The husband's interview at the start of this video broke my heart. His nervous jittering and wavering voice shows how hard he was trying to hold it all in and not fall apart. Wherever he is in the world right now, I hope he's okay and surrounded by people who love him.
What's horrible is that during this time, a bunch of the posts on the Facebook groups dedicated to finding the then missing Jill Meagher were from people declaring him, the husband, guilty and responsible for the disappearance. A bunch of wannabe detectives calling him a wife murderer and saying the way he behaved in his press conference showed guilt. Then, when the actual killer was caught and Tom was proven innocent, all of those people suddenly went quiet.
The Australian justice system routinely baffles me and I've been an employee of the Department of Justice for years. I've sat in on parole hearings where a judge has said to the offender "you're a danger to society" but then proceeds to grant his release simply because "we don't have room to keep idiots like you locked up." Time and time again. I've said previously and I'll say it again - judges should be charged as accessories when the person they've released from prison commits another serious offence. Hold them accountable for the consequences of their decisions. You'd be shocked at how many dangerous sex offenders that I've witnessed being granted parole or an early release despite the judge acknowledging the risk to the public.
I completely agree! Our system is a laughing stock and no one (except maybe the public) seems to realise just how dire the situation is 🤯 we need much harsher punishments for all criminals of course but this vulgar specimen should NEVER had been let out! Like you said, part of the responsibility for Jill’s murder lies with the judge who granted him parole!
A thought for the husband who did his best while being accused of being the killer. His words on the incompetence of the justice system were spot on too.
I'm glad that he was cleared early on; it paved the for the damning footage to surface. 'Cause we all know how it goes when investigators put all their eggs in one basket.
Dude shoulda been locked up a lot longer & a lot sooner! The fact that his own MOTHER did all she could to keep him locked up is infuriating that he wasn’t. It’s incredible how so many ppls incompetence can have such life changing effects on others is also very discouraging to mankind.
The St Kilda attacks were on sex workers. There was a lot of talk at the time about how if crimes against sex workers were treated more seriously Bayley wouldn’t have been out and about free to escalate to murder. Jill’s husband himself has said he doubts Bayley’s earlier sentence would have been so lenient if he’d targeted women society regards more valuable and sympathetic, like his wife.
People always complain about the US prison system, and granted, there are ways it needs to improve, but European and especially Commonwealth countries (UK, Canada, Australia) are the other extreme. They give these laughable slap on the wrist sentences even to habitual dangerous offenders.
@@mad8598 100%. I recall the Yorkshire Ripper case, and how the victims were basically shamed as prostitutes even when many of them were not such thing, just ordinary working class women walking home from their jobs etc, and how this attitude was a factor in how slow the Ripper was apprehended. The police got obsessed with what turned out to be a hoax letter (guy was prosecuted for it and imprisoned decades later) whining about hating prostitutes. It made SENSE to them, see. Like, it's 'normal' to hate prostitutes and if you hate them, OBVIOUSLY you will mutilate and kill them, even if you are the same guy who pays them for sex regularly. Except the men who kill them only kill them because they are WOMEN. They are simply the easiest targets as they will get into cars etc with strange men, and are less likely to be taken seriously as victims because of the stigma When you kill a 'beloved mother' (like prossies aren't mothers often) or whatever, they moved hell and earth to find the killer. Not, until very recently, did they do this for sex workers.
@@ironwolf56 when a person or should I say "preditor" like this red-faced hot blooded prick is involved, most definitely our government should have life as actual life without a chance of parol. However in America so many innocent people face life or the death penalty 🙄.
And this case proves that the Australian law is weak and wishy-washy and a joke. When will the Australians make tougher laws against these monsters in your complacent society?
The whole country was holding its breath for this one, I remember it like it was yesterday. Took a little while to click on it honestly I saw her face and just got so sad.
I studied at the ACU in East Melb at the time, and it was so upsetting. She just did what so many of us women did and do, and should be able to EXPECT to do SAFELY. I definitely looked over my shoulder around that area for a very long time. Her family are incredible, and our hearts are still with them ❤
This case was heartbreaking and unfortunately nothing much in our judicial system has changed . My sister was murdered this year by a man that was given bail after committing several violent offences. It’s disgusting and apalling that violent perpetrators are given the revolving door. Jill and my sister should still be with us now .
I feel so bad for Bailey's poor mother. The pain in her voice is absolutely heartbreaking. She tried to stop his freedom and save women. She tried to save Jill against her own son. That takes strength.
Right?! She's his mother and knew what he was capable of. It takes a lot for a mother to tell law enforcement that their son is dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets.
A guy the other day, that I met at a friend's funeral, later that day said to me that, as we all have a 'duty' to protect ourselves, the onus is on the victim.. He was specifically talking about rape. I ran away from him there and then, mainly because I felt in instant danger - it was only the two of left at the end of the afters of the funeral. The term 'duty' didn't make sense to me either. Its one of our most basic fundamental instincts to want to protect ourselves. I wish evolution and natural selection could somehow manage to find a way to rid humans of their evil and destructive qualities but it's a tall order..
@@knowsmebyname Melbourne/many parts of Melbourne were safe to walk home. There were dodgy areas, of course, but for the most part we felt safe. This event (and later Eurydice Dixon and Aya Maasarwe) changed the landscape

