Ow1 release was some of the best times I had in gaming. It was fresh and exciting, I was super addicted. I stopped playing during goats, but returned shortly after the meta switched. I then met someone I fell in love with who just happened to love overwatch and was the same rank as me! We would sit side by side and play together all morning and night. Some of my fondest memories in any game ever.
My favorite part of OW2 is how they deleted the game I paid for and replaced it with something I didn't ask for or want.
They didn't keep OW1 because they knew no one would play the absolute piece of dog shit OW2 turned into.
blizzard did the same thing to warcraft3 but worse.

The programmers are replaceable(as sad as that is its true) and the management has failed already. So replacing them might actually make it more likely to succeed, not less.

That said it does suck the artists are gone. The writers have been fumbling recently however. Too many inconsistencies and timeline issues cropping up to really say they've been doing well as of late.
You forgot to mention that when we got OW2, all old OW coins you had to pay for (or farmed up) turned into these free-to-play coins which you can use for virtually NOTHING.
Wdym all my skins were through that (bought post OW2 but farmed coins during OW's final events)
You can use those to buy pretty much any cosmetic in the game besides legendary and premium skins

"virtually nothing" usable for almost every single ow1 cosmetic, old and new voice lines, old and new highlight intros, victory poses and practically everything in the hero gallery. Its been like this for quite a while now.

When he left, that’s when Overwatch 2 started moving again…but it wasn’t the game that we players and the OW devs hoped to be. Unfortunately, Overwatch 2 is basically Overwatch but with shop updates and PvE cancelled that everyone has been waiting for.
I do feel bad for Aaron and others that he had to keep dealing with Bobby and other’s bs while making sure Overwatch 2 is getting updates again.

The game hasn't become any better in the last decade, they raised everyone's expectations with pve mode, which they didn't release, so people just moved to more interesting things, I personally went to apex which is a BR, not a team DM, but the gameplay felt better, characters were more interesting and the weapon variety kept a lot of the gameplay fresh, while overwatch even to today (I play ow2 sparingly with some friends on discord) makes every game feel the same, there's no memorable moments.

For me the switch to 5s from 6s just destroyed my interest in the game. I had a discord friend group of people i met playing OW, just the 6 of us strangers (one was my friend from high school but i digress) and rather than kick someone out we all just sort of stopped playing. Sad as that is I also just loved the tank and off tank dynamic. Having that other tank that was just ride or die with you regardless of what the rest of the team was doing was special. Then they just reworked the characters that made double tank a problem anyways, it doesn't make sense and i just wish i could have the original game back.

@@nexor7809 I'm gonna be honest I don't think that's true anymore. It definitely was at launch, but the community sentiment has shifted overtime and I'm seeing a lot more 6v6 people than 5v5. For the better imo
Every other game is 5v5 or 4v4, something it's something else, but Overwatch was one of the unique ones with 6v6. During the beta it was fun since I could always go back to OW1, but after that it just became another game.

I played Overwatch 1 for years and somehow made it through the content drought. Overwatch 2 was so disappointing-- so many broken promises and monetization schemes-- that I quit the game after 1000+ hours on Ana. I've now moved on to single-player games; but watching this video leaves me equally parts nostalgic and sad.

i really, really miss the old maps :( to this day whenever i think of overwatch, the old maps instantly pop into my head and i'm all like "oh man i wanna go play some overwatch" and then i remember many of those maps Do Not Exist (at least in normals) anymore and i'm never gonna get to play another game on them.

Jack, I am so happy you are talking about this. I literally had 1400 hours in the first iteration of Overwatch. Was actually addicted to the game and had to quit it for similar reasons. It is actually astonishing how Overwatch "2", which can hardly be considered a sequel-in fact, I am old enough to know it took stuff away before it added anything, was able to be such an insult that I have no problem looking back now. Lootboxes, 15 dollar skins, transitoned into a disgusting battlepass system, removed the potential of PvE (literally the only reason we had a sequel outside of manufacturing player counts), all contributed to this games death. I am actually astonished it had as many players as it had until recently.
Overwatch nosedived straight into the shallow end, cracked its skull on the pool liner, and resurfaced from the water concussed speaking gibberish about a battlepass. 5v5 may be a interesting dynamic but it effectively streamlined all roles towards aggro, which was a surmounting issue for new heroes back when it was 6v6. Blizzard has destroyed their legacy, tainted their IPs, and Overwatch was no exception. Its fall was just long and slow. Like someone injected cancer into it and then let it rot.

