I had one dog who learned this in minutes and mastered it moving forward. I have a pit bull mix that is very head strong. She walks wonderfully until she sees others dogs. I am going to keep working with her.

Hey will, I find your content very helpful. My sister rescued a 7 y 50lb. poodle mutt last year and I’ve been working with him when I’m in town. I take him with me on runs but he is an unrepentant tugger. Even with a slip it made me nervous how much pressure he would put on his trachea (from his force, not mine). It got to the point where I was no longer taking him out with me, although it bummed the poor boy out when I would tie up my running shoes but leave without him. I was never comfortable using anything “negative” with him for fear of injury.
But I’ve been watching your content for a bit and the way you explain the training process clearly (but with compassion and dog-love) gave me the confidence to go on some easy walks with him with a slip chain. He is a different dog. He never came close to hurting himself on the chain and it just clicked for him as to what I need from him. We now go out most days with a standard lead and it is an absolute delight.
I really appreciate how you present a full range of techniques for different issues even when some of those “negative” techniques get you in the dog house with some internet kooks. Keep it up my man. You can teach old dogs and new owners proven tricks.

Hi will, i have a lab x welsh shepherd, he is 4 months and is already just a few steps from being the perfect dog. Only, i am struggling with a couple of things, he is extremely exitable and inquisitive, which means i dont know how to keep his attention even with high value treats. Secondly he is reactive but not in an aggressive way, he wants to play with every dog he sees and i dont know how to stop it happening. He is good with people and cyclists etc, just dogs. Can you do a video that adresses these issues for a puppy, i know he is capable, but its me who needs the training. Thanks

Hi, your method does work with a fairly calm dog, but my dog is crazy as soon as we get outside, I’ve tried your method and used treats which she is mad for because she is food obsessed, she’s a 2 and half year old rottie and all my other rotties have been fantastic on and off lead. She has a secured field run every day with her older sister, but on the lead she pulls like mad, jumps, twists around, sometimes makes an excited noise constantly. I can’t take to a private trainer as the fees are extortionate and she doesn’t trust anyone else. I used to love my long evening walks with all the others but feel dread taking her out, even though I don’t get angry with her and stay calm but absolutely nothing stops this behaviour. She also barks at other dogs and children, but she is not in anyway aggressive. She’s just a very hyperactive excitable dog and loses all sense of good behaviour when walking. She has even pulled me so hard and fast she gave me a rotator cuff injury. Really don’t know what to do, any advise or tips you could offer me would be so appreciated
    Thank you

Yep, if you're out of control before the walk even starts, you're doomed. I like Doggy Dan's advice for this. Basically, every stage of the walk (including things like putting on the leash, or opening the door) doesn't proceed until the dog is calm. The first few walks may take a long time to even leave the house, but your dog will get it eventually. I would also suggest harnessing that food drive and doing some leash pressure drills inside the house, then in the yard, then in an empty park .

I got a pinch collar for my dog who's a puller. I know what people think of them, but they do not hurt when worn and used properly. I've literally been wearing the one I got him that's too big, and I find it super comfy actually. And he's become an absolute gentleman on walks now. Night and day difference.

🤔 I dunno if possible have you ever tried those Dr Ho tens machines that cause a lil muscle spasm??
A really good electric collar uses the same tech but at a level that you couldn't detect if you put it on yourself.
The reason it works is it grabs the attention of the dog and distracts it from what's exciting it. Its like tapping the dog on the shoulder especially important when the dog no longer has any leash sensitivity. Shock collar is a crazy Karen term. Call it a remote nudge collar😅.

I'd start by luring the dog in heel position inside the house. I broke my dog of leash chewing by marking with a "No" and applying slowly increasing vertical leash pressure, should work for gator rolls too. Sometimes you have to just adopt a "Walk or be dragged" attitude.

Funny how hard it is for me as a human to learn this stuff. It doesn’t come naturally, at any rate. The dog needs hundreds or thousands of successful repetitions to learn properly, which is tough on impatient humans. Turns out I need similarly high repetition over time to learn good methodology and mechanics.
    Thanks, Will.

Hi Will, I'm having a few issues with my JRT. She's 5 years old and unfortunately has IBD, so we haven't yet found a treat we can use that doesn't make her ill and training has been a challenge.
When walking, she pulls and can be aggressive to other dogs when on the lead (better when off, but can still get growly and overly assertive). She barks continuously at visitors she doesn't know at my house and winds herself up so much it affects her stomach. Vet bills have been so expensive that I can't afford a trainer :( But, i feel this is making us both miserable and contributing to her illness. Is there a way to train her without treats?? Help!

