Perfect crossover - bicycling and droning! As a long time bicycler, photographer, and generally old man new to drones and DJI, I found this spell binding as well as Active Track educational. Thank you!!
You make the best active track reviews, thank you so much. It's incredible how DJI is way bigger than skydio and don't have nearly as sweet of an obstacle avoidance system.
People who buy DJI drones don’t care about that feature. Some never even use it because the reason they buy it is to have premium camera. When ever I do a shoot where I need to follow someone i just highlight them but do the controlling my self since then I’ll make it look more cinematic. Skydio is for people who don’t care about cinematography and just need something to follow. In that case skydio is perfect the camera is good enough for UA-cam posts and social media.
Finally DJI has given us a more accessible way to enjoy the things we like most about the Mavic 3! A good tracking system, high-grade camera specs and other smart features... we're gonna go a long way with that
Thanks for the awesome Active Track review! To be fair, the unedited shots look already good, specially on the parts when the drone's tracking on the side. this is one of the best tracking systems I've seen on drones so far
Props for syncing your entire speech at the beginning, complete with hitting all the hand motions the same as in studio. And for just the most fun reviews of this drone.
Absolutely great content - it’s clear that active track for cycling is still at beta at best - probably a 4/10 overall in terms of cycling speed, faffing about and collisions. Exciting for the future.
Thanks again. I have seen a couple other reviews eg DanTV, in which they test Active Trac while walking. WALKING! I mean who gives a toss about walking. You are the only one that puts the drone in realistic situations AND compares it to its competitor Skydio 2. Well done and thank you!
Awesome video thanks. The Classic is finally here. The Classic is the best Mavic 3. I now have three favorite drones. DJI FPV DJI Air 2S DJI Mavic 3 Classic. Thanks. Best video.
I have experience with Dji air 2s. I tested the active track a lot. On an active track, the "brake" mode of the sensor is safer, more conservative in maneuvers, better tracking, less loss of the object, compared to "bypass". Despite the name "brake" drone does not stop, on the active track it flies around obstacles in this mode. Accidents always happen in the "bypass". "Bypass" is good for actions when we have open space. It makes faster, wider and wilder maneuvers. If we need to fly somewhere in a narrow place, or we have a lot of items, just mode"brake"!!, because in "bypass" mode will be crash. I think it's the same on Mavic 3. Because air2s already had a great active track, but no one found this nuance with the modes
I tried active track in way tougher and harder places and it preformed so good i think its because the updates that it got i know that last update was i think 6 month ago but yeah that made that tracking better
I’ve been using this really seriously with my Mavic 3 recently and just getting it to go into active track is sometimes so hard and always wants to kick in the spotlight mode! What’s up with that I’m gonna do a tutorial on the soon too.
@11:30 although I agree that it’s really bad activetrack using just the camera withthis vs Skydio, the reason it probably clipped the tree is because the tree was moving from the wind and maybe moved in the direction of the drone at the last second as it was passing.
Obstacle avoidance has been updated since this was shot and is better now. Same with tracking capability mainly speeds at 40mph+ not generating any errors anymore.
I keep saying this... The biggest problem for DJI drones and Active Track is the algorithm. You can clearly see from the icon on the screen that it expects you to be on foot. Which, makes it expect certain speeds, direction change capabilities, etc. You are constantly "surprising" the drone, in a way. When DJI drones track vehicles they use different parameters and distances. If you went down a similar path in a car, the drone would react differently and potentially do a better job. Either DJI needs to improve the firmware to recognize bicycles, scooters, one wheels, etc or allow consumers to choose themselves. Until then, their drones are always going to struggle in your "tests", always. All that said, they'll never be on par with Skydio for tracking. Simply put, they aren't really trying to be... Active Track on DJI drones is primarily meant to be an assistance to an operator flying the drone and tracking a subject, not for individuals to track themselves. Technically, tracking yourself (in or on a vehicle, especially) is illegal in most countries because you aren't truly "in command" of the aircraft. I don't see DJI putting in the effort and expense to try and catch up with Skydio. Considering all the updates, including the most recent ones, they don't seem to be too concerned with tracking. Just like Skydio doesn't seem too concerned with improving the hardware, transmission or camera quality. They are all about tracking, key frames, automation, etc... DJI is all about image quality, transmission and flight time.
While I agree with much that you’re saying, understand that DJI simply consolidated the person icon, it used to show a bike. Their marketing launch video for the Mavic 3 and Active Track shows a mountain biker as the primary human that they track, the second was a woman running that placed the remote down to track herself. As for command of aircraft, the controller is directly in front of me. Per ESA and FAA rules, neither actually define command, other than to say ‘operator’. Which I am operating.
Very Useful. Not sure its worth the upgrade from Air 2 other than the upgraded camera? Wonder when DJI will have Active Trac that is much closer to Skydio 2. Thanks well done!
I really don't trust the mavic 3 with active track I took mini in some quite open woods and was walking then I turned towards it and the thing was erratic and straight in to a tree and yet took the mini 3 same place done the same thing and yet performed absolutely brilliant although it doesn't have side sensors it turns quite tight so unless I was in really open spaces with the mavic 3 I wouldn't trust it and yet I did see another youtuber on here today and he was making out it was brilliant although he was walking you can definitely tell he was sponsored by dji and unlike your self its all real and I've seen a bunch of your videos and wind tests and I just love that you tell it the way it is. Thanks for sharing great video look forward to some more 😁👌👍🇬🇧
You should make a video comparing all DJI active track drones starting with DJI active track 2.0 on mavic 2 pro and going up to 3.0-4.0-and 5.0 on mavic 3. Would be very nice to see how all the drones compare and how DJI has gotten better with obstacle avoidance.
That bicycle mount is extremely dangerous. If your bike goes down or you have a blowout and that controller hits the ground and points your sticks in a direction that causes your drone to crash then you’re screwed. Great video. Proof is in the pudding.
I think the reason why it hit the branches at 4:48 was because the branches were tiny, I think that could be a suggestion to improve on for DJI but otherwise having owned a Mavic 3 myself, this drone can bypass many visible and dominant objects effectively! Espectially after that firmware update from a few months ago. Also @DC Rainmaker, where is this bike track? It's soo beautiful! I'd love to ride this track one day!
My fear on the Mavic 3 classic is that it will also be stripped down of the intelligent functions that are on the M3 and end up underperforming! Great to know that though it's been cheaper the drone's still as cool as the M3
Not sure why the 3 classic crashed. I thought It would not hit anything. Maybe the settings or something. BUT I do like the 3 classic. You got some amazing shots on your demo ride.
That back corner shot with he windmills looks fantastic. Little disappointed with some of the tracking AI, but still love the drone otherwise. Whenever I crash/destroy my m2pro this may be the model I grab
Perhaps they need to leverage better use of telephoto lenses so the drone can punch into a shot for framing but stay further away from trees in those higher elevation shots. Good review. Thanks !
Nice test. I wonder if You had it to nifty could it be even better? I think the air moved the tree too fast and hit it because it saw it as orange and it became red too fast. Eitherway DJI is giving priority to do the video correct POI in ths example and in difficult situations this priority sends obstacle avoidance to a second priority. If it had a beacon then things could be much diffirent.
finally found this, you also have active track to mini 4 pro 2 days ago, and it seems mini 4 pro performs well. Do you think mavic 3 classic and mini 4 pro is the same in active track and obstacle avoidance
Ray fair play for climbing up that tree 🌲 in your cycling shoes. Not the easiest with them cleats. As usual great video, great breakdown on the tracking of the classic looks like a great drone to get. Your still flying your avata.
Would have been good to see how the tracking was from the front, and low. Something my Skydio 2 does very well, but doesn't have the image quality of the M3P.
Maybe you answered this somewhere already, in that case sorry for asking again. How do you carry your drone stuff around on the bike? You don’t seem to have a backpack on on the video…
Why isn't DJI improving their sensors or active tracking to avoid collision. I'm also a cyclist, I would like DJI to be as good as skydio. As always Ray post the first video about what ever I wanted to know.
Skydio is still King in Active tracking. Unfortunately I sold mine to a friend in UK. It doesn't do well in hot tropical climate areas like Seychelles. I hope Skydio improves it's cooling features, camera quality and flight time. Then I will definitely buy one from them again. Nice video. DJI still has a lot to work on with their active track feature. Their not that far back
That’s interesting. I always assumed cooling wouldn’t be an issue in drones because they have a constant flow of air past them. I never would have thought of that, thanks for the heads up.
@@shibasurfing it's the battery temperature that you need to really watch out for. With Skydio it tells you to land asap regardless the battery percentage left. DJI on the overhand doesn't, you fly it till the battery starts to swell. Sealed battery is a big problem. Best battery designs so far is Phantom 4 series and Evo 2 series. They can be flown in high temperature climate as there are cooling vents between the cells
Indeed, still very much the best tracking. I could deal with the heat issues myself, since that's not an issue here. But for me, the biggest challenge with the Skydio is simply the image quality and size (inability to fold up). Here's to hoping to a new model!
Only advice I would offer for active track is keep the drone low, that way when it hits a tree or object you don't have too climb or have too much stress getting it back.