Adrian Bayly said to the police that “he was only trying to be a nice guy” when he first approached her. Most self-proclaimed nice guys are not “nice guys”.
Not only could Jill have been saved, but I'm sure many young girls/women would've been spared a lot of pain if he had been sentenced more harshly. It's really tragic and infuriating.
Are you familiar with the case? The St Kilda attacks he served 8 of an 11 year sentence for were on sex workers. A lot of people, including Jill’s husband, have said that if crimes against sex workers were treated more seriously he wouldn’t have been out and free to escalate to murder. But unfortunately society regards women like Jill as more valuable and deserving of protection. ☹️
@@mad8598 he mentioned those and you are absolutely right about crimes against sex workers not being treated appropriately. It's a big problem everywhere. “Walking home as we all do everyday” - not me, after years of That Chapter I’m too terrified to ever leave my house. Also to be in my house. I’m actually watching this from under the bed.
In cases like this, I always think that the people who kept letting this evil POS out should be held responsible because they most definitely do have some responsibility for Jill's murder, maybe then they will stop letting P-words, R-words and killers out on parole.
@Humanimal it does, I actually feel like crying for Jill and her loved ones, but im trying not to as it will spike my anxiety. This could have been prevented. There are so many victims of this monster that didn't have to be. I need to try and take my mind off of this. It's one of those cases that will stick with me forever. Poor Jill.
Jill sounds like an awesome person to me. That, and the fact that she had such a lovely husband who loved her so much, makes this case even more heartbreaking.
This case was sickening. Brunswick was my regular place to go for drinks and live music. Our judges have a lot to answer for, letting women killers out on bail. No one I knew thought it was Tom. My heart goes out to him

