Having a spoon with you in any situation is always a good idea even if you are just stopping for a small tub of ice cream or eating out of a can of tuna etc. It's especially useful when you are bushcrafting or practicing your survival skills. This is a project that is easily made and very durable. You can also re-purpose items for this project but you need to make sure that the materials are stainless steel, not galvanized. Also for further information about the use of JB Weld on food items, make sure and watch past the 10 minute mark as I detail what I learned about this type of epoxy. Thanks for watching and please leave your comments in the comment section below!
I know several people, my Dad included who have used jb weld to help hold teeth in. My dad jb welded a cap back on in his 20s. He's 75 now and very healthy. Nice vid! Thanks!
Pro tip: JB Weld is sold in 5 gallon buckets and can be used to make a cast for a broken arm or leg. When the bone is healed you can use this spoon to cut off the cast.
I really like this one! It's actually quite practical and probably the most compact that a utensil set can possibly be made. I will probably make both a spoon and fork version. If you really wanted to you could also make a small spatula and put all 3 on a single ring to carry them and have a super compact cooking and eating utensil set.
hammer the cut fork flat to use as a spear tip/gig also.. great video James! i love the hobo stuff. I have made and used a few stoves and pots, a hobo reel and so on, im gathering footage to make a channel of my adventures
My $13 walmart multitool folding tableware has six different heads, including fork, spoon, big knife, small knife, can & bottle opener also a corkscrew wine bottle opener. It opens so the knife is in one hand and the fork in the other, I have one in every truck and backpack..
What a great hack. Ive previously really enjoyed your Stanley Cookset hacks. With this one, if you pushed the Steel bit with the screw thread into the end of a telescopic aerial, you could have a regular length spoon that turns into an extra long spoon.
James ... Ingenious idea; better video!!!!! I will be adding this to my mess kit and EDC kit. Me and mine wish you and yours all things great and good!!!! Take care, be safe, all my best and God bless!!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 🤠🐩👍🖖
i used jb weld to make a damper for my woodstove flue last night i made the damper out of a bean tin lid and a tent peg saved me 14 bucks and i jb welded the rain stop to the pipe its awesome.
Wow! This is such a great idea! it could work for almost any silverware given some work. Could you imagine if this was a normal thing in history? Almost like a wooden axe where you can replace the handle, man this is a great idea
Great idea man really cool, can't go wrong having one. For the record let me add. When screwing the nut onto the spoon, if going to hook on a key ring, keep in mind how you want the spoon to ride against your leg. Thanks for another creative video idea.
Great gift idea as well, under $5. I want to give one of these to each of my outdoorsy kids and grandkids. Thanks! Old spoons are available at the thrift store for pennies as well.
Awesome this can be done for both fork and spoon. I need to stop watching your videos. I am getting to many projects ideas stacked up. But am I going to stop??? Absolutely not, going to keep watching and start making what I can. Lol thanks
I have actually used JB Weld to repair old tobacco pipes that were damaged. And the putty they make too. Sometimes I buy a lot of old pipes from an estate sale. And some are seemingly useless. Until I fix them creatively.
When I saw the beginning of this video, I actually thought it looked a bit naff (a bit useless, unnecessary item), a gimmick. After viewing all the way through, I have done a full 180. What a really useful piece of kit, I didn’t realise, at first, the handle can be a piece of twig you find, I thought it was a permanent piece you made and carried separately, something you’d probably forget to take with you, or lose. Brilliant, I shall be making one of these!😁🤣😂. What a brilliant bit of kit!!!😁😁
Jim Dandy of an idea. True story... We were at a cookout one-day and the hosts ran out of utensils. That's the day I bought a set of titanium spooks to keep in the truck.
Liking the zipper pull idea.. I seldom carry keys when out and about I kind of have a slight case of 'misplacing' things..lol Keys aren't something I want to lose..
That's a neat invention! I can't help thinking that you could drill the key-ring hole closer to the spoon so that it goes through the spoon as well, helping to lock the spoon into the shank, and leaving the threads in the shank open for the stick without needing to remove the key-ring.
That's pretty neat James 👌 😀 It's little things like that that we don't think about doing or having with us because we're in NYC but right now the way things are I'm definitely gonna do one and keep it on my key chain . So thank you for sharing idea .
Nice and easy project. It's nice that the link can be saved after removing the threaded nut or lug. The nut is still a bit short to use as a handle. I was wondering if there isn't some tubing, readily available, that can be threaded to use as a screw on handle. Threaded rod or a long bolt might be an option. Maybe a plastic rod might be preferred. Possibly the handle of an old used up toothbrush could serve.
I bet you could use a stainless-steel bolt of a matching size to build a handle from, or use a tap-and-die set to add threads onto, say, an aluminium or stainless nail of the right size (say, one of those huge aluminium nails used for hanging gutters....) It's probably not difficult to find a plastic rod that would work for a handle, and I don't see why an old toothbrush handle as you suggest wouldn't fit that bill just fine as well! Why bother with a dedicated handle? The handle could be used for other screw-on projects: a fork, spatula, or butter-knife are some obvious possibilities, but I'm sure you could use the same screw-on shank technique to build all sorts of screw-on survival tools with, and hang them all from the same key-chain to keep them neat and organized. I bet a screw-on alligator clip might come in handy, for example... you could probably also make a compact pair of screw-on scissors by fitting one of those screw-on-shanks to a sawed-down pair of scissors.... you could make a handle from a stick found in the field to use with any of these tools, but keeping a dedicated reusable handle with the set is a nice convenience!
That was very innovative. Looking forward to making one. You kind of remind me of the Oxy Clean guy on that commercial a few years back! 🤣 Thanks for sharing your ideas! 😊
When I made this, I took a dremel cut off tool and cut slits into the open end of the spoon,(about1/4”) essentially, turning this into a spork..”Works for me”

This is probably one of, if not the best DIY mods I have seen yet. I get aggravated when a long spoon or fork won't fit in a mess kit and this is perfect. The other benefit is it's less weight without the long steel handle. I got some JB Weld in the tool box and a TS a couple miles away and some old spoons and forks laying around, I know what I'm going to do this week. Will make for great (cheap) gifts too while having fun making them. Thanks for sharing.
Cool idea and execution, looks stylish as well. I have some metal chop sticks and I was wondering wether I could use a chop stick as a handle, could still use as chop sticks but also become a long spoon or fork when required.

Yes, you can do that. However, and this is just a personal thing, I don't like sporks. I eat a lot of soups and stews when I'm in the backcountry and the spoon won't hold as much when there are slots in it. Also, I can just whittle a sharp stick or carve a forked stick into a fork if I wish. Still, a good question and thank you for watching the video and for commenting!
@@WayPointSurvival thanks for the reply and that makes perfect sense. Well, I guess you could use to spoons, leave one as a spoon and make the other one a spork. Great idea, you can do the same with a fork, you would have to cover the fork with lets say a ranger ban so no holes are made by the fork.
Yes. Or just wrap it with duct tape or cling wrap. Of course, the duct tape would leave a residue.
Nice and easy project. It's nice that the link can be saved after removing the threaded nut or lug. The nut is still a bit short to use as a handle.
