  • I can teach you how to properly pronounce the R and double R in Spanish. With the techniques I teach in the video, you can practice and start pronouncing properly in no time!
    For the complete course, go here:
    learn_spanish1.teachable.com/p/learn-spanish-online-language-course
    Or if you want a the course on a physical disc for your computer, visit www.eSpanishTea...
    If you're trying to learn Spanish and want me as your teacher, go here: learn_spanish1.teachable.com/p/learn-spanish-online-language-course
    Rolling your R's in Spanish can be tricky for some. Whenever I get with a group of new Spanish students, it seems like there are those that can do it easily and then a few who have a bit of trouble.
    The purpose of this video is to help anyone who needs guidance on the proper way to roll the Spanish R. But it's more than that. Just like mastering Spanish pronunciation requires your mouth to form the proper shapes in order to pronounce the sounds correctly, rolling your R's in Spanish properly is an exercise getting your tongue, mouth, and teeth to behave properly.
    That's right, in order to roll your R's when speaking Spanish, you must train the muscles in your tongue and mouth to do certain things as you speak. You even have to involve your lungs and teeth to a certain degree. Very quickly you can see that speaking Spanish--or any language--is truly a physical activity.
    Don't feel overwhelmed. I'm making it sound more complicated than it really is. Check out the video and if you want to learn even more Spanish go here: learn_spanish1.teachable.com/p/learn-spanish-online-language-course

    I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING FOR SO LONG and kept failing and failing after watching endless videos and was about to give up but this video finally helped me do it for the first time!!! The “ada” sound repeatedly helped me say “carro” in Spanish. Thank you SO MUCH!! And for anyone still struggling, you will get it I promise just do not give up it’s so worth it when you finally do get it

    The sequence "butter, utter, utta" worked for me to learn the trilled "r". I knew the soft "r" but the trilled "r" was my challenge. Thank you. I would say the tongue vibrates quickly. I can't growl yet but I can get the multi-bounce vibration. Thanks again.

    I wanted to tell everyone, that I'm 37 and could never roll my r - and after practicing for 4 days, I finally managed a small trill using this method! I still can't really control it, but can trill arrrra. Now I need to learn how to do it on command with different vowels. There is hope!

    I watched this yesterday, and today I can do it!!!! This is seriously the best video. So many people before tried to explain how to do it to me but this magical butter method did the trick! I think it's the fact that a lot of English speakers can't relax their tongues, so doing the butter thing helps you learn that.
    Thank you so much!!

    This is a follow up to my TWO earlier posts. After about 5 to 6 days practicing at least once and probably a couple times a day, my tongue is continuing to make substantial progress. I do get lots of TRILL sounds and with less and less effort each time. Sometimes the TRILL can be made even without a lot of air. This is encouraging!!! I think that I'll keep at this and report my progress in TEN more days.

    This is a follow up to my three earlier posts which started, I believe, about one month ago. This method IS working and it just gets better and better. My tongue (which used to feel clumsy and stiff and lifeless) now flaps relaxed and easy. Am I PERFECT, yet for forming the Spanish and Thai rolling RRRs? No not yet, but I am getting very close. The steady progress is soooo encouraging. Thanks for posting this.

    I've looked at about 10 different videos on this subject over the last THREE days. And I tried the different methods that are suggested including saying the tongue twisters over and over and faster and faster and such. But my tongue just felt DEAD. But...after about 10 minutes with your "utta, utta, utta," exercise ... I think that I am making progress. My tongue HAS done a little flapping on the roof of my mouth in ways never before experienced.I'll keep trying and report on my progress later.

    This is a follow up to my post of 21 hours ago. I'll still practicing. And I'm getting a lot of tongue flapping but I think that it is more from and actual trill that I get when I do the "pirate guttural throat clearing sound" (which is getting very good at flapping the tongue -- although the sound does not last very long). I am seeming pretty far away from the RRRR (growl that you make) which seems to be both long lasting and a little disconnected from the "utta, utta, utta" sound that you recommend. I'll keep trying and will report on my progress. I do recognize that the "pirate guttural throat clearing sound" is coming from the back of the throat and I do KNOW that that is not where I want to be generating the rolling RRRs which is at the front of the mouth.

