  • Short documentary I made which describes possible links between Michael Jackson's music and Sonic 3.
    **NOTES**
    1) In 2019 UA-cam muted clips of audio in this video and in doing so also reduced video quality to 240p. The original untouched version has been uploaded to the Internet Archive for preservation: archive.org/details/michael_j...
    2) You can hear a better comparison between the Sonic 3 Ending Credits and the Stranger in Moscow Instrumental here:
    qjimbo.com/youtube/S3MJ-Sonic3...
    3) An actual audio sample of "Jam!" plays at the climax of the Jam part of Carnival Night Zone. Sampled audio from the Michael Jackson song is stored in the Sonic 3 ROM file (so this is more than just a musical similarity.)
    qjimbo.com/youtube/S3MJ-Sonic3...
    4) It now appears Sonic 3 and Knuckles Collection on PC did not have it's music "replaced", but instead features what was originally composed by the SEGA's music team for Sonic 3 prior to the involvement of Michael Jackson's team. We learned this when a prototype Genesis/Megadrive version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from November 1993 was discovered that features the same music as the PC version.
    hiddenpalace.org/Sonic_the_He...
    5) In the December 2009 issue of Black & White Magazine, Brad Buxer (credited at the end of Sonic 3) confirmed that Stranger in Moscow and the Sonic 3 Credits use the same chords that both he and Michael Jackson composed together.
    info.sonicretro.org/Brad_Buxe...
    6) Ice Cap Zone is a reworked version of a song called "Hard Times" written by Brad Buxer for a band he was keyboardist in called "The Jetzons".
    • The Jetzons - Hard Times
    7) The chord charts shown in this video are incorrect, please disregard them(!)
    This description was last updated February 22nd, 2023.

    **ORIGINAL RELEASE DESCRIPTION**
    Short documentary I made which describes possible links between Michael Jackson's music and Sonic 3.
    **UPDATED SHORTLY AFTER RELEASE DESCRIPTION**
    This Documentary isn't just random comparisons, listen to the start. Roger Hector, who ran SEGA's Technical Institute said Michael was planned to work on it. We have asked SEGA because HE WORKED FOR SEGA! Please take note of this before accusing the documentary of making un-validated claims.
    Since this documentary was made, there have been numerous discoveries showing that most of the people featured in the credits list worked with Michael Jackson at some stage.
    Also I have had numerous requests for the Who Is It vs Ice Cap mix. The clip is just 21seconds however you can download it here:

    The Ice Cap Zone melody was actually a track that Brad Buxor slipped in from his former band, the Jetzons', song called, "Hard Times". Check out the song and compare. It recently surfaced on UA-cam as a track that never saw the light of day until just recently. Brad is the only link between the Jetzons and Sonic 3.

      I've listened to Hard Times and some of it to me doesn't sound like IceCap Zone. I'm not dismissing that IceCap and Hard Times aren't the same but listening to IceCap once again after the Hard Times discovery, I hear both that song and Smooth Criminal, especially that Smooth Criminal had already been synthesised in Moonwalker.

    Yesterday, a prototype of Sonic 3 was uncovered. The prototype had the same music in Sonic 3 PC on genisis hardware of course. My theory is the PC port was developed exactly along side Sonic 3 for genisis. Mid-way during development, Micheal Jackson was brought on board and added his own compositions. By the time MJ added his music, it was too late to create a new version for the Sonic and Knuckles Collection. That is the true resoning why the Sonic and Knuckles Collection has different music. Really, Sonic 3 has the different music. Hope this was useful

      I doubt the two were developed side by side. Sega took a hiatus from PC in the early 90s during the success of the Genesis and wouldn't dive back into it until the Saturn started struggling.

      @adib I think it was wrong because I think the original soundtrack had never anything to do with the pc version while it was created.It was meant to be the original soundtrack for sonic 3 or a placeholder for Michael’s soundtrack. The original soundtrack was given because the didn’t had the rights for michael’s music.

      Sometimes musicians can have song in the pipelines for years, Stranger in Moscow could have been revised, rearranged and rewritten many times and when Michael help compose the music for Sonic 3,, he used some inspiration from Stranger in it, he may not have known what zone it was going to be assigned to at the time, and that was probably decided after he stopped being associated with the project..

    I'm 99% certain that "Remember the Time" was used a lot aswell, specifically for sound effects in the game such as the lift in Launch Base, and Carnival Night Zone stuff. The sounds are almost identical.
    In fact, I'd be willing to bet that most of the "Dangerous" album ended up in Sonic 3 in some way, shape or form.
    In terms of music, Launch Base sounds a bit like "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' too, in terms of chord progression.
    Blood on the Dancefloor is the original Knuckles Theme from Sonic 3. It was changed for Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3. The same goes for the original Act 1 Boss Theme (which is also Blood on the Dancefloor)
    I've been doing a lot of digging and there's far more of MJ's music in Sonic 3 than people realise.

    "We here at SEGA were very sad to hear about the passing of Michael Jackson. He was a true music legend whose songs touched each of us at some point in our lives. We are proud to have worked with him and included his music in some of our most well-remembered gameS and are sure that his genius will live on through his great body of work. We have no doubt that future generations will be moonwalking to all his greatest hits."

    As a composer myself I can say that many chord structures can be found in multiple songs. E.G. The chords Am, F, G, Em can be found in lots of songs such as Ice Cap Zone and Savage Garden's chorus To The Moon And Back & the verse is the same as J-Lo's Waiting For Tonight chords. These examples are everywhere.

