All your videos are helpful. .I can't thank you enough (well maybe when I have my workshop properly set up and I'm doing more than restringing pearls. ..not to knock the pearls. ..any trade is good when you are starting out. ..I may actually make enough to subscribe to your Patreon thingy, I never actually noticed if you do, but you should know that you are helping a lot of people to do what they really want to do rather than just accepting the mind numbing 9-5 you give people like me hope that we can actually do something we love xx

I keep some in a mini patron tequila bottle. They're bottom heavy and the cork is user friendly. Drill the cork and stick a paint brush in, like a ball graver, and you're good to go.

Using the SAME BRUSH, 'dipping' into fluxes, shows us Can't Trust any outcome. ! = [
What are those Black spots, [lumps] in first two? thanks!

Karen O: My guess would be the flux eating away at the metal.

Did you just use the same brush for all 3? That means the 2nd and 3rd test spots are a combination of 2 and 3 of the fluxes.

  • @jeffdewe

You should of used 3 brushes or cleaned the brushes, each test is totally contaminated other than the first one.

Martin Rodrigue I agree & totally noticed it right away. He needs to use a clean brush for each 1 of the fluxes. He also contanimated the whole containers of the 2nd & 3rd by swirling the brushing in the liquid.

Can you use regular borax powder and water?

  • @animalisticvalues
    @animalisticvalues 11 років тому +1

Ive mixed boric acid and borax with distilled before as flux but wasnt very consistent. Now I only use premixed. Its cheap, fast, and as long as it's mixed everyday I use it, it's perfect.

It is great in melting crucibles too ;-)

The thing is flux is not for cleaning the base metal should be clean already by phisically cleaning all pieces with a cleaner such as scotchbrite sand paper or what have you, All fluxes regardless of form be it in flux core wire flux coated rods or shielding gasses you name it are for the exclusion of the enemy OXYGEN, That's it

Sir I want to thank you so much. I have a borax cone but do not have the borax dish. Do you know of anything that is readily available that I can use in lieu of buying the proper dish. Being on disability I need to find as many cheap alternatives as I can. Thanks so much for doing this video my friend. Your teachings are a blessing.

any chance of doing a vid, on the rolling mill, I know you have done one on embossing, I have just got one, and obviously you got the standard, and the ones for patterns, but the ones which makes the wire where the size goes from big to small, I was wondering what you would use them for, and what it does to the metal, do you start in the biggest and then move down to make it into finer wire ?? thanks soham your the man, there are other vids on here on rolling mills, but no one as good as you !

i work as a mechanic for a jeweler and he's not paying me to teach me how to be a jeweler but intelligent people tend to keep company and if you just watch people why they work and be quiet.... then get your own personnal once of silver on your own time one jewelers didnt have youtube till this century and everything was earned (shooting waxes should wear your thumbs out) watch gentlemen like this that master a trade and freely explain that if you heat to much your have to start over. Thank you for considering some people have never heated flux like that)t come to vegas mister harrison ill show you around

Hey Mike, I haven't yet tried but I do have a small mortar and pestle, so I figure I will try the mortar or is it the pestle, lol. I believe the dish part is called the mortar so I will try this and let you know. Soham suggested I use this and since I had access to one I will give it a go. Check back with you later.

Helpful video, though I noticed you didn't clean the brush in between different applications of flux types. Now I assume this really doesn't make a big difference, but as a "don't cross contaminate" type of guy I am it makes me question whether or not this had an effect that change the true outcome of that test in the end. I'm not criticizing per se, but more on the line of being inquisitive. Again helpful video and thanks for posting it.

Excellent video! Do you by chance know what makes Aluminum Flux so special and why I see aluminum flux/flux pastes going for (a minimum of) $18 + for just a 4 oz bottle? Would really like to see a future video on the properties of aluminum flux, if this is something you happen to know about or also specialize in(!?) Thumbs up and thank you so much for sharing!