    The alveolar tap (the Spanish "R") actually does exist in English. It's an allophone of both D and T. The reason saying an English "D" helps with the alveolar tap is because D becomes an alveolar tap in certain circumstances in English. The English "T" does as well. This is why the words "latter" and "ladder" are actually pronounced exactly the same in English. They both contain the alveolar tap instead of D or T. The sound in the middle of both "ladder" and "latter" is the Spanish "R." If you use a D like this video suggests for a word like "para" your English phonology will help you say the word correctly. English phonology doesn't want a true D there. (Saying "potter" and then dropping the last R might work too.) It becomes difficult with words like "por favor" as the alveolar tap never occurs at the end of a word in English, but it can be done with practice. Saying "pora favora" (or "poda favoda") for a while and then dropping the "a" might help.
    The alveolar trill (Spanish "rr") is more difficult as we have no trills in English. The "butter" idea this video mentions is a good way to learn it I think. I usually think of the alveolar trill as the alveolar tap happening over and over (lots of tapped R's in a row).

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679 5 років тому

      Maybe latter and ladder are pronounced the same in American English, but not in British English. The t is either fully pronounced or a glottal stop is used.

    @Learn Spanish TV So thank you very much for this video. It is the ONLY video on UA-cam that got me started with getting my tongue to trill. However, I can only get the vibration going for quick bursts when saying "udda". I can't sustain it for multiple seconds like you can. When I try, I just get a spitting "tttthhhHTTTTThhhhhhshsssthhhhtttttt" sound. Also, as soon as I try to incorporate it into the rr words, it just doesn't happen and I'm back to square one. Am I still on the right track?

  • @gwelengu
    @gwelengu 6 років тому +2

    I can do the trill for a second. but I cannot get it to keep going indefinitely. I've been practicing trying to get a more consistent trill and it just isn't happening, I've been practicing for a long time. This is using the para/adadada method.
    But what I can do is get the tongue to vibrate. The problem is that it uses too much air or I spit and it's very difficult to use while speaking words.

    The problem is for a british english speaker we would use a glottal stop for the letter t, not a d as a US english speaker would. So even doing that d sound is unnatural.
    I can do r no problem, I just can't trill. I'll keep trying udder!

  • @robinchanteusedylan8326

    Am so gonna try this "udda udda udda udda..." exercise! I can do the single r 'flap' & can trill, like old school bell rrrrriiing, but simply can't articulate perro correctly. It comes out pehthrro. I can do it as erro, ehrrrrro but if I do the p, it won't roll. Same thing for burro. I can do urro. Somehow the consonent is tripping me up. I successfully say arrrrrrrroz for arroz con pollo & arrrriba because they start w/ vowels. Anyway, perhaps you could make a vid on how to incorporate the trilled rr into real words. All the vids on UA-cam show how to begin learning trill, but then it's learning to say the actual words. 😃

    • @uSpeakSpanish
      @uSpeakSpanish  7 років тому +5

      Thanks for watching and for your interest in rolling the Spanish R and double R. Focusing on the "tt" in "butter" and "utta" can help students improve pronunciation of the Spanish R first and then the double R. In English, our "tt" is often pronounced softly, almost like an English D, for example "buder" (butter) and by extension "udah" (utta). The point is that this soft T or D sound in English is very similar to the Spanish R. Take a common Spanish word such as "Para" and instead of saying that hard R sound (which is a temptation for many), replace the R with a D, which you'll get "Pada", which is already a big improvement. It sounds like you understand that part fine, but it may be helpful to others watching this. Now take that same D sound and start to repeat it consecutively, faster and faster each time until it sounds sort of like a helicopter, like udddddah". Do this exercise over and over again because it will train your tongue on the proper shape and position to make the correct sound and pronunciation for the Spanish double R.

    • @100PercentOS2
      @100PercentOS2 7 років тому +1

      Thanks for you reply. I have been practicing the way you are teaching to say the "r". I've got that down quite good now using your method. But the "rr" is the biggest problem where I might get 3 trills of my tongue. I've also been recording my voice saying the "r" and the "rr" and if I never improved anymore I'm pretty happy with what it sounds like now when I compare what I say with the Spanish speaker which don't roll his "rr' so long.
      Unfortunately I'm unable to roll the "rr" like you as much as I would love to. I will probably have to get with a Spanish teacher and be shown how to roll my tongue like you do.
