  • Joshua Jones from Detroit, Michigan is the "perfect storm" of natural talent. Jones got an early start playing the drums, understands how hard it is to get a job as a percussionist, and has an unyielding dedication to perfect his skills. Those four elements collide in this episode of Uncharted and capture him on the precipice of landing a job in one of the most exclusive artistic clubs in the world.

    Being a percussionist:
    Before joining orchestra: Intense, tiring practice across multiple instruments for years.
    Being in an orchestra: Counting bar rests until you have 1 bass-drum note.

      Requirements for being a percussionist:
      1. Have a truck to carry your massive instruments around with you.
      2. Have unlimited money. (You need lots of money to buy instruments your boss needs in the piece)
      3. Sit around and do nothing.
      Jk you need to PRACTICE. I don't play percussion, but I have problems with counting quadruplets, quintuplets, and sextuplets all in one piece. Messes with my mind a bit. And that's not all there is to percussion. Damn, percussion is hard.

    Joshua Jones is probably practicing right now. The 24-year-old aspiring percussionist and Chicago native - with an almost obsessive attitude toward getting better at his craft - has spent years filling any downtime he can find with stick control exercises. It’s the kind of devotion that has no off switch...Except maybe UA-cam.

    You know, you see a lot of videos and it's always the same thing. Someone has a big dream and supposedly no shot, but works at it and achieves their dream and it's all very cliche nowadays, but this video is one of the few videos I've watched in the last few years that actually inspires me to go out and do something. It might just be because I enjoy percussion and the other videos out there don't appeal to my interests, or maybe because of how interesting of an approach this video takes to showing the lifestyle of someone like Joshua. Either way I am really happy for him and I hope Joshua makes it out there because as we all know, technology is destroying fine arts and with synthesizers, even movies are beginning to stop hiring actual people to play an instrument so if you want to make a career in music, you have to make it in a professional orchestra, or settle as a music teacher. So go Joshua! Make the musical community proud!

    I Don’t necessarily agree with his consensus that every second you’re not practicing you’re wasting time this is Patently not true!
    You’re forgetting that the muscles in your arms, hands, wrists and fingers need to have a period of rest between the practice. So that they can reset them selves so that they can how can I say this: the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, all need to be able to adjust, and to reset them selves to the previous practice periods, actual practicing triggers, the development and the-rest periods, between the actual practicing triggers the development of the muscles of the arm, hands and fingers, etc. I have been playing drums for the last 65 years and about 30 years ago. I finally became hip to the fact that taking one day off a week and not touching even a single drumstick or even thinking about DRUMS or PERCUSSION my mind, and my body could reprogram them selves reset themselves so that when I resumed practice on the next day, my chops due to the rest of the previous day were automatically conditioned and relaxed enough from the day of rest to go onto the next level of development. This is a physiological fact! By practicing every second of every day, all you’re going to get is eventually carpal tunnel syndrome, stiff and overworked chops, and maybe a touch of bursitis and arthritis as well, but to each his own what can I tell you?!
    Of course it’s true when you’re actually practicing and or performing, you should be throwing 111% of your existence into it but then those periods of rest in between the “playing”
    You should just let it all go just release it all and when you come back the next day or the next session, you’ll be refreshed mentally as well as physiologically that’s a fact and you can dispute it all you want but it’s still a physiological fact make of it what you will

    I don't really get that clapping exercise-- it's not exercising the muscles you use for drumming- radial ulnar action is the normal drumming movement rotating the lower arm- for larger movement the shoulders are involved and for smaller movement the fingers of course- but that fast patting action is not really used in drumming and in fact may be not so great for the muscles--- I wonder who recommends this stuff??

    • @arQerlovesgigibear
      @arQerlovesgigibear 7 років тому +1

      well sure it does. it's working your extensors. you don't really wanna finger/squeeze bottle your strokes on the keyboard. and the clapping would be analogous to playing double stops with the goal of being symmetrical. just try it for a month and see what it does for you. couldn't hurt and could only help.

    • @ambroulard
      @ambroulard 7 років тому

      ?? Well it sure does what-? what does it sure does-?- again these are not the muscles used for drumming- and your assertion that this can't hurt anything is not a position well taken or thought out.

    • @arQerlovesgigibear
      @arQerlovesgigibear 7 років тому

      you don't use your extensors? okay. you probably can't find middle c on the marimba either. sheesh. so negative and ignorant.

    • @Sendrummazing

      M. M. It works your fingers, which is important for things such as the finger technique for snare

    • @ambroulard
      @ambroulard 7 років тому +1

      sawyer sendelbach But it doesn't work the fingers at all--- it's working the wrists- and in the wrong direction- it's not radial-ulnar movement which is the suggested movement for drumming through the wrists--- it's more like the movement people use when working on their computers which as you should know does harm, repetitive motion injury is common so through an exercise like this you can injure yourself more quickly--- no thanks.
