece =)
I'm astonished that the entire franchise takes place over the course of a few days, a week at the very most.

I remember getting this game on the original XBox and falling in love with it right away. It's so weird, quirky, and just plan fun to play. I eventually got it on Steam as well. This was such a great game. I can't remember if it didn't get the love back then that it gets now and it was a shame. I first read about it in an XBox Magazine review. Just the strange environments, the weirdness of it all, puts this on a level that I haven't seen since. And the game still holds its own today and hasn't really age much. And so much to explore and find.
How’d you get the cutscenes to appear in such high definition? My cutscenes are always much grainier :/

The one retcon I've noticed so far following the first game is just Raz no longer wearing the cool new outfit he got and you have to go through the second game's intro to get it again.
I remember when I first found milla's room. Shit is so creepy and heartbreaking

This game was way ahead of its time. Never played it but love the story and the idea of healing other's minds.
I really appreciate this recap, I got Psychonauts 2 and started playing it but felt a little lost. It had been many years since I played the original so I booted that up to refresh my memory but still had questions on how we got from the ending of 1 to the beginning of 2. I didn't even realize there was a VR game with fairly crucial story, plus I actually didn't pay too much attention to all the memory vaults so this vid really helped iron out the details. Looking forward to going through 2 now!

I honestly barely remember beating this, i remembered the tank boss. So I beat it at one point and another it jumped my brain in another
This was really helpful! I don’t own a ps4 or any sort of vr headset so I couldn’t play rombus of ruin, so having the story explained really helped!
this explores psychology in a very interesting way and id love to see the characters for therapy for my daddy issues

I absolutely love psychonauts. It handles generally mature and dark themes like trauma, addiction, and mental illness with such deep understanding and whimsicality. It's exactly what they said at the start of psychonauts 2, it is essentially a game about self healing and acceptance. I really hope they make the 3rd game soon.
I had to come here to finish up the story since I lost my save on PC right after clearing the Napoleon level. Now, I can play the second game without going through the entire first game again lol

Microsoft's evil?
I'm all for bashing Microsoft for buying Double Fine games and limiting the capabilities for everything but the Series S/X, but it's more of a business thing than an actual evil thing.
I mean microsofts the only reason we get to play pn2 at all

All of psychonauts takes place over 2 days
First night and day is psychonauts 1, day 2 is rhombus of ruin, and day 2 continued and night 2 is psychonauts 2, I would claim raz as one of the best of the agency
but he takes so fuggin long in other peoples minds. The others are just master speedrunners.

Hate to be the red shirt nerd in the room but they did a sort of retcon in Rhombus Ruin. As in Psychonauts Raz couldn't enter Dr Loboto's mind specifically because of the showering cap, when you try it bounce back and that point this out. But there they did just that in Rhombus Ruin.
