I wonder how the game artists made these things in 2004. A mod with more detail would look amazing but probably run slow. I heard that the Source engine uses the CPU not GPU for graphics a lot so that is why speed is the same across many many computers with amazing new GPUs. I get higher and more stable FPS in newer games because of this.
No, it uses the GPU for graphics when available. The reasons you get higher FPS in newer games include: -better SIMD resources available -shader programming of the GPU -modern graphics APIs, especially Vulkan/DX12 which supports multicore rendering -multithreaded processes

This is what happens when you kill the zombie but the headcrab survives.

They can't, this is a mod. It was scrapped in the development but can still be recreated in the Source SDK with loads of coding.
