Hi Marie, good question. I think it depends on whether you are knitting this stitch in the flat or in the round (which is the case with this hat). If knitting in flat, then yes, the set-up row is usually a Yo, Sl1 and K1 (see my one-color brioche scarf video at ua-cam.com/video/4E0rLm3_jXU/v-deo.html). Hope this helps and thanks for watching! Hi.very nice video. How many stitches should we take to make a hat for a 6 year old child. I want to knit with a 4 mm needle or 5 mm needles which I have.Thank you 😊
Thanks, Shaheen! The best way to know how many stitches to cast on for the hat is to know approx head circumference of child. For a 6-year-old, typical hat circumference is about 20 inches (stretched hat). So if you cast on enough stitches to give you a 16 inch circumference (unstretched), I think it would fit well (brioche is very stretchy). Since you know the needles you wish to use, would suggest making a small swatch in one-color brioche (cast an odd number of stitches, say 11 stitches, and knit a few rows; see my video of 1-color brioche knit in the flat: ua-cam.com/video/4E0rLm3_jXU/v-deo.html). If the swatch measures say 2 inches in width, then you would need about 8 times the number of stitches to get 16 inches (so if 11 st gives 2 in, then can cast on 80 st). I expect you may actually need less, maybe 60 sts. But check the gauge first by making swatch. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊
Definitely can knit brioche with straight needles. Check out my brioche 1-color video (ua-cam.com/video/4E0rLm3_jXU/v-deo.html), which shows how to knit it in the flat. You can also try the 2-color version (ua-cam.com/video/QGyeyWMnqi0/v-deo.html). Once done, you can join the ends by seaming the edges (have a video on that at ua-cam.com/video/vSQYKh4GoZ0/v-deo.html; although it shows how to seam with regular garter stitch, can try a similar approach. I will plan on knitting a brioche hat with regular needles and hope to have a video on that (including joining the edges) in the near future. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe. Hi @Knittycat, I was able to knit the brioche pattern but when I tried decrease I had trouble and it did not look right so I ended up knitting the whole length without decrease. Also, I don't have double pointed needles and not sure when knitting with straight needles I need double pointed needles for making decreases. Sorry, I am a total newbie in knitting. If you happen to make a video for knitting hats using fisherman rib or brioche with straight needles that would be great specially for newbies like me 😊. Thanks for the tutorials. They are really helpful.
My dear 🐱, I am doing something very wrong in my two color fisherman’s rib hat😏 I have watched you do it many times . I can follow the pattern without a problem. Adding the second color is fine. Where I am doing something wrong is what do I do with the yarn when I have finished the row. Do I keep both colors behind when I’m using one and then the other? Everything looks great except when I finish the row and start a new row. Just those two rows have a wrong color in them. I have been watching you but you don’t show the end of the second row. Thank you ever so much. Your Oregon friend Jan
Thanks, Annie, and glad that decreases worked with a diff pattern. Actually, I have provided the detailed pattern for this hat in the video description (if you click on the dropdown icon below video, you can see it). I have not posted it yet to any site but hope to do so in the future😊 Thanks for watching and best wishes!
You're a good teacher. I'm a beginner and finishing a brioche scarf, thanks to you. This one's a little scary. Not sure how many to cast on. I have a 23.5" head. lol Should I use the 24" needles?
I think if the yarn and needle size you use matches or is close to the gauge I mention in the video description, then you can cast on 80 stitches and can still use a 16 inch circular needle. See my notes at the bottom of video description for more details on cast more than 64 sts. This het can be a bit challenging for a beginner but since you've knit the scarf with this stitch, it may not be so bad (especially with just one color). Hope you go for it 👍 😊
@@KnittycatsKnits Scarf finished. I'm so happy. I actually figured out how to un-knit any mistakes (usually forgotten yarn overs) towards the end, so I didn't need so many lifelines. I'm mentally preparing for the hat and my first knitting in the round. I was wondering if there's any way to read your stitches here to see if you left off on a BRK row or a BRP row, if you put your work down? The brioche purls every other row will be a little confusing after just repeating BRK's. p.s. After working the scarf, I much prefer the Brioche stitch to the Fisherman's rib in flat. It's much easier to read what you're doing anywhere in the project, and undo.
Yay!! Glad you finished scarf and that you figured out the undoing of stitches (as that can be challenging). I hope you enjoy knitting the hat. Actually there is a way to tell if you are at a BRK or a BRP but may be easier for me to demo in a video (will try to post one in upcoming weeks). Happy New Year!!😀🎉

Hi Mary, the instructions for the hat are in the video description field. I don't have a pattern available for purchase at this time but expect to in the next couple months when I launch my website. For now, hoping you can get the details from the video description and let me know if you have questions. Thanks for watching and best wishes!