Cases like these are wild. Even here in the US with privatized prisons that basically encourage locking people up for nothing, you're always hearing cases of someone serving little to no time over something serious and as a result committing some heinous act. Meanwhile people will serve double digits for nonviolent drug offenses.
One famous case Donald Smith. In and out of prison for sexual assault to minors. Ended up killing a little girl he kidnapped from Walmart. it was so bad that even the autopsy doctor was crying.
Poor Tom 🥺if you look at his interviews before and after the trial his eyes are completely different. That's a man who has felt grief and cried oceans. Poor guy :(
I feel so bad for Tom. You can tell that he's barely keeping it together for the interviews that he's doing, and as a man I can only understand what it could feel like to lose someone that you absolutely love in such a heartbreaking way, and have the justice system also failing you at the same time. I hope he's in the better state of mind right now.
As well as having to deal with masses of idiotic true-crime parasites online accusing him of the same heartbreaking tragedy. Bc men are inherently evil, right? And the closer they are to the victim, the more people are convinced that they're guilty. The whole justice system shenanigans thing is mind boggling. I can understand the 'Take Back the Night' response, but where's the "Take Back the Gavel" marches in Australia? Some serious reform is clearly needed. Honestly criminal charges should be considered when it comes to the parole office- in my eyes they are partly responsible for every S.A. this man did after they dropped the ball, not to mention the murder. Good grief how bleak.
A few months earlier my brother and I had began attending a local gym nearby. That guy made chitchat and was by all accounts very friendly. He said he had noticed us over a few weeks and saw how we were getting stronger. I said thanks. Some people are very good at portraying a friendly happy character and we don’t see the vile heart and mind ; he’s where he belongs. RIP Jill
Well, you're a man. He actually saw you as human, unlike how he saw women. He even used the "Nice Guy" routine to prey on women, by lying about them being followed and offering to protect them.
I can't believe you're covering this story. I live in Melbourne, Aus and grew up going to The Brunswick Green with all of my friends living that way. @@ashleigh4729 yes, sorry about that. I thought he got life plus 40 years but at the end of the video Mike said 35 years. I agree that is not enough justice for Jill.
It’s exhausting and terrifying as a woman. I battle regularly whether or not I am being over dramatic or it’s a legit fear I have when I walk my little dog at night, or to my car, when a man approaches me in public on my hikes, etc… When we met, my fiance admitted he never considered the impact predatory men have on our daily lives. He used to run miles every night through our old town, there's no way I would do that. Just walking our little dog at night so he can potty is questionable anymore. I've been a victim once, I refuse to be one again. No, I don't stop living, but, I really wish our living didn't consist of pepper spray, self defense knowledge & tricks, always being on guard and having to tell men to fu€k all the way off…regularly.
Self defense saved me after two men grabbed me in Las Vegas. I’m tiny, 5’4 and 110 soaking wet so I’m sure they thought it would be easy. This was 24 years ago, and I still shudder at the thought of what could have happened, what my husband would have gone through, not to mention my parents. It might be the most important knowledge a person can have. On a side note, I have 2 black belts, I guarantee they were sorry they tried me. That’s my gift to you girls, a can of whoop-ass. I hope it made them think twice before trying that again. They were never caught.
Just listening to the criminal's mum, poor woman, feels so guilty, tried so hard under the circumstances, to stop this from happening, it's heartbreaking for Jill's family, but, for his mum too 🥺
I know what you're saying! I can't even imagine how I would feel if one of my children grew to be a sexual predator. I would constantly question where I went wrong, how I could've stopped them from becoming like that & I may have even thought to take matters into my own hands. (If I had done the last, I don't think I could've lived with myself after, so ...) In a way then I guess I really do have to admire his mother.
A couple of weeks ago I watched a vlog from a very attractive American girl who was visiting Sydney. In her video she was walking alone through a park late at night and she was commenting on how safe Sydney was. I posted a comment warning her that it was not safe to walk alone at night, especially in a dimly lit area like a park. When I scrolled down the comments I saw a lot of other Australians had posted warnings too. Melbourne is not riddled with crime but, as I cautioned her, it's better not to put yourself in a vulnerable position. Male or female, you never know what could happen, it only takes a group of guys who've been drinking, or someone who sees you as an easy mark and you'll be in trouble.

But if it's just some sex worker or some women here or there our fearless leaders officials honestly most of them anyway don't care they are just going through motions checking boxes here and there. They don't care until it happens to them which is so fucked up because they are intrusted to equally apply the law effectively not just when law breaking effects them. This murder was very preventable and it just shows there's classes and the law ain't applied appropriately and equally

And this whole thing just shows how horrifically sex crimes are treated by our police. They call rape kits "free pap smears" if that gives people any idea of what we're dealing with.
Early release is to make room for idiot drug users. Part of the blame is on society for insisting they are locked up. So actual dangerous people are released early. Fact.

