- A short tutorial on building your own lyrics monitor. I should have posted video on the entire construction of the cabinet but to be honest I wasn’t sure if the project was going to work out as well as it did. Not a difficult project. The measurements are all laid out in the video. I had some of the cuts done at my local Lowes and then I made the diagonal cuts with a jigsaw. It's really not that hard if you have some skills with wood working.
Do you know how to get that Onsong App for Android? I got jerked around years ago by US Cellular and Apple and put my iPad away in disgust after several failed attempts to get it up and running. Unfortunately Apple wouldn't help bcuz the iPad serial nbr belonged to US Cellular and US was worse than useless if that's even viable. Thanks!

How did u get the monitor to display in portrait mode? I tried to build one but I could only get the video to display in landscape
Real curious, Mark. What if I bought a cheapie projector and placed it inside? Would it project small enough? And could I page turn it.. or am I stuck sticking in a laptop computer?

The page turning comes via the app so I think this could work with a projector. Good luck!
Hey great video. Just one quick question. i noticed you had two cables coming from your ipad mhl junction box thingy. one i assume is the hdmi lead, is the other one powering the ipad? powering both the ipad and external, or something else? cheers! ;)
Correct, One cable out is the HDMI to the monitor/TV and the other is the power to the Ipad. That second cable is a lightning to USB which is plugged in. I believe the cable also powers the lightning to HDMI converter "junction box" as you called it. It's always plugged in when I am using the wedge.
@@markmazur4674 thanks buddy. I have had a right old time getting my set up right. All part of the process I suppose and has been fun.. In the end after buying 3 different 'junction boxes' for my android, I gave up and have gone to mirrorshare with a dongle. Works great and no cables at all from tablet to monitor. But your video inspired me to make my own box. Thanks so much!

Not heavy. Maybe 20 lbs/10kgs?

Built one, a tad smaller and with a 19" Dell screen. However, I am on Android & struggling to get the screen rotated (as onsong is apple) any advice?
My only alternative is using Microsoft PowerPoint for my songs, but that is a bit of a drag.

I’d contact Onsong directly if you are using their app. They were helpful in getting that sorted out.
If you are not using the app, sorry, not sure how to fix it.
The screen rotation is a bit tricky. Go to live settings/external video/stage monitor/screen rotation. I rotated mine 270 degrees bit experiment with that and see if it works for you.
Hey man, how did you get the frame to display in portrait mode? Is it because you’re using a tv vs a monitor?
It’s tricky but of you go to live settings/external video/stage monitor and rotate your screen (I used 270 degrees) you can rotate your image. Try that!

Did you need a monitor that has "Portrait Mode" or can any monitor work that way with an iPad or Android tablet?
Any monitor should work. It takes a bit of figuring out with the OnSong app, but there customer service can assist with that if you don’t figure it out. The app sends the signal/image in portrait mode I believe.
thought you, ve done a super job there mark, considering the stage prompter company makes one precisely the same for £800 so you've saved a fortune! well done... You say you can turn the page with the foot switch but can you start the next song audibly or do you have to start the music separately--cheers
I recently bought a Flic 2 that I stick to the side of my guitar. The Flic is programmed to advance to the next song on a double press, start the scrolling on a single press, and pause the scrolling on a longer press. I use the foot pedal to page ahead if my scroll speed is off. You never have to touch your IPad the whole set!

@@markmazur4674 so basically you use the footswitch and butter together- so you programme the butter or syn it with the promter I guess---
@@popupsinger I use both. The foot switch pages forward or backwards, sometimes my scroll is not correct so I need to scroll forward usually. The Flic 2 advances to the next song with a double press. A single press starts the scroll and a press and hold pauses the scroll. The Flic 2 is a great option.

It’s tricky. Call OnSong support. They walked me through it and we had it figured out in a few minutes.

Still cant get the screen to turn upwards like yours using same as you on everything except using a 20 inch smart Tv

Why not just put the iPad on a mic stand?
I do that for our acoustic show, but for our rock show it gives me the option of being more mobile on stage
ipad on a mic stand is a big buzz kill in terms of engagement.. a show is basically an illusion and an ipad on a mic stand kills the illusion particularly for a high energy gig.. it's fine for an acoustic gig in like a vineyard or wine room where you're just background music
That may be true if you’re standing there staring at the iPad. Our repertoire includes about 150 songs. Try remembering every arrangement and lyric for well over a hundred songs when you’re 70. Most songs I don’t need the iPad, but some I have the arrangement and chord progression on one screen and may need to glance at it from time to time.
I use SongSheet…our 40+ song set lists are on it, which is handy. We played a gig and, when we got there, they asked us to play “soft” music in the first set. We created a new first set, moved songs from other sets and added 8 songs we hadn’t played in months to that first set.
I don’t know what people in the audience think, but only twice in the past two years has anyone mentioned the iPads. They were impressed that we could “read music” like the “symphony” musicians.
There’s a cover band group on Facebook that has debated this hundreds of times. I’d say it’s at least 2:1 in the opinion that iPads are OK and probably higher if HOW they’re used isn’t obtrusive.
Plus, increasingly, bands are using iPads to connect to PAs where they can adjust their mix, at least in their own monitors. Our PA has that capability but we’re not there yet.
