At all of these businesses, the animals arrive covered in their own feces after being trucked for hours or days without food or water. They are stressed, starved, dehydrated, suffering. Many animals are treated this way, right on the farm where they're raised, before ever setting foot in a livestock truck. I live in Perry county, PA, and I pass farms where the cows can be seen standing or laying, all day, in big piles of their own manure. One farm, purchased by Mennonite people a few years ago, have their small herd permanently penned up in a small, manure-filled area, in front of their barn. Not allowed to pasture at all due to using the remaining land for other purposes, such as a very large chicken business.