Nobody is ever safe and nobody has some fundamental right to "feel safe". If you want to feel safe learn how to use a gun and carry one at all times. If you live in a place where you can’t, then you’re NEVER safe and you should move to texas. I live in texas and I feel as safe as is reasonably possible. My gun is within reach right now. Hopefully I never have to use it. I certainly don’t want to have to shoot anyone. But not everyone feels that way. But which weapon a bad person uses isn’t what interests me. Gun, baseball bat, knives, chainsaw, poison, it’s not the most important question. When where who and why are the important questions. How is totally irrelevant except possibly for sentencing with deadly weapon enhancements (but in texas it’s legally impossible to kill somebody without using a deadly weapon).

@@shannon222ish "There are MANY instances of ppl being murdered with their own firearm so I think you're better off without it." That's *definitely* statistically untrue. Firearms are known to be successfully used defensively at a higher rate than they are used to commit crimes. To the degree that it's not even close. The exact number varies by study but it's approximately 2 to 1. If what you where saying was true, that would have to be a 25%-75% split, minimum, instead of the 66%-33% split that actually exists. And that's putting aside the fact that the percentage of those crimes that where committed with the victim's own firearm is definitely on the low end. The only thing that you need to keep in mind here is that you may feel that you, personally, have a higher risk factor because owning a firearm would give somebody in your life with the will to use it on you access to it. This is when I was also taught not to fight back, that it lowers my chance, and I need to scream 'fire' and run - if I can... which is insane that I had to even be coached on this. We all started to walk with our keys hanging out of our knuckles whenever we were walking around. She won't be forgotten.
This monster is a serial offender who’s gone through all the rehabilitation possible?? How on earth they let him out?? Just so 💔 this poor young woman lost her life, but it could have been totally avoidable!! What a tragedy
He got out and that was it nobody checked in on him? Predators like this do not change their stripes. There's always some excuse of why they're let go I hate it
Just another Aussie here saying thanks. I often have to unsubscribe to channels for the way they talk about victims especially women - but you matey are solid gold. You genuinely make a difference each day by telling these stories in a respectful and honest way and I appreciate you heaps.
Remember this case. Was really sad that Jill had to end life like that. Was pretty heavy press coverage at the time. You have done her justice, thanks.
Sad, sad story. Being a Melburnian this story shook us all. It should have been avoided. Feel for her husband and family. Love your work Mike keep it up
I live in Melbourne and this story was everywhere at the time. Poor Jill's face was on every news channel and billboards everywhere. At first everyone was whispering about Tom and suspected him. This was a tragedy that could so easily have been avoided if the parole board had done their job correctly. Ask any Melburnian about this case and they will remember it . BTW Mike, the accent was pretty good, I have heard much, much worse lol.
I was living in Melbourne at that time and I still can't get over the handbag being put back into the alleyway by the shopkeeper after finding out who the owner was...like WHY? Id be straight down to the copshop.
I am Aussie and this story really impacted me when it occurred. I was 19, at university, going out to bars and clubs, walking home from the bus stop in the dark after work. I remember crying silent tears one day at work when they discussed the case on the radio. I felt such grief and anger - for Jill, her family, myself and the women in this country. My innocence was lost as I realised it could have been me, or one of my friends. It could be my daughter one day. It sparked an important conversation in Australia about violence against women and the country seemed to feel the grief and outrage collectively. It shouldn’t have happened to her, it shouldn’t happen to any women. We deserve to feel safe and the system fails us miserably time and time again. I often still think of Jill - when I hear a similar story, or when I’m walking alone at night. I hope the public doesn’t forget her. Thank you for sharing her story.
I would bring to your attention. You ladies vote for gun control and confiscation. Then you cry about getting hurt. Maybe just maybe stupid socialist policies cause criminals to hunt you ladies like a sport. Any woman around me, I teach to shoot and encourage to own weapons.
The system has failed us since the beginning of time and it's going to keep failing us no matter what we do. All over the world. Less in Australia (and the USA) if you can believe it. There's really nothing we can do about it but try to raise our sons with an emphasis on nonviolence. We throw the book at them in the USA when it comes to long ass prison sentences and harsh penalties (such as DEATH) and yet we have worse violence against women here than in Australia (at least I THINK we do). We see no results, except the largest prison population in the world. It's really nice to know they're suffering with their victims and their victim's families though...but we will never be able to walk alone in the dark without looking over our shoulder. We aren't ever rehabilitating a dude like this. He'll ALWAYS be a threat until he's taken out back and put down humanely. I walk home in the dark with my right hand in my pocket gripping a 9mm handgun with one in the chamber ready to go ASAP, because my life literally depends on it, and I STILL look over my shoulder. But I do walk a LOT easier. The way I imagine a man walks. But, I gave up long ago on any safety for women walking alone. I live in one of the most dangerous cities in the USA. And the world too, I guess. I should move, but I watch too much true crime and I know there is no place women are safe. I'll always be looking over my shoulder until I get lucky and die of natural causes at 85 or lose the game and die by some mad AH's hand that was, "just trying to get her home safe ya know until she pissed me off when she wouldn't let me rape her". 🙄
her poor husband coming out of the church service all disheveled is heartbreaking. God bless him. I hope his life got better at some point and was able to find some peace and happiness.
The way she stops walking w him right in front of the bridal shop and she keeps looking back like she doesn't really want to walk forward w him is chilling. U can tell she was hesitant to go further....
@@gailmiler2797 Not actually a bad idea. Sound of breaking glass never mind a burglar alarm popping off would be the last thing a scum bag like that would want so yeah, definitely an option. Cuts from the glass, awkward conversation with police and cost of a new window would be a small price to pay. In this case though you can see the uncertainty in her but I don't think she realised just how much trouble she was in until they were out of frame. It is heart breaking to watch

