  • Every year on the first Saturday in November, Swedes celebrate Alla helgons dag - All Saints Day. This day is part of a two-day celebration called allahelgonashelgen.
During this weekend, Swedes remember the dead by lighting candles at the cemeteries.
In this video, we discuss typical Swedish traditions during this time of year. The idea of Halloween didn't really exist in Sweden until the 1990s, so it is still fairly new. However, many younger Swedes will celebrate Halloween by having Halloweenfester (Halloween parties) or by dressing up and going door to door asking for candy. Instead of saying "Trick or Treat," you say "bus eller godis!"
We also go through some spooky Swedish vocabulary.

Also, if a person in Sweden DOESNT have a "Jack-O-Lantern"/ Pumpkinhead outside their door or garden gate, THEY DO NOT CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN, take this seriously please, some christians and other cultures, consider Halloween to be "of the devil" and dont like it. Even though Im protestant, I DONT consider it to have ANYTHING to do with the devil AT ALL, costumes or not and I LOVE HALLOWEEN. But thats me. Im glad that we have a holiday where we can talk about things that scare us, death, and other dark things, in a benevolent way, and have fun with it. A "Memento Mori" with a chuckle, if you will. And a bit of a Mischief Night, a healthy outlet. The fact that its connected to Samhain and other such "long ago" holidays is ok by me, its NOT un-christian AT ALL. But again, thats me. Crepepaper cut into skulls and rubber zombie masks isnt gonna make me believe less yknow ?