Great video! Clear instructions! 👍 However, you might want to edit the pattern notes to mention Rnds 11 and 12. I assume that they are the same as Rnds 5 and 6. 😜 💐
Thanks, dukeofpurl! And thanks for the great catch!! Actually, it should been just Rounds 7-10, then redistribute and then Rounds 11-14, ending with Rounds 15-16. I have now corrected it in the pattern. You could still insert an additional repeat of rounds 5 and 6 (after round 10) for an even gentler curve at the top. But I had skipped them for my pattern and so thanks again for noticing and letting me know. Hope to have my website up and running in the new year, so I have a better forum for posting lengthy patterns 😊 Cheers!
Glad you found the two-color brioche hat video, Clara. Note that I have shown the hat decreases for that one in a separate video (see ua-cam.com/video/EFOCUxh-WiA/v-deo.html). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!🤗
Hi Clara, yes I think so. I have not tried it with magic loop at the point of doing decreases towards the end of the hat. But I think you should be able to (just keep the stitch marker to know start of next row). Do let me know if it works. Thanks and best wishes😊
Thanks so much, Uttama! Catching up on my UA-cam comments after being off it for a while and just seeing your question. You may need to play around a bit on the division of stitches if they are other than 64 stitches. In the video description, towards the bottom, I provide info on alternate number of stitches (my pattern should be adaptable that way, provided stitches are increased by a count of 16 stitches - so like 80 st, 96 st, etc). If your stitch count is higher than 64 sts, but not quite by an additional "16 stitches", then the stitches need to be an even number and you may need to adjust the dividing of stitches accordingly (which can be challenging with the brioche stitch). If you have fewer stitches, say 60 sts, then can divide them into 20 sts on each needle (further dividing by 10 sts on each needle - so total of 6 sections of 10 sts each) and try to follow the pattern accordingly. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for your projects!
Hi Janet, the pattern is in the video description (see video info below the video, click on the dropdown icon). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊
Thanks, Vidya. If you are knitting a hat, then the pattern I provided is for knitting with a round needle or can use 4 double-pointed needles to knit right from the start. To knit the hat with just 2 needles, you would need to knit it in the flat and then do decreases and seam (join) it lengthwise. I am afraid that will require a different pattern than the one shown/described in this video. I hope to post a video in the near future for knitting a flat hat and perhaps you can adapt from that. Thanks for watching and best wishes!
This is a great pattern! I always have trouble decreasing with brioche hats and your pattern is really nice. How can I substitute this pattern for chunky yarn? How many rows of decrease should I do?
Thanks (: Yes, decreasing in brioche can be a challenge sometimes and you may have to try a few times before you get the look you want. Depending on how chunky the yarn you use is, I would suggest first knitting up a swatch using the 1-color brioche pattern on a few stitches (odd number; link to video: ua-cam.com/video/4E0rLm3_jXU/v-deo.html). This will give you the gauge and you can then calculate accordingly the number of stitches to cast on for the hat. Target a hat of 16 inches in the round, when unstretched; that should stretch out to about 20-21 sts when you put the hat (can cast on more for a looser fit). So, if your swatch of say 13 sts, measures 4-5 inches, then you can cast on say 48 sts for the hat. I would then suggest doing the decreases from Row 1-4 onwards. May wish to skip Rows 5-6 and then do one more repeat. Again, depending on the actual stitches cast at the start, may need to play around a bit. Would suggest adding in a proactive lifeline just before starting the decreases (link to video: ua-cam.com/video/hLdNBLuC1sY/v-deo.html). That way, you can try the decreases and it will be easier to remove them, pick up stitches, and restart the decreases, if needed. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have questions. Thanks again for watching my video! Best wishes.
hello!!! im a novice knitter, your youtube tutorial is excellent, im able to understand it, is it possible just use two strands double knit yarn? and still casting on 64 stitches? thank you
Thanks, Tan Su Min! The brioche hat is quite a thick hat and knitting with 2 strands would make it even thicker. So would recommend only knitting with 1 strand of a yarn. If you still want to knit with 2 strands, you can try a small swatch first to check gauge and see if 64 st still work. The finished hat size of 17-18 inches should stretch to fit adult head of about 21 inches. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊
@@tansumin7430 The number of stitches would depend on the type of yarn and needle size. Highly recommend making a small sample by casting on about 11 sts in 1-color brioche with US 7 (4.5 mm) needles and determining the gauge. If 11 sts comes close to 2.5 inches or so, then 64 sts may be enough. If size is less than that, then may need more stitches (can increase to 80 sts for my exact pattern to work). If sample gauge is more than 2.5 inches, then can try decreasing needle size to say US 5 (3.75 mm). Hope this helps. Also see my notes in the video description. Thanks.
your videos are well done. Your instructions are clear. Thank you. How many stitches would you suggest casting on for a child's hat. (5 years old) and how many inches until I start the crown? If you wouldn't mind answering. Thank you.