    Actually, I highly doubt the tracks were removed from the PC version for legal reasons. The Sega Genesis uses an FM chip called the OPN. The PC used an OPL chip, most often the OPL3. OPN chips can play sampled sounds along with the music, but OPL3 chips cannot. It is far more likely that the tracks were changed for the PC version because they were incapable of being played on it.
    Also worthy of note, in the Sonic & Knuckles collection, Hydrocity Act 1, which is clearly Michael Jackson's style of music, is still there.
    I think the reason the tracks were replaced is simply because Michael insisted on using samples. If it was a legal reason, they wouldn't have been released on the Genesis to begin with.

    • @dissident93
      @dissident93 9 років тому +1

      NAB622 the chip used in the Genesis is the OPN2, secondly, Hydrocity Zone wasn't composed by MJ, neither was Marble Garden Zone (composed by Miyoko Takaoka, confirmed via twitter)
      Maybe that's also the case, but that just gives more evidence that the sample heavy tracks were from MJ's team, I don't see how it discredits him at all. Not to mention PC's by 1997 were also using General Midi, so they didn't have to play back in FM. Also, the MIDIs themselves aren't actually the same from the Genesis. While they are mostly accurate, some note errors exist in songs, such as Angel Island.
      So in my opinion, the guys who implemented the MIDIs into the PC version (Shigeaki Irie, Masaaki Nishizawa, and Goro Takahashi, none of them SEGA employees) either didn't have legal rights to the tracks, or they were simply too lazy to remove/add generic replacement for the samples. Which sounds more likely to you?

  • @Qjimbo
    @Qjimbo  15 років тому +4

    While I can understand how somebody could come to that conclusion if they just took the comparisons, this video doesn't simply highlight those.
    How could this simply be an internet rumor if Roger Hector himself, the man in charge at STI while Sonic 3 was being developed there, stated clearly that Michael Jackson was brought in to write the music?
    Why is it that 90% the people in the credits of Sonic 3 have worked with MJ at some point, such as Brad Buxer?
    This is more than a rumour.

A startling fact, is that Brad Buxer was also Michael Jackson's Keyboardist and top guy in planning how the music would be played in his concerts. Yet another comment telling you how this was one of my favorite videos in the days of early UA-cam, 6th or 7th grade for me. I remember watching this on my dads laptop in his room. ironically, I was actually obsessed with Michael Jackson at the time and downloading all his music; and sonic was my favorite video game franchise since childhood. most of my friends thought it was boring or weird but it was very interesting and well narrated (:
    it's so hard to find old UA-cam videos now! maybe there is some filter on the desktop site to sort by year but this one slipped away from me until the other week.

      Thanks for sharing your story and glad you found it! Those old trending videos from way back then have sort of been lost to time, even if they are still technically on YT.

      @@Qjimbo yeah it's crazy seeing that when I have these memories and can't find videos I watched a hundred times.
      did you see the whole Sonic Origins controversy as well as the Sonic 3 Beta from a few years back?

    • @Qjimbo
      @Qjimbo  2 роки тому +2

      @@tylerd1297 Yep, saw the beta, that really helped to clarify things. The Origins issue kind of an inevitable outcome unfortunately, it is remarkable how this whole thing persists to this day.

    i love this video, but the "hard times jetzons" song has break the idea that i have of the ice cap zone song origin...
    if looks that mj works along his comrade musician, for remake a little that song that this guy created in that unreleased 1982 song ... as i read in that youtube hard times song comments and also in the net.
    anyway... is really really interesting! ;)
    and i love that hard times song!. hehe
    ice cap zone was my favourite sonic 3 melody, along with the credits song that finally become into strangers in moscow years after the sonic 3 game release.
    greetings ;)

    I think I heard that tune he used for "stranger in moscow" (the first basic melody) in some other stuff before he even used it in that song OR the game. That same key too. Instruments. Everything.

    For my University course, our group were discussing video game music and how some early VGM were covers of already existing songs. I told the lecturer about this video and he used it for the other group.
    So congratulations on having this as a mildly academic source, I guess.

    I noticed in completing Sonic 3 i slowed the soundtrack down as the credits played and it sounds virtually Identical to this, if you speed up this song it sounds like stranger moscow to a degree

    This is really interesting to me, I have been a hardcore sonic fan since I was a kid and the sonic 3 music I always stuck out in my head. The music is so different from any other game's music for its time if you go back and play it. Those "faint shouts" I always heard puzzled me. What a strange thing to put into a game, I always thought. But that is kind of like MJ's signature thing. I am glad I saw this, now I understand why the music in the game is crazy. Cause it was mj inspired :D

    I'd day Carnival Night is bang on especially that it has a sample taken directly from Jam by MJ. IceCap which is said to be Who Is It, which it isn't because it's a version of part of Smooth Criminal, can be heard even better on Sonic Retro because they have a page on MJ and Sonic 3. Launch Base I believe to be an original composition for the game, the same with the Competition Menu, S3 Credits are Stranger in Moscow, and Knuckles' Theme and Miniboss are based on the New Jack Swing in MJ's songs

  • @Jami393
    @Jami393 11 років тому

    Your right with your info there, and some other chords only found in Smooth Criminal, can be heard in IceCap Zone's tracks.