It's so unfortunate that we always focus on the mate (for good reason). It must be so hard for them going thru the disappearance or murder of a loved one while also being put under the microscope for it and being hounded by the media. As if they don't have enough to worry about. 😢The husband just seems so heartbroken. I can't imagine how he feels...
I absolutely wept for Jill, her family and Tom. I’m about an hour drive away from where this happened. It was and still is unbelievable. I swear it is almost impossible to get jail time in Australia. Everyone was in shock when learning about what Jill’s killer had previously gotten away with. Also, in 2018 Eurydice Jane Dixon was found murdered at Princes Park in Melbourne. She was walking home from a bar when she was sexually assault and murdered. The guy handed himself into police after they released the CCTV footage of him. So eerily similar and it brought back so many memories of what happened to Jill. Great video man, I’m very glad this one was covered.
And then Eurydice's memorial was vandalised by a men's rights activist days after her rape and murder. He felt that her MURDER was making men look bad 🙄We have some terrifying people wandering around.

I remember this case really well, my daughter was living in Melbourne at the time. It was big news here in New Zealand. It absolutely broke my heart, she was so beautiful. I do hope her husband is doing well these days. RIP Jill ❤❤
I've said it before; I'll say it again - these guys are rarely rehab-able and the only thing they learn is to not leave witnesses behind. Legislators, LE and courts all over the world need to start taking SA and DV claims much more seriously, and tighten up the laws and sentences. RIP, beautiful Jill... 🌹
On the 18th of December down my road, some poor 22 year old young man was murdered. Walking home late at night. Its stories like this one. And the one that happened in my neighborhood. That has made me pretty determined to never walk by myself at night.
The husband's interview at the start of this video broke my heart. His nervous jittering and wavering voice shows how hard he was trying to hold it all in and not fall apart. Wherever he is in the world right now, I hope he's okay and surrounded by people who love him.
😢
Yeah he seems lovely! It must be horrible. Added to everything else, you're grieving and the police would look at you like a murderer.
💔🙏
Poor guy. He was in a right state, bless him. I hope he's getting on ok, if that's possible!!🙏
The judge should be abandoned in the outback
I completely agree! Our system is a laughing stock and no one (except maybe the public) seems to realise just how dire the situation is 🤯 we need much harsher punishments for all criminals of course but this vulgar specimen should NEVER had been let out! Like you said, part of the responsibility for Jill’s murder lies with the judge who granted him parole!
Watching Samantha Melanie's channel made me realise just how often our justice system gives out light sentences :/
It's a broken system at best!!!🙏😢⚖️🤔
Repeat violent sex offenders are incurable. They should not be in public at all.
It's creepy how the justice system takes sexual assault so lightly. These people deserve much longer sentences.
People get more for drug possession or unpaid taxes than this guy. Unbelievable.