Thanks for the lovely comment Marjorie! Typically, hat circumference for a 5-year-old would be about 18 inches or so. Since the brioche stitch is very stretchy, you could perhaps knit one that measures say 16-17 inches (of course, an actual measurement would be best). The number of stitches would depend on the yarn and needle size you use. If you choose medium weight yarn, would suggest making a small swatch in 1-color using a US size 5 or 6 needle and casting on an odd number of stitches (link for 1-color brioche video: ). Knit about 10 rows and then measure the width. So if you cast on say 15 stitches and swatch measures let's say 4 inches in width, then you will need to cast on 60 sts (15 × 4 = 60), which will give you a 16 inch circumference for the hat. Note that depending on yarn and the number of stitches you calculate, if fewer than 60 stitches are needed, then you may wish to just knit it on double-pointed needles all the way. For the hat height, would suggest knitting a total height of about 7-8 inches, so can start decreases after hat measures 5-6 inches (better to have a slightly longer hat as you can fold it for a nice brim, if needed). Hope this helps, but let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching and best wishes on the project! 😊
Hi Beryl, for the cowl, it would depend on the type of yarn you are using and the needle size. Typically, the cowl length should be at least 21-24 inches. For this brioche pattern, it will also depend on whether you want the pattern for form on the width of the cowl (ie, you would cast on stitches for the desired width of the cowl and then knit it at least about 21 inches long and then seam the end) or if you want the pattern to form on the length of the cowl (in which case, you would likely knit it in the round and need to determine the number of stitches that will give you approx 21 inches length). Since you are commenting not the hat pattern, I think you mean to do the latter. In that case, I would suggest knitting a small swatch with the 1-color brioche stitch using your yarn and appropriate needles, typically 4-6 mm if worsted weight yarn (for link to that video and pattern description in the video field, click here ). Then, a bit of math to figure out the stitches. For example, if you cast on say 15 stitches and it gives you a width of approx 4 inches or so, then you would need about 60-70 stitches for at least 20-21 inches (better to have the cowl a bit looser than tighter). The height of the cowl can be about 6-7 inches (or as desired). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes with the project! Do let me know how it goes (:
Great video on brioche knitting. However, I find brioche decrease very complicated at the end to finish the hat. Is it possible to decrease it like non-brioche stitches to finish the hat? Any suggestions how to do that?
Great question, Lakshmi! I agree that decreasing in brioche stitches can be a challenge. I have not really tried other techniques to advise you well on that, but the only thing I can think of right now is perhaps to convert them to regular rib stitch (so once knit up in brioche, before starting decreases, do a K1, P1 round, where you convert the brioche stitch to a regular knit (or purl stitch) and then start doing decreases with those stitches. I'll have to try this out and will let you know if it works (or if a better way). Thanks for watching and best wishes (:
Thanks, Kath! It is actually US size 9 (5.5 mm), which would be UK size 5. You could also try using a UK size 7 (4.5 mm; which is also a US size 7). I just started knitting a 2-color brioche hat with the size 7 needles and same yarn and the gauge is pretty close. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching my video! Cheers 😊
Its beautiful...how many stitches required for 4 to 5 year old baby hat. I want to start knitting this hat as soon as possible so plz try to reply fast...waiting for ur reply from India 😊
That's awesome, Kanwaljit! For knitting a hat for a 4-5 year old child, you first need to measure the head circumference (where the hat will sit, over the years). This can vary from child to child; typically for 3-10 year old kids, the head circumference can range from 17-20 inches. Once you have this measurement, then you can subtract a couple inches from that to get the desired hat circumference that you must knit (since the brioche hat has a lot of stretch and so knitting it a bit smaller will be better for a snugger fit). To calculate the number of stitches, you will need to knit up a swatch in 1-color brioche using the yarn you plan to use and your needles (for swatch, cast on an odd number; link to 1-color brioche video: ua-cam.com/video/4E0rLm3_jXU/v-deo.html). This will give you the gauge and you can then calculate accordingly the number of stitches to cast on for the hat. Let's assume the circumference you need to knit is 15 inches (so that it stretches to about 17-18 inches). So, if your swatch of say 15 sts measures 5 inches in width, then you can cast on 48 sts for the hat (slightly more than 15 x 3). Then you can start knitting in the hat pattern and after you have knit a few rows, you will have a good idea of the circumference (can try it on the child to see if the fit is good; if not, may need to adjust the stitches). Again, depending on the actual stitches cast at the start, may need to play around a bit when it comes to the decreases (these are always a bit complex in brioche); if you cast on 48, 64, 80, sts, etc, then the pattern will work as written in description.. Would suggest adding in a proactive lifeline just before starting the decreases (link to proactive lifeline video: ua-cam.com/video/hLdNBLuC1sY/v-deo.html). That way, you can try the decreases and it will be easier to remove them, pick up stitches, and restart the decreases, if needed. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have questions. Thanks again for watching my video! Best wishes and Happy New Year!