Nice tree climbing skills😎
I don’t think I can comfortably say that DJI have made much progress with their object avoidance since the Air2S.
Hahaha...in cycling shoes/cleats no less! Yeah, it's gotten better, but it still seems to make some pretty big errors.
Well, obstacle avoidance is a sustaining function just like Tesla's autopilot. It is not ment for full autonomous flight.
again you never fail to inform us with the real deal thanks buddy
As always Ray - super entertaining! Love the dialogue between you and “little buddy” 😂

When a new product comes out…!!! I can’t wait the time till you review it.
Awesome work, I love it.
This guys makes me want to get a drone ASAP! Awesome video bro!
Thanks for the great work with demoing active tracking. I didn’t think I wanted to see something like this until I watched the video.
Keep it up.
Thanks Kapil, appreciate it!!!
Take a look at the DC Rainmakers test of the Skydio 2+.. Still the benchmark for DJI to beat..

Very informative video Ray! thanks man!

DJI should be embarrassed by the quality of their active track in a flagship drone
Absolutely
The fact that it looses him and spends 30 seconds circling a bare spot of road is testament to that.
This is hardly a flagship drone. 😂

Thanks for this great helpful video. What is the reference of the k-edge mount you used to attach the RC to your bike?
Great video!!! How did you record yourself
This is awesome!
I'd have expected DJI to map this whole area to the mm by now, with the amount of dji drones leaving marks on these trees that is.
Hmm. I think active track good for open area, unless you always control by your self. Or need some improvements from all obstacle
Nice kontent bro, very good, good job👍