i got into overwatch in 7th grade when i was like 13-14. It was bascially my main game, loved grinding for the lootboxes and the events. Eventually i stopped playing and caring during GOATS meta. Sucks to see it like this
Remember back when Overwatch released and had lootboxes people at the time non-stop raged and complained about the lootbox micro transactions. Nowadays people just want to go BACK to lootboxes since it was still easy to earn cosmetic items passively through just playing.
In reality we won't be able to go back to that and soon we'll learn to just sit down and shut up and go with battlepasses instead as they move on to the next more scummy mechanic.
Just saying "vote with your wallet" won't work anymore, since there are many whales who will continue regardless of community outrage.
Voting with your wallet does work for you it just won't fix the game in of itself. But adding to it wouldn't help.
That's the thing. A lot of games just couldn't fail due to whales. I just look from the sidelines and hear some drama every now and then

It was every other game making them far worse and giving very little ways of getting them for free that was the issue.
I mean vote with your wallet is the most meaningless sentiment because it's the exact opposite of what people need to do which is make a big stink which honestly has more of a chance of actually doing something than being quiet about something's issues which is what greedy execs LOVE. And let's be clear, Lootboxes weren't well liked or good because they rely heavily on that FOMO exclusivity BS alongside the borderline gambling aspects of them which can and was being used by Overwatch to get people to buy into them. I can't think of a single time that a quiet boycott has done anything, but I can think of many examples of people being obnoxious on social media actually getting things done, and that requires acknowledging that every game will always have it's whales no matter how bad the game is.
I remember grinding the money for the anniversary event allowing you to buy EVERYTHING you wanted to, and now farming credits is near fucking impossible it makes you want to whip out the credit card
I remember when I was playing overwatch 2 with my friends and spent so much hours on the game and still didn’t get Kiriko. Having hero’s behind a paywall or spending consistent hours to get it was not it 🤦♂️
The Overwatch 1 Beta was one of the best experiences I have ever had in gaming, just playing tracer and soldier 76 in the tutorial was so satisfying

The biggest shows of goodwill that can bring me back is:
a founders pass for OW1 players and it's just the OW1 skins and every new hero for a good few seasons.
And a permanent and maintained 6v6 game mode, even if it's just the original cast and the last OW1 patch.
I know a lot of people like the new mode, but I miss 2 tank synergy.
I mained rein/monke in 1 and I can say wholeheartedly I don't miss dva/hog/ball on my team. Not even a little.

this made me so nostalgic for 2017-18 overwatch. the game was everywhere, had a huge playerbase, felt fresh, had unique collabs like pink mercy and nano cola dva stand out in my mind!

it baffles me that Apex Legends, a game owned by EA, has it that you can get your apex coins back from the Battlepass + a little more coins than u originally paid for, since pretty much the day apex launched. But Blizzard still hasn't done that for over a year after Overwatch 2 released, but instead u get some lesser coins u can spend on some old Overwatch 1 skins.
I haven't heard many people mention that Blizzard offered early access to PvE content for $40 and didn't refund anybody when they didn't create it.
I enjoy the idea of just working for rewards. Like how you have to get specific gun skins in COD by doing challenges. Cause then I have an actual reason to try out different guns and such. I love Apex Legend’s weekly challenges for the battle pass cause then it forces me to play with shotguns more or snipers which I rarely use. Then I actually find myself having fun experimenting with load outs.

I gave up on this game when I tried to transfer all of my skins from season 1 of overwatch to this pos and i lost everything and it basically deleted it all

you know.. OW1 matches gave you 25 coins per game, regardless of win or loss. OW1 also had Portrait Borders that lvled with your account level.. hell even OW1's On-Fire had a small bar below your name/icon+ a Number Point Value Display.. all of that is gone.

