Another quarantine project done. Starrett surface gauge style. Hope you guys enjoy the video. As always, thanks for watching. Thanks for your support: / calem21
This is a wonderful example of your growing knowledge and skill, thank you for sharing. You have a gift and I am so gland about that. The new camera positions and shutter speeds are great too. Keep exploring the possibilities. Kindest regards and best wishes from Dublin, Ireland.
As always, it is a treat to watch you do your thing, and it's amazing what you can do with what you have on hand. Keep putting up all your wonderful content for us to enjoy!!
Another great video! I’m not even a machinist but I love watching you work! You have a resourcefulness in your approach that is refreshing. It’s great to watch you repurpose old metal and refurbish old machines... Cheers 🍻 brother!
A tip for those small easy to bend parts, take a piece of aluminum and drill and tap a hole for that thread, screw it in tight and it won’t bend, it can still shear so to mitigate that, bore a small shoulder that the knurled section fits tightly into, this will take all the tangential load off the threaded section and save you so much frustration
You absolutely never cease to amaze us all with your skills Ca Lem. Yet another brilliant piece of work! Skilfully designed beautifully executed. Keep on the way you are going and you will be one of the worlds best hands on machinist. So glad I subscribed 18 months ago, I've enjoyed every last video you have uploaded.
Well, one thing I’ve learned from this video! After careful consideration on the investment in machinery, tools, and supplies… let me get back to my search for a decent used surface gage!
Off the charts my friend. It is so grate to see you doing such fine work. You have come so far since i first watched you work on your first lathe. With no tools to speak of. Now look at you go.. god bless and keep up the grate work
Utterly incredible ! Thankyou for sharing this beautiful build. How you turned the shaft so precisely without using a rest I cannot magine ! You are on your way towards robin and stefans level. Fantastic craftsmanship.
This illustrates the dangers of letting an artist play with machine tools... it raises the bar to an unfair level. I was perfectly happy with my surface gauge before, now I guess I'll just melt it down and take up golf.
This is gorgeous work! Thanks for taking the time to share, and PLEASE keep making new stuff - so very cool to see someone making so many high quality tools themselves and repurposing things along the way that would otherwise be thrown out.
As soon as I saw the vice chucks at the end, i thought this might be a side channel of his.....like an alter-ego or something, lol Either way, can't wait to watch through some of this guy's videos.
A little tip.. when hardening long parts, don't drop them in sideways because they will tend to bend towards the side that hit the liquid first.. best to have a deeper tank and drop it end first
Amazing stuff you do all the time, I wish I had all those tools, and the knowledge you show, very impressive, keep that amazing work, and if I could say, I'd like to see something about rotary broaching.
Awesome work as always! I am also planning on mounting a dividing head on my grinder like you did. The drill was a great idea to turn it into a spindexer

TommyGun Machining Dude, that was the pain in the a**.
Thinking of the way you clamped the piece on the rotary table to cut the large radius, you could make a round fixture plate with threaded holes for it that was taller than the jaws and have slots underneath and just hold it down with the Chuck.

John Nason that’s dividing head. Not supposed to use as rotary table i think. I’ll get the rotary table soon.
In today's episode of "I don't have one so I'll make one"...
PLUS bonus build! Make a tap from a freakin' tap!
Incredible work dude.

Those mirror like finishing passes on the lathe are impressive. Very well tuned machine!
As always, it is a treat to watch you do your thing, and it's amazing what you can do with what you have on hand. Keep putting up all your wonderful content for us to enjoy!!
Takes me back 45 years making a clock stand as part of my apprenticeship as a toolmaker.

Thanks a bunch Ca Lem. Always love watching your projects take shape. Very nice.
Remember to wet sanding on the lathe. Wd40 or spirit, alcohol... So the abrasive grit wont fly all over machine surfaces and mechanisms

How about use it as the golf club
"Ohhh", I actually made that sound when I saw the thumb screw fly out...
Earned a sub.