Same story over and over again. I don't understand it frankly.
This is why so many women and men do not report sexual assault

A thought for the husband who did his best while being accused of being the killer. His words on the incompetence of the justice system were spot on too.
The way he conducted himself during and after the investigation was nothing short of heroic. A genuinely decent man.
I'm glad that he was cleared early on; it paved the for the damning footage to surface. 'Cause we all know how it goes when investigators put all their eggs in one basket.
I could tell it wasn’t him right away. He was on the verge of tears from the start and genuinely afraid of what he thought could have happened to her.

Melbourne is not riddled with crime but, as I cautioned her, it's better not to put yourself in a vulnerable position. Male or female, you never know what could happen, it only takes a group of guys who've been drinking, or someone who sees you as an easy mark and you'll be in trouble.
So Sydney or Melbourne?

Probably no different. The judges to the proceuters clearly hate women. I would be less surprised if the judge gave him a pat on the back.
It was the parole board that was at fault by releasing him early.
That said i'm quite sure people can feign remorse & in this instance, in my view the Judge should have made a judgement based on the guys' actions & not his words so that this bloke will never have another opportunity.

Oh he'd had been locked up for life immediately and even possibly had the death penalty brought back. If it effects government officials oh they'll burn you to the ground.
The poor husband’s going to be blaming himself for not going with her that night for the rest of his life… and the friends too, I’m sure, feel immense guilt for not doing more to get her home. And this whole thing just shows how horrifically sex crimes are treated by our police. They call rape kits "free pap smears" if that gives people any idea of what we're dealing with.
That is appalling!
Early release is to make room for idiot drug users. Part of the blame is on society for insisting they are locked up. So actual dangerous people are released early. Fact.

Thanks for bringing the tragic loss of Jill back into the spotlight Mike. I'm a Melbourne girl and live a suburb away from where Jill lived and was taken from so this is a story that's close to my heart. I'd walked home alone along Sydney Rd after a night out many times but never again after this happened to Jill. Had the system done what we trust it to do, Jill would still be alive and thriving, it's just so sad.
Monsters can live amongst us.
He was released early(as are MANY) to make room for non-violent "drug" users. Part of the blame lies on society for insisting drug using idiots are locked up.
Cases like this hurt so much, because it could happen to any of us. It’s not unreasonable to feel scared simply walking home. It angers me to the core that I’ve always felt this, and that it’s always been normal.

This was huge news in Melbourne 10 years ago. It was quite shocking we thought it relatively safe here. There were protests and many public meetings to see how this could be prevented and how women can feel safe everywhere in our state. Unfortunately about 7 years later the same thing happened again with Eurydice Dixon not far from where Jill Meagher was taken. Then shortly after Aiia Maasarwe suffered the same in Bundoora a few miles away. It is sad that after the marches and vigils women are still at risk from these heinous crimes.
Marches and vigils don't really achieve anything though. It certainly doesn't stop killers.
Men are actually at a higher risk of "street/stranger" violence than women.
And there will always be predators out there.
@@kaltkalt2083 an obvious response from an american. No you do not have to have a gun to feel safe, women shouldn't be afraid to go out at night, just beacause men think they own them. if the polive had done their job this would not have happened. and as we clearly see from just what happened a few days in the EUA, guns aren't the answer to every problem, because now we wouldn't have a child that tried do kill his teacher.

@jamaljohnson6411 Right Bruh
That being said, if you happen to be have a boyfriend/girlfriend who is an abusive psychopath, you should probably just split.