Well blizzard wants to be able to do what riot does. They want highly inflated monitized consmetics in a competive game that is never fully balanced but gets new skins and characters and monthly balance changes take things out of meta and put new things in. All that just to say they are patching out skill expression over time in favor of milking playtime to increase profits.

Meta was ruined by bad support design from day one. Everybody wanted to be the dps hero and parties were unbalanced. They started adding lame broken healers (Ana was actually an exceptional design) then boring tanks, lots of shields.. all the meta was ruined, games were a coinflip
Remember when I used to play Overwatch, the main thing to look forward to, was those seasonal events, but as soon those events was over, the game became very stale for me and my friends that I played with... but even without those events, it was still hella fun, I never forget those moments

On a random sidenote: if you want to get rid of the audio artifacting, try exporting the video with PCM rather than AAC audio. In DaVinci, you can do it by exporting the video as a quicktime file with h.264 compression. In premiere... don't know. Click buttons ;) Assuming you record in 24 Bit, you can get the full quality. The issue was driving me nuts and by chance I stumbled upon the fix. Thought I might share.

Never got into overwatch. When the second one came out and there was a campaign rumored, i was prepared to become a fan only to find its the same game, no singleplayer and its even harder to get cosmetics and I dont buy battle passes. Game was fumbled so hard and i feel for the fans who played ow1 from the beginning
Every developer board room meeting after seeing how much money Fortnite is making hand over fist: "okay everyone... how do we get that Fortnite money?" I'm glad I got to enjoy the game at it's peak but yeah, they killed it. Haven't played in years.
I do not have a big problem with Overwatch 2. What I do have a big problem with is Blizzard making a 'sequel' and removing the original Overwatch.
Great video! Been playing Overwatch since 2018 through the dead years even and it has been a roller coaster of a game. The recent layoffs are unfortunately timed with the release of this video. If you look into custom games browser it's obvious there's nowhere near 800k+ players in the game, even when Overwatch was at its peak I'm sus whether it quite reached 800k at the same time. If you divide 800k by 10 you might get a more realistic answer across all platforms. And I say this as someone with 1000 hours in the game (OW1 mostly)

The only real stats we currently have is: Steam, Twitch and Google Trends.
Steam is not where a substantial portion of players come from lmao, you made that up. Steam release only came recently so it would make no sense that most players would come from there. Have you ever considered that maybe your hate boner is just wrong? Maybe theres a reason that a "OVERWATCH IS DEAD" video comes up every 4 months and then the game just keeps going.

Challanges in ow 2 can be done in 1-3 matches.
In case of 32:00 in this season there was a lot of sytuations where tank quit game coze was hard countered by Mauga just to re-join game and pick Mauga, yeah PPL quit game to buy battlepass for hero!! That's crazy!

The answer is yes, Overwatch is entirely over. People don't come back, and I am not talking just players. I am talking developers. The people who were good at making games are gone. You don't just come back. It is like Tribes, Tribes is not coming back. S'over.
one more thing to mention about the recent skins is that they are mostly recolors of older skins being sold for around 15 bucks. and the newer mythic skins are lacking in variety, if u compare the combos u can do with genjis mythic skin with hanzos u will see that with hanzo u have very little choices and combos u can make.
making overwatch 5v5 to sell OW2 as a new game is one of the craziest ponzi schemes in history
I wouldn’t expect the acquisition by Microsoft to change anything. Since they spent $68 billion, they’re going to want to recoup that investment…so the milking will continue.
I had played Overwatch for years. I was just playing casually with a group of online “friends”. I was just in plat for most of that time.
After Overwatch 2 came out, I decided I wanted to buckle down and get good. I got to masters. But I got bullied and harassed off the game by said “friend” group because I got ranked higher than a few people who thought me inferior. Stalked in game. Threats out of game ect. Decided it wasn’t worth it and quit.

I borderline dedicated my adolescence until my early college years to overwatch. This game genuinely made me depressed and it felt like a toxic breakup moving on from it finally. I played this game competitively, I scrimmed it, I even played at a Lan with my collegiate team. It's a shame.

