First off, beautiful. Second, the smoking you experienced is called an exothermic reaction. That means that you’re heating your resin to a high degree of heat therefore, creating the smoke. Be careful about that because when heating resin, do it slowly so you don’t experience the smoke. I recommend wearing a mask because the smoke creates toxic fumes. Anytime you heat resin to a a high degree, wear a mask, please. As far as your sides are concerned, it’s up to you to have the natural overflow of the resin or tape the sides if you want to paint the sides. Hope this was helpful.

It's also the alcohol evaporation, paired with the resin being too hot. But it is beautiful ♥️. Be careful with heating resin and alcohol, like this person said, the fumes are noxious.

Hi Julie, I dont know if you know it already - but: theres a formula to calculate the right amount of resin for your canvas/board. It is length times width times 0,158. So for a 30x40cm canvas you need 189,6g resin. Calculate plus about 10% (for the sides or for "just in case"). So you will need about 200g resin (100g A + 100g B). Beautiful artwork!

To stabilize a stretched canvas for resin, I turn it over and lay it down on the table then pour clear resin in the back of it and let it cure hard. Then, it makes it so that when you pour on the front, the center won't sag and it all stays rigid like a wood panel would. This really turned out beautiful. I love how the colours all blended together and I really love the gold lacing! 😍

Hi Julie, first of all that is stunning and listening to your excitement just nails it. Secondly if you're heating your resin you should be wearing a mask, I can't stress this enough, those fumes are really harmful for you. And as someone else said, if you dam your canvas before you pour then take the tape off when it starts to get sticky it will cover your sides. Try the gold from resinpro it is stunning and what you're looking for 💖.. Oh and people keep those skins and add them to another piece of art work or you can make earrings, magnets, phone skins etc etc 💖

It looks amazing. I use canvases for my resin works and if you work in layers, it works out fine and I make really heavy pieces, never had a problem.
I wouldn’t be able to waste all that resin off the side, I would’ve scooped it all up and put it in a mould or used those dry skins in another piece. That’s one thing about pouring art that I just can’t bring myself to do- waste all the paint the runs off the sides. I usually put another canvas underneath and carefully let the excess paint spill onto it, creating a background or something for another piece. Sometimes the cells are better on the underneath canvas if you pay attention to where the excess paint goes.
I’m going to see if I can create resin cells with a heat gun now!

It’s so fun to see you get excited. I know the excitement. This is beautiful! I seen a lot of people tell you this but it is important to use a mask when you heat up your resin to that degree. Those fumes will really mess with your lungs. I don’t wear my mask the whole time only when I heat it up.

Hey Julie-- i strongly recommend a mask and getting a fan in there, as well as avoiding smoke, fumes, vapors while you're creating a piece. can you do narration over your youtube video after you get done with handling the materials? i know it's inconvenient for making these videos (which i love every day!) and we'd miss your humor, but i/we care about you and your lungs. Ziggie is going to need you around for a while! plus a lot of people are watching youtube videos and thinking this is the best way to complete these projects at home. modeling safe practices not only keeps you healthy but could also keeps new artists healthy and making more art along with you for longer!

That's what they do for epoxy countertops too. You remove the tape when the epoxy is gummy and it kinda just lays down on the edges. Just remember to pinch the top corners of the tape to put tension on the "dam".

Just beautiful, such rich colours. As for your gorgeous runoff, when I have some drips I cut them up into small pieces and use them in clear or transparent coloured resin. It makes a beautiful layer in a pyramid, and doesn’t waste resin. I’d hate see those fabulous colours go to waste...maybe you could cut these into more manageable sizes and put into a coaster with some clear to create depth. I doubt you’ll have as much as that next time, because you know better now how much to use. Ps. I love your enthusiasm. Art should be fun, and it’s obvious you’re enjoying yourself.💜

  • @morganyoung1402

Absolutely stunning Julie!! So glad you added the gold!!! Most resins can only hold a surface tension of about an 8th of an inch. Any more than that and your resin will start to fall off. Also, depending on the sides round, squared, etc, the resin will stretch over them and can sometimes make it thin, showing the underneath.
I always either paint it and let the resin fall as it will. OR I use sand paper to round the edges a bit.
But...this is beautiful just as is. Kinda reminds me of a sea creature floating in the ocean. Absolutely stunning. If it hasn’t already been grabbed up by someone else, and is for sale, I’m def. interested!!!!

Very pretty colors. You can actually burn the resin and get divots or wrinkles if you heat it too close or long. The smoking is a sign of too much heat. Especially with high Voc resin the more toxic. A respirator is recommended. I support my canvases with card board. It works like a charm.

Hi there. You are my fav when it comes to Pour Painting, Love your humour and you never get boring. I have been doing some really nice Pours with dirty cup pours, swipes etc in oceanic colours and they are really pretty. I purchased some "Platinum 2 part to 1 part" epoxy resin to resin them with. I cleaned the canvases with a warm wet soapy cloth allowed them to dry. Initially the resin just made my canvases POP. I was like WOW Wow Wow.. I went out about 10 minutes later and the whole canvas that I resined just fish eyed all over. I was so upset I wiped the resin off before it started to go off. Have you or anyone else got any theories about this. I had to wipe two small canvases and this stuff aint cheap.

