Yes, I have opened cans with my Germany Army pocketknife. It wors as it is just as if you were using one of the hook or beak type can openers. It works much better than you think it will.
I ordered mine on eBay from the MFH manufacturer. I'd love to have one from Victorinox but they're hard to get in this day and age. I only paid $17 for it but I hear that's the market price. I'm excited to open a can with it when it finally arrives. Nice review, thanks.
You're right the Victorinox ones are hard to get hold of nowadays. There are surplus online shops in Europe selling them for about the same price but they don't say which brand you'll get, it's luck of the draw, so chances of getting a Vic are slim.
Say Heah, Nice, Yeah, I like military issie tools. But I also like my Vic. Rangergrip 78, It also had a long main blade. The steel is prolly just as good as your German Issue GAK. Infact my Rangergrip serves me well in many ways. Thanx You for sharing,,,.
A very beautiful piece to add to your collection, congratulations I an very jealous, really wish I could get my hands on 1, both the 1985 and 2003 OH GAK, just for the sheer lovely design of it, all I would keep this 1 with me at all times and have the 2003 model on standby when going hiking along with a Ka-Bar, the perfect combo.
I have read that Victorinox supplied the componant parts and then companies where contracted to assemble them, but I have not researched it so cant be 100% that is the case but it would be a viable reason for their logo being on the blade.Nice review.
I think the other civilian version was called the Mauser after the rifle manufacturers, very similar, but with another blade. Have the same model as yourself with the saw blade cover. The scales are very tough and grippy and the blade a nice size.
@@jamespenson8912 Yes, my Victorinox GAK has been semi retired as they're getting hard to replace, not expensive if you can find them but finding them is the trick. Have another by a German maker (CCM), not as nicely made but still good that gets the use. I'd definitely look after a Mauser if I had one, they're impossible to find these days!
Wife bought me one just today 21/09 2024 . Has the saw guard and was £20 . Small antique shop find . ( she’s very well trained ) 😂
Great post

The civilian version was the Safari Trooper. It also came in red nylon scales, aside from stag scales in limited editions.
It fits nice in you collection! Very good and informative review. cheers, Bart
Thank you for the kind words!
A great knife for any pack, or kit.

Thank you. That sounds entirely possible.
Where di you find this lovely piece!?

All correct. I have a Mauser I got in the 80s, but I carry a GAK daily. Great knives!
