Watched a trailer got hella confused and now I know less than going in blind... good job netflix?
Astroboy... did not really vibe with it.
Cyborg 009... that was a bit better; but bad guy was just not interesting enough.
Monster... well I feel Doctor Strange movie tells the main characters story better (the problems of being a good doctor I mean). But like I have a hard time recommending it because it has such weird ass pacing that moves as fast as a slug but rushes all the same. I do like it.
Pluto... confused me by seeming like a cross between the 3 works mentioned above. I guess you could say the movie Terminator but with a Robot 6 like feel...? So you get my confusion right.
Maybe this episode gives me some needed clarity.

Atom is the name by which the Japanese people refer to it, but internationally, it is known as Astro Boy. You can find pictures of Astro Boy on Google; it is a famous manga from 1952.
So, the writer of this story, Naoki Urasawa, asked the mangaka of Astro Boy for permission to use the "base story" from Astro Boy in a murder mystery. And here we are, now able to enjoy "Pluto".

    • @mwatsy

    • @KegOfMeat
      @KegOfMeat 11 місяців тому +15

Well he didn’t ask the mangaka of Astro Boy because Osamu Tezuka has been dead since 1989. He got permission from Tezuka’s estate. Masao Maruyama, The founder of the studio that animated this, Studio M2, also founded Mappa and Madhouse and was friends with Tezuka and is friends with Urasawa as well.

Pluto's story comes from the Astroboy arc called "The World's Strongest Robot" which, in essence, deals with the same thing seen in Pluto except that the latter has more detective things.

I like how despite being written in 2003, the dynamic between north No. 2 and Paul duncan is reminiscent of the discourse surrounding AI generated stuff. Except the difference is, unlike current AI, north No. 2 is actually sentient and is thus capable of creativity so his music can be considered real music. Stuff made by our current AI cannot be considered real because none of it is original, it's just mashed together from other things the AI is trained on

20:41 oh he’s somebody special but I don’t if he’s still around in the present time of the story. That was Dr. BlackJack, a rogue medical doctor who’s brilliant in surgery but is labeled as a criminal for not taking a license and doing experimental surgeries (some of them fairly effed up). But he takes on clients he feels pity for and in turn those healed patients would be paying him off for years thankful of his miracles. The musician’s mother used her husband’s money to fund the hospitals AND the treatment that may have resulted his blindness but ultimately saved her son’s life. Blackjack would prolly be too old in the present day, but it’s a nice lil cameo of Tezuka’s rogue doctor. 😅

The "I, Robot" vibe isn't exactly far off, considering this is a reimagining of a story arc from Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), which was originally published as a manga from 1952-1968, and the robot future they live in is heavily influenced by Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, which were first introduced in 1942. Of course, a lot of older sci-fi manga and anime are heavily influenced by the classics.

None of it is mediocre... The side story with the old man and North number 2 is a masterpiece in terms of writing and character development on it's own.

@@stillkountin The whole series is a masterpiece to be honest. Urasawa just never misses when it comes to great storytelling with compelling character. Really hoping we get a 20th Boys Adaptation in the future.

I was already floored at the quality of the trailers and within the first few mins of the opening I knew this was going to be a masterful adaption, then that damn nightmare scene cemented it to me that this is literally what I invisioned as I read the manga...

Everything is going great until you continue on and question why certain charcaters and moments feel rushed....
Maybe it is because they are skipping entire chapters ,extremely important character building and in GESICHT'S case conflict building moments ...rushing through dialogue and ofcourse cutting a hell of a lot of dialogue
Don't trust me ? Each ep is one volume right? Give each volume a read post watching an ep

Well I watched the first episode and just recently checked the manga to see any differences. Overall the adaptation is veeeery faithful to the manga, I only found one scene that was cut completely from the first episode, it is when the protagonist (whose name I struggle to spell) is talking with a travel agency operator about his plans for going to Japan, I do agree it is an important scene and through the dialogue we get to know the character a little better, it is an important part because it allows us to see him doing something more mundane and to take a look on his thoughts on his marriage. I do agree that it shouldn't have been cut, but other than that everything on the first episode is adapting the source material faithfully, some dialogues are cut but honestly they are not that much important. For example, there's one when Paul thinks north 2 left him, he tries to call him to fix the flowers and the smell around the house out of habit, when he realizes north 2 is not coming he says something like "I cannot do anything by myself" Honestly? I don't see any problem cutting out that dialogue, the visual storytelling did a good enough job showing how useless and alone he feels when he thinks he was abandoned again, the shots of dirty plates and the house looking empty and less in order represented that. Maybe the biggest criticism about the adaptation of the first episode (outside of cutting an entire scene that I believe is important) it's that the pacing is too fast, I do agree that I felt a little overwhelmed by how fast the story was moving, but I think that comes down to taste, I honestly believe the pacing was right before crossing the line of being too fast to be enjoyable, but it never did. Overall I think it's a worthy adaptation, and we can clearly see the passion put into the project.

@@oscarchavezavellan2738 sometime a few words can mean a lot, in 2nd Episode Atom asked Dr Ochamizu if there is any defect that caused Brau-1589 to kill human. Dr Ocha said, "no the AI was perfect", thus Atom said "Perfect ?"
the english sub wrote "a perfect AI that can kill human, what does it mean ? maybe he is the most human of them all"
in manga translation that i read "a perfection that kills people, what does that mean ? isnt it what we call, a "human" ?"
i just found the manga translation is deeper because in Atom's mind the perfect AI is basically just human brain, like what Dr. Tenma said, the perfect brain is capable of making mistakes
also i tried to read to read japanese sub but i cant understand but i think its kinda the same with the manga translation
