- It's a former RAF base - deep in the Essex countryside - but it now accommodates hundreds of people who are seeking asylum in the UK. Many of them have told us that conditions at Wethersfield are intolerable, leading to regular suicide attempts and self harm, and allegations of abuse by guards.

The Home Office and the private contractor Clearsprings told us the welfare of people housed there was of the utmost priority.
Our communities editor, Darshna Soni has made contact with several people detained at the centre and has this exclusive report.

Not always kept in the same centre. Especially children. Children are only permitted to be detained in detention centres in the UK for up to 72 hours - if with family members. Unaccompanied children can only be detained for up to 24 hours.
There is one family detention centre in the UK for men, women & their children ( but only very short term for kids as noted above, just prior to deportation I think?)
Unaccompanied refugee children are put in to local authority care, usually foster care.
A couple of detention centres that house both men & women, but a few ( or most?) that are separated, for men or women only.
This one is obviously only for men.
At Yarl’s Wood most of the detainees are women.
I think you will find a lot more mothers or couples with young children in the hotels. Which is part of why the recent arson attack on the Rotherham hotel was so horrific. It was attempted murder - including of children. There was at least one young boy of around 7 in the Rotherham hotel when it was attacked. He was seen at the window by a reporter for the Sheffield Tribune.

Though some LGBTQ+ asylum seekers are not feeling war torn countries but countries at which their life is at risk - either execution or imprisonment by the government, or threat of lynching from family or community.
There are also some political asylum seekers, persecuted for political reasons at home ( like Putin with his opponents in Russia).
But the vast majority of asylum seekers are fleeing war.

Myself and my friend are split on this issue of refugees from the small boats. In my opinion, my friend and others who welcome refugees should welcome them into their own homes and foot the bill. I worked so hard, paying council tax, income tax, VAT, NI contribution, now I couldn't get a GP appointment, my GP just told me through a telephone appointment, a scan could be months or over a year.

I doubt the staff are qualified mental health nurses or trained prison guards, just local people on minimum wage in over their heads. Hope they’re in a union.