Knittycat's Knits I tried casting on 48 sts in the round but they are not long enough to join. Any advice? I made one hat already but is a bit too loose on my little one. I love this pattern and your video is made very well. So easy to follow.
Thanks for reaching out and agree, 48 sts may not be enough to stretch in the round (depending on yarn). One option is to use double-pointed needles (of the desired needle size) to knit the hat. You could divide 16 sts onto each of 3 needles and then knit the hat per the pattern . When doing the hat decreases, we transfer to DPNs anyway, so in your case, you would just be knitting on DPNs from the start. Hope that helps; I am sure the hat will look just as great as when knit on a circ needle. Thanks for watching and trying out the pattern! If you try the DPN way, do let me know how it worked out. Best wishes! 😊
Good question, Kate. It would depend on the yarn you are using. A medium weight yarn may be fine but a bulky yarn may not work well with US size 5. I have knit hats in this pattern with US 5 circ needles with the Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn, where the gauge (in 1 color brioche st) was 9 st = ~2 inches; I had cast on 64 inches for one hat and 72 inches for another (made a slightly looser fitting hat). So suggest checking the gauge with your yarn and casting stitches accordingly. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊

So helpful!! Is there a pattern available? I used this decrease on a different pattern, but it worked out great.
@@KnittycatsKnits Thank you! I didn't realize that the full pattern was in the description 😃
It would be great to show the decrease rows continental style.
Happy New Year!!😀🎉
@@jackfntwist I was looking through my posted videos and saw that I had actually posted a video on figuring out rows in 2-color brioche. Check it out at ua-cam.com/video/jwsqN6mADDQ/v-deo.html. Hope this helps😊
Where can I buy a written instruction for this hat
No worries @@KnittycatsKnits! You are very welcome, and Cheers back at you!!
if I am knitting with two colors do I just alternate the colors each round during decrease?
oh found the video! THANKS you are amazing
Glad you found the two-color brioche hat video, Clara. Note that I have shown the hat decreases for that one in a separate video (see ua-cam.com/video/EFOCUxh-WiA/v-deo.html). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!🤗
can I use the magic loop instead of dpns
Hi Clara, yes I think so. I have not tried it with magic loop at the point of doing decreases towards the end of the hat. But I think you should be able to (just keep the stitch marker to know start of next row). Do let me know if it works. Thanks and best wishes😊
A great video . My question is that what will be the division of stitches in double pointed needles other than 64 stitches brioche hat?
@@KnittycatsKnits Thank you madam.
I would be grateful for the pattern? thanks
Hi Janet, the pattern is in the video description (see video info below the video, click on the dropdown icon). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊
Excellent work mam. Can we also try the same with 2 separate needles instead of round needles.
@@KnittycatsKnits thanks for your reply, if im using one strand of double knit yarn, how many stitches should i cast on? thank you
@@tansumin7430 The number of stitches would depend on the type of yarn and needle size. Thanks.
@@KnittycatsKnits thank you 😘

your videos are well done.
@@KnittycatsKnits Thank you kindly for such a detailed response. I appreciate your expertise and willingness to respond.
Hello.mam..your.video.is clear..your.instructions.is..well.done
Thanks, Om! Best wishes😊
would like to try a cowl about how many sitches
would you think I should cast on? Thank You BNC
Knittycat's Knits thank you so much. Love your videos
Thanks for watching and happy knitting 😊
Easy instructions thanks. Is that number 9 needle UK ?
Thanks, Kath! It is actually US size 9 (5.5 mm), which would be UK size 5. You could also try using a UK size 7 (4.5 mm; which is also a US size 7). I just started knitting a 2-color brioche hat with the size 7 needles and same yarn and the gauge is pretty close. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching my video! Cheers 😊
Knittycat's Knits thanks looking forward to making this hat, looks a quick knit.
Thank you!
Will it work if you used size 5 circle needles

@@katekirk3770 Hi Kate, in the video, just after 5 min, I demonstrate how to join the yarn in the round as you start the set-up row. Pls see that part again and hope it helps.