Everyone is correct about the respirator. But your heat gun must have been set on a high heat setting. I could see the red reflection in the resin. Try turning down the heat (if your heat gun has a lower setting). The resin shouldn't be smoking while you are using the heat gun. Also, the reason other artists use wood is because resin is heavy and has a tendency to warp the canvas. I have seen some put wood slats on the back of the canvas for support. Good luck and keep trying new things. I love working with resin!

Absolutely Gorgeous. I'm commenting late, ... someone may have already suggested, using painters tape to dam the edge of the canvas.. then, when you do your clear, it won't run, ... the Other option- is to put the tape on the back, the resin will peel of with the tape. Those Extra pieces .. use them in All ways. You could still get them into molds- some molds.. or cut your own way, and make Anything with them. Sliced into "cane pieces" they could be arranged in one of your molds, and you could just fill with clear, and have 100% o.o.a.k anything... I'd bet, if you cut the overages, some of it would have rings... I don't watch often- any channel.. but. I do so enjoy how excited and surprised you are at your Own creativity...
I like doing mold pours, just like acrylic pours.. you need white and clear, to get them to act right... but. I'm having a BLAST making trays, coasters, and ashtrays- skipping the acrylic pour, and using my resin as if it were pouring paint... gorgeous canvas!!

I love that you keep the "making a mess" bit in. Shows folks that if you mess up, it can be fixed. Also, art really should be messy. You should have paint or dye or whatever somewhere on yourself the next day even if you shower😁
I was paying attention to the smoking (and no, it shouldn't do that) and that's where the cells came up. So maybe smoking is a good thing. I'd suggest a respirator.
After watching you add more gold and hitting with a heat gun, it's definitely the gun causing the smoke. Maybe it would be better to use a hair dryer? Not so much heat. That smoke has to be absolutely toxic. No way around it.

I find quality pigments in resin one of the most beautiful things ever. Especially a huge fan of blues!

I’m new to working with resin and I’m looking at all aspects. My question is why resin over resin. I know folks use it to protect their pours, but resin over resin seems redundant to me🤔.

Gilly, it's so pretty. Got chastised for using 7 colors on a round canvas but looked like my 20th painting in 10 days. Still a beginner.

I love your sense of color! Why did that first piece that you peeled off the table strike me as material for an amazing bicycle seat cover? The other long piece you pulled off I would really want to try and make a wristwatch band from. Probably neither idea would work too well, because the epoxy will probably continue to set and become quite rigid, but I could see beautiful earrings and pendants made from this technique. What about doing a multi-layer pour (or dip) for creating pendants and earrings? You could probably get some amazing 3D effects by using 2 or 3 layers and letting them set before applying the next. Now I'm going to have to invest in some resin and pigments.

The skins remind me of labradorite stone. You could make some jewelry from it!
The resin smokes because it is a few degrees from burning. Be cautious.
The "invisible" fumes can cause chemichal pneumonia - delayed reaction by a few days. Be careful.
Chemical pneumonia can thake 3 months to recover from - huge fatigue.
Fumes can also cause a toxic allergy, where your skin is rashy and itchy as you detox through your pores.
Maybe there will be no symptoms for a long time, but once you are allergic, you will have reactions.
    Be careful of your health!

Do not throw out the skin! You can layer it in a table top project there are a number of things you can use the skin it created for just please, do not trash it. Reuse AS MUCH as you can, reuse, recycle but, please don't trash it. We definitely have enough in out landfills. There is a project I like "Precious Plastics" I'll link the project videos try to reimagine what you already have.
    ua-cam.com/video/UD57zOGqAPs/v-deo.html
Your hubby could probably make the shredder design but, please reimagine what you already have.
On the back of that canvas you just poured you have a tray shape pour the layers on the backside place the skin in there then you have a dual surface.

This is amazing!!!! And gorgeous. Looking at your dried result I’m thinking why top coat? As I see the top coat being applied I m thinking it added depth? Regardless, it’s stunning. What are your thoughts? Did the top coat add to its beauty?

pour resin down on next canvas, drop these wastes onto canvas to use as 3D raised effect and pour around it and just keep going. Skins like these are great for making Jewelry in the snap together fittings, instant and beautiful as well. Don't breath the heated fumes, can cause a form of lung inflammation, and with covid still around, not worth the risk, MASK UP.

Beutifully done With! 💚💙 With resin you spray alcohol on top to get the cells. See Stonetop Countertops YT videos. Also you should tape the sides until it begins to thicken, THEN do the sides and corners.

I think its Georgous!!!! Love it. The colors do pop. I also think resin is flammable. I believe that maybe why it's smoking. I'm not sure. I will Google it to see. Awesome love it

You are hilarious! I hope your resin is non toxic. You have to be careful about breathing in the fumes. Please check the precautions. When I blow resin, I do use a respirator. Sorry, enough of that, eh? I love how it looks and the lacing is just awesome!. I've resined my canvases before and they turn out great. I sometimes have to pour a top coat if the edges don't get covered. The skins can be used in jewelry pieces. I'll bet your patients love you a lot

Beautiful work, why it smokes is the alcohol in the gold and it is a flammable liquid resin. Ty love your work and I'm now trying a variety of things myself. K

It looks incredible beautiful. Just a thought..the smoke may have been caused by the heat and also the amount of alcohol you place on the gold is flammable. Be extremely careful when using alcohol with resin. Overall your artistic ability is fabulous