I loved Overwatch, but Activision-Blizzard's endless greed and infinite-growth-requirement-to-keep-the-investors-happy ruined it with Overwatch 2.0.
I played Overwatch 2.0 at launch for an hour before quitting, and I haven't touched the game since. It's just...bad now. The only reason they released Overwatch 2.0 was to revamp the in-game store, because loot boxes weren't profitable enough.

Fun fact: the battle passes in OW2 didn’t originally even offer currency back- they started adding currency into them AFTER people complained about the lack of that detail. And when they added the currency, not only was it the FREE currency, it was colored yellow to look nearly indistinguishable from the premium currency! Which is what tricked me and many others into buying that battle pass. And guess what, now it’s colored white to differentiate it. But guess what again, they never refunded it to those of us who got scammed. Actual con artists.

Opening up with the "Hi, I'm Paul" from the DNA Prouductions reel at the end of Jimmy Neutron episodes unlocked a core memory.
Watching this video also unfortunately unlocked memories of how good Overwatch used to be, and how far it has strayed from that game.

i had alot of fun with overwatch back in its early days but once people figured all counters and started sweating, counter picking over and over killed the fun for me

Please don't rely on the total play-count websites. The reason is: There is no actual publicly available information on how the game is doing on consoles I believe.
Some of those websites usually don't list the source for the numbers because they are not based on a real statistic... but some of them do specify that the numbers are based on history/predictions/speculation/assumptions - which basically means no actual real-time stats was used in them. There is no objective way to confirm those numbers.
The most objective you can get with the stats currently is: Steam stats, Twitch stats, Google Trends.
The first two aren't too reliable either. Or, well, it depends. Single player games generally have a lower player and viewer count compared to multiplayer games.
@@TH_Zireael2077 Steam stats are 100% reliable for users playing through steam. They show us the numbers. If a single player game has lower players than a multiplayer game well...its because it does.
In order to gauge viewer interest, more than twitch stats should be used but it helps (twitch / kick stats, youtube statistics, google searches, etc.)

@Nayutune Saying OW got reviewbombed is factual lol, linking TF2s steampage is not criticism, plenty of OW players criticize it, its literally a competitive game with tons of changes. But to try and act like people who never played the game, people who only talk about Overwatch to say its dead are giving legit criticism is hilarious. It's overwatch 1 with a worse comp system. Tank feels miserable with 1 less tank, Supports became over buffed because of it, DPS are forced to be sacrificial off tank pawns. That's why sups are the most common gm players, followed by tank, followed by dps. It's a JOKE

Being a kid is seeing Skylanders be ruined by corporate greed. Being an adult is seeing Overwatch be ruined by corporate greed.
For me the incentive to keep playing is to climb the ranks. I like getting better, making bigger plays, hitting more shots, etc, so for me the game has always been fun and things like events and skins haven't been relevant - but - the *majority* of players don't play ranked and aren't motivated like me. Just sharing this perspective.
Ow2 ranked is trash... you can legit duo with someone on a smurf losing 14 games in a row, then be versing people 1 1/2 below your current rank. This has been in the game since ow2 launch. GARBAGE SYSTEM.
I don't see a point to improve when you can legit just abuse the rank system in such an easy way.
I really liked OW2, but man, the wasted 3-4 years of OW than the pile of shit pve they shat out was the nail in the coffin.
I'm glad you can enjoy it friend, honest. I really enjoyed Comp when I played, but I really enjoyed the earning system as well.
Free to play is not an excuse to make people who already payed for it pay for it again
The one thing i am more disappointed in than Blizzard, are the fans who continuously pump money into them. Their business product is so scammy that even Stevie Wonder would see trough it. But fans continue to just play and support them because of blind tribalism. And it’s not just Overwatch 2, the same with Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6, both fighting games with outrageous DLC practices, *a lot* of people call them out, but the blind fanboys continue chugging money into their scammy product. And don’t get me started on GTA players. Companies can do whatever they want because the huge group of fansheeps will gladly give their money away.
