I want to share my experience of solving the problem of starting and maintaining romantic and platonic relationships with women and with men (I am straight, so in the case of men it's only platonic). I've tried to change myself because I thought that people do not want to be in any kind of relationship with me. Which means something is not enough or wrong with my perception, knowledge and competence. Turns out it's both - people want to know me, but I was not mature and competent enough for healthy, sincere relationships. (Don't confuse gaining knowledge and competence with pretending to be someone you are not). I had severe social anxiety and lacked social experience, knowledge and competence. 7-8 years later here I am, 21 years old, I feel comfortable and confident in my own skin. What I found out is that I am not interested in people. I want to have relationships, but on practice I don't feel interested in people. So out of this position I understood that when you are not interested in people, they will not be interested in you, because there is no connection. It means that when I approached women in the past I was interested not in them, but my dreams about having a girlfriend. So there is no connection and no interest in me from women's side. It doesn't mean that I am not enough. The problem lies in my intentions and attitude. Why do my attitude and perception are like that? Haven't figured out yet, but on my way. I guess it's about my life long negative experience and trauma because of me being kind of different from most people in my surroundings. Stay strong

I want to share my experience of solving the problem of starting and maintaining romantic and platonic relationships with women and with men (I am straight, so in the case of men it's only platonic). I've tried to change myself because I thought that people do not want to be in any kind of relationship with me. Which means something is not enough or wrong with my perception, knowledge and competence. Turns out it's both - people want to know me, but I was not mature and competent enough for healthy, sincere relationships. (Don't confuse gaining knowledge and competence with pretending to be someone you are not). I had severe social anxiety and lacked social experience, knowledge and competence. 7-8 years later here I am, 21 years old, I feel comfortable and confident in my own skin. What I found out is that I am not interested in people. I want to have relationships, but on practice I don't feel interested in people. So out of this position I understood that when you are not interested in people, they will not be interested in you, because there is no connection. It means that when I approached women in the past I was interested not in them, but my dreams about having a girlfriend. So there is no connection and no interest in me from women's side. It doesn't mean that I am not enough. The problem lies in my intentions and attitude. Why do my attitude and perception are like that? Haven't figured out yet, but on my way. I guess it's about my life long negative experience and trauma because of me being kind of different from most people in my surroundings. Stay strong

I think that the idea that men need to sort of "sneak up" gradually with subtle sexual undertones is largely a product of American post-puritanical feelings of guilt about sex in general by both sexes. I'm from the U.S., but my understanding of the way Europeans communicate so casually about sex is a clue to what has happened in America. We shouldn't have to "sneak up" on the subject.
