This answered a lot of questions I had about nuclear blast effects. In particular, I was puzzled about survivor experiences in the book, "Hiroshima." Three of the survivors were about a mile from ground zero; three were from about two miles away. All were luckily shielded by an earthen or stone barrier. The ones a mile away had enough time to take one more step before the blast wave hit; the ones two miles away had enough time for 2-3 steps. That did not square with the speed of sound in normal air, but made sense in terms of heating effects.

The British did a similar test in Australia with P-51’s and Centurion tanks. The surviving aircraft were salvaged and at least one is still flying. At least one of the Centurions were later deployed to Vietnam.

The contamination was all in the extremely thin layer of surface dust. It really wouldn't make sense to bury them.