Is there a toy she really likes? A 10 second game of tug works as a reward for my dog. I've seen videos where the Upstate Canine guy (trains with and similar to Will) does an entire training session with a single piece of freeze dried beef liver, only allowing the dog to lick or nibble a tiny bit of the treat each time he wants to reward. HTH

Slip leads are frowned upon here in the Netherlands. I really can't get my girlfriend to buy one as it's not good for the neck of a dog. We've got a 40kg big dog that pulls really hard and I'm (115kg) not even able to hold her.
What's the best to tackle this?

    • @FenrirAldebrand
      @FenrirAldebrand 5 місяців тому

Prong collars are actually much, much safer than slip collars/leads. Gotta say I legit wore my dog's prong/pinch collar I got him for a good hour (which is way longer than he'd ever be wearing it) and it never got painful. Even when pulling on it. My 6 month old Belgian Malinois is about 50 pounds (22 ish kg, literally all muscle) and he used to pull so hard he'd almost pull me to the ground, and/or dislocate my shoulder. He is an absolute gentleman on walks now. No problems at all with pulling.

Does anyone have any tips for a dog who refuses to wear a slip lead? I've tried to put a slip lead on my dog but he gets extremely aggressive. I've recently tried a gentle leader but he reacts the same way so I ended up returning them.
He tries to attack, jump, roll, flips in the air, holds the leash down with his paws, etc
He currently uses a harness. I've looked into training classes for him but they quoted me $5,000.(They called it "Alligator rolling") He only acts this way on walks. I feel like I'm at my wits end. 😥 (He's a 9 month old (neutered) Shiba Inu)

    • @kevinobrien1026
      @kevinobrien1026 6 місяців тому +1

Just an idea, but have you tried making the loop of the slip really big, then putting a high value reward (piece of meat) just on the other end so that at least their snout has to go through?
Do this for a week, or however long it takes. No walks with it, just enough to get the treat. Then, when this is reliable, increase the distance so their head must be through the loop. Then, when that works, reduce the size of the loop.
It might take time, but that is behaviorism. Behavioral change is slow. Rushing through the steps will strengthen an adverse reaction.
This approach will give incentive for your dog to put their head into the loop, and keeping a controlled pace without forcing it will instill more trust in the process.
I had to work with my pit mix on this, and now he basically pushes his head into the slip lead loop on his own when it's time for a walk.
Whatever you find that works, I wish you luck!

Doggy Dan has some good tips for this. Basically, each step of the walk (including things like attaching the leash, and opening the door) doesn't progress until the dog is calm. The first few walks might take a while to even get outside, but the dog WILL learn. Once outside, I also like to stand still until my dog gives me 5 seconds of eye contact, with a loose leash. Then we walk a circle with my dog on the inside, so he has to yield to me.

I don't understand 'loose lead walking'
What loose lead walking also seems to do, in addition to the loose lead, is that it seems to condition sniffing away totally. The dogs seem to not sniff and smell around. In these videos at least. They seem to be conditioned to focus on the owner all the time.
Sniffing is the main way for a dogs nervous system to recover. Sniffing is absolutely crucial for recovery from stress. The more dog can sniff around, the less stressed it will be.
So are the walks for the owner to enjoy and recover and the dog just comes along to so what the owner wants, or are walks an enjoyment and a recovering activity for the dog?
A dog isn't excited to go outside to stroll around the neighbourhood along the owner. It's excited to go sniffing and smelling around.

Will needs to do more videos where he trains his clients. They all start out thinking they're doing exactly what Will does, then he fixes their errors. Video one of your sessions, and review it, asking yourself:
Are you starting your training somewhere with no distractions?
Is your slip/prong fitted snugly behind the ears?
Are you giving a verbal cue and turning at the very instant that the dog's front legs get in front of yours?
Is your leash pop timed to happen at the exact moment the dog is hitting the end of the leash, and does it match the intensity of the dog?
Is the leash going tight only for a fraction of a second?
Are you mixing in some turns where you cut in front of your dog?

There's only a finite amount of things to train and doing the same video explained in a different way is helpful.

You wouldn't believe how often and, at times, how helpful repeating a point is until it starts to stick. Some people get it first time others after the 100th time. I imagine the vast majority of people don't want a dog that does scent work, retrieves or competitions simply a dog that will walk loosely on leash is enough for many.
